Chapter Ten

Grell's Life

(In Grell's P.O.V)

The first thing that stands out to me in my life is my parent's murder. I was fairly young—16 years old. My sister, Annabelle was 15 at the time, just a year younger than me. We had been out getting something, and when we returned, we found our mother dead and our father in the process of being killed. We chased the killer off (I later learned that his name was Zak), but Father was already dead. Enraged, my sister and I spent weeks developing new weapons to avenge our parent's deaths—I built my own specialized weapon that would later become my reaping tool, my chainsaw, and Anna and I tracked him down. Together, we killed both Zak and his mate, Coraline, and ran off before anyone could see us. However, in the process of crossing a nearby street, Anna was hit by a car. According to the hospital reports, she died of internal bleeding before she even got there.

Hurt, I stayed in my dog form for some time and was adopted by a kind man named Samuel. He would tell me every day that I was "a pretty boy," and that my eyes were "beautiful, stunning, and amazing." It was quite true, as well. My eyes were my pride and joy—one gold, one blue. They were my only reminders of my parents—my father's eyes were blue and my mother's were gold.

One thing I hated though was the fact that Samuel had to work. One day, I decided to follow him. As I wandered out across the street, a large car hadn't noticed me. Samuel frantically called out, "Grell, stay!" and he pushed me out of the way, letting the car hit him instead of me. He died.

Blaming me for his dead, Samuel's parents sent me away to a testing laboratory. It was there that I was turned into a Shinigami. The tests were long and horribly painful—I ended up loosing the use of my back legs, and so they were replaced by metal ones that were heavy and awkward. For the final blow, they did tests on my brain to upgrade my tracking, scenting, and cognitive skills—in the process, I became legally blind and my eyes turned a horrible green. I had lost my wonderful gems that were the only reminder of my parents.

The only thing that kept me alive during those days was William. He would come every day, speaking to me through a vent in the room, giving me hope. I was not able to see Will until the day the tests were over. I had to wear glasses, and Will had come to give them to me. They were pretty and red—my favorite color. From that day on, Will and I were best friends.

After I got out, I met a wolf named Ann, who reminded me so much of my mother, but with my sister's solid red fur. She was my idol, and she took me under her wing.

As a Shinigami, I was assigned to reaping the souls of the test animals that died or were killed, a job easily done. As a bear-dog, my regiment was assigned to getting rid of a bear who had been terrorizing the neighboring people.

Tracking the creature was easy—fighting and killing it was different. Before the hunt, my regiment had 2,000 dogs. By the time the bear was killed, we had 500. Will's father, Xavier Thompson Spears, was one of the casualties—unfortunately, Ann was also one of the dead. However, Ann's death would not be my breaking point. I later learned from Will that the scientists were planning on killing us because our duty was over. Enraged, I killed all of the scientists and set all of the test animals free. After that, Will and I joined the Black Lands army during the war against humans. We have been a part of the Black Lands ever since.

That is the end of my story.
