Is forever too much to ask? - chapter 5.
I, Saika-Chan, am here to present to you chapter 5 of 'Is forever too much to ask?'
I know people think I'm being a bit mean to Athrun and Cagalli but this story wouldn't make sense if they got back together right away so bear with me.
Many people have guessed that Ace will play a big part in getting his parents back together, this chapter may reinforce that thought so make sure to hang onto it.
I have a little challenge for all my readers, If you can guess who they are -just one of them- then i will send you a preview of the next chapter before anybody else sees it. Leave your answer in your review, happy guessing :)
Thank you to everybody who reviewed and/or added this story to their Fave/Follow lists, it really makes my day to see them.
Athruns POV
He was finally allowed to leave the hospital, It was a mystery to Athrun why he'd had to stay so long in the first place.
After a final consultation with his doctor this morning they had decided that Athrun was indeed healthy enough to leave the hospital. His bloodwork was still showing abnormalities but the doctors could not pin point the source nor could they fix it.
Stepping through the white-washed doors, he pulled in a breath of fresh air through his nose. It was deifitely good to be outside again without being watched.
Just as he was about to start walking away he spotted a familiar face approaching at a brisk walk.
"Kira?" He asked as the brunette young man came into view with Lacus following closely behind. The scene would not have looked odd if he had not been carrying a child wrapped tightly in a blanket in his arms.
Kira's head shot up, eyes widening when he noticed the blue haired man in front of him. "Athrun? Look I don't have time to chat right now, Alexander's got a bad fever and has to see a doctor," (A/N: Ace's full name is Alexander Zala, Kira uses this name to avoid Athrun recognising the name 'ACE' which Cathryn previously used in the hospital) He said, his face contorting with worry for the childs health.
Athrun glanced at the child swathed in blankets, "Is he your son?" he asked.
The child reminded him slightly of the infant child that had been plaguing his dreams for the past few nights. In most of the dreams that had included his blond former lover, there was a small blond boy. He looked like a combination of himself and Cagalli. Short blond hair sewpt slightly to the side and piercing green eyes that held the innocence of childhod yet looked as though they could penetrate your very soul.
Kira shook his head quickly, "Just a friend of the family. His parents are out of town so we're taking care of him," he replied, beginning to look more anxious by the second.
Athrun nodded seeing the panicked look on his friends face and discerning that he was anxious to get the child to a doctor, he thought he saw a flash of blond dart after the couple before continuing on his way.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Forever ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cagalli sighed as she managed to make it past Athrun without being seen, it felt physically painful to watch Athrun look the child in the eye and not recognise him. She was glad that Ace was not awake for she feared that it would only serve to break his heart even more.
This morning when she had gone to check on her young son she had found him freezing with the covers wrapped tightly around himself, yet when she took his temperature it was 102.4.
She had panicked and called Kira, asking if he could come and take Ace to the hospital for her, completely forgetting that she was supposed to be taking Cathryn to see Athrun.
Upon arriving at the hospital their advance had been thwarted by none other than Athrun Zala himself. Quickly dodging behind a tree, she had listened to the brief conversation that transpired between him and her brother.
Now she sat in the waiting room on a hard plastic chair awaiting the results of the tests that they were running on her son.
"Cagalli Athha?" a doctor called out from the door of the room directly opposite her.
Standing quickly, she walked into the room to see her son hooked up to various machines. The sight was horrifying, to parent wants to see their child in that sort of vulnerable state.
She immediatly sat beside him and began to stroke his hair, muttering quietly about how it was going to be alright.
"Miss Athha?" The doctor said, directing her attention towards him.
"We have run several tests in your son, It would seem that he is suffering from Leiukemia, a type of cancer that occurs in the blood. We think it would be in his best intertest to find a match for his blood type so that we can perform a transplant." The doctor said.
Cagalli sat stock still, not wanting to believe what she had been told. Her son was nine years old and he was suffering from cancer? What else was life going to throw at her before she was simply forced to give in?
Nodding her head slowly she tried to come to terms with what she had been told. "I'll just go and call the family. We shoudl get the all to come here so we can find a suitable match for Ace." Kira said, patting his sister on the shoulder.
At first Cagalli tensed up but then she slowly began to relax as she became resigned to the fact that everything she had heard was in fact true.
"Yeah..." She said quietly, her gaze once again landing on her sickly son.
It was as if life was determined to throw everything it had at her trying to test how much she could take before she broke. "First they take her husband then they take her daughter and now they wanted to take her son as well?
Lacus walked over and sat down softly beside Cagalli. "He's going to be alright you know?" she said, softly placing a hand on her shoulder.
Cagalli remained silent, listening to what Lacus had to say. "You have to be strong for Ace, and for Cathryn too. They are both going to need in the times ahead and I'm confidant that you will be there for them." she pink haired songstress stated.
Cagalli nodded, taking in what her sister in law had to say.
Then a idea popped into her head. "I think i should get in touch with Durandal and the rest of them. The chances are that Athrun will be the only suitable donor considering that Ace is much more a coordinator than a natural." she said, suddenly looking just a little more hopeful.
Lacus on the other hand frowned, "I don't think that's a good idea, they don't play fair, you had to find that out the hard way." she shook her head.
However Cagalli was determined and now that she had the idea in her head there was little that anybody could do to stop her from acting on it.
"All I need to do is get them to re-negotiate the terms of the agreement we made. If I can do that then I'll be able to tel Athrun about Ace and I should have a suitable donor." she reasoned, trying to make Lacus see her side of the argument.
Lacus was about to answer when Kira re-entered the room, followed closely by Yzak and Shiho -baby Lilli was not present- and Dearka who had a worrid frown on his face.
The pink haired songstress turned to Kira with a pleading look on her face, "Kira, Cagalli says she wants to try and get in contact with them. I tried to dissuade her from the idea but she won't budge." she said.
Kira looked shocked for a second and then he looked angry. "Cagalli, that's the single most stupid idea i have very heard in my life! Do you know how much danger you would be in if you tried going back on your word?" he almost shouted, trying to knock some sense into his sister.
Yzak stepped forward. "We heard about Ace's condition but do you know how reckless it would be to try and negotiate with them?" He asked, "Even if you get what you want at first they will always get their way in the end. That's just the way it works with them" He finished
Cagalli would not budge on her desicion. She had made up her mind and nobody was going to change it for her.
This was no longer only about her and Athruns chance at happiness, this was about her sons life and that was something that she was not willing to sacrifice.
Kira suddenly cut in, looking as though he had just remembered something important. "None of the family's blood types match Ace's. I think Cagalli may be right in saying that this may be that childs only chance. This doesn't mean that I like the idea but I'm not about to let Ace suffer when there is something that we could be doing about it." He said, looking resigned to the fact that his sister was in fact right.
Cagalli pulled out her cell, ignoring the silent protests from the other people in the room.
She punched in the number which she had come to know well and waited while it rung once...twice...three times and then...
"Hello Miss Athha, how may I help you?"
Cliffhanger! Thank you for reading chapter 5! I hope you enjoyed it and i tried to update much sooner this time to make up for the long gaps in between updates.
Don't forget to leave your guess about who they might be, if somebody manages to get it right then i will send them a preview of the next chapter before if is released to everybody else.
Things to think about:
What will their reaction be to Cagalli's request?
Why is Dearka so worried?
If Cagalli married Athrun then why does she go by Cagalli Athha?
The next chapter will mostly consist of flashbacks.
Small preview:
"If you don't give her back soon them I'm afraid that she'll never call me mother!"
"I don't know, she seems quite comfortable and happy with me and Talia."
Ja Ne, till next time,
