Hey guys so this rewrite is actually a lot different then the original and I think it gives both Austin and Ally more depth. Also it introduces things that before weren't introduced until future chapters. So I hope you guys like it.
I don't own Austin and Ally.
Summer of Love and Loss
Chapter Five: Burgers and Heavy Conversations
Austin tossed his duffle bag onto the backseat; he was tired and ready to spend the night in his own bed. One more week of working the sleepover camps and he'd be back on his regular schedule. He'd miss working with older children but was glad he'd have time to hang out with his friends and work on his music with Ally.
Starving he headed over to Ol' Guppy's for an early dinner. Guppy Jr. took his order and cocked is head in the direction of a table on the deck outside. Ally was bent over her book scribbling like crazy, her food forgotten. Grabbing his glass of lemonade and his order number Austin walked out onto the deck. As quietly as he could he sat down in the chair opposite Ally, she was too engrossed in her book to notice. He reached across the table for her book hoping this time he'd succeed in touching it.
"Don't touch my book." Ally said pulling the book away from him.
"Seriously that's what you have to say. Ally I could have been some creep and all you have to say is that." Austin said shaking his head at her. "Someone needs to get their priorities in order."
"I'm still debating on whether you're a creep or not." Ally said picking up a no doubt cold French fry. "Right now you're not doing yourself any favors."
"So you think I'm creepy, that's a first." Austin said taking a fry off of her plate.
"I'm sure people have thought worse." Ally said alluding to his reputation.
"Much worse and I guess I encourage such thoughts with my behavior." He said taking a sip of his lemonade. "What's the worst thing people have thought about you?"
Tapping her pen to her chin Ally looked thoughtfully out at the ocean. Austin figured it was because she couldn't think of anything, he was willing to bet money that no one ever thought bad about Ally Dawson.
"That I'm a slut." Of all of the things she could have said that was the last thing he expected to come out of her mouth. Anyone with eyes could see that Ally Dawson was innocent. "That after Dallas broke my heart I screwed around with anyone that gave me the time of day. I didn't do anything; I've never done anything. No one believed me though and the rumors didn't stop."
"Ally, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought it up." He said hating that she had to go through all of that.
"I brought it up by teasing you." She said.
Guppy Jr. dropped off his order and refilled Ally's cup of strawberry lemonade. Ally eyed his monstrous burger with hungry eyes, drool practically running down her chin. Laughing he pushed his plate toward her and let her take a bite. She thanked him through a full mouth and pushed his plate back to him.
"So where have you been Mr. Moon?" She asked after washing down her bite with some of her lemonade.
"Working." He said through a mouthful of burger. At her puzzled expression he swallowed and added, "I work at the aquarium and one of the sleepover camp counselors decided to take his vacation so I've been filling in for him. Its longer hours than I'm used to but the kids are older the ones in the day camps so it balances out kind of."
"How have you been sleeping over if you're with us at night?" Ally asked.
"Oh the kids only sleep over Wednesday night, the other two days they go home at five o'clock." He answered with a shrug. "Have you been to the aquarium yet?"
"Nope." Ally said popping the 'p.'
"Ally the aquarium is this place's main tourist attraction." Austin said taking a sip of his shake. "You should definitely go before you have to leave."
"Maybe I'll take Micah next week." Ally said.
"Who's Micah?"
"My stepbrother, he's nine and so much cooler to hang out with than Scarlett."
"Oh well the day camps for kids are pretty cool and the counselors rock." Austin said smugly. "So do you want to head down to the cove?"
Ally's gaze fell down to her book and she shook her head. "I don't like it there."
"Why not?" Austin asked noticing that her cheeks had tinted a light shade of pink.
"You're different there and I don't like it." She answered twisting her napkin in her hands. "You're what everybody says you are there, the town's bad boy. You drink until you're wasted and its sickening watching you dry hump a new girl every night. I only go because of Dez and Kelsey and the off chance that you might actually talk to me."
Her eyes widened to the size of saucers and she clapped her hand over her mouth. She stared at him for a second before standing up and running into the restaurant. He grabbed her book and bag before running after her leaving his half-eaten food behind.
Ally locked herself in the bathroom and dropped down to the dirty bathroom floor. She drew her knees to her chest and laid her head on her knees. Running from Austin seemed like the right thing to do, she had called him out on his behavior and was worried about his reaction. He had never been anything but kind to her but she'd never done anything like what she had just done and according to everybody Austin had a temper.
"Ally, I'm not mad at you. I've heard all of those things before. I want to hang out with you and well I've lived here my whole life so I'm pretty sure I could find places for us to go." Austin's voice said from behind the door.
"Why do you go to the cove?" She asked.
"Are you asking me to justify my behavior?" Austin asked.
"I just want to know what's so special about it."
She heard Austin sigh and imagined him dragging his hand through his hair. "It's a place where I can go and forget how shitty my life's been. I'm messed up Ally, more than you'll ever know, and at night I don't want to remember the reasons why. I don't want to feel anything, I want to be numb. The cove is where I can do that."
"I'm messed up too Austin but I don't need to get messed up to feel better." She said.
"Everybody's different Ally."
"Yeah." She said looking down at her wrist.
Hidden underneath her bracelets was a thin scar, a reminder of just how messed up she had been. She couldn't handle things after she and Dallas broke up, the rumors and the bullying finally got her one day. With the intent of ending her suffering she had slit her wrist open not expecting someone to care about her only Trish did.
"Ally."
"Austin."
"If you really don't want to we won't go back to the cove."
"I really don't want to."
"Then lets go do something fun."
"I'd like that." She said getting to her feet.
Slowly she unlocked the door and walked out of the bathroom. Austin smiled down at her and she did her best to smile back. As they walked out Guppy Jr. handed him a bag with two to-go boxes in it. Austin casually wrapped his arm around her shoulders and led her down the street to where he had parked the jeep. She stood on the sidewalk as he rummaged around the backseat for something, he tossed her a blanket, which she caught clumsily, and he had a sleeping bag, a flashlight, the food from Ol' Guppy's, and a sweatshirt in his hands when he hopped out of the jeep.
"I guess it's a good thing I haven't gone home otherwise we wouldn't have something to sit on." He said. At her arched eyebrows he added, "We're going to go sit on the beach, watch the sunset, and stargaze, if that's okay with you."
"That sounds perfect." Ally said.
Ally lay beside him pointing out various constellations and telling them how they got their names. If not hanging out with the rest of his friends drinking and making out with random girls was the price he had to pay to hang out with Ally he found that he was more than willing to pay that price. They'd known each other for two weeks and he knew that there wasn't anything he wouldn't do to make Ally happy. He cared about Ally Dawson.
"Dallas cheated on me." She said suddenly. "I went to meet him at his truck after school one day, he had gym as his last class of the day so he was always out before me, he was there practically having sex with Heather King in the backseat. It turns out that they had been hooking up for months and there I was oblivious to it all when everybody around me knew. We had our big messy public break up the next day in the cafeteria, at first he denied cheating on me, told me all kinds of crap but as our fight got bigger and louder he stopped denying it. He wasn't quiet when he told me that the reason he cheated on me was because after a year I still wasn't satisfying his needs. He stormed out of the cafeteria and I wound up having my first panic attack right there. I woke up in the hospital a couple hours later. The rumors started on my return to school. Everyone believed that I'd changed into some super slut just to prove something to Dallas. It didn't get easier and I just wanted it all to end, I thought I could make it end. I almost did but my best friend Trish cares too much about me."
Austin brought Ally into his arms and let her cry against his chest. He couldn't believe all that this wonderful girl had gone through. She wasn't messed up, she was broken and he was deadest on putting her back together. He liked Ally, at some point over the past two weeks he'd fallen for her, and after hearing her story he was afraid. Someone like him wasn't right for her but he was selfish and determined to be worthy of this girl.
He ran his hands through her hair while thinking of ways he could murder the boy that caused Ally so much pain. Without thinking he pressed his lips to her forehead, she looked at him with her tear-filled doe eyes and he smiled before doing it again.
"He was stupid and didn't deserve the years you gave him." Austin said quietly. "Don't worry Ally you're such an amazing person and one day you're going to find that guy who loves every little quirky thing about you. The guy that would rather die then hurt you."
He might even be closer than you think.
She nodded and laid her head on his chest; faintly he heard her singing a song he didn't recognize. He grabbed the red fleece blanket he had brought and draped it over their bodies.
They fell asleep right there on the beach, his arms wrapped around her and her head on his chest.
So there you guys have it. Please review it will ease my nerves about the direction I took Ally.
