Definition of the Countless Greys
It was strange, really, how connected everything was.
Remus sat in the Shrieking Shack as the transformation racked his body, and thought about the world. The world had never been kind to him nor those in it. But he had always felt that somewhere there was a speck of good in it.
He had found that speck of good, and made it grow inside him until it glowed, and he held it like a talisman close to his heart.
And sometimes that was the only thing that kept him sane. That kept him human.
But as light and dark fought their battles and everything faded to gray, Remus couldn't help but wonder if he was as well. Fading, losing the light but the darkness also, fading until there was nothing left but a wisp of boy blown away by an uncaring wind.
But he held on, he had always held on. He had lived for his mother, lived for his father, lived for his friends. But you can't keep living for others forever. And there is more to life than surviving.
But, he realized, letting his illusions fall away, it was far more complicated than that. Over time, he had let himself need others, need their friendship, their love- had let them need him.
And they did need him, Remus was sure of it in a way that wasn't in the slightest egotistical.
The Marauders needed Remus to remind them of the consequences, of their purpose, of why they did what they did, and how it affected others, and who they wanted to be- who they were on their way to becoming.
Because they were on their way to becoming something wonderful.
And over the years, as the golden autumns and summers fell away, they were stripped of their illusions and filled with something beyond themselves, something that moved them to fight for those very golden days, that they might never end.
And it was grand and important and right, so very right, and Remus had never felt any surer of anything in his life.
And the boy that had never been needed, never needed, but always, always loved was now all of those things, and he rose, blinking the last traces of the wolf from his mind.
Remus' mind was as clear as ice, and he knew beyond any shadow of a doubt where he stood.
And as he emerged from the tunnel, Remus Lupin looked to the heavens and the fading morning star seemed to whisper 'So be it…'
Because the gray was fading, and the light was rising, and the dark was coming fast to meet it.
A/N: Well, that wasn't what I intended to write, but I think it turned out better than it would have. This one isn't very humorous, but I thought it kind of tempered the other ones out. Sorry if the last AN confused you, originally there was another chapter 2 that was a oneshot that I deleted because it sucked. So, yeah. I'd appreciate some feedback on this and Resolutions ;). As always, thanks for reading!
Love, Leviosa
