"You were brilliant, Max," Roxanne said as she and her boyfriend Max Goof were leaving school on one Friday afternoon. "Absolutely brilliant! Like always!"
"Thanks, Roxanne," Max said.
Max was starring in Spoonervile High School's production of Stephen Sondheim's Into The Woods and the role he was playing was the Baker. Last year, he played the title role in Sondhiem's Sweeney Todd, and the year before that he played a sailor extra in South Pacific by Rogers and Hammerstien. And he was glad he had a wonderful girlfriend like Roxanne who always came to see him and support him as well as the other events in such as all the sports challenges and talent shows he took part in and won almost entirely.
Roxanne was a bit sad that she didn't have special talents and she was only popular at school not because of who she was at all but because of how beautiful she was and for being the best friend of the most popular girl Stacey, who was also the school's student body president. That was why she liked Max a lot and why he was a wonderful boyfriend because he liked her nice and warm personality as well as her beautiful looks and he once told her that, with her support and encouragement, she was a better cheerleader than the entire cheerleading squad. She even liked him before he became the most popular guy in school before he did that Powerline dance in from of the entire student body at the end of the ninth grade and then when a week later he danced with the real Powerline in his Los Angeles concert in Summer 1995. She liked him because he was always nice and sweet to her and showed her that she mattered to him more than just her beautiful looks. She never liked the other popular guys, especially Chad, who was the arrogant, boastful, muscular idiot she had ever met in her life. As each day went by, Roxanne was glad that she made the right choice of always turning down Chad and the other popular guys and being in a relationship with Max.
Max and Roxanne would always have great adventures together like going to the most fancy restaurants, the movie theatre, the park, the beach, the zoo and just enjoy each other's company. And they never forgot to give them each other cards or presents for either of them when it came to Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter Day and their birthdays.
"But you staying to watch my rehearsal really helps me," Max said to Roxanne. "I don't know what I'd do without you."
Roxanne kissed him on the cheek. "I don't know what I'd do without you too, Max. My life has become a lot better since the day I met you."
"My life has become better since I met you, too."
Then they bashfully laughed and held hands as they continued to walk away from school.
It wasn't long before Max and Roxanne arrived at her house, but they were very shocked when they got there. They saw some removal men taking stuff out of the house and putting them into a removal van. Then they saw Roxanne's dad Marcus putting up a sign in the lawn that said 'Sold.'
"Daddy!" Roxanne ran to him.
Max waited as he watched her and her dad talk for about two minutes. Then she returned to Max, looking very sad. She nearly burst into tears.
"I'm so sorry to do this to you, Max. Believe me, this is the last thing I ever wanted to do."
"You're moving to a new place?"
She nodded. "Daddy's got a new job, but it's in Salt Lake City, so that means we have to move there and we have to drive there tonight. I'm so sorry, Max, but, believe me, breaking up with a great guy like you is the last thing I ever wanted to do."
Max was upset too and he didn't want to end his perfect relationship with Roxanne either, but he knew this could be the last time he ever saw her in his life, so if they had to end their relationship, he at least didn't want to end it on a bad note. "Well, I'm so sorry that you have to go, but I promise you I'll never forget you and I'll always cherish every moment I spent with you and I wish you nothing but happiness and success in your life."
Roxanne sniffed. "Thank you, Max. I'll never forget you either and I'll always cherish every moment I spent with you and I wish you nothing but happiness and success in your life too."
Then they embraced each other. When they let go, Max had an idea. "Say, do you guys need an extra pair of hands for anything before you go? It's just that I'd like to spend as much time as I can with you, that's all."
Roxanne started to smile again. It was a sad smile, but still a smile since she learnt that she was moving to Salt Lake City. "Well, that would be great, Max. Follow me."
Max followed Roxanne, who took him to her father.
"Daddy, Max is going to help us."
"Why?" Marcus asked. "So, I would have to pay him for his services? No way!"
"It's not that, sir," Max said nervously. "It's just –"
"Just what?" Marcus snapped.
Roxanne stamped her foot. "Listen, Daddy! If I must go with you to start a brand-new life in Salt Lake City, the very least you can do is let me spend the very little time I can have with Max before we go! Are we clear?"
Marcus sighed. "Fine! But if he breaks anything like that time his idiot father destroyed out roof, he will pay for it." He turned to Max. "Got it?"
"Yes, sir," Max said nervously. He never forgot the time when his dad Goofy's car exploded which made him go up in the air and crash land through the roof of Roxanne's house. Though he and Goofy repaired the roof and for free, Marcus still hadn't forgiven them.
"So, where do you want me to start?" Max asked Roxanne.
"Follow me."
Max followed her and he soon got very busy helping the removal men remove stuff out of the house and then when he was finished with the inside, he got busy doing outside jobs like washing the windows, weeding the garden and mowing the grass ready for the new owners who bought the house.
It was about six o'clock in the evening when the whole house was empty and the garden was neat and tidy, all ready for the new owners. The removal van had already left.
"Thank you so much for your help, Max," Roxanne said.
"No problem," Max said.
Roxanne turned to her dad. "Do you have anything to say, Daddy?"
All he gave Max was a grunt as he headed to his green car.
"I'll take that as a compliment," Max said. Then he looked at Roxanne again, who finally started to cry. He put his hand in her shoulder.
"I'm scared, Max," she said, as she felt his hand. "I'm scared of moving to a new place, I'm scared of starting a new school during the middle of the Eleventh Grade, I'm scared I won't make new friends and, more importantly, I'm scared because I won't have you."
"I know how you feel, Roxanne," Max said, as he hugged her. "When I first moved here to Spoonerville with my dad, I was very worried because I was moving to a new place and meeting new people, but I'm glad I did because if I didn't, I wouldn't have met you at all. So, I'm sure that once you settle in Salt Lake City, you'll be more used to it and you'll make friends and if I'm not too busy, I could come and visit you, once I know your address."
Roxanne turned to face Max. "I'd like that a lot. If not, we could be pen pals and keep in contact that way."
"I'd like that a lot."
Then there was a car horn. It was coming from Marcus's car.
Roxanne held Max's hands. "Max, before I go, I have to tell you something. You really were the best boyfriend in the world and I'll always be very happy that I knew you and spent time with you when I did. Being your girlfriend has made me the happiest I've ever been in my whole life. Even if I don't see you ever again – but I hope I do – I want you to know that I will never ever forget you and the adventures I've had with you and I will always think of you and hope you have the best life you can possibly have."
Tears started to come out of Max's eyes. "Thanks for saying that, Roxanne. And thank you so much being my girlfriend when you did. All the times being with you have been the very happiest ones of my whole life. I promise I won't forget you either and I will always think of you and I wish you nothing but the best life you can possibly have."
Those words filled Roxanne's eyes with happy tears. They went in for a hug and kissed each other on the lips.
Then they heard the car horn from Marcus's car again.
Roxanne sighed as she wiped the tears of my life. "Well, it's time. Goodbye, Max."
"Goodbye, Roxanne. And good luck."
"And good luck to you too, Max."
All Max could do now was watch Roxanne get into her dad's car and wave to her as much as she waved back to him as she and Marcus drove off. He didn't stop waving to her until the car was out of sight. Then he sadly went home.
