Defeated Hero of Time timeline. The aftermath hurts Link in a whole different way than his own death: The Sages all sacrificed themselves to stop Ganondorf and the Hero of Time is very much convinced it's all his fault for failing his mission to defeat the King of Evil. Courage also means picking yourself up, but it helps to know someone believes in you.

Obviously, Link wasn't going to let a bunch of monsters beat up on an old lady. Apparently, that meant signing up to fight demon princes and a whole lot more monsters. With the worst maps ever and the crappiest sword he's ever seen, he's ready to save Hyrule our of sheer spite for being stuck doing it.
