Chapter 2
She's holding the small picture that the doctor gave her in her hands, cradling it in her lap. The city is slowly passing by the window of the car. He's driving her back to his place. She hasn't looked up from the picture since they got in the car.
"Penny for your thoughts." He asks, stealing a glance at her.
She turns, catching his gaze. "Only a penny?" She quarks an eyebrow.
"I'd give you the moon to know what is on your mind." She smiles.
"I'm good with a penny." She stops, but only for a second, gathering her words. "I'm scared. I've never done this before, what if I mess it up? What if something happens at work and-"
He cuts her off. "Nothing is going to happen. You know why?" She only looks at him. "Because we're a great team."
She raises her eyebrow, trying to hold the smile that threatens her lips.
"Like Starsky and Hutch. Or Turner and Hooch." She snorts as she releases a laugh.
"You do remind me a little of Hooch." He smiles, thankful to get her mind out of the dark places it was headed down only moments before. He knows that she was thinking of her mom and he can't blame her in the slightest, Alexis was raised without her mother, but at least he could say her mother was still on this earth, only a phone call away. Not Johanna Beckett, he had always liked Johanna, it was no mystery to him where Kate inherited her haunting beauty, dazzling smile, charming laugh, and incredible sense of humor. In one word Kate Beckett was extraordinary.

They had both decided to take a day to themselves, relax and do as little as possible. Martha had taken Alexis out for the day, shopping and lunch. His mother had known what the day would hold, good or bad, so she took it upon herself to spoil his daughter with a day of just the girls. It was nearing time for lunch. The couple was in the midst of throwing together a salad when Rick caught Kate by the hip and pulled her into him.
"Let's go to the Hamptons. For the weekend. Just the two of us. Mother can come on Sunday with Alexis. Just a mini vacation." He whispered against her lips. He could feel her smile as he kissed her.
"I'm not on call this weekend. We could do it." She said against his lips when she pulled millimeters away from him.
"We could leave after we finish." He kisses her lightly, on the corner of her mouth. "We would have tonight and tomorrow night to ourselves." He's at the opposite corner now. "Do whatever you please." His lips finally landing on hers softly.
When she pulls away, she smiles. "That is if we ever finish lunch."
"Who says we have to finish lunch?" He jokes lightly as she tries to pull away.
"Me and the tiny alien growing inside of me." He holds her hand, he's anchored to where he's standing, arm outstretched keeping them linked together.
"Good point." He says smartly, moving to accompany her at the table.

They finish eating and cleaning the dishes. Of course they do get a wee bit distracted while trying to pack an overnight bag. Now they're cleaned up, he has the keys. They left a note for Martha and Alexis, despite the fact they had called to relay their plans. Kate called Lanie and explained she wouldn't be back until Monday. Her best friend still had no idea about the baby, just that she and Rick were going through some stuff and spending more time together. Martha was the only one who knew. Kate still didn't have the heart to tell her dad, she's only going to wait for just a little bit longer.
They hit the road around two in the afternoon. She napped a little on the drive. Waking up too see the houses spread apart more and more. They were getting close. The couple exchanged conversation as if they had known each other a lifetime before they met. They arrived around four. He took their stuff upstairs while she explored the mansion, it was breathtaking. She silently opened the french doors going outside, a summer breeze hit her as she inhaled. The ocean, she could hear it, smell it, even taste it. Her legs moved of their own accord, outside into the vast backyard that led to a path right to the beach. It was empty, all of it, land and sea. Nobody was here, but her. He came up behind her and laced an arm around her waist, not even taking her by surprise. She could stay like this forever, in his arms, soaking up the world around her, devouring it in every sense possible.
They stood like that for a minute or so. He took her hand in his and pulled her to the beach, she lost her shoes along the way, she didn't care, not one bit. They waded in the water. It was perfect. It was them. He kissed her softly as they stood, knee deep in the cool salty sea. Distant thunder rolled, they turned and saw the dark clouds looming in on them. Despite the fact they had to leave the beach for the safety of the house, it was gorgeous. They should've checked the weather, she thought as they ran for the cover of the roof as the rain started to pour down on them. The race was lost, as they reached the porch they were drenched from head to toe. He pulled her in for slow kiss before holding her hand and dashing inside to avoid the the cold wind that had picked up speed.
They slipped out of their clothes in front of the door. He in only his boxers ran to grab towels from the closest closet, slipping on his way out. She shivered, only wearing wet bra and panties, not a minute passes when he returned with four towels. Handing one to her, she immediately wrapped herself in the huge fluffy brown towel. He dropped to the floor, scooping their soaked clothes into one and placing the other on the floor where the couple was standing and the pile of laundry was slumped.

Kate had taken an extremely hot shower that evening, Rick was downstairs making hot soup for them. She had just finished drying her hair, when he entered the en suite, leaning coolly against the door frame, he caught her gaze in the mirror and gave her a silly smile. She pulled her long hair back into a ponytail expertly and turned to face him.
"Dinner is served, Madam." He said with a thick mock French accent and bowed a little with his hand outstretched. She took his hand and curtsied.
"Thank you kind sir."
They lounged in the living room, with the fireplace burning. Their empty soup bowls and water glasses sitting on the coffee table. She was nearly asleep in his lap. He watched as her eyelids started to slowly slide shut and her breathing even out, little by little. When he thought she was deep enough asleep he moved simply out from under her and lifted her in his arms and bridal style carried her up the stairs, placing her carefully under the covers, but before leaving to go back downstairs and clean the mess from dinner, he leaned down and kissed her ever so gently, and whispered, "I love you, Kate. Always."
Little did he know that woman carrying his child was actually awake to hear his confession, and just as he was closing the door he heard in just above a whisper, he could have imagined it, "I love you too. Always."
