On the surface of the lake, the fairies quickly regrouped, now planning what to do in case Leech managed to break out from under the ice and also what to do with Grimsley, who was now, having snapped out of the daze he had received earlier, trying to pull himself out of the tree trunk. Iridessa was hesitant to stay here and insisted that they all leave straight away, something that Silvermist and Clank also considered. Fawn, Sled, Rosetta and Tinkerbell, on the other hand, were confident in staying here and tried to reassure the others that the trolls were not going to go for them again.
Oh how wrong they were.
"Um, guys, what is that moving under the ice?" Bobble asked, stopping the conversations in the group as they all looked down through the thin part of the ice where the hole had been moments before. A large shadow was moving in the water beneath them. "Is that-"
CRASH! The ice seemed to explode as if a bomb had gone off underneath it as Leech broke through the ice, sending large chunks of the frozen water, as well as a wave of the freezing liquid below in all directions. The fairies, taken by surprise, were knocked over by the force of the breakthrough. As they recovered from the shock, their eyes fell on Leech, who looked like some kind of overgrown tomato. His face was red like one, his teeth were clenched, as were his fists, his eyes were narrowed to almost slits and only one thought was going through his mind: GET THE FAIRIES NO MATTER WHAT!
Clank gulped. "I think we better skate!" he said.
"You got that right!" Leech replied and dived for them.
The fairies scattered as quickly as they could, Tinkerbell and Periwinkle only just missing his hand but quickly he recovered himself and took after them and Fawn, moving his legs as fast as he could in an effort to catch them. Periwinkle saw the danger and, in desperation, grabbed her sister and Fawn by their arms and quickly lifted them off the ice and onto the snow next to them, only just missing a swipe of Leech's hand. He growled at missing, but pressed on, now setting his sights on Clank and Bobble.
"Oh no, Clanky!" Bobble cried in a panicked voice, jumping onto his larger friend, who quickened his skating as fast as his legs would enable him to as Leech got closer to them. "Faster, Clanky! Faster!" Bobble cried again, the ever growing fear noticeable in his voice.
"I'm trying, Bobble!" Clank cried in reply, trying as best as he could to put some distance between them and the troll, but Leech, who was now a few feet, by fairy measurements, behind them, reached out and grabbed them tightly in his fat fist. Both struggled as best they could but in vain as he lifted them up to his mouth.
"Finally!" he growled in relief as he held them just inches above his mouth. "Through the teeth and over the gums, look out stomach here it comes!" he said in a voice with pleasure, dangling the two over his open, cavernous mouth.
"AH! Oh no!" Bobble cried.
"Hey, let 'em go!" Vidia, who stopped nearby upon seeing the two Tinker fairies in danger, but Leech just sent out his foot and hit Vidia hard on her front, knocking her back across the ice and into the snow.
"HAHA! Sorry, but I'm hungry!" Leech shouted over to her as Tinkerbell and several others rushed over to see if she was alright. He opened his mouth, sticking out his large tongue, and held the two fairies over it.
"OI! 'Ang on a minute!" came Grimsley's voice, startling Leech as he looked over his shoulder to see Grimsley rushing over, having pulled himself out of the tree trunk. "What about me?!" he demanded vociferously.
"You can wait!" Leech barked back, waving his hand at his friend to try and deter him from demanding any further, but Grimsley just pressed on and, grabbing Leech, wheeled him round.
"Right, now you listen to me, fuzz face!" he growled, poking his shorter companion in the chest. "I've slaved just as much as you have, and I got us the skates!" he barked vehemently.
"Excuse me, who was the one doing the catching?!" Leech barked back, holding up his fist with Clank and Bobble in it to prove his point.
Grimsley growled and grabbed the branches around Leech's neck and pulled him so close that their large noses were touching; anger blazing in his eyes and the few teeth he had in his mouth clutched together to almost breaking point. Leech in turn, tightened both of his hands, which made Bobble and Clank gasp in pain as they felt themselves be crushed between his fingers.
"Now you listen 'ere, knucklehead!" he growled. "Gimme one of those fairies or I'll knock you to kingdom come!"
"No way, they're mine!" Leech held them behind his back and used his other hand to hold Grimsley away.
"Hey, look!" Clank suddenly exclaimed, pointing over to the nearby trees, causing everyone else to look in the same direction.
Sure enough, they all quickly spotted something moving through the trees, pushing them aside effortlessly as it went. A large shadow became visible as it neared the pond but stopped near one of the hills. Everyone on the pond examined the shadow. It was tall, very tall, and quite bulky but because it was hidden by the snow covered trees they could not identify it. All were transfixed by the shadow.
"What is that?" Leech asked Grimsley.
"Well how should I know, I'm not psychic!" the larger troll replied in a snapping tone, though he did step back a pace as if he knew what, or who the shadow was and gave Leech a slight push from behind. "Go see what it is," he said to him.
"Me?!" Leech exclaimed, throwing his arms up in the air and in doing so he inadvertently let go of Clank and Bobble, throwing them into the snow on the edge of the frozen pond, but they were unhurt. Leech and Grimsley did not even notice. "Why do I have to go?!" Leech demanded angrily. "Why don't you go?!"
"N-no!" Grimsley replied, trembling a little.
"Why?!"
"B-because I'm-" but that was as far as he got.
All of a sudden, both were lifted up into the air by some telepathic force, startling them and the fairies, who looked on in astonishment as the trolls were lifted high into the air, both of them shouting and flailing their arms around like crazy as if that would help them get down but it did not.
"What the heck is going on?" Spike asked, dumbfounded.
"No idea," Fawn replied, equally confused.
"AHH! What's happening?!" Grimsley shouted fearfully.
"How should I know?" Leech shouted back.
High and higher the two trolls were lifted higher into the air, the ground quickly becoming further and further away from them. Then, all of a sudden they stopped. Leech and Grimsley looked at each other for a moment as if to say: "What now?"
They were just about to get their answer.
Suddenly, both dropped like a stone and for a few seconds their screams filled the air as they fell, flailing their arms around desperately in the vain hope that that would slow them down, but it did not work. The fairies watched them fall with astonished and shocked gazes, wondering what, or who could have done this to the trolls.
SMASH! The ice seemed to explode as if a bomb had landed on it and gone off, throwing large chunks of it, along with a wave of water, in all directions. Luckily, the fairies were at the far end of the pond so they were safe from any bits that fell in their direction; the closest being a few inches behind them. When they looked back at where the two had landed they saw a sight that amazed them.
Both of the trolls had somehow been frozen completely on the spot and were now posing each on one foot with the other bent up behind them; their arms spread out in front of them with as if they were ballerinas performing for an audience and their faces were frozen into their terrified expressions they had had when they hit the ice. All that seemed to move on them now were their eyes, which looked left and right every few seconds.
As expected, the fairies were dumbfounded and quickly questions such as "Who did that?" "Did you see that?" "What sort of magic was that?" began to flutter among them. It all, however, came to a quick halt when Gliss pointed over to the shadow as it began to push through the last of the trees and into the open, revealing himself.
Tinkerbell gasped, as did Periwinkle, Fawn and Rosetta. Sled muttered "Whoa!" under his breath, Silvermist, Clank and Bobble looked at each other with wide-eyes, Gliss stood motionless, eyes as wide as dinner plates, Iridessa, Spike and Vidia all muttered different things under their breaths but they were too quiet for them to be written down. Then, amazingly, they all smiled.
"Well' I'll be, I never thought he'd of all people would show up," Vidia commented approvingly.
