Chapter Nine

Elphaba pinned the blonde haired girl on the ground. She had no idea who this woman was, but she did not appreciate being attacked in her home. She felt a strange coldness in her hand when she touched her opponent's hand. Her grip loosened slightly. It was not much, but it was enough for the girl to roll over and pin her on the ground.

The green witch let out a sigh. This was ridiculous. This girl was much shorter and weighed more, Elphaba knew she could easily make the girl stop, but there was a nagging voice in her head that kept telling her not too.

"FAE!" She grinned when she heard her husband's voice.

Fiyero dropped the basket of blueberries he had gathered earlier that day. He grabbed the blonde girl and pulled her off his wife.

"Let me go! I almost had her!" She yelled angrily as she tried to get out of the man's grasp. Her entire body began to shake. She felt cold again.

Elphaba's eyes widened when she heard what the blonde said. She remembered having a fight with Glinda and she had said the same thing! The more she looked at the girl; the more she could see the resemblance between this blonde and her friend.

"I said let me GO!" Daphne screamed.

Suddenly, ice shot out of her hands. The man's feet and the green witch's feet were frozen in place.

Daphne ran out of the room quickly. Snow and ice followed her. Her body began to shake again. She felt like she was freezing! There had to be a place where she could keep warm.

Elphaba closed her eyes as she shot fire out of her hands on the ice. The ice immediately melted from the heat. She quickly went over to Fiyero and melted the ice at his feet.

Once he was free, he started to search for the blonde girl. He paused when he noticed his wife was not following him. He was about to say her name but he stopped. A dazed, trance like look was her face. He recognized the look. She was having a vision of the future.

"No, no, no," she whispered as tears filled her eyes.

"Fae, what wrong?" He asked.

."I-i-it's-" she began to say.

"DAVID!" The despairing yell interrupted the green skinned woman. Elphaba and Fiyero glance at each other wide-eyed. Elphaba had a worried look on her face.

It wasn't possible? Was it? She thought. She went to her crystal ball and put her hands on it. She closed her eyes as she began to concentrate. She had to find this girl!

A few minutes later, an image of Daphne appeared in the ball. The young woman was in the master bedroom shaking. She was looking at something in her hands. Tears were streaming down her face. Snow was all over the room.

Elphaba's eyes narrowed when she saw snow and ice coming from the girl's hands. A curse must have been placed on her. That was the only explanation for what the girl was doing.

"Fae, what are you doing?" Fiyero asked when he saw her move her hands.

She ignored him. "I need you to stand outside our bedroom door and pick the girl up. Wait ten minutes when you get to the door then enter. Be sure to hold your breath."

He nodded and left. He understood what she was doing. He almost wished he was a scarecrow again so he could resist the spell better, but he knew he would be fine.

When he left, Elphaba began to cast her spell. She grinned as she felt her magic working. She continued to look into the crystal ball.

Daphne continued to shake. She was so cold. She wished she could get warm, but nothing was working. She had tried every spell she knew that would make her warm but nothing was working. It was like her magic was cut off. The only thing she seemed to be able to do was create ice and snow.

Suddenly grass began to grow out of the snow. Beautiful, red flowers started to grow. They were poppies.

Daphne watched in fascination as more flowers grow. Am I doing this? She wondered.

A soft, gentle fragrance entered her nose. She closed her eyes as she smelt the flowers. They smelt so good. It was almost …soothing.

Her eyes widened. She recognized what was going on. Her mom used to put a sleeping spell on her when she had a nightmare and would use poppies! She started to look for a way to get out. She had to get to David!

She started to run to the window, but it was far away from her. She could feel the sleeping spell working. Her eyes were starting to become heavy. She blinked and shook her head. Every step she took felt difficult. She wanted to give into the spell so badly, but she knew she could not.

Darkness started to cloud her vision. She could barely keep her eyes opened. She started to fall in the flowers. "I am so sorry, David," she whispered. Those were the last words she said before she lost complete consciousness and went to sleep.
