Chance Encounter
Chapter 2: Ignorant Patient
A/N: Second chapter! I kind of started this one by myself. Sorry guys! I couldn't help myself. Anyway, this chapter is going to be... full of...obliviousness? I'm going to try reeeealy hard to keep everyone in character. Tell me what you think. Okay. Now read.
"Raven!" Edgar exclaimed, shocked, taking one look at his dark-skinned friend laying the still unconscious girl in the overstuffed sofa in the study."What's this Raven? I never would have taken you for one who would kidnap a lady." Edgar stated lightly, gesturing to the girl before them.
Well aware that he was joking, Raven replied emotionlessly, "She was following me then collapsed. She's injured."
"I see," Edgar said in a slightly more serious tone, "I'll have a physician come look at her then." He clapped his hands twice. "Tompkins."
"Yes my lord?" Tompkins answered, instantly appearing at the doorway.
"Call a doctor. And have Miss Lydia brought up here. I believe she's in the library."
"Right away master."The door closed behind him with a soft click. There was a pause.
"Raven." Edgar broke the silence and Raven looked up from his absorption in staring at the girl to face his master.
"Yes, Edgar-sama?"
"You said she was following you, do you have any idea what the reason for that might be? Did she say anything?"
"No. She was trying to say something before she fainted but I wasn't able to understand her."
"Hn... Well I suppose we'll find out soon enough."Raven nodded once in acknowledgement.
"And another thing Raven," he once again turned to face Edgar, "Did you consider the possibility, that this might be a trap?"
Raven looked down at the unconscious girl seriously. Of course he knew it was a possibility. It was one of the first things that had gone through his battle tuned mind that night when he had turned to see the beautiful woman tailing him. But looking down at her blank face now and seeing the small blotch of blood steadily staining the shoulder of the light white fabric of her dress, he remembered that that wasn't what he had been thinking of when he carried her back here. He hadn't thought. Hadn't needed to think. He just did it, as if it was the most natural thing in the world.
"I don't think so." He finally replied simply. Oblivious to the rare small furrow in his brow as he continued to look at her.
But Edgar didn't miss it. He smiled slightly, hiding it by gazing down at the floor. Quietly he murmured "You're still just as kind-hearted as you were before all this. Despite all you've been through."
Raven, not hearing that last comment, walked over to the doorway and bowing quickly said "I'll go prepare some tea." Then left without any more adieu.
Several moments later Lydia rushed in. The physician was just standing up from leaning over the couch where the sleeping patient lay. "Well, I've dressed her wounds. She should be fine now. I expect she'll wake up in a few hours. It seems that she fainted from blood loss.""Were her wounds so severe?" Edgar asked surprised. The doctor paused in the methodic tidying of his supplies to look up puzzled at the earl."That's what's so unusual. Her wounds shouldn't have been quite deep enough to cause that amount of blood loss. It's possible that something else contributed to her condition." Then he trailed off into other more specific directions as he finished packing his bag and then rushed out the door to some "urgent buiseness".Finnaly Lydia stepped into the room and was able to get a good look at the girl. "How is she? What did the doctor sa-?" Her peridot green eyes widened in surprise. "Why is there a fairy-child here!"
A/N: Noooo! Wait! I have an excuse for it being so short! I wrote this entire thing on the notepad app on my kindle. I just didn't want to wait for my computer to be fixed to publish this, so... Anyway. I promise we'll try to make the next chapter longer so no length flames! Do you think that the characters were IC enough? And thanks Hezerai and Leeann-chan for your bunches of help. Review people! Pleeeease!
