Timeline: Literally the day after chapter one.
Pegasus didn't knock on the door at an unearthly hour by normal standards, but when Giovanni opened his east-facing door he could see more of the sun than he liked.
The man in front of him luckily still looked like he had been up very, very late (not all night, Giovanni had insisted that Pegasus leave before he had spent an entire night with a man) drinking.
He closed the door in his face very slowly, so he would know it was his deliberate intention to completely reject him and not a knee-jerk reaction that was done without thinking. Pegasus, as he found out, had never learned to take a hint, and continued to knock on the door with increasing volume. When this failed to open the door, he started yelling loudly to be let in, a not uncommon occurrence where Giovanni lived, so it also had no effect on the locked door. It was when Pegasus began to threaten to call his men to break down the door that Giovanni was finally forced to give-in. Pegasus was rich enough (Giovanni-speak for crazy) enough to follow through on his threat. Giovanni opened the door for him and walked back into the apartment, passing into the kitchen to find some coffee since he knew he wouldn't be going back to sleep.
He didn't bother to offer Pegasus a cup, though he could see him waiting for it. He felt it only right to crush one of Pegasus' dreams since he had interrupted one of his.
Once he had his brew (favoring strength over flavor), Giovanni sat down and said,
"Get out."
"We have an agreement," Pegasus replied. "We're supposed to work together."
"That doesn't give you an open-invitation to come to my home."
Pegasus sighed, "How else can I contact you?"
"I'm in the phone book," he said as he sipped his coffee.
"…Is there more of that coffee?"
Giovanni made no movement to get up, but motioned towards the kitchen. Pegasus went himself and found the pot. He smelled it and decided he had better not chance it. He quite liked his teeth white and to possess enamel.
"Do you have any tea?"
"Check the lower drawer on the far end."
Pegasus opened the drawer and found a surprisingly good selection of tea.
"Nice spread. Recommend anything?"
"I don't like tea. Take whatever."
Pegasus grabbed a bag of green-tea and started heating his water in the microwave.
The hum of the machine filled the silence (from Pegasus) that Giovanni found perfect and that Pegasus himself found awkward.
"Why do you have all that tea if you don't drink it?" he asked, breaking the quiet.
"Some girls like tea."
Pegasus gave a short laugh before realizing that was the legitimate (and only) reason for Giovanni to buy tea.
"You're serious about that."
"I'm serious about everything I do."
The microwave dinged.
Pegasus had nothing to answer to that as he came back into the seating area and blew on his drink to cool it off.
"Now tell me why you're here," Giovanni demanded, glaring at him.
"I need to be sure what kind of man you are," he explained.
Giovanni stared at him, "You blackmailed me into helping you without knowing that?"
Pegasus sniffed, "I didn't blackmail in the least. It's a mutual agreement."
Giovanni didn't answer and continued his staring.
"What I mean to say, is that I need to know your limits. Because if you lay into me again, I don't know if this partnership will last."
"You deserved it."
Pegasus shook his head, "I need to know exact limits. Which is why I'm going to test you."
"Test me how?"
"Well, I was thinking that the best way to get to know someone is to spend time with them."
"No."
"My dear fellow, this is non-negotiable. I'm not about to give myself over to someone I can't trust."
It was sound reasoning which made it even more unbearable for Giovanni.
"How does this plan of yours go?"
Pegasus bounced with excitement. Giovanni wondered if he could fake a trip well enough to spill his moderately hot coffee on the man.
"I'm going to shadow you. That way I can see what kind of person you are."
They just stared at each other for several minutes, saying nothing. But Pegasus wasn't going to back down, and Giovanni supposed he could also observe his eccentric business partner as well.
"I'll agree on certain conditions, and these are also non-negotiable."
"Go ahead."
"You can observe me all you like tonight as long as you stay out of my way."
"That's—"
"Those are my terms. Nighttime is my time, fancy pants."
Pegasus thought. "I accept, with one small adjustment. I won't interfere with you directly."
"Explain."
"All I'll say is that it doesn't make any sense to observe someone in their normal surroundings."
Giovanni was wary of agreeing, but he didn't like the thought of backing down and he didn't want to seem like he was afraid of anything Pegasus might think up. So he nodded curtly.
Pegasus set his empty cup daintily back on the table.
"I'm assuming breakfast is out of the question?"
Giovanni sincerely doubted that whatever he got out this deal would be worth the trouble.
He guessed that he was incognito, but Pegasus just didn't blend in with any part of the crowd. Not that this worried Giovanni, Pegasus seemd enough of a prissy to keep his word about not interfering—though if that was in his favor or not Giovanni hadn't decided.
What concerned him was Pegasus' plan for indirect meddling. He didn't know what Pegasus was trying to find out, so he had no idea what the test would be. He did his best to act as if Pegasus wasn't annoying him, but he was on edge the entire evening, compounded by the fact that Pegasus wasn't interacting with him, but he stuck out so much that it was obvious to Giovanni that wherever Giovanni sat, he was staring intently at him. And obvious to the people around Pegasus' tables as well. It was all he could do to get through his set without ordering him out via his fist.
Between sets, he sat at one of the large tables drinking with the band, some of the longtime fans and whoever had caught his eye. But he kept glancing around him, waiting for something to happen. It seemed as if the whole room had gone out of its way to be noisy and distracting to tick him off that night.
There was a sudden disturbance from behind him and he turned in his chair to find out what it was. It was Pegasus, who it had seemed had finally creeped out the customers around him enough that they were throwing him out of the bar, but if he was about to be beaten by the bouncers or saved from some of the patrons was unclear. He wondered if this was Pegasus' plan: see if Giovanni came to his rescue on his own. He weighed his options:
Either it was fake or it was real. If he refused to help Pegasus in either case he might lose this partnership, but he wasn't about to make a habit of saving Pegasus' skin every time he got into a little scrape. End results: If he refused and it was fake, Pegasus was none the worse for wear. If it was real…If it was real Pegasus would just have to declare that he was connected to the band and they'd leave him alone on Giovanni's account.
"My fellow consumers," Pegasus started in a tone meant to placate but the words prevented that meaning from coming across.
"Did you just call us costumer?" Someone from the back yelled.
Protests were futile as he saw Pegasus pushed out the door and three or four of the men decided that he needed to be shown that he wasn't welcome at the bar. Giovanni, sat for a few seconds more contemplating his evening "with" Pegasus so far and decided at that moment that he was an idiot and there was no helping him.
His next set was starting.
It was walking to another bar later after the show, out on the prowl after the female population at the gig proved less than satisfactory, that he discovered that Pegasus had been lying in wait for him in an alleyway.
He didn't look bad. Mostly his clothes were wrinkled. Giovanni stopped where he was and looked at him.
"You're still here," he said.
Pegasus nodded, "I had to tell you that you passed the test."
Giovanni wasn't often shocked, so the emotion didn't register on his face very well. He just stared at Pegasus harder, which caused him to go into further detail.
"I wanted to see if that persona I see in the bar was real, or if you'd throw it away for a chance at quick riches. You didn't help me, and I thank you for that, strangely. Whatever you teach me is going to be the real deal, and not just something I want to hear."
Giovanni nodded and lit up a cigarette.
"I thought that crowd might've been fake," he said, taking a pull and blowing out smoke with his sentence.
Pegasus touched a spot on his upper arm, "Oh, no. They were quite real."
"And you didn't tell them you were with me?"
"No, I didn't," he smile thinly. "I remembered that much."
Giovanni was just the slightest bit impressed that Pegasus was willing to sacrifice that much for his test. He wasn't a complete waste after all.
Giovanni couldn't help but asking, "Where were your men?"
Pegasus motioned to Giovanni to walk with him.
"There are no men."
"What?"
"I just wanted to know how'd you react if you were in an unfamiliar situation. Besides, I want as few people knowing about the nature of our deal as you do."
Parting way at the end of the street, Giovanni reflected on Pegasus' plan and told himself it was very primitive. But very effective and sneaky.
He smirked just a little.
It was all either needed to know.
