Small Note
Sakura: I'm so sorry for leaving everyone with a cliffhanger and then taking off for a few weeks to get some things done. I seriously did not plan it but I at least got everything under control now so there will be no more breaks until this story is completed. So here is the long over do chapter to see what happens to King Yami...
Chapter Thirteen
Troubles
Can it get any worst?
The waiting was agonizing to the youngest ruler of vampire city. He had been in the hallway for over an hour waiting to hear the condition of his husband praying to every god out there that Yami pulled through and would be okay. After surviving two wars, one would think a little poisoning would be nothing for the elder king of the city, however when a vampire's drink is mixed with what that vampire is weak against it could be deathly. It was really no secret what the King was weak against, but in Yuugi's mind he was trying to figure out who was the one who tried to kill his husband. Yuugi was just lucky he did not try to take a drink on his way to Yami's office. Given how young he still is as a vampire the drink probably would have killed him. Some would think it was lucky for both Kings to be weak against the same thing, but they were also different ages. The younger the vampire the most likely their weakness can kill them in one hit. Older vampires can probably survive if they were introduced to their weakness many times like Yami was. The King was not completely immune to silver, but he had a high tolerance that he could get help before it killed him. All those other times it had been skin to skin contact, so Yuugi was worried how Yami would handle a fight from the inside.
Yuugi had continued his pacing not being able to sit still. Chan and Kotaro sat quietly against the wall appearing like stone statues not moving a muscle. Joey had left the three a few moments ago to check on the others once he was sure Yuugi would be okay by himself. Honestly Yuugi would never be okay if something happened to Yami. There was so much riding on Yami's survival and Yuugi feared if his mate did not make it then he probably would not be able to live on. They were mates for life and Yuugi could not picture an immortal life without Yami.
The door to the healing chambers opened causing all three outside its doors to jump at the sound. Three pair of wide eyes quickly searched out Isis and then looked at her face to give any indication what her words would give them. The woman however could not hide the small smile on her face as she approached her other King and placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Do not fear anymore Yuugi, King Yami will be fine after a few days rest." Isis informed him giving him the answer he was looking for.
Yuugi released a breath he had no idea he had been holding and let a smile grace his face. "Oh thank you Isis," He could not control what came over him as he hugged the woman. She simply accepted the hug understanding the roller coaster of emotions Yuugi was probably feeling at the moment.
"He is asleep at the moment, but would you wish to see him?"
There was no need to ask twice as Yuugi looked up at her with a nod. He released her from the hug and took Chan and Kotaro's hands as they walked into the chambers after Isis. They followed her to a private room at the back of the room near her office. Once inside she closed the door behind them to give them privacy as she moved to the other side of the bed to check on her King.
Yami lay asleep under the clean white sheets and that was when Yuugi noticed Yami looked awfully pale compared to his normal tan. Other than that he looked normal besides the bandages that were wrapped around his head under his nose covering his mouth.
"What is his condition?" Yuugi asked as he let go of his children in favor of walking up to Yami and taking one of his hands. Yami may have been asleep, but as long as Yuugi was touching him Yuugi was sure Yami knew he was there.
"He is stable, but he will be weak for a while as his body begins the healing process. Given it was silver in his drink his healing will take longer than normal." Isis explained to him, "The King did the right thing by spiting his drink back up before the silver was able to get into his system. Since you also mentioned he threw up mostly likely only a little bit of silver got into his stomach, but by throwing up he got it back out. The only damage is to his mouth where there is scaring on the inside of his mouth, tongue, and lips."
"So daddy is going to pull through?" The little voice of Chan reached up to Yuugi and Isis causing the two to look down at the little girl.
Yuugi reached down a hand and placed it on Chan's head running his fingers through her hair. "Daddy is going to be just fine after a few days." He turned back to Isis. "Any idea when the bandages can come off?"
"I will have to take them off once he wakes up to allow him to drink some blood. He lost a lot of blood while I was cleaning the wounds, which has caused his pale state. I'm not fully sure how long the healing will take given every vampire is different, but with how old Yami is it may only take two to three days for the healing to be done. He can be released from my care once he wakes up but there will need to be no talking, hints why I would like him to leave the bandages on to prevent any temptation to talking. The scaring his pretty bad and he could continue to open wounds if he talks." Isis explained in detail making sure Yuugi understand everything. She knew her King would hate to be bed ridden so she found a way to allow him to leave but also heal at the same time.
The younger ruler let another smile grace his face as he brushed a blond bang out of Yami's face. He leaned down to kiss his King's forehead. It was amazing how peaceful Yami looked and he looked like he needed the sleep. Since his lover was going to be fine, Yuugi felt a little bit better and now he could focus on finding out who tried to kill his mate. Whoever it was they were not going to get away with it. Yuugi would personal hunt them down once Yami was up and back to his normal self. However for now he would in trust his older sons with the job as he focused on Yami's healing.
Taylor hurried down the halls to the healing chambers with more urgent news that needed attending to. He was worried for his father's well-being, but after the news he just received from his lover, Yuugi needed to be informed immediately and action needed to be taken. He opened the doors to the room thankfully that it was empty except for Isis who just walked out of the room his father was most likely being kept in. He quickly went over to her making her jump because of his quick movement.
"Taylor, you scared me. What on earth are you in such a hurry for?"
"I need to talk to Yuugi," was Taylor's quick response.
"He is with your father at the moment," Isis informed him. "The King will be fine within a few days, if you wish to see them both go right on in."
Taylor let a breath of relief to hear his father was fine before he remembered his other news and moved pass Isis to enter the room. When he entered the room he found Chan curled up beside Yami's sleeping form with Yuugi sitting just behind her keeping a firm grip on one of Yami's hands. Kotaro was in a chair off to the side with his knees pulled to his chest.
Yuugi looked up when Taylor entered and offered him a small smile. "He is going to be just fine," Yuugi assured his son, but it was almost like Yuugi was still trying to reassure himself.
Taylor nodded, "That's good to hear, but Yuugi I really need to see you for a minute."
Confusion was clearly written on Yuugi's face as he looked at Taylor then to his husband then back to Taylor. He was torn between leaving the room to see what Taylor had to say or staying with his mate who was slowly recovering. "Can this wait?"
"I'm sorry Yuugi, it can't. But it will only take a few minutes." Taylor said with slight urgency he did not want to worry his younger siblings just yet about what was going on. With Yami in the process of healing, Yuugi was the sole King for the moment who would call all the final shots. Taylor and Ethan could help out when needed, but Yuugi was in charge rather he wanted to be or not.
Yuugi was reluctant at first to leave Yami, however he knew that Taylor would not pull him away unless it was completely necessary. So he offered Yami's hand up to Chan, who took it, before Yuugi left the room with Taylor. Isis was already back in her office with the door closed so they had complete privacy.
"So what is so urgent?" Yuugi asked
Taylor took a deep breath as he ran a hand through his hair. Today's events were really taking a toll on him. "Ethan, Bakura, and Marik are looking for the one responsible for poisoning dad. The council is trying to keep things under wraps to keep the public from knowing about this just yet. The palace is on lock down and no one goes in or out until there is an all clear and everyone has been questioned," He explained in one breath before moving on to his next bit of news. "While all this was happening Bakura got word from one of his messengers that some servants found dad's office had been ransacked."
The words ransacked and dad's office certainly did not belong in the same sentence. They caused Yuugi's eyes to widen in shock and no words would form in his brain to respond to that.
Taylor honestly could not blame Yuugi for being at a loss for words because he had been the same way when he had learned what had happened. So instead of waiting on an answer, he just continued where he left off. "I checked out the place with the help of Jason. We could not find anything missing except one very important item that is sure to upset dad greatly when he wakes up."
"What?" Yuugi finally choked out wanting to know what had been stolen. There was nothing of real value in Yami's office, so he was curious to know why someone took the chance tearing up his husband's office looking for it.
"The flash drive for the vampires was missing. The lock on the drawer had been picked, but who ever took it only wanted that flash drive since they left the one with the list of humans on it." Taylor finished and watched as the color drained from Yuugi's face.
The one item in Yami's whole office that could be of any value was those flash drives. They only held names, but on the vampire one it also held each weakness of each vampire in the whole city. Whoever had that flash drive now knew the weakness of all vampires and in the wrong hands that could mean nothing but disaster for the once peaceful city. After everything that had been happening, this news just confirmed all the evidence they had up until this point. Someone wanted all vampires dead…
Night had fallen over the city as Yuugi curled up on the small hospital bed with his husband who was still out of it. Ethan had come to check on Yuugi and his father before dinner with news of what was being done and to collect his younger siblings who needed to take a break from spending all day in that one room. There was no way Ethan was going to get Yuugi away from Yami's side so he did not even bother. He simply brought him some food and blood that had been thoroughly checked out.
The older vampire did not have much to report, but he did inform Yuugi of all that was being done to catch the one who tried to murder their King. The palace remained on lock down, but all workers who were done for the day and did not live in the palace were escorted off the property until tomorrow morning. Bakura and Marik along with their most trusted officers questioned as many of the palace staff as possible in one day, but there were a lot of people to go through. However Ethan had even went ahead and shut down all the portals to make sure no humans could leave the city until the King was back on his feet and could call the shots. They could not take the chance of the one who tried to kill the King getting out of the city without being put on trial for his or her crimes.
Bakura and Marik had also looked over video of the kitchen to see all who had touched the King's glass before it had made it to Yuugi. There were only two other people besides Yuugi who touched the glass, but there was no video of either person being showed pouring anything into the drink. The only way someone may have slipped it in, that the two could think of and not be seen on camera, was that someone brought the glass into the palace and slipped it in already laced with silver.
The final bit of news Ethan had was not that much better which was about the break in of Yami's office. Given it was Yami's private office in which no one else besides the royal family were supposed to be in, Yami never put in cameras to monitor the place. So there was no way to know who it was unless any evidence was found such as fingerprints.
The day had been long and tiring so before he left with his siblings for dinner, Ethan promised Yuugi the investigation would continue bright and early in the morning. Even through Ethan, Taylor, and Jason were all glad to hear their father was going to be alright, they were more focused on catching the person responsible before they got away with it. Raven was caught in the middle of it all unsure what to do since she was still new to the family, but offered her support in any way she could.
Once his children had left the room, Yuugi had simply drank the blood that Ethan had bought him to help him feel better, before he got comfortable beside his husband and tried to get some sleep. The sun had long since set and Isis had retired to her own room in the palace leaving three guards to the main door of the healing chambers to make sure both the Kings would be safe.
Time seemed to tick by slowly as Yuugi held his husband's hand and stared at the wedding band on his ring finger. It was about the only piece of jewelry Yami wore and that was only because he loved what it symbolized. Thoughts of what he almost lost kept drifting into Yuugi's mind keeping him awake with worry that something would change in Yami's condition. The last thing Yuugi wanted to do was go to sleep and wake up only to realize his husband had died in the middle of the night.
"Please wake up soon…" Yuugi whispered as he rested his head just below Yami's chin. He closed his eyes to see if sleep would finally come to him.
There was a moment when all was quiet and then there was a faint sound of a moan. Yuugi reopened his eyes and looked around the room not seeing anyone around. At first he thought he had just imagined it until he heard it again and instead turned to look at his husband. Crimson eyes slowly blinked open with sleep still evident in them.
"Yami…" Yuugi gently said putting a hand on Yami's cheek. Those crimson eyes turned to look at him and stared for the longest time as if trying to figure out if this was real or a dream. Yuugi felt like crying all over again, but this time with tears of joy.
As quickly as they had opened they slowly fell back closed as if the King could not keep them open for long. His breathe had even out as sleep took over once again. However that one look was good enough for Yuugi as the younger vampire kissed Yami's forehead with a smile.
"I love you…" Yuugi told him even if Yami could not hear him. He laid his head back down and closed his eyes. Finally a small weight of worry had been lifted from Yuugi and he was able to get some sleep that night.
When dawn broke over the city, amethyst eyes opened used to getting up at early hours because of his husband. He blinked his eyes slowly wondering why Yami had not awaken him yet, but when he felt fingers running through his hair did he look up and realize why he had awaken in the first place. Dull crimson eyes were wide awake as they looked down at Yuugi. If there were no bandages over his mouth, Yuugi was sure Yami would have been smiling down at him.
"Hey…" Yuugi said with a smile of his own as he lean up and kissed Yami's cheek. "I'm glad to see you awake. How are you feeling?"
Yami brought his hands back to him as he started to sign in sign language. 'Sore, but better than yesterday…'
Yuugi nodded as he sat up, "Isis said you'll have to leave the bandages on until you are fully healed. The only time you are allowed to take them off is to drink blood."
'Okay, where are the children?' Yami signed next.
"They retired for the night to their rooms after dinner. Ethan and Taylor have been a big help, but yesterday was stressful for all of us." Yuugi informed him, "Chan and Kotaro will probably skip breakfast to come see if you are awake."
Yami nodded before he looked to the doors when they opened to reveal a fully awake Isis. She looked surprised to see her King awake this early as her eyes widen a little.
"Oh my King, it's good to see you are awake."
Yami started to sign something but to Yuugi, 'Thank her for everything she has done for me. I thought I was a goner there for a while…'
Yuugi was confused on why Yami wanted him to tell her before he turned and saw her looking at him with confusion written on her face. "What did he say?" She asked.
"He wanted me to thank you for all you have done. He thought he was a goner there for a while," Yuugi relayed, before he asked, "Do you not understand sign language?"
Isis shook her head as she made her way over to the bed. "No, our King self-taught himself many languages as I'm sure you know so he could communicate with anyone who came into the city, including those who were mute or deaf. I'm surprised to know you know sign language."
Yuugi shrugged like it was nothing, "I learned when my grandfather was going deaf. He was already hard of hearing when I went to live with him so I learned at a young age. I'm a little rusty in signing to people, but I can read what it being signed no problem. I'm glad I learned in this case since it will be a while before Yami can talk again."
"That is a good talent to have," Isis let him know as she checked Yami over for signs of his condition getting worst. "My King you are looking better this morning. Now that you are awake I'm going to fetch you some blood so we can get some color back to your skin."
Once she was gone from the room again, Yuugi looked down at Yami and could not help the tears that finally came back to his eyes. He lay back down and buried his face into Yami's chest as he sobbed. It was such a relief that Yami was going to pull through and it was even better now that he was fully awake. Yami was going to be furious because of what had happened to himself and to his office, but for now Yuugi kept quiet about that as he kept himself as close to Yami as physically possible. Yami simply wrapped his arms around Yuugi and hugged him back, happy to be alive after his ordeal.
Sakura: I kept this chapter simple for two reasons, one I just wanted to show Yami was not dead and then there is the next chapter where something else will happen that I will not say anything more about. You will just have to wait to read and find out.
Yumi: Review!
