A/N: Hey loves, I have not forgotten about the other stories but I decided to finally post this one! This is my take on what happened if Team 7 took Obito's word to heart! I hope you all enjoy this story as I have!
ALL GOOD THINGS
The best thing out of this entire mission for Obito had not been when he had awakened his sharingan, but when he and Kakashi had become friends. Obito Uchiha began thinking of the life Team 7 could have had. They would have been the strongest team out there, rivaling the Legendary Sannin. He and Kakashi would be best friends and Obito would sneak him drinks at the club because Kakashi would be too young to drink. Eventually, he and Rin would date and marry and have a whole litter of kids and Kakashi would be the fun uncle after he stopped being so strict. And somewhere in the middle of all that, Obito would become the next Hokage. He could see it so clearly. For the clan to stop keeping him at a distance, for the villagers to see the strong shinobi he had become and not a crybaby. For everyone to accept him. It was the perfect dream.
And as he lay there on the cold ground the only regret he could think of was not telling Rin how he felt. He was scared, scared that he'd lose the only good thing in his life if he told her. He also refused to believe Rin had a crush on Kakashi no matter how much Genma said so. But there was nothing to be afraid of. He just wished he came to this conclusion earlier.
He smiled thinking of it.
He tried to let the thoughts lure him to sleep, but the crackling sound of lighting kept him awake. And the chakra pouring in his system kept him from drifting into the land of the dead.
It was partially his fault they refused to leave.
"K-Kak...ashi please s-stop." It hurt to speak and he desperately needed water.
"You said it yourself!" Kakashi panted and Obito briefly wondered if he should be happy or mad that Kakashi finally listened to him. "Those who abandon their comrades are worse than scum!" The sound of lighting cracked through the air as it stuck rock again.
He had to try again, contrary to popular belief Obito wasn't dumb. Slow yes, emotional yes but dumb? He graduated from the academy at 9, became a Chunin at 11 and he had been preparing to take the Jounin exams within the year. And he wouldn't deny that he had been on that path to get Kakashi to notice him. But Kakashi couldn't notice him, couldn't keep his memory alive if he was dead. They can't waste their chakra on saving him, not when there is an unaccounted number of enemy ninja outside waiting for them. He had to try again.
"Rin, it's…. It's going to be ok," he felt heavy like it was taking all of his energy just to talk. "You have to ge-get Kaka...shi out of… here. I'm not… I- I can't... help" And as much as it would have been comforting to him, he didn't want them to stay, he didn't want them to see him die. It wouldn't be fair. He couldn't forgive himself if Kakashi and Rin died.
ALL GOOD THINGS
Minato didn't like this one bit. It shouldn't be taking his team this long to complete their part of the mission. Something was wrong and he knew Kakashi could handle himself on a mission but this wasn't just another mission. This was war.
He took a second to glance around his surroundings and everything was destroyed from war. This needed to end. Quickly.
He grabbed his special kunai and in a flash, he was gone.
He found Shikaku amongst the chaos.
"I have to go check on my team." He didn't want to leave them in the middle of a battle, but he just lowered the number of enemy ninja to less than half. They could handle the rest.
"Go to them, we have it here. Thanks, and be safe Minato."
He trusted Shikaku could take over for him, as he disappeared into the trees.
ALL GOOD THINGS
This was supposed to be a routine mission. Scout the bridge then destroy it. But of course, something had to go wrong, Iwa was on to them and took her hostage and baited her team to die.
Obito had been a hero, hell even Kakashi's being a hero. So even if the sensible thing to do in this position is to leave Obito and finish the mission, the mission that could potentially sway the war to land in Konoha's favor, Rin couldn't leave.
Hell, she couldn't even think of the war as she continued to pump her chakra into Obitos' system. His right side was completely crushed, and if he got out of this alive, likely, he'd never walk again, never be a shinobi again. But she would be damned if she didn't try if she didn't give it her all.
"You have to ge-get Kaka...shi out of… here. I'm not… I- I can't... help"
Rin quickly shook her head as she glanced at Kakashi. Obito's sharingan spun wilding in its place as he made another raikiri and struck the boulder. As long as Kakashi wouldn't give up neither would she!
Obito's condition was becoming worse. His heart was slowly failing, and no matter how much chakra she poured into his system, it was clear that he needed a blood transfusion and she couldn't do that because the blood pills she had were in her bag, the Iwa Ninja took from her!
Obito was dying and Kakashi was barely holding on. She could tell he was chakra-deprived as he swayed to the left. She wanted to reach out and steady him but he was making the signs for yet another raikiri. Rin cursed.
His chakra was low, he pushed himself past his limits, he told her before his chakra reserves only allowed him to do two, but he was pushing past that. This was his fifth raikiri in under an hour. And every raikiri was weaker than before. But he had to keep going. The boulder was almost gone from Obito's body. And then they could get Obito back to Konoha.
She heard a cracking sound and it was Kakashi's scream that let her know it wasn't his raikiri. She bit back bile as she saw his crushed hand. And all she could think about is how Obito would suffer the same fate times 10.
He had no more chakra, Obito was dying, Rin was about to collapse from chakra use, and there was still an unknown amount of shinobi outside the cave waiting on them. Rin bit back tears and whispered "It's almost gone" over and over.
She watched Kakashi as he pulled a kunai into his right hand and with all his strength struck the boulder. Ignoring the blood on his hand he did it again.
"Ba...Kashi… you crazy... crazy man…" Obito trailed off and it was a startled cry that made Rin realize Obito was barely breathing.
Obito wasn't moving. His hand was still and Kakashi wasn't sure if he was breathing.
"NO, no no no no, I'm almost done, just hold on a little more!" Kakashi went back to stabbing the boulder.
This wasn't working. They needed to free him now, and with that thinking, Rin squeezed Obito's hand one more time before grabbing her kunai and attacking the boulder with Kakashi.
ALL GOOD THINGS
Something was truly off. His bones ache and it wasn't from the battle he just fought. He needed to move faster, he was wasting time. And then he sensed it. Or rather he sensed 7 shinobi.
They were surrounding a boulder of rocks, and he focused on that. Three small chakra signatures were coming from it and he knew instantly whose they were. He paused, only for a second there was another chakra signature. It was further and it didn't match the seven that were surrounding the cave but he couldn't focus on that. Not when his team needed him, so without wasting a second he attacked.
They hadn't seen him coming. And if they knew that the three of them belonged to Konoha's Yellow Flash they never would have attacked his team. Never would have kidnapped the girl, but it was too late, they made their bed now they had to lay in it.
Screams filled the air as Mintao dropped the numbers of enemies faster than one could blink.
His students were in trouble, regardless if Kakashi was a Jounin he was still his student. And they needed him.
His students were stuck in the cave, he wasn't sure how but there was no way they'd sit back and allow themselves to be surrounded. So they were injured, immobile. He prayed he got there in time.
And when he finally came into the boulder of rocks the sight that greeted him wasn't pleasant.
So much blood. It was painted on the ground, Minato wasn't sure where it started or stopped… and Obito… He shook his head as he looked at Kakashi's unmoving body next to Obito's lifeless body. Rin was there but barely. He could see that she was forcing herself not to succumb to sleep, as she pushed what little chakra she had left into both boys.
"Rin?"
Her head shot up and tears were on the verge of her eyes but she refused to let them fall.
"Kakashi's chakra is depleted!" she whipped her eyes with her shoulder before counting, "Obito has a pulse it's weak but it's there! He needs medical attention NOW!" He half focused on Rin and let his eyes search the cave. The signature was back. Stronger. But he couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from. Behind him, above him, below. He jumped next to Rin a second too late and she lay motionless on the ground.
He turned and slammed the thing into the cave wall, kunai at its neck.
"Who are you?" the thing (to his credit) laughed.
"Minato Namikaze… the rumors about you are true. Too bad it'll never be enough." The thing slowly started to disappear into the cave behind him, and no matter how hard he pulled the thing- no the man didn't budge.
Minato's hand collided with the wall, and he flipped around to see the man dragging Obito through the ground. He felt sick. Obito was- Obito looked dead and this man was dragging him around like a rag doll.
He was standing over Obito, Rasengan colliding beneath their feet, making the man release him as he quickly swung Kakashi and Rin over his shoulder while snatching Obito from the man and retreating.
He could take him. The man wasn't strong and relied on his jutsu- maybe kekkei genkai, but regardless Minato wasn't about to risk his student's safety to fight this man. They were his number one priority. And the fact that the man chased him over 20 kilometers let him know how serious the matter was. If he hadn't been carrying all three of his students, the chase never would have lasted longer than 5 minutes.
Minato was beyond pissed. After a few hours, the man stopped following them, but he was positive the man was still lurking in the shadows.
Even with the hiraishin it took them two days of nonstop running to return to Konoha. Minato was tired, and his heart ached. The situation wasn't idealistic. He had stopped- once he was sure he was no longer being followed- and wrapped the most damaging parts of Obito. Which happened to be the majority of his body.
He thanked Kami that Rin had insisted on teaching them the basics of medical ninjutsu. He wasn't sure if it worked but as he looked over his shoulder, there were nurses and doctors on all sides of him, helping him to lower his students on gurneys.
"Minato-san, can you tell us what happened?"
"I don't know," he spoke in a broken voice. He had no idea what transpired in that cave. All he knew was that Rin kept both Obito and Kakashi alive and that Obito was dead- he looked dead. Minato had killed a lot of people (especially during wars) but he never saw so much blood in a child. So much blood the boy was almost drowning in it. If Obito was alive, he shouldn't be. He wasn't a doctor, but all that blood loss couldn't be good. And when he picked the boy up, he was so light. Like he was missing half his weight, the thought had Minato dry heaving in the trash bin next to the nurse's desk.
Obito has been in surgery for over 6 hours, yet he refuses to let any negative thoughts consume his mind.
"Why haven't we been informed on what's going on?" Kushina asked the nurse yet again. Said nurse stammered out an apology before quickly making his way to gather the information. That was the fourth person they'd ask and none of them had answers.
Minato paced around the room. They had brought Kakashi back from surgery a few hours ago. The few Iryō-nin in Konoha General had all rushed to Obito's surgery, leaving the others to fix Kakashi's hand. His bones were crushed. And while Kakashi's hand was damaged, there weren't enough medics to go around. Luckily, for Kakashi, he had a teammate who would heal his hand the moment she was able to.
Since Kakashi and Rins conditions weren't to serve, he could get them into the same room. Kushina was sitting in a chair next to Rin's bedside trying to calm Minato. Nothing would work. Six hours had passed and they should have been informed by now! This was ridiculous.
ALL GOOD THINGS
Hiruzen Sarutobi knocked on the door before entering Team Minato's unofficial hospital room.
"Minato-kun I heard what happened, how is Obito?"
He frowned at the sight he came into. Minato looked like shit. He heard the boy traveled two days with no sleep until he arrived at the hospital but he figured he'd go home and rest or get admitted to the hospital for chakra loss. But he shouldn't have been surprised.
"The doctors haven't told us anything. But his right side was completely crushed."
Which meant there was nothing they could probably do to help the boy. Even if he lived he'll never be the same, never walk again. Hiruzen sighed, Obito was such a bright child. It's sad to see this outcome for the boy, it wasn't supposed to end like this.
Minato turned to the Third Hokage, determination built in his eyes as he bowed before him.
"Hokage-sama, please grant me permission to bring Senju Tsunade back to the Leaf!" Well, he certainly hadn't been expecting that today. Again he should not have been surprised, Minato tended to go above and beyond for his students.
"Tsunade left the village over 5 years ago. She hasn't been seen or heard from since." He needed Obito to live but the odds of Tsunade coming back to help a kid she doesn't know is unlikely.
But Tsunade was Minato's only option. Rin and Kakashi almost gave their life to keep Obito alive, they gave him a chance and now it was Minato's turn. If one thing was sure, Minato would move heaven and hell to make sure Obito woke up. Everyone called him the Yellow Flash but when it counted Minato was never fast enough. His parents, his genin team, and now Obi-
No.
No, Minato would make sure Obito lived. This would only work if he lived.
"I understand all of that Hokage-sama, but she is my only option, if anyone can track her it's me."
"And me 'ttebane!" Hiruzen let out a chuckle at the two of them.
"Alright, you may leave but do remember there's still a war going on."
ALL GOOD THINGS
With the help of his toads, it only took the two of them 2 days to reach Tsunade. They would have found her a day ago but she had picked up on their scent and took off running through the Land of Fire.
"What the hell are you two doing here?" was the first thing she said to them as they entered the bar.
"Tsunade-hime, your presence is requested inside the Leaf urgently."
Tsunade glared at Minato. How dare this kid walk in here like he owned the place, and how dare the people in the room straighten their backs when he came into the bar. Tsuk bastards, he's just the Yellow fucking Flash there is a lot of shinobi who are known throughout all five nations, like… shit it didn't even matter.
"It didn't matter to me then nor does it matter to me now. You'll have more luck finding your sensei."
"Hime, stop acting like that! You're coming back with us one way or another!" She didn't even have a chance to lunge at Tsunade, Minato was already grabbing her waist holding her still.
"We didn't come to fight, my student is in a bad condition. Will you help us?" He would have loved a reunion but he didn't have time. Obito didn't have time. And as much as Minato was trying to remain calm his eyebrow twitched. Tsunade had forced them to chase her for over a day while his student was dying and desperately needed her help.
Tsunade sighed and ordered another bottle of sake, pouring three glasses for them. Kushina took a seat next to Tsunade in the booth and ordered Minato to sit down. He wanted to groan but he complied nonetheless.
"Konoha has good medics, good doctors, if they can't do anything for your kid then neither can I." she brought the glass to her lips taking it down like a pro.
"Tsunade Senju, Legendary Sannin, granddaughter to the First Hokage, your reputation surpasses you, Hime. All I'm asking is for you to come with us and see if there's something you can do." Minato wasn't a beggar but damn if he didn't give out a good puppy look.
"I'll tell you what… if you could beat me in a game then I'll go back with you."
"I'll win in five minutes hag!" Kushina exclaimed, pouring herself another shot, "Let's go 'ttebane!"
"Not you brat," No matter how many times she played against Kushina, the redhead always won. Even when Tsunade rigged the deck Kushina always found a way to win. Tsunade guessed that Kushina had to be cheating, sure Tsunade was bad at gambling but there was no way Kushina was a natural. "You," she said as she pointed to Minato. And this wouldn't just be a game of cards no. If Minato could out drink her then and only then would she go back to the Leaf.
"As much as I appreciate the offer, Hime, I don't have time for games. I need your help now. My students' life isn't to gamble on."
Kushina smirked. There was no way anyone could say no to Minato especially when he talked like that. Like a commander.
Seconds passed before Tsunade sighed, trusting this brat to remind her so much of what was. She slowly slipped on her drink, casting her glance between Kushina and Minato. Minato… he probably didn't realize how much authority he carried. She smirked. This fucking brat chasing her throughout the Land Of Fire and not asking her to come back but ordering her.
"Fine but you're carrying my bag."
ALL GOOD THINGS
Kushina was worried.
If she did the calculations right, Minato was pushing onto day 6 with no sleep.
Minato paced around the hall yet again. When they arrived yesterday Obito had been placed on life support and they were waiting for him to pull the plug. Life support.
They said he was not brain dead but it'd only be a matter of time. Tsunade and Shizune have been in there ever since trying to bring life back to the boy.
It hurt. And she only knew Obito through Minato. She couldn't imagine how Minato was feeling. And then to find out someone had tried to kidnap Obito. She felt sick.
She knew Minato was in a trance, it happened to her when her village was destroyed. She remembered crying over her mother's dead body and then she was in Konoha. She remembered the Third stepping forward to speak then she was in the orphanage. And it kept going on and on until later. It took her a long while to get out of the trance, and she didn't want to see that for him.
But here they were.
"Sensei?" Rin had been calling out to Minato for a while now. And she honestly didn't know what to say. It hurt, seeing Minato play the role of a worried father to a dying child.
It took three days for his students to wake and when they returned they were by Obito's side and Minato had to force them to leave and get sleep. Yet he refused. And no matter what Kushina said to him, he stayed. She nudged Minato and he quickly glanced over to Rin.
"Rin, how are you feeling?"
Rin frowned at him, she was fine and he knew it, she was worried about Obito. While they were gone, she and Kakashi had many fights with the nurses when they mentioned "pulling the plug" and it wasn't until the Third had come down and talked to them did the nurses finally stop bringing it up. Obito wasn't even brain dead! He had little activity in his brain but that was something!
"I'm fine, sensei, have you heard anything yet?" Minato brought his hand to his head as he looked back at the door. He got an update a few hours ago, Obito was stable, his brain activity had increased 2 percent (which Tsunade said wasn't a good thing) but his right arm and leg were gone.
"He's stable now. I'll stay here the rest of today and you and Kakashi-kun should go home."
Rin frowned, there was something he wasn't telling her, but she trusted him to tell her when the time was right.
"I'm going to see if the hospital needs any help, I'll be back in a few hours." Rin spared one more glance at her sensei before making her way to the nurse's station.
Kushina sighed as she looked back at the man, wondering if he was ever going to take the advice he was dishing out.
ALL GOOD THINGS
Obito lay in the bed unconscious.
Minato had never seen the boy look so fragile, so broken.
"How long till he wakes?"
"I placed him in a chakra-induced coma, I'll keep him in it until I deem him ready for it." Tsunade placed Obito's file down and looked at Minato.
"Listen, there's something that I can try. It's a long and brutal procedure but it might work, I'll need your consent of course." Now Minato was interested, "It involves me implanting Hashirama's cells into Obito's arm and leg." Minato's eyes shot up
"That's too risky, you could miscalculate and Obito would suffer from his life." No, he wouldn't let his student be experimented on. The earlier trials Konoha used all ended in death. He'd rather Obito live with the handicap than ever risk his death.
"You asked me for a chance and I'm giving him one. I've checked the research, and one thing none of it had was me." Tsunade Senju, Legendary Sannin, granddaughter to the First Hokage, Slug Queen, and yes Tsunade was right she was his only chance after all.
"Walk me through the procedure."Tsunade sat down across from Minato,
"I'd consult with Orochimaru before I begin anything. Between the two of us, we should find all the research on the transplant. From the looks of it, I'd have to break down Hashirama's cells and see which part of the cell is compatible with Obito's, that part can take anywhere between two days to weeks. That's when the real process began. While Obito doesn't currently have his arm and leg, I have it reserved. After the cells take kindly to each other I would then implement it into Obito's limbs. It could take anywhere up to a month for his limbs to grow and when that's done, then I will attach his body parts back together." It was a risk. The cells could take nicely to each other but still destroy Obitos limbs. The explanation made sense. But again he knew Tsunade gave him a modified version of the full procedure. She said it'll be long and brutal.
He looked at Obito.
Obito, his student that would want a chance at life again. A chance to be Hokage. And if these were his only options he knew what the boy would pick.
A chance to be normal.
To be seen and acknowledged.
"Ok," he looked at Tsunade, light shining through his cerulean eyes. "I believe in you Hime."
