Hello and welcome to this new story!
Happy Easter afterwards! I had an idea to another Jonathan centric story. And this is the result of it. My favorite OC Timmy Tanner makes his return. And other characters at well.
Enjoy!
It was a scary silence in the house. More silent than ever.
Clark could not even hear the always present sounds of the wind rustling through the crops outside. A sound he loves ever since he was a child and that always remembered him the good peaceful times…
But these were not the good old peaceful times. Every time they thought that one crisis was over, they slipped right into the next one…
With Lois' cancer treatment over for now and her on the way to recovery, Bruno Mannheim being behind bars and the Suicide Slums in Metropolis being freed from Intergang… things should had been better for now. For everyone in the family!
But ever since Jonathan stormed out of the house in anger, it was evident that this was just one more point on Clark's list of misinterpretations.
Clark was sure, that Jonathan will calm down. He always calms down. But this time was different. Not only because this year was even worse than the previous one, but also because some things got revealed that made everything even more complicated. Clark was well aware now that he made some serious mistakes. And not only him! Lois, Sam and Jordan were not very helpful eighter…
The escalation today, was just the logical consequence of the past years. And they all said some things today, they all regret. Even Jonathan! But the boy was right anyway. With everything he yelled in fury when Clark made this stupid mistake again. No surprise that just five minutes later, Jonathan left the house with a backpack and said that he stays with his friend Timmy Tanner in his house in a suburb of Metropolis tonight.
Clark tried to apologize, but Jonathan just yelled on him angrily again before he stormed away with tears in his eyes and left his whole family behind in a cloud of dust when he raced away in his truck.
That was eight hours ago… it was already night now…
Jordan was in his room brooding, ever since Jonathan left. Lois went to bed early. Her treatment was over, but she still had to rest more than before her diagnosis and was laying in bed, trying to sleep. But she was brooding too much to sleep. And Clark laid on the couch, where he was forced to sleep tonight and was brooding, too.
It was true: He made a mistake! And not only one. And ever since Jonathan left, they were just mean to each other. As if with Jonathan, the good mood in the house left, too. Jonathan, who always acted as some kind of mediator between the parties and always knew how to let Jordan feel better, left a big void behind.
Jordan was not talking with them anymore. And it was evident that he was thinking a lot about what recently happened, too. When Clark checked on him he saw him wearing the noise cancelling headphones he wore when his super hearing was out of control. Maybe to ignore the world. Jordan shut him out of his room as soon as he noticed his father. When he checked on Lois, he saw her glaring on the screen of her laptop to check on Google Maps where Jonathan 'might' be now. When she mentioned Clark, she shut down her laptop and banished him to the couch tonight.
In almost 20 years of marriage, none of them was ever so mad on each other, that the other one was forced to spend the night on the couch. But Clark kind of felt like he deserved it. Realizing how uncomfortable their couch actually was, he knew that he had to make amends with everyone quickly. But he wouldn't find any rest tonight anyway. A lot of things went through his head.
According to Lois' Google-Maps search, Jonathan would need two and a half hours to Metropolis. If he takes the Freeway and uses the Expressway from the airport to the city center.
According to what Jordan got told by Jonathan (Clark didn't want to eavesdrop but he couldn't withstand), he was meeting with Timmy at Metropolis International Airport. Timmy's mother works there. Then they would drive together with Jonathan's truck to Timmy's house in a suburb of Metropolis.
Clark remembered Timmy Tanner, as an open-minded, friendly, and open boy. He lived in Germany for a few years before returning with his family to Metropolis last year. One of the few friends from the boy's childhood that Jonathan always called a 'true friend'. And that was what Jonathan needed more than ever. Not his superpowered brother who (according to Jonathan's tantrum) does not understand what it means to have no future.
Jordan was already known as Superboy. The DOD accepted him as Superman's son and he had some real impressive public saves over the past months. All while Jonathan went through more and more trouble…
Clark couldn't find any rest. Jonathan didn't respond to any messages or calls. And so far he didn't even text that he arrived well. Normally, no matter how mad he was on someone, he always texted that he arrived well and that he was fine. This time he didn't text. He didn't call! Absolute radio-silence! Jonathan was really mad on them…
Clark looked back and forth between the ceiling, his phone on the coffee-table, the landline-phone on the side-table next to the bookshelf and his mother's old clock on the chimney.
It was far after midnight now. Jonathan was probably already in bed. Clark wondered how Jonathan will sleep tonight. Probably better than anyone else in this house tonight, he guessed. Till today, Jonathan saw Metropolis as his home, rather than Smallville. But Clark understood him: He was born there. Grew up there! There was the live he used to love, until they moved to Smallville.
Clark asked himself ever and ever again if he should had talked to Jonathan after their move and ask him what he thinks about it.
Clark got headache from all the brooding. Still not able to find any rest he thought about going for a walk around the farm. It was a nice and cozy night. Not too cold, cloudless and it was full moon. But Clark was not in mood for it. He just lifts from the couch to walk up and down in the living-room again to think about everything.
He took his phone from the coffee-table and checked for any messages again. Over the past hours he sent a couple of messages to Jonathan over WhatsApp. Jon read the first three but didn't answer them. The last five messages were all marked as 'unread'.
Clark knew that Jonathan was old enough to go out on his own and didn't need his hand to be hold all the time. Even if the boy felt so over the past time again. And Clark didn't dare to use his hearing to spy out Jonathan and invade his privacy. Not again! He was probably glad to meet Timmy again after all these years and they both made themselves a nice evening in Metropolis. And Jonathan was so in need for a distraction that he just forgot to call or didn't check his phone.
Clark dumped himself back on the couch and thought about laying down again, when suddenly the landline-phone rang.
The old phone of the farmhouse was even there when Clark crashed into the fields with his pods. His parents never dared to replace it with a newer model or one of these modern ones. The only addition, his mother made in the past years was an answering machine.
Clark looked on the clock, while he listened to the shrill sound of the ringing. It was loud enough to even wake up people that were sleeping in the barn. He wondered who would call at 0:13 AM. Jonathan maybe? No! He would not call over the landline! Jonathan called them useless.
Clark rushed to the phone to pick up the horn from the receiver before the shrill ringing wakes up the rest of the house. If they sleep at all.
"Hello!"
"Mr. Kent?" a young male voice said.
"Speaking!"
"This is Timmy Tanner!" the boy on the other end of the line said. "Please excuse the late call!"
"Oh, no… it's fine. I wasn't sleeping! I am glad that you call! Jonathan does not respond to my messages! Is he okay! I know he is mad on me and does not want to talk to me! But would you tell him something from us?"
"Mr. Kent… Jonathan is not here!"
Suddenly Clark felt a cold shiver running down his back. Something was not right! Did Jonathan lie to them?
"What? Jonathan said he stays with you tonight! He left eight hours ago!"
"I know! And right after his first call, I talked with my parents to prepare the guestroom. Then I went to the airport to meet with Jonathan there. My mom works there, I know that place well. Twenty minutes later, I talked with Jordan to ask him what happened, and he just cried. Then I talked with Jonathan again and he said that he will arrive in two hours! That was seven to eight hours ago! And he still hasn't arrived."
"Why?" Clark wondered what happened. Suddenly a lot of horrific things went through his head. Did Jonathan have an accident? "Timmy, are you sure? Are you in touch with him?"
"Mr. Kent, I tried to call him! I texted him! I even asked my mom's colleague to make an announcement in the terminal. I searched all the parking-lots for his truck. But I can't find him? Did he come back?"
"No! I haven't seen him since he left!" Clark responds. Full of worry, Clark looked outside into the darkness… For some reason he hoped to see Jon just sitting on the porch sulkily. "Timmy, Jonathan is really mad on me! And I would totally understand if he is ghosting us! But do you really tell me now that Jonathan has not arrived?"
"Mr. Kent… Jonathan was pretty worried about something! He was very… I don't know… the last time I was talking to him he sounded so… devastated… I asked him what happened! He told me we will talk as soon as he arrives because he didn't want to discuss that on the phone. Mr. Kent, I might sound paranoid… But I… I went to the police to report him as missed!"
Out of instinct, Clark reached out his hearing to check for Jonathan.
"Timmy, where are you now?"
"Still at the airport!"
"Did Jonathan tell you where he is when you talked with him for the last time?"
"Not exactly! Just that he needs two hours! Mr. Kent, Jonathan told me to not to call you at any cost. But I have a terrible feeling about this!"
Clark looked outside again. Suddenly more horrific things ran through his head. Clark reached out his hearing again. To see if he can hear Jonathan's voice somewhere. Or his heartbeat, or his breath. Anything that proves that he was fine.
"Timmy… If Jonathan calls you, please tell him to call me back and please call me back, too. No matter which time! What is your number?"
Timmy told Clark his own number and Clark noted it with superspeed on a notepad next to the phone.
"Call me back!" Clark said before he hanged of and speed out of the house.
Was Jonathan so mad on them, that he does this on purpose? Or is he so full of sorrow that he didn't drive to Metropolis and just hides from them? Is Jonathan running away and Timmy is helping him?
NO! No matter how mad Jonathan is on them, he would never scare them so much! It could also not be a prank! Or Jonathan is really so mad on them this time that he stopped somewhere to think about everything quietly and just forgot to call them?
Full of worry, Clark flew over the landscape. Across the route, Jonathan probably took. This was the direct way to the Freeway that led directly to Metropolis. They always took that route regularly when they went to Metropolis…
Did Jonathan have an accident? Was he so extremely mad on them that he lost control over his truck and crashed?
Clark forgot everything else. He forgot that he was actually a bit mad on Jonathan, too for what he said to his mother and his brother, today. He forgot that he was devastated by his son's words and for all the awful things they accused each other for. He only wanted to check his son! To see that he is okay. Jon had an ELT! He would call him if he were in trouble! But what if not?
He flew deep over the road and obviously cached the attention of other car drivers. Some people honked and he could hear excited people yelling 'Superman' when he flew over them. But Clark didn't care. He also didn't care that he was still dressed as Clark. It was too dark to see anything, so nobody would recognize him. But Clark could see everything… A black truck in the darkness was something, most humans would never mention. But Clark found it…
Jonathan's truck, the boy got from Tal, was parking in a small forest. Clark landed right next to the truck to look inside.
Jonathan always took care that it was always clean and neat inside. Even before he got his license, Jonathan spent a lot of time with cleaning it inside. That's why it was no surprise that Clark couldn't even find a crumb inside. Just that the door was not closed properly.
Clark opened the door. The seatbelt of the driver's seat was jammed in the door, that's why it didn't close properly. The car itself was unlocked and the keys were in the ignition lock.
"What the…" Clark was shocked.
Jonathan loves this truck. He would never leave it behind unlocked and with the keys in the middle of nowhere, with the car-alarm being off, where everyone can take it. Ever since Candice's father stole it, he was even more careful. And why in the world he would stop here?
"JONATHAN!" Clark yelled loudly into the darkness.
All around him was darkness! He was just 15 miles away from the farm! Surrounded by forests…
Clark looked on the truck again to see if he found a clue why Jonathan would leave it behind here. But there was nothing. Then he checked the road. No traces. The only skid marks he saw where from Jonathan's truck… Whatever happened, it forced Jonathan to break hardly and leave the truck so fast that he didn't even take the keys with him or kept sure that the door was shut properly…
"JONATHAN!" Clark yelled again and start to float over the forest to use his vision to see if he can find him.
Clark looked around again and suddenly realized that Jonathan was gone…
I hope you like it!
