Hi everyone! So I had a bit of writers block for this chapter but in the end I decided to write it about Jenny. I have definitely got into the flow of shipping Jalec now, thanks to the Christmas Special clips! So, yeah, enjoy!
Trixie and Cynthia were on call, thank goodness. Chummy was out with Little Fred, and the Nuns were in chapel. It was going perfectly. All too perfectly, Jenny thought, which in her life was a usual sign of things going wrong.
She was wearing her favourite white and yellow dress, with a yellow cardigan. She barely wore her green anymore because it reminded her of her. Francine.
But she shouldn't be thinking about them now. It was her time. Her golden moment. Ugh, Jenny thought, I sounded like Trixie then!
Jenny strided out her bedroom door, grabbing her handbag on her way out. Quickly checking the corridor was empty, she hurried out, her door closing with a click behind her.
She had never noticed what an annoying loud click her heels made on the hard floor before. Surprisingly, she was not paralysed with fear as she had expected herself to be. She didn't even know where they were going. Somewhere far away from her, she hoped. She needed to get away from Poplar, from the constant stress and claustrophobia of her work. She felt as if she was constantly being strangled when she was in Nonnatus House. She needed to get some air. To feel young, and free, while she still could. Everyone thought she was the capable one, the one nervous to leave Poplar. But she wasn't, not inside. She was fed up of holding herself in. She just wanted to show herself to the world.
Jenny practically ran down the steps as she saw a smiling Alec standing next to a rather flashy looking vehicle.
"Hello, Alec." She smiled at him.
"Hi, Jenny!" Alec grinned enthusiastically at her. "I thought we could go for a spin?"
"Sounds great." She replied.
"Okay, great! Shall we go then?" He gestured towards the car and she followed. He reached to open the door for her as she got in, like a true gentleman, Jenny thought with a smile.
"It's a lovely day for a drive." Jenny remarked.
"Yes, it is rather!" Alec exclaimed, "I couldn't have hoped for better weather!"
Alec started off, the engine purring quietly.
"Where are we going?" Jenny asked.
"Um, it's a secret."
"Ugh, I hate secrets! Tell me? Please?" Jenny leaned in closer to him. He looked surprised then smiled shyly and shook his head.
About half an hour later, Alec was driving them around the countryside.
To Jenny's surprise she was really enjoying herself. Alec was very charming and after a few minutes of his (quite bad) jokes she had forgotten all about last night's trouble with Mrs Brown's triplets. She had been pondering over this all morning.
"We're nearly there now!" Alec told her, grinning.
"Oh, I wish you would tell me!" Jenny replied, smiling.
Alec just smiled back smugly in response.
Jenny found that Alec not telling her where they were going did not frustrate her like it did when other people didn't tell her things. This intrigued her. Why was Alec different from everyone else?
Suddenly they drove over a rather steep hill, and Jenny could see everything. She gasped in amazement at the glorious view that was before her eyes. The sun was glistening in the sky and there wasn't a cloud in sight, even though it was October!
"I came here with my family when I was a little boy." Alec informed her. "I still remember it so well. It is one of the strongest memories of my childhood. That's why I brought you here, Jenny. I wanted our first outing together to be special. Something with real meaning. I wanted you to remember it forever."
Jenny's heart contracted. No-one had ever said anything like that to her before.
"I will remember it forever." Jenny looked into his eyes and she felt something, an intoxicating feeling that filled her with a strange sense of happiness and giddiness. This feeling was quite unknown to her. She supposed it must be love.
Then Jenny realised she was just staring into Alec's eyes. Alec laughed as he saw her come back down to earth, and Jenny laughed too, erasing all feelings of awkwardness that may have later occurred.
"It's quarter to two, what time are you on call?" Alec asked.
"Half past five." Jenny told him.
"Okay," he replied, "we've got about 3 hours to go for a walk."
Jenny smiled more at that, she loved countryside walks, and had done since she was a little girl.
"Here we are!" Alec announced, pulling into a sort of country-style lay-by.
"Do you know where we're actually going?" Jenny asked while getting out of the car.
"Rule One of a date, never question a man's sense of direction."
Jenny laughed then they started to walk.
The time went very quickly when they were walking. Before long it was half past three and Alec said that they needed to start heading back. They had walked for miles but Jenny wasn't very tired at all, probably due to the miles and miles of cycling she did around the East End!
When they got back to the car it was about quarter to five.
Jenny noticed that Alec wasn't at all out of breath either.
She had always seen him with lots of layers (mainly his big black coat) on, but she supposed he must be quite well-built. Jenny was extremely aware of a blush creeping up her neck at her thoughts. She quickly put her hand up to her neck in attempt to cover it.
Once (she thought) her blush had gone away she stroke up a conversation with Alec about their childhoods and by the time they got back to Nonnatus House Jenny knew pretty much everything about Alec's many brothers, sisters and cousins, including the time where Alec's older brother Thomas was locked in the toilet for 5 hours because no-one else was home and finally when Alec and a few cousins actually got home they had to literally wade through piles of old toys and boxes and stuff to try and find a ladder so Thomas could climb out the window and get down that way. Once Alec's cousin Jack had actually climbed up the ladder and nearly fallen off several times, Thomas had managed to unlock the door and was downstairs in the kitchen eating a sandwich!
Alec insisted he helped Jenny out of the car, despite her protests.
Then, when she was at the door, Alec leaned in and kissed her full on the mouth, Jenny was so shocked for a second, but then she relaxed and started to kiss Alec back. It felt wonderful, beautiful almost. Kissing Gerald nowhere near compared to this. She felt truly happy, the most happy she had been in a while.
There was no problem with her and Alec's relationship, they were completely right, completely allowed, unlike Jenny's previous relationships. This was new, this was the future. And Jenny knew that this change was for the better.
Hope you enjoyed this chapter! As always, please review if you have the time. I'll try to upload the next chapter asap!
