Author's note this is kind of a crossover pre Chicago PD and its big in the back story for Jay and Libby that will be detailed in Thin Blue Line.
"Come on Reagan. Don't fall asleep on me." Dick Ryker commented leaning over and shaking his partner's arm to keep her awake.
" 'M fine, I just didn't sleep last night."
"Michael?" Michael was Libby's estranged husband and a major cause of stress for the newest detective.
"Mhmm." She muttered, "he kept calling last night and threatened to come to Will's."
Will Halstead was a doctor who she had met at one of the parties she attended with Michael, when they had met things clicked and they were instant friends. And had adventures with him that made her friends in the department, mostly Ryker and Diana Rossi, another female detective and one of the few female friends that Libby, rolled on the floor with laughter.
"Thankfully Will wasn't home." She rubbed her eyes, "he told me I should change my phone number and just move in with him permanently." "You should. But ``''But a part of me still kind of loves Michael and doesn't want to give up on him."
"Lib."
She waved her hand in the air trying to clear the thoughts out of their squad car. "Don't worry Dick I am fine."
"You always say that but we know you aren't."
"If I keep saying it, maybe people will believe me. Yes my relationship is in the toilet, and yes I am living with my best friend. But I am still here and kicking. And I will keep doing it until I get back to normal. Or at least the Libby Reagan normal."
Ryker laughed, "and that ain't normal." Her return laugh was cut short by their radio went static and followed by Sonny Melsvky's voice calling for backup and shots fired at the police. Libby's whole body tensed up as Ryker started the car again and pulled out into traffic.
"I am sure he is fine. I am sure he is fine." He repeatedly glanced at his partner who was trembling her phone in her hand, and the annoying ringing filled the car and then followed by Joe's voice.
"Damn it! Joe answer the damn phone." She hit the call button again praying he would answer the phone.
Her older brother Joe, was on the warrants squad and could be the one that was shot. And until she knew that he was okay, then she would be okay.
"Reagan! Wait!" Ryker shouted as she bailed out of the car as soon as they got to the scene. "Joe! Joe!" She shouted as she dashed to the firing cops. Her eyes darting around the scene, her heart pounding in her ears. She felt like she was the 6 year old girl that got lost in the museum and couldn't find her brothers. "Joe!" "Reagan! Get down!" Detective Gonzales called seeing the youngest Reagan finally spying on her older brother on the ground bleeding.
Not heeding the orders from the other detectives who were now all shouting at her to come back where it was safe, at least until the shooting stopped. More bullets through the air grazing her arm and side, she didn't care, her only goal was to get to her brother.
"Joe!" She cried her hands going to his wounds trying to stop the bleeding. "Libs." He coughed as he reached his hand up to touch her cheek.
"You're going to be okay. You are going to be okay." She repeated before screaming back at the others to call for the ambulance.
"I am right here Joe. I am not leaving you. Just stay with me okay. Don't leave me! Please." She begged as more red, blue and white lights filled the air around them.
"The ambulance is here. You will be okay soon." Her voice was thick with tears. His eyes started to close. "Hey Joe, stay with me. Stay awake." Libby's thoughts were running wild along with her heart. "Don't die please. You promised that you would never leave me! That would always be there to protect me. Stay awake god damn it."
A set of hands wrapped around her biceps to pull her up. "No! Let me go!" She screamed trying to shake the person's hands off of her. "Reagan, the paramedics are here." Sonny Molsvky said, "you got to move." She struggled against his hold trying to get free from his grip. "Let me go!" Her eyes were still on her brother who was being loaded up on the stretcher. "You Lib?" The paramedic closest to them asked. "Yes." "He wants you with him." She shook Sonny's hands off of her and went up to the stretcher and took his bloody hand in hers. "I am right here Joe. I am not going anywhere."
"Libby, I will meet you there, Diana too." Ryder called as the doors swung shut.
"We are losing him!" The paramedic at the head of the stretcher shouted causing Libby to stop her praying and to look at them. "What can I do?" She asked scooting forward, "I have my EMT certification. Let me help. Please."
"Start compressions." The medic ordered Libby went to go and put her hands on his chest again and start pushing up and down. "Come on Joe. Come on." She muttered as the second paramedic put the pads on his chest.
"Pushing Epi." He said after a moment.
"Clear!"'
The first paramedic said as the second put the paddles on pads. Libby pulled her hands back quickly and watched Joe's body jerk off of the stretcher and back again.
"Please. Please. Please."
"Start compressions again!" The youngest Reagan threw herself back into doing the compressions as they pushed another epi into Joe's IV.
"Clear!" She pulled back again and held her hands away from her brother who was shocked again.
"Come on. Joe, come on." She pleaded. "We got his pulse back." The first paramedic said as the doors swung open and the rush of doctors and nurses waiting for them.
"30 year old cop, shot three times in the chest. Gave two doses of epi, and got him back." Libby followed them out of the ambulance shaking from head to toe.
"Joe! It's going to be okay." She repeated as they rushed them to the back. "I am right here."
"Ma'am you can't follow." The nurse said, grabbing a hold of her arm trying to restrain her from following them into the OR.
"Please let me go. That's my big brother. Please." She said looking at the nurse pleadingly. "I am sorry ma'am."
"Libby, come on sweetie." Will's familiar voice said from behind her his own hand wrapping around her arm. Startled, the woman turned and looked at him, "Will? I thought you went home." "I saw you get out of the ambo. You need to get checked out." "What? I am fine!' She said shakily.
"No you aren't, you are bleeding." "I am?" she asked. Will nodded his head and started pulling her to the nurses station to get her checked out.
"Libby!" Erin called as she, Danny, Frank and Henry came into the emergency room, "What happened?"
The adrenaline that was coursing through her body was wearing off and she was aware of the pain she was in.
"Joe was shot three or four times in the chest. He almost died in the ambo. But we got him back." Libby said, holding onto Will's arm for support.
"She has some injuries that we need to look at. They took Joe back to surgery." Will explained, "I will go see what I can find out once she is in a room."
"I will stay with her." Ryker said having come into the department with Grace behind him.
"Will." Libby muttered, tightening her grip on his arm. "I will be right back. You are in good hands."
"We will be in the waiting room Libby." Henry said they all wanted to comfort her and worry about Joe together. But the shape that Libbby was in wasn't good, they had seen it one other time and that was when Michael first sexually assaulted her and she curled into herself and only let her mother and her sister and sister in law near her. She nodded her head and let the nurse lead her into one of the stations.
"Why didn't you listen to me Libby?" Ryker asked, taking a seat on the hard plastic chair that was next to the bed while the nurse started cutting through the blue uniform shirt so they could get to the bloody wounds.
"Because it was my big brother Dick, he was on the ground bleeding, possibly dying. At that moment, I wasn't a cop, I was a little sister trying to save her big brother."
"You could have been seriously hurt."
"And I don't care. Dick you are an only child, you don't know what it's like to have 4 older siblings, all I cared about was trying to save my big brother. Is that a crime?"
"No it's not but you know you have to listen to your superior officer.'
Libby scoffed with a low laugh as one of Will's doctor friends came into the room. "Detective Reagan, let's see what we can do here." He said, "What happened?" "What happened is she decided to play Lone Ranger and tried to save her older brother's life." Libby's hazel eyes narrowed at him, "Shut up Tonto."
Diana touched Ryker's arm, "Why don't we let the doctor work. And give Libby a few minutes alone so she doesn't hurt you?" 'That would be smart.' The doctor agreed, he had stories of Libby from Will and knew just how wild and out of control she could get. "Will has told stories hasn't he?" She asked as she looked at the bloody grazes on her side and on her arm.
"Yes, you are somewhat kind of famous around here." He returned as Libby winced.
"And in my defense, my estranged old man, is the reason why I get so wild and out of control. Says being so reserved and timid, isn't what his future wife should be.' She rolled her eyes, "I am sure that Will told you, I have 4 older siblings, 2 of which are cops, one is an ADA and my twin brother is."
"At Harvard."
"Right. And my grandpa is retired NYPD and my dad is PD Commissioner. And I went to a private catholic school and went to mass every Sunday. It's just not like me to be out of control and wild like that.'
"But when in Rome." Libby used her free hand and touched her nose.
Will stuck his head back into the room, "He's still in surgery. And half the department is out there. And one of them is furious.'
"Let me guess. Sonny Malevsky? Creepy guy, big nose, greasy hair?"
"Yeah that's him. He's saying you didn't follow orders and you need to be suspended." Libby rolled her eyes and looked at the bandage that the doctor just finished putting on her.
"He can kiss my ass, creepy bastard.' The doctor snorted with laughter before looking at his coworker, "We gave her some pain medication to help with the pain." Will nodded his head as Detective Bello knocked on the door, "Detective Reagan, can I ask you a couple of questions?"
"I am done here." The doctor said as he took off his gloves. Will moved into the room and took Ryker's seat. "It's okay if he stays, he's my roommate, he's going to hear all about it."
Bello nodded his head, he had seen the youngest Reagan at BBQ's at her father's house but she was always floating around talking to her siblings and helping her mother and grandmother with the sides. But this Libby Reagan was different then the one he had seen.
"Where were you and Detective Ryker at?"
"We were sitting at the corner of 29th and Broadway. We were watching the house of a suspect in a bunch of robberies. He was in the middle of lecturing me, telling me I should divorce my husband and kick him out. Just like Will has every single day."
"He's right." Will muttered, causing Libby to give him a look.
"Then we heard the call over the radio and I knew that my brother was working that night, he had called me right before I went on shift and he told me that they were going out on a warrant."
"And you left your post?" "Yes, as soon as we heard the officer's down call, we left." Will glanced at his friend and saw that she was fading fast thanks to the pain medication.
"Can you finish this later Detective? She needs to take it easy. And I am sure she wants to be with her family when they find out any news about her brother Joe."
He hated the protective tone in his voice and that he was acting more protective over her then he normally would.
He wanted to blame what had happened with Joe and what was going with Michael. But he knew that it was because she had become like his sister in the short few months that they had been friends and even more so that he wanted her to be with his brother Jay. They would be a good fit. If she ever got smart and left Michael.
"I got a call from Jay today.' Will said once they were alone in the room. Libby's hazel eyes lit up as she shifted to look at him.
"Oh?"
"He and his unit are coming stateside for a few weeks. And he wants to see his little brother."
He could see the glint shining in her eyes. "And he wants to see you." He grinned, "says your letters have been keeping him and Mouse entrained."
"All I do is tell him stories about cases I have worked on. And about growing up with a family full of cops.' She returned with a shrug.
"Admit it. You like Jay."
"No comment." She said as there was a knock on the door frame and Frank, her father and police commissioner walked into the room.
His detail trailing him.
"What's wrong Dad?" Libby asked, sitting up straight, her hand pressing against her side.
"Will, can you give us a minute?" "Sure, Lib, I will go get you my clean scrubs to change into.' He said before standing up and leaving the two alone.
"Dad?" Libby asked again once they were alone, "What's wrong?"
Frank went over to where she was sitting and took her hand in his. He hated that he had to be the one to tell her this but he didn't want her hearing from everyone else.
"Joe died."
"What?" "He didn't make it sweetie, he lost too much blood." He answered.
"No." She muttered as tears started falling down her cheeks splashing onto her hands and lap.
"He can't be.'
Frank didn't repeat the fact that his son was dead and his daughter who tried everything in her power to save failed. He didn't want to hang that on her head. She didn't need that. "It's all going to be okay." He muttered, "I promise."
