Small Note
Sakura: I don't know why I had fun writing this chapter (could be because I like crime shows ^_^) and I'm not sure how much my readers will like it. The plot continues to thicken so lets see how the city can handle what I have planned next...
Chapter Fourteen
Chaos
A city forced to live in fear
The King's mate was finally able to get some normalize back in his life, once his husband was up and walking around the palace doing his job as a King once more. This however did not happen quickly as it took three days for Yami to regain his strength and another four days before Isis was able to take the bandages off for good. If anything Yami was glad to finally be able to eat when and what he wanted, the strict diet both Isis and Yuugi had on him of only blood made him feel sick when his body had regained his strength. The week had been long and tiring, but it was over with and both the Kings were glad.
Sadly just because things were normal with the King again did not mean everything was all good in the palace. The palace was still under heavy lockdown and those who worked in the palace were under watch. Everything the royal family ate was first tasted and checked over by two of the mains chefs in kitchen that only Yami trusted. No one was allowed in the kitchen unless they worked in there. Guards were posted everywhere mostly at every entrance to the palace. Anyone who did not work in the palace was escorted around by a guard and was not allowed to wander around.
Under Yami's orders, Chan and Kotaro were to be with one of their siblings or their parents at all times. They may be vampires and older than they looked, but the King was not taking any chance that someone would come after them because they looked younger than they were. The King of the city had been furious when he found out someone had broken into his office and stolen the flash drive with the list of every vampire that lived in the city. This was why he was taken all these extra precautions to keep his family safe. Someone out there in the city had the names and weaknesses of every vampire in the city and with that knowledge there was sure to be trouble.
When Yami had finally returned to his office a week after recovery he couldn't stand the site of it. The place had been cleaned up, but nothing was in its proper place anymore and it just unnerved him that someone had touched his things. He was just grateful that no one else besides himself was hurt. It did not take a genius to figure out the reason he had been poison was to keep everyones attention on the condition of their King. This gave the thief plenty of time to ransack the place and find what they were looking for.
Yuugi watched his husband as he entered the room with a frown set on his face. He scanned the room as if searching for something, but then Yami just sighed and made his way over to his desk. Thankfully the mess he made of throwing up had been cleaned with great care and Yami had a feeling the carpet under his feet was brand new. The King sat in his chair and let out a sigh.
"Yuugi, I don't know what to do anymore…"
Yuugi approached his partner and placed an arm around his husband. "I know, but we will catch whoever is responsible. They almost took you away from me, the kids, and this city. There is no way they will get away with this."
"The problem is we still don't have any leads on who murdered those other vampires. How in the world will Bakura and Marik find evidence on who tried to murder me and took the flash drive." Yami stated even though he knew Yuugi was only trying to cheer him up. A slight depression had taken over the King during his bed rest and he just felt so helpless. The last time he had felt that way was back in Ancient Egypt when he was almost on death's doorstep after the hunters nearly killed him and the race of vampires.
Yuugi smiled despite his husband's distrust in his council and kissed Yami's head. "I have faith in Bakura and Marik. Besides remember the day you were taken off of bed rest and they came and told us that they found fingerprints in this office that belonged to a palace worker. I'm sure in no time we will have word that they have found the guy and all will be right with the city."
"It won't be completely until we solve those murders. The families keep calling wanting to know when the killer will be bought to trial and they seemed to be losing faith in the system. If this guy is only responsible for trying to murder me, then I don't know what to tell the city." Yami folded his arms and place them on his desk, before placing his head on top of them.
Yuugi was going to say something else until there was a knock on the office door. He left Yami's side for the moment to answer the door and was surprised to find a tired looking Bakura and Marik standing outside. The younger King wasted no time letting them in. "Do you have new information?" Yuugi asked in hope.
Bakura nodded as he approached Yami's desk and pass the King a file once he lift his head up to address them. "The fingerprints we found in the office did belong to a palace worker who also worked in the kitchens the day of the poisoning. After running the prints we tried to contact and find this worker, however for the last week he has not shown up for work and his neighbors have not seen him for days."
"We did find at his house plans in great detail about when and how to poison you, plus notes about where you might keep the flash drive with information about the vampires." Marik went on to explain as Yami opened the file and started to look it over. "There were no other plans about the other murders, so either he did not commit them or he was extra careful."
Yuugi walked back around the desk and joined his husband in looking over the file. "So I take it you have not found this guy yet?" He questioned and when he looked up he could tell by their faces that the news they were not telling their Kings was bad news.
"Actually we do have news on the suspect, but it's not the news you will like," Bakura looked uneasy which rarely happened, but he continued anyway not willing to hide anything from Yami. "It was yesterday after noon the neighbors around the suspect's house called saying there was a weird smell coming from the house. Marik and I went to check it out and found something rather disturbing."
Marik motioned for Yami to turn the page on the file and when Yami did, Yuugi wished he had looked away. The picture was small, but it was still there on the page along with a report of medical findings. The picture was of a decaying corpse lying on a steel table. Underneath the picture was a full report of what killed the person along with who the person was.
"Our suspect was shot in the head and buried under the floorboards of his living room. A neighbor said that a van had come by one afternoon last week late at night, but did not think anything of it since the suspect did not drive a van. They thought it was just a friend coming to see if anyone was home yet. The medical examiner said based on the decaying of the body it had to have been five to six days ago when he was buried." Marik confirmed what was written on the report.
Somewhere in Yuugi's mind he couldn't feel sorry for the guy, because if what Bakura and Marik said were true he had planned to murder the King and Yuugi could never forgive the guy for that. He would have been placed to death anyway for his crimes and it seems someone got to him first and saved them the trouble. "Either someone knew what he had done and saved us the trouble by taking him out or he was not working alone and his partner took him out." Yuugi said out loud wishing he knew which could be true.
It seemed Bakura had the answer to that too as he told Yami to turn to the last page of the file. When the King did, Yami found a large picture of what appeared to be a letter. "That letter was left with the body and based on what it says we knew you needed to see this as soon as you could."
Yami read over the letter and his eyes widened at what was on the page.
This city was a mistake and all the vampires will pay for their crimes against the humans. We have the names and weaknesses of every vampire in this city, so there is no stopping us no matter how hard you try. Vampire City will fall…
The gasp beside him let Yami know Yuugi had also read the letter. He turned to see the look of horror on Yuugi's face, but also the worry in his eyes of what was to come. The King looked away and sighed, "According to the file this worker was human correct?"
"Yes he was, but at one point he did have a vampire girlfriend and they were supposed to get married according to the neighbors. We heard that his girlfriend was killed in the rebellion we had and that this guy had been closed off from everyone ever since. We confirmed this with the files of dead vampires and she did die during that small battle fighting on our side." Bakura added trying to figure out what Yami seemed to know.
The King only closed the file and passed it back across the desk toward Bakura. "Based on all this I know for a fact all those murders and the attempt on my own life are linked. Someone was trying to get that flash drive to learn all they could about how to kill the vampires who live in this city. This guy who poisoned me was simply a pawn used because of the grief he was going through from losing a loved one. The people behind all of this are a much more dangerous group than has been let on."
"Who is doing this?" Yuugi asked feeling like he was missing something.
Yami crossed his arms and looked up at Bakura and Marik. "It would seem the Hunters are back."
At those words the room seemed to grow colder and even Bakura and Marik looked afraid for their lives. Yuugi knew who Yami was taking about after learning about his husband's past and these Hunters were no one to mess with if you are a vampire. The younger King feared what was going to happen to the city if there really were Hunters among them. The main question that was plaguing Yuugi's mind was why they were there in the first place and causing trouble. The vampires had done nothing to bring on the wrath of all of this.
"The city is no longer safe is it?" Yuugi asked as he looked down at his partner.
Yami shook his head and grabbed Yuugi's hand. "No it is not and I have a feeling things are only going to get worst from here." Those words held all the truth that no one wanted to believe.
Two days was all it took for something else to happen and once again no one saw it coming. The King and his mate were asleep in their bed when the sound of an explosion shook the city. The ground shook beneath the city's feet causing screams of panic in the downtown area where vampires had been roaming the night enjoying the evening as humans were still under curfew because of a killer on the loose. The only thing not mentioned is that Yami was trying to protect the vampires and by keeping the humans under a night curfew could help police catch the killer.
Yuugi sat up in bed once the ground stopped shaking and looked at his husband. "What the hell was that?" He asked as he got out of bed and headed toward the window. He pulled the curtains covering the balcony doors aside and that is when he saw it. There were bright red and orange flames flying high in four different areas of the vampire district.
The door to their room was thrown open by two certain children. They ran over to bed and jumped up beside their daddy clinging to him scared by the sound they heard outside. "Daddy!"
Yami sat up and held Chan and Kotaro close as he looked toward Yuugi. "What did you see?"
"It looks like bombs went off in the vampire district seeing as that part of the city is in flames and because of the sound we heard." Yuugi guessed as he approached Yami and gently took the children into his arms. "You should go see what is going on. I'll take care of these two."
Yami nodded as he quickly got dressed and left the room to take care of whatever was happening. Yuugi stay where he was with the two younger children and let them cling to him. The younger King was just as scared as them and he would do anything to have Yami back by his side, but he was the main King of the city and was bound to go off and deal with things like this. The only thing Yuugi could do was try to calm his children while also praying that Yami would be alright.
It did not take Yami long to reach the entrance to the vampire district where police were already evacuating the citizens from the fires. The people were in a panic no matter how much the police tried to calm them down and Yami could not blame them. He quickly ordered Mahado and Isis to help guide his people back to the palace where they would be safe while giving orders to the rest of his council who had also been awoken by the explosion and followed him there. His older children stood waiting on orders to be given, but if anything Yami wanted them by his side at all times. There was no telling what was being planned and for all Yami knew this explosion was just to draw the royal family out of the palace to finish them off.
The thoughts entering Yami's mind quickly turned sour as he thought of Yuugi still at the palace without him. Yami turned toward Jason and Raven with a new plan in his head. "The others will follow me, I want you two to go back to the palace and stay with Yuugi."
Jason did not have to be told twice as he took Raven's hand and ran back to the palace with her. He knew his father would worry leaving Yuugi alone with just palace guards to guard him through all this chaos. At a time like this it was best not to question what his father was thinking.
Once they were gone, Yami turned to his most trusted guards who had also followed him out there that night. All three were awaiting orders and Yami was glad they were there with him that night. "Timaeus follow Jason and Raven back to the palace. It would make me feel better if you stay with them for the night until things are back under control."
Timaeus saluted Yami before he took off after the two. This left Hermos and Critias to follow their King and the rest of the children closely as they entered the chaos that was the vampire district. Each of the explosions sights were being contained as best the firefighters could keep it until they could put them out. A good amount of houses had been wiped out with the blast and there was no way to know the total of deaths that may have taken place.
Yami sent Hermos and his older sons Ethan and Taylor to one part of the city to get a report while he and Critias went to another part. However before Yami could get far into seeing the damage he was stopped by a policemen. The fact that this policeman was obviously a human concerned Yami. He had not given a curfew to the humans who were police, firefighters, or medical. Yami simply told Bakura and Marik to keep a better eye on them.
"State your business quickly, you should know humans are not allowed in this district," Yami ordered the officer who shrank back in fear even though he was taller and bigger than Yami.
"I'm sorry sir, but my partner said this could not wait and to find you as soon as I could. We found a human hanging out in some bushes near this district with a video camera. I offered to stay with the human, but my partner who is a vampire thought it would be better if he stayed with him." The policeman told him.
Yami nodded, "Lead the way…" He said as he and Critias followed the policeman back out of the district and toward a police car off to the side that was parked away from the chaos. As they got closer Yami noticed the back door to the car was open but no one was inside and also the other officer was nowhere to be found.
"Sir…" Critias said as he tapped Yami's shoulder, before pointed to back of the car where feet could be seen on the other side of the car. The two walked around carefully and were shocked to find the office on the ground with a dagger sticking out of his chest where his heart would be.
The human officer walked around the car at that point. "Oh good lord…" He gasped as he dropped to his knees beside the victim and it wouldn't be the first time Yami saw a grown man break down.
Yami sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. "Critias get another officer over here to guard the scene until it can be closed off…" He paused in giving orders to Critias as he noticed something just under the car. The King kneeled down and picked up whatever it was and was surprise to find the video camera.
Right then and there Yami opened the little side screen and hit the on switch. The screen lit up and showed Yami's feet since he had the camera pointed down. The ruler of the city was not that good with technology, but from his children and Yuugi he had learned to work a video camera. He pressed another button to view what was recently filmed. The screen went blank for a minute before a person in a ski mask appeared on the screen.
"Tonight things are going to rock…" The person said in a whisper, before the camera was turned toward the vampire district. There was the sound of a phone being dialed, before one by one four bombs went off lighting the district up and sending the vampires into chaos. The camera continued to roll showing all the destruction and panic the bombs had caused up until the two officers had found the guy. Even then the camera continued to roll as the dead officer put the camera on top of the car as his human partner put cuffs on the human and put him in the back. Orders were given and the human officer ran off leaving the victim and the human in silence. Then right before Yami's eyes another individual walked up behind the officer and tapped him on the shoulder. His face was fully revealed as if he wanted people to see what he had done as he plunge the dragger into the officer's heart when he turned around. The two individuals then made their escape with no one around to watch. The officer stumbled back hitting the car causing the camera to fall off the car and onto the ground cutting off the video as the officer died.
Yami shut the camera with a growl. "Critias get this area roped off and then when available we need an ambulance to come get the body." He turned to his guard with a serious face to let him know he meant business. "I can take care of myself, so do not follow me."
Critias could not get another word out as Yami ran off quickly making sure Critias could not follow him. As much as the guard hated to see him go, his King had given him orders and he had to follow them. So he left the crying officer to go get a few more officers to rope off the scene until a crime unit could go over it. Unknowing to Critias the crying officer looked up as he left with a smirk on his face, before hurrying away from the scene.
Sakura: Well that is the end of that chapter, things are really heating up in Vampire City and there is no telling when all this madness will end, well I know when it will since I'm the authoress, but I can't give anything away!
