A/N - I've decided to try my hand at an Elsanna story. I do hope you will all enjoy it. Comments and constructive criticism are always welcome. The songs used in this chapter are Someone You Loved by Lewis Capaldi and A Thousand Mile by Vanessa Carlton.
Anna slammed her bedroom door. She turned on her bluetooth speaker and grabbed her phone from the nightstand, falling backward onto her bed as she scrolled spotify to blast her feelings. Soon, a melancholy tune filled her room and reverberated through the upstairs.
I'm going under and this time I fear there's no one to save me
This all or nothing really got a way of driving me crazy
I need somebody to heal
Somebody to know
Somebody to have
Somebody to hold
It's easy to say
But it's never the same
I guess I kinda liked the way you numbed all the pain
'How can she do this to me,' she thought as her anger bubbled over.
Now the day bleeds
Into nightfall
And you're not here
To get me through it all
I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved
Her anger was quickly turning into a burning rage. How could Elsa do this to her?
I'm going under and this time I fear there's no one to turn to
This all or nothing way of loving got me sleeping without you
Now, I need somebody to know
Somebody to heal
Somebody to have
Just to know how it feels
It's easy to say but it's never the same
I guess I kinda liked the way you helped me escape
They had so many plans. There were so many things they were going to do together! As the pain set in Anna began to belt her feelings out in the rest of the song.
Now the day bleeds
Into nightfall
And you're not here
To get me through it all
I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved
And I tend to close my eyes when it hurts sometimes
I fall into your arms
I'll be safe in your sound 'til I come back around
For now the day bleeds
Into nightfall
And you're not here
To get me through it all
I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved
But now the day bleeds
Into nightfall
And you're not here
To get me through it all
I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved
I let my guard down
And then you pulled the rug
I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved
As the song came to a close Anna lowered the volume, but kept the song on repeat. She rolled to her side, burying her face into her pillow as she finally allowed the pain to penetrate her heart and cried. She cried because she would be going to high school without her sister. She cried because they wouldn't be spending summers or holidays together. She cried because they wouldn't be going to each other's proms. She cried because she couldn't figure out why her sister had begun shutting her out in the last year. She thought they had made progress this summer. Elsa was even allowing Anna to hug her again. So why was Elsa suddenly going to a boarding school in France? Why didn't her sister love or want her anymore?
Anna sat on the plane, hands fidgeting in her lap as it was announced that they were making their final descent. As soon as the plane came to a complete stop Anna jumped to her feet and reached for her carry-on in the overhead compartment. She managed to be toward the front of the crowd trying to leave the plane. The flight had only been a little over two hours long, but her nerves made it impossible to be calm. As she made her way through the narrow tunnel into the airport proper she chuckled as she heard a very familiar melancholy tune begin to play. 'Fitting,' she thought as she shook her head remembering how long she'd listened to that song almost four years ago to the day. To be brutally honest, she'd listened to it daily for the first year after Elsa left as she cried herself to sleep every night. 'No time for that,' she thought as she headed toward the baggage claim.
She hadn't heard from her sister since she watched those platinum blonde locks walk onto an airplane. She hadn't given Anna a hug or even a last passing glance back. She never called home, emailed, or even wrote a letter after that. It was as though she'd fallen off the face of the earth. Anna had finally accepted that she would never hear from or see her sister again in her second year of high school, but when she was applying for universities there was a nagging glimmer of hope she couldn't shake and so she'd applied to universities in France as well as Norway. When she was accepted to Sorbonne University, one of the leading universities in France, her parents couldn't say no.
With a wistful sigh, Anna grabbed her suitcases and began to make her way to the front of the airport. When she'd made her way out into the heat of summer she managed to flag down a taxi and handed the driver her address. She would be sharing an apartment with two other girls. Rapunzel was a first-year not originally from France, like herself, and Esmerelda was a second-year who had been born and raised in Paris. She was excited to meet them, but also incredibly nervous, which is why she had flown out a week earlier than she needed to. She wanted to get adjusted to her new life outside of school before she had to throw it all together.
As they pulled up to the building 15 minutes later Anna felt like she was vibrating. She threw her carry-on over her shoulder and retrieved her bags from the back. Her steps were slower now as she made her way through the front door of the building. The lobby was relatively small but cozy. To the left of the door was a row of locked mailboxes mounted to the wall. To the right, a decent-sized plant sat in front of the front window. There was an elevator just past the plant and a set of stairs just past that. There was a small sofa sitting at the back of the room with a coffee table in front of it. After taking in her surroundings Anna took a steadying breath and headed for the elevator. Normally she'd take the stairs, but her bags were heavy and the fatigue of having to get up before the sun and traveling was starting to settle in.
When the elevator stopped on the third floor she picked her bags back up and started down the hallway. As apartment 306 came into view she started to sweat a bit, and not from the heat. She set the bag in her right hand down and dug her keys out of her pocket, placing the one to her apartment into the lock. When she turned it however it was already unlocked. She placed her keys back into her pocket and opened the door a few centimeters before picking up her bag again and bumping the door fully open with her hip.
Long blonde hair that looked as if it had been kissed by the sun was braided and almost reached the floor. Anna cocked her head to the side and blinked a few times as she took the girl in.
"Hi, I'm Rapunzel. You must be Anna." The girl said as she stepped forward and kissed Anna on either cheek.
"Uh .. yeah. That's a lot of hair. How do you manage it?"
Rapunzel chuckled and shook her head.
"I mean … I'm so sorry. Sometimes I speak before I can stop myself. Your hair is beautiful. I just meant …"
"It's fine, Anna. I manage it by keeping it braided."
"Isn't it heavy?"
"Sometimes. I've thought about cutting it, but haven't managed to get up the nerve to do it yet."
Anna nodded and stared at the floor, unsure of what to say next. She'd already stuck her foot in her mouth once. Before she could form anything though Rapunzel spoke first.
"Here, let me help you with those," she said as she grabbed one of the heavy suitcases from Anna. "I was actually waiting for you to get here so that you could pick your room. The back room that faces west and the front rooms that faces east are available."
The two began to walk down the hall and Anna noted there were six doors. Three on either side.
"If there are three bedrooms why are there six doors," she asked.
"There are actually four bedrooms and two bathrooms."
"Oh, I'm surprised there are only three of us living here then."
"Actually there are four now. Another second-year decided to live here instead of in the dorms again when she learned there was a room available."
Anna nodded her understanding and thought for a moment. "I'm not much of a morning person, so I'll take the back room facing west. If that's okay."
"Coolbeans," Rapunzel said with far too much enthusiasm. "I love waking up to the morning sun, but I wanted to let you pick the room you wanted."
"I appreciate that," Anna said with a brighter smile as she made her way to the farthest back door on the left.
Once her bags were set down in her room Anna turned to Rapunzel again. "Do you need help with your bags?"
"No, I'm good, thanks."
"Alright then. I think I'm going to change and get unpacked then."
Rapunzel gave a nod and a smile before heading back to the front of the apartment.
"Oh hey," Anna said before she could get too far. "Do you mind if I play some music? I tend to play it a little loud."
"No that's fine, I love music."
"Cool. Thanks."
Anna closed the door behind her and dug her bluetooth speaker, its charger, and her phone charger out of her carry-on. Her queen-size bed was against the west wall under a small window, a nightstand on either side of it. Her desk was positioned in the middle of the north wall with two larger windows on either side of it. On either side of her door was a tall bookshelf. 'This place needs some personality' she thought as she took in the expanse of how white everything was. Even the carpeting was white. She shrugged as she plugged in her speaker and turned it on. She pulled up her Upbeat playlist on Spotify and turned it on before plugging in her phone. She then shrugged out of her hoodie and tugged her jeans off. She pulled on a pair of shorts and threw her hair into a messy ponytail. She was thankful she'd worn a green tanktop under her hoodie in case she got too warm.
Anna flopped back onto her bed to rest her eyes and body for a minute before beginning her tedious task. She figured that her other stuff would arrive just as she was finishing with her clothes, toiletries, and othe small items she could fit into her suitcase, so she may as well give herself a small break. As she lay there her thoughts began to wander. What were the chances that she'd run into Elsa? She didn't even know what city her sister had gone to boarding school in, let alone which university, or if she'd even gone to university at all. And even if she had, what are the odds it was in Paris? And even if her sister was in Paris, what were the odds of them finding each other. Paris wasn't a particularly big city per se, but it had a lot of people in it and the odds of finding the one person she longed for were less than slim.
A knock on her door brought Anna back to the world around her. She grabbed her phone to pause her music when she noticed the time. It was now two in the afternoon. When had she fallen asleep and how had she slept for nearly three hours?
"Come in."
The door cracked open just enough for Rapunzel to poke her head in.
"Hey, there are some movers here with your stuff."
"Oh, great. I'll be right out."
Anna stood from the bed and stretched out her limbs, arching her back. She followed Rapunzel into the main room of the house where two men stood behind six large boxes.
"It's uh, the last door on the left," Anna said as she bent to pick up one of the boxes. She struggled and grunted for a few seconds before a giggling Rapunzel came and grabbed the other side of the box to help her. The two girls made it to the bedroom just as the men were headed back to grab another box each. They set the box on the floor and Anna pulled the tape from the top of the first box.
"Do you need some help?"
"Nah, I got it. Thanks, Rapunzel. I think I'll grab a sandwich first though."
Anna stood in the kitchen, sandwich in hand as the two men finished and walked out of the front door. As she stood at the counter and ate she finally took in her surroundings. The main room of the apartment was actually quite spacious. To the right was the kitchen she was standing in. All of the appliances were modern and white. The countertops were a gray marble, and the cabinets were black with stainless steel hardware. The walls were white and bled into the main living area. There was a black leather couch that could easily seat four people facing a large flat-screen TV that was mounted to the wall. As she scanned the rest of the living room she noticed that it was all done in black, gray, and white as well. The kitchen and bathrooms had white tile instead of carpeting in them.
'This entire place could use some personality,' she thought as she finished her sandwich and headed back to her room. With the door closed behind her, she headed toward her bed and unpaused her playlist, setting it on loop, and began to unpack. She was just opening her last suitcase when Rapunzel popped her head inside the door.
"Hey, I got a pizza from down the street. You want some?"
Anna looked at the clock now on her nightstand. She'd been at it for just over four hours.
"Yes, please."
The two girls grabbed a plate and a couple of slices of pizza and headed to the living room. They ate in companionable silence for a few minutes before Rapunzel spoke.
"So where are you from?"
"Norway, you?"
"Germany. Why'd you decide to study in France?"
Anna took a bite of her pizza, chewing it slowly as she chose her words carefully. "I, uh … it's kind of complicated."
"That's okay. Are you going to miss your family?"
Again Anna took a slow bite of pizza trying to decide how much she wanted to divulge. "Well, actually, I've been missing my sister for four years. She came to a boarding school in France when I started my first year in high school and I haven't heard from her since." Anna shoved the last of her pizza into her mouth and stared at the coffee table.
"I'm sorry to hear that. Did you two have a falling out?"
"No. I still don't know why she decided to leave. We made plans with each other for all of high school, well the three years we would have been there together."
Anna stared at the table like it might hold all the answers she sought. She hadn't talked about Elsa in almost three years and it was hitting her harder than she thought it would. Sure she thought about Elsa all the time, but talking about her made it so much … it just made it so real. And it made the pain resurface.
"Excuse me, Rapunzel. I think I'm going to go finish unpacking," Anna said hurriedly as she quickly walked back to her room and closed herself in the safe silence. The room felt far too stuffy so she opened all of her windows and pulled her playlist up. She turned the volume up and hit play, letting the first beats of music wash over her with the cooler evening air. If she was going to feel she was going to feel her way, and so as the lyrics began, she sang along.
Making my way downtown
Walking fast, faces pass and I'm homebound
Staring blankly ahead
Just making my way
Making a way through the crowd
And I need you
And I miss you
And now I wonder
If I could fall into the sky
Do you think time would pass me by?
'Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles
If I could just see you tonight
It's always times like these when I think of you
And wonder if you ever think of me
'Cause everything's so wrong, and I don't belong
Living in your precious memory
'Cause I need you
And I miss you
And now I wonder
If I could fall into the sky
Do you think time would pass me by?
Oh, 'cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles
If I could just see you tonight
And I, I don't wanna let you know
I, I drown in your memory
I, I don't wanna let this go
I, I don't
Making my way downtown
Walking fast, faces pass and I'm homebound
Staring blankly ahead, just making my way
Making a way through the crowd
Rapunzel sat on the couch and sighed as she heard the music begin. She felt bad that she'd upset Anna the first day she met her. She had to admit the girl had a beautiful singing voice though. She looked up as the front door opened and their other two roommates stepped inside.
"Hey, guys."
"Uh, what's with the music and singing?" Esmerelda asked.
"I may have asked about her family and she got upset. She really misses her sister."
The two newcomers looked at each other nodding. Esmerelda sat on the couch with Rapunzel and the other girl made her way down the hall toward the music. She listened carefully as she stepped closer.
And I still need you
And I still miss you
And now I wonder
If I could fall into the sky
Do you think time would pass us by?
'Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles
If I could just see you, oh-oh
If I could fall into the sky
Do you think time would pass me by?
'Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles
If I could just see you
If I could just hold you tonight
As the song ended, the volume lowered and the singing stopped. She gently knocked on the door. She heard some rustling, something hitting the floor, and a small groan. She giggled to herself and was smiling at the door when it opened. Her smile disappeared and all color drained from her face when she came face to face with the first year.
"Anna?"
"Elsa?"
