I...-I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think it would be good for both of us if we took just a short break from our love-love relationship. We can be back on in about 2 days, when both of us have had time to cool off and think. But until then…I only want to be friends."
Cato blinked. He moistened his lips and stared at the ground. Finally, he looked up, his eyes stone hard, but softening once more.
"Okay."
I WAKE up in a cold sweat. I'd been tossing and turning all night. That boy from 12…Holy Capitol, I don't even know his name. He wasn't arrogant like Cato, yet with the same charm and looks. I remembered when he was training. He just lifted up those medicine balls like they were plastic CHAIRS. I sat up and sighed. Too bad one of us has to die. I get out of the tent and find that everyone else is up except for Glimmer. I roll my eyes. I walk over to her and throw a bow at her.
"WAKE UP, SLEEPING BEAUTY!" I yell at her. Like, hello? Certain death hanging at every corner? Like, we are NOT your personal bodyguards. You die, not my problem. In fact I just might be the one to kill her but…ehrm, back to the situation.
"You did not!" I barely make out through my laughs.
"Yeah, I did!" Cato smirks back.
"How'd you even get the nightshade in his sleeping bag?" Glimmer asked. Uh, I don't know. Walk into the cave and do it while the dude's HUNTING?
"The kid was out hunting so I just snuck in." Told you so.
Just then we heard a branch snap from behind Cato. Phoenix immediately stood up, morning star held in hand. Peeta unsheathes his dagger. Marvel slipped a spear behind his head, ready to throw. Glimmer snaps up her bow, arrow in place. I quickly grab a knife from my arsenal in my vest, long and thin, best for throwing, and poise it ready to throw. And this is all simultaneously. All Cato does is turn around from his seat on the log slowly with a smile on his face.
"Come out, come out, wherever you are." He says in a sing-songy voice. The boy from 3 steps out of the forest.
"PLEASE DON'T KILL ME!" is the first thing he screams. We lower our weapons slightly.
"I'll give you one shot to give us a good reason. Screw it up, you're screwed." I say. He hesitates.
"I think I can figure out how to dig up the mines from the platforms." He says. We lower our weapons completely. I step towards him, and he flinches.
"Relax, 3. What's your name?"
"Carson."
Peeta's POV
"Carson." He replies. At this point, I ask him how he's going to replace those mines.
"I took a year in Mines back in my District. As long as somebody doesn't kill me during the process," at this point Clove laughs (which did not make me jealous. No, not one bit. Just putting that out there. Okay, maybe.), "I can replant them to whatever destination you want them to be."
Cato calls everyone for a meeting. We sit, Carson armed with a throwing axe in one hand.
"Weapons, we keep. Other things, we have to build that up. Figure out a pathway to it, too." Cato whispers.
"Wait, what? What are we doing?" I ask.
"Shut it, 12." Cato snaps.
"We're building up a pile of all our supplies and planting the mines around it. We have to figure out a way to get there, though. Some of our medicine is gonna be with us, all weapons with us, but everything else is going on that pile." Clove answers with a slight smile at me, a glimmer in her eyes.
"T-t-thank you." I stammer. Her eyes are amazing. The way she looks at me with that messy hair that only she could pull off, and that body-wait. Our conversation ended. She's still looking at me. Clove was still glancing at me, turning pink. I smile at her. She turns full on blush and excuses herself.
"I-I-um, I gotta g-g-go um, sharpen, um the knives. Um, yeah. T-t-the knives." She quickly stammers and walks away. I sit and sigh. What's it going to take for her to be in my arms?
Cato's POV
I'm a lot of things, but I'm not an idiot. You think I didn't see how those two were looking at each other? I don't care if we're playing it cool for now. I don't care what I have to do. That girl is going to end up in my arms.
Clove's POV
I sigh as I walk over to the stream. Why couldn't one of them just…die? Did I really love both of them so much that I had to think of that? I drink some water from the stream. The walk must've made me light-headed, I lean back to support myself, one hand always on the throwing knife attached to my belt. My breathing gets heavier as black starts to faze my vision from the corners. Find me, 12. Is the last thing I think before I pass out.
