Real quick I wanna say thank you for reading this. First time actually writing a story here so I hope it's at least entertaining but this is a RWBY self insert so I'm gonna be messing stuff up but not throwing the story directly off course
Also I know I'm starting this out with some specific dates and times but I'm just using it as a way to measure time while over in Remnant. if there is an established calendar for RWBY please tell me and I'll add in the dates and times

I woke up to a very familiar pain coming from my head
…"Ugh, really hope drunk me didn't leave a cup of vodka as a joke." I thought, slowly sitting up and cracking my eyelids open. What greets me first is a glass with two pills next to it and a note which I waste no time on, making sure the glass contains water before grabbing the pills and washing them down with a few sips. After closing my eyes and sighing I opened them and took in the sight of my room, a desk with my desktop and consoles that I use from time to time packed neatly into the corner with my dresser and mini fridge on the other side of the room.
"Looks like I need to apologize to drunk me." The note that I grabbed after setting the glass down had my handwriting on it with obvious signs that whoever wrote it was not gonna pass a field sobriety test. Every letter was a different size with some crossed out sections until the writer thought it was good enough.
"You might not remember but we got into a drinking contest with the family last night. I made sure to fight for 2nd since I knew we can't outdrink mother."
I snorted out a laugh out when I read that, yea lucky her with that high tolerance, best it gets for me is hangovers go away quicker than normal
" I thought that you should know she did bring more 151 black seal rum and Irish whiskey like you asked, probably confirming to you what happened."
Oh yea, I definitely made myself one to many double taps based on the ache that's started to go away. After finishing off the water I grabbed my phone to check the weather and was slightly surprised to see that today was looking to be clear and a little humid unlike the reports a couple days ago which said it was going to rain throughout the week." Ya know what, a beautiful day pops up outa nowhere and I think I'm gonna go camping. Know the perfect spot to."
With my mind made up I got out of bed and got my clothes on consisting of a pair of steel toe Carhartt work boots with some insoles I knew would insure painless movement all day, blue jeans, a white E=mc2 t shirt with the quite "Sir Isaac Newton is the deadliest son of a bitch in space!", and a black leather jacket with white stripes going down each shoulder to the elbow.
When I was ready I walked outside to a beat up purple Ranger XLT. I started towards my truck that I was lucky enough to snab with a 5 speed manual and a v6 engine that runs rough. But she still starts and runs so I started on the short journey to my grandparents 100 acre ranch. About 10 minutes later when I got up to the dirt road leading towards the ranch there was some kind of feeling that today wouldn't just be a lazy Monday. My suspicions were confirmed when I saw a red dodge 1500 sitting in the driveway, my grandmothers truck as I parked and walked around the house to my grandmothers garden.
And judging by the surprised barking from my grandmothers pittie neither she or my grandmother heard my truck pull in as I slowly moved to a crouch to allow the dog to sniff me to calm her down my grandmother asked:
"I guess you saw how the weather was today?"
I nodded then replied "I think I'm gonna camp out in J's Surplus tent."
"Speaking of you better be careful, your uncle J said the coyotes have been a little mysterious lately, not showing on trail cams for weeks then coming back with some kind of glow radiating from them. Thankfully we still see the mama bear on the trail cams pretty regularly and it looks like she's alright for now." she warned
"Gotcha, I'll pack a couple more magazines, do you think I can borrow Just's Beretta as well?"
"I don't see why not, just remember you got to clean and oil it before you hand it back."
"Alright then, thanks ma!" I turned back around to walk inside the house to a gun cabinet that contained surplus magazines, along with my only gun, a simple 5.56mm ar-15 with a quad picatinny rail barrel shroud, red dot sight, forward grip, and black shoulder sling.
Racking the bolt back and releasing it with a satisfying click as the bolt locks into the barrel I slung it over my shoulder, grabbing 12 30 round mags and the needed ammo to fill them from another cabinet.
Finished with loading and organizing everything on my person I went upstairs next and found my uncles .40 Smith & Wesson Beretta and grabbed 3 extra 15 round magazines along with a thigh holster and strapped it down on my right after making sure it was clear, with a full mag, and the safety on.
Going back to the garden I found my grandmother sitting down on a lawn chair with an umbrella over it and said
"OK ma, I'm gonna go up top see you tomorrow or the next day."
"Alright be sure to take some firewood with you though, J said he was low when he left a week ago." She replied turning her head my way to make sure I did
"Yep, have just enough room on the quad to do so" I said as I turned and walked towards the Wood pile to grab a cord or two of firewood. with everything packed and ready to go I put my AR on my quads rack and secured a backpack on me containing food, water, and medical supplies for 3 days should I wish to stay that long. So, what's the top? Well that's what my family calls the highest plateau on my grandparents land, we setup a little camping spot up there with a beautiful view of one of the local rivers especially during sunset… but I'm getting off topic. Short and simple answer there's 3 "levels" in the mountain that makes up a majority of the 100 acres with the rest being used for cattle ranching.

I never had any great expectations in my life. I would be perfectly happy with being a mechanic and would happily work until retirement, but it seems that the fates had a different thought for me. It was perfectly normal the first night, sure I heard things walking around out there but nothing ever tried to get in or sniff around. The second day I walked around near the campsite to see if there was anything wrong with the plants, but they seemed healthier than ever. The second night I set up my own trail cam to see if I could find out what was walking around, and on the third morning just as my grandma warned there was a couple different pairs of coyotes found at the edge of the camera's vision… ever so slightly glowing in the recorded night vision video.
After looking at the tape 2 more times I decided to walk around the campsite in a larger area and found 8 small crystals in a pattern in the dirt about 100 yards away from my campsite. Each crystal had some kind of glow to it and no two crystals were alike. It was a pretty simple pattern of rainbow colored crystals and a pure white one in the center with colored lines the same shade as each crystal pointing to it and with my primitive urge to touch shiny things I decided to pick the white crystal from the ground… it wouldn't budge at all, but when I let go to just look at it my hand slipped and cut itself on the jagged edges of the crystal leaving a gash down my right hand cursing and grabbing the hand I left the crystals alone going back to camp for some gauze and wrapping up my hand.
After treating my hand and chilling for a couple hours the sun started to set and I got ready to pack up in the morning by just checking through everything before I laid down in my sleeping bad and dozed off but woke up at 1am because it looked like someone was shining a flashlight right in my eyes. But after staying still the light didn't go away so I cracked my eyes open and saw that the entire window was illuminated in a bright white glow. That got me up quickly as that sure as hell wasn't a human doing anything, quickly and quietly grabbing my gear I stepped out of the tent to follow the glow towards the location of those crystals from earlier. When I got there, the white crystal was as tall as me (6' 1") and was changing between shades of red, black and white with the other crystals gone almost like the middle crystal absorbed them to grow.
Amazed at how quickly this crystal grew I completely forgot the first rule of unknown things "don't touch the giant shiny thing" and placed my hand on its surprisingly smooth face based on my previous attempt. When my hand fully flattened on the crystal it suddenly stopped changing colors just going into three solid colors from bottom to top before quickly flashing white forcing me to close my eyes and a quick feeling of weightlessness before I smacked my head into something and was persuaded into taking a nap.
Okay, job done first chapter complete. Anyone catch the mass effect reference?
