PROLOGUE PART 1: Welcome to the Academy
The skies are misted with a mixture of gray and indigo as fog clouds up the bustling train station. Although the dark weather, a certain figure amongst the crowd has a most outstanding smile as they stand, toes slightly bouncing on the cemented station grounds. After a few rather tedious minutes, a train the color of ripe red cherries finally arrives; smoke puffing out of the engine, to a result of a few hacks and coughs from some of the bystanders. The train grinds against the track with a screech to stop, and an ear-piercing ring attracts the crowd's attention, signifying the train's arrival. The train cars are quickly filled up with people, the figure having barely any room to sit. As the train starts up again, the figure gives a bright smile, as if they were excited over something. After a few mundane hours, the train stops in front of large golden gates, leading to an unknown destination. With this the figure departs the train, dragging their luggage behind them. Once the train leaves, they reach the gates, which in response, slowly creak open. Behind the gates is an enormous structure towering over the figure...
Suddenly, the image shifts to the same figure from the train station, except they are now sitting in a desk that is surrounded by a small, but elegant classroom. Unfortunately, the smile that appeared on their face previously is replaced by a frown, which may be directed to the other people in the classroom, who look as if they are throwing dirty looks at the figure, or jeering and laughing at them. The figure only sighs, seemingly trying to ignore the commotion, and focusing on a notebook on their desk instead, of which one word stands out – DESPAIR. Otherwise, none other words can be seen, as the taunting continues for what seems like forever...
Again, the image shifts, this time to a beautiful garden – covered with countless blooming flowers, a collection of diverse plants and trees swinging gracefully through the wind. Upon closer inspection, in the center of it all is a large tree filled with purple wisteria flowers calmly swaying back and forth over a marble ledge surrounding the bottom of the tree. The figure is once again in this new destination, walking towards the wisteria tree, trembling slightly under the wind. Abruptly, a large group of people enter the garden, ceasing the peace. The figure runs back in fear as the people corner him. One specific person, in the center takes out an unidentified object, glinting in the sunlight. A sword. The figure starts to panic, trying to escape the garden. But it's useless, as it seems that the people have made a strict border, erasing any chance of escaping. Then, the person with the sword warily steps forward, as the figure stumbles back onto the ledge under the wisteria tree. The sword bearer then sprints forward, only for everything to go black. But one thing is distinctly heard through the cloud of vision "I…will get…revenge…"
That was a weird dream… Tsurugi Matsumoto rubbed his head in confusion as he blinked furiously to gain focus. Once his vision cleared he tried to remember how his dream had went, but unfortunately, he couldn't remember a single thing. And as he thought back, he came to the conclusion that the last thing he remembered doing before this very moment was entering an enormous building. Wait…oh that's right, I was about to begin my first day at the academy! Out of many applicants, Tsurugi was one of the few that were selected to become a junior student at the Academy for Gifted Students, where each student was to study and become the best of their ultimate talent, in order to create a marvelous future for the world. It all came back to him, a relief as he was worried something had gone wrong. But wait – why was he in bed, asleep? He remembered as he was entering the academy, it was at least only around 9:00 AM in the morning. And even if he did go to sleep at that time for whatever reason, he was positive he would remember the events before his slumber.
He knew he wasn't the greatest when it came to memory, but he was sure that he would remember simple things like that. Strange… he thought, while giving out a yawn. It had felt like he had slept for ages, but of course it must've just been his imagination – after all as the Ultimate Screenwriter, it was important to have a vast creativity and imagination, or else he would be a horrible and rather bland writer. Upon further inspection of the room, it was clear he was at the academy to say the least. Above the door, opposite from the king-sized bed he was currently laying on, was the Academy's crest. Specifically in the Academy for Gifted Students, students were assigned to one of three representative houses. They were placed into the following three houses depending on their inner, spiritual and outer personality altogether: Kusanagi, Yato No Kagami or Yasakani No Magatama. These terms represent The Imperial Regalia of Japan, or in other words the Three Sacred Treasures of Japan, corresponding to the sacred sword symbolizing valor, the mirror symbolizing wisdom and the jewel signifying benevolence. Tsurugi himself had been determined to be in the Kusanagi House, but he was unsure of how he represented valor rather than benevolence or wisdom.
Moving on, Tsurugi surveyed the rest of the room which appeared to be a very spacious but formal room; the chair at a desk located to his left had velvet cushioning, while the desk itself had many, drawers, cabinets and such to store items or keepsakes, made with a grand mahogany, as well as accompanied with fancy patterns for the drawer handles and the desk legs. The bedside table on his left had a rather same appeal to the desk, giving the room's atmosphere an elegant and smooth look. Inspecting the table more closely, beside a crystallized lamp was a small handheld device.
Rising up from his bed, Tsurugi held the device up, to see his own reflection staring back at him. I wonder why I am still wearing the clothes I wore yesterday…if I had been asleep, I would have changed into my nightgown… either way, it was Tsurugi all right. His black hair, drooping above his black eyes in a fringe cut, his regular sky-blue pullover sweater and navy sweatpants. It was as if nothing had happened between the time he entered the school to when he had woken up. But that can't be possible…I must've just forgotten how I fell asleep he thought, dismissing the thought. With that, he clicked the power button on which then flashed to the logo of the Academy before transitioning to a blank screen, with the exception of seven options that he was to choose from:
MAPS
PROFILES
RULES
REGULATIONS
RISKS
REWARDS
NOTES
Interested, Tsurugi tapped on the "Profiles" option, opening a new page with a small pixilated picture followed by a number of words. Slightly surprised, Tsurugi realized the pixilated picture was of him and the words were none other than facts on him as well.
TSURUGI MATSUMOTO
HEIGHT: 5'6"
WEIGHT: 120 Ibs.
BLOOD TYPE: A
D.O.B.: November 17th
LIKES: Writing, Watching Movies, Reading
DISLIKES: Mathematics, Dress Clothing, Sports
NOTES: Ultimate SCREENWRITER
"This is…weird," he muttered, concerned over the amount of personal information known. Don't be worried. Surely it's just something that I filled out in the application form. And anyways, it's just a few things about me. It's not that bad. He reassured himself, although something still felt out of place about the whole thing. Although that wasn't all. As he examined the tablet more closely, he spotted seventeen other pixilated pictures under his own. They were sorted into three categories:
KUSANAGI
YATO NO KAGAMI
YASAKANI NO MAGATAMA
Hmmm…these must be the other students he hypothesized, considering that each of the three columns were the representative house names. Wait a second…what's this? Underneath the 3 columns was a nineteenth profile, although it was placed in a fourth and final column:
UNIDENTIFIED
To what this meant he did not know, but he did not distress to much over it; he was sure after he finished looking through his room he would meet the rest of the students.
Once he was done with the "Profiles" option, he returned to the home screen and this time tapped on the "Maps" icon. Unfortunately, a notification popped up, noting that the "Maps" app could not be used at the moment.
"Hmph, that's odd," Tsurugi pondered, but not long after decided to check the other options, to distinguish if they would be any useful. Unfortunately, the same notification previous popped up for each the "Rules", "Regulations", "Risks", "Rewards" and "Notes" icons respectively.
Finishing his inspection of the room, he found a large, but empty bookshelf, and a closet. Upon opening the closet, there were about five exact copies of the clothing he was currently wearing, a uniform for formal occasions and such at the school, some gray swim trunks and his white nightgown.
After closing the closet once again, he took one last glance around the room. Although rather ordinary and elaborate, it still was a rather decent place to stay for his next few years at the academy. And with no other choice then to waste time and do nothing, Tsurugi opened the door, not interpreting that this would be the last time he did so with such pride…
Hi everyone, and welcome to my first fanfiction! Reading a great amount of Danganronpa SYOC's has inspired me to create my own, and so, here it is! As you have probably noticed, I have chosen a very "academia" based setting, which I thought would be fun, although simple. In this chapter, the beginning starts off with a dream – to which then Tsurugi Matsumoto, the Ultimate Screenwriter is met, the MC of this fanfic. When I started to write this, I wasn't too sure what Tsurugi's ultimate should have been to be honest, and at first I was going to do such as the Ultimate Lucky Student or the Ultimate ?. In the end though, I decided the protagonist this time would have a less unexpected ultimate, at least to the character specifically.
Now for the applications, I have a few rules that I would like you to follow.
Please send your applications through PMs, with the subject as [DGBA – Character's Name, Ultimate Talent] I'd appreciate it as it is much easier.
I am allowing each submitter to submit 3 characters as a maximum. (I will touch on this more later) Just remember that not every character you submit is guaranteed to get in, so know that I may only choose one instead of all three of your characters, for example.
This is NOT first come first serve. The due date will be May 22nd 2022, which means any submissions before that date are equally eligible with the earliest submissions.
I would prefer foreign characters ONLY if they have a solid reason that they aren't Japanese.
This story has NO relations to any of the events from Hope's Peak, Jabberwock Island and the Ultimate Academy, so please do not make your characters have anything to do with them.
Now, I'm sure a lot of you are wondering about the so called "Unidentified Student" from the Monopad. I am allowing anyone to submit a character for the "Unidentified Student", which is basically a student that never really qualified for the school, but snuck in, such as the Ultimate Imposter. Their ultimate can be anything – they were just never accepted. So if you do want one of your submissions to be the "Unidentified Student" you have to add a small background story requirement (how they secretly got in, how they got declined etc.) that is reasonable in the section below "Representitive House" titled "UNIDENTIFIED". Lastly, and most importantly, if you want to submit for the "Unidentified Student" you must enter a second student, so I can ensure that I don't only get entries for the "Unidentified Student" and nothing else.
Lastly, some specific canon talents will be able to be used, but most cannot be used in the fanfiction. Talents such as the Ultimate Lucky Student, Ultimate ? (as long as there is an actual talent), or talents that are rather common (such as the Ultimate Novelist or Detective) can be used. Please PM me if you want to know if you can use a more specific talent that you are unsure of, but hopefully this is enough info!
Thanks for reading even if you aren't thinking of submitting! As my first fanfiction, this is quite an excitement, and I can't wait to read all of the different submissions! The application will be posted inside my profile and under this, and if you have any questions, please PM me! On that note, have fun, and see you in a month!
