Lita couldn't believe what she just heard. Once the first statement left Adam's mouth, she knew she had to hear the rest. She wanted to know what happened. She needed to know the truth. Just that one statement from him was too much for her to handle, but she needed more. She finally sat down on the edge of his bed before he continued and went into details of what happened years ago. She was still trying to register everything that he told her after the fact and wasn't able to say anything as of yet.
Adam, who was still standing during the whole story, walked over towards her and placed his hand on her shoulder, but she shrugged it away. "Don't touch me," she said shaking her head, looking down at her hands in her lap and not at him. "Just please don't come near me right now. Just stay away."
He backed away from her a bit. "I'm sorry. I'm really and truly sorry for-"
"Stop," she interrupted him still avoiding eye contact. "Just stop talking. You already said what you needed to, so stop talking now."
He said nothing and sat on the other end of the bed as he patiently waited for her to say something, just anything at all regarding what he just told her. Her not saying anything concerning his revelation kind of scared him. She could be pretty unpredictable so he didn't know what she was going to do or say. He had a feeling he wasn't going to like it.
"I used to think of you as the one person who would never ever hurt me," she said finally breaking her silence, continuing after she wiped away her tears and was finally able to look up at him. He didn't realize until now that she was crying even though he had his suspicions. "But you did. You hurt me so bad even if you didn't mean to. Even if you were actually thinking about me and my safety when you made your decision and left. But..." She trailed off and took a brief pause before she continued. "But I can never stop thinking about how you left without saying a word. You could have told me. I can never stop thinking about how I woke up alone after you were sleeping right next to me the night before. I can never stop thinking about how alone I was when I found out I was pregnant, during the pregnancy, and after Ethan was born. Yes, I had Dawn, Christian, and my mom but that didn't matter to me because I needed you. You were the one I needed the most, not them."
He nodded. "I know, but I didn't have a choice-"
"Yes you did!" She shouted as she stood up with him following suit. He was afraid she was going to blow up and that's exactly what she was doing. "You had a choice! You had a choice and you made the wrong one by not saying anything to me at all!"
He began to walk closer to her only for her to move. "Don't. Just don't come near me right now."
"Okay. Look, I didn't want anything to happen to you. I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if something happened to you because of me. I wanted to protect you."
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath before she opened them up again. She spoke as calmly as she could this time because she was getting sick and tired of all the yelling that happened before his confession and now. "I get that. I understand it. But that doesn't change how I feel about what happened. You telling me the truth doesn't change what happened over the past few years. It doesn't take away the hurt and pain I went through. It doesn't mean I can forget everything that happened. And I know that might sound selfish, but I don't care."
"I'm sorry for what you went through. I'm sorry for not being there for you when you needed it, but... but I'm not sorry for doing what I thought was best in trying to protect you."
"You didn't need to because nothing happened."
"But it could have."
"But it didn't." He was about to say something, but that's when she thought of something else. "What happened to those guys? How are you even back?"
It took him a while, but he answered her. "They finally got caught and now they're rotting in prison. They um... they actually got caught after um... after they murdered the real guy who owed them the money."
"Oh my God," she gasped in shock. "When was this?"
He hesitated once again because he felt like she might be upset at his answer. "Over two years ago."
"What? Two years ago? Why did... How...I mean I don't understand. Why are you back now if you didn't come back then when you could have?"
"I wanted to see you. I wanted to see if you were okay. I just... I couldn't come back back then because I didn't know how to. I didn't know how I would be able to face you again. I knew you would shun me out and I didn't want that."
"Then why are you here now?"
"Because I couldn't stay away any longer."
She looked away and said nothing for a while because she didn't really know what to say at the moment. "You were right."
He was confused. "About what?"
"About me. About you. About how I feel about you," she answered finally looking back up at him. "I... I... I do love you. I still love you. I never stopped." That's what he wanted to hear, but why didn't it feel like it? "I tried to stop. I tried to hate you, but it wasn't possible. I tried to point out everything that was wrong with you, but I couldn't really come up with anything that I didn't love at the same time. You know other than the obvious... you leaving." She let out a small laugh before she continued. "Since I couldn't think of anything, I tried to convince myself that our height difference was a problem. I tired to convince my self you had pointy ears, but you don't. You get the point."
"I wanted so badly to hate you, but I couldn't and I still can't. But... But that doesn't mean I can forgive and forget. And I don't... I don't think I can trust you. I didn't have to tell you anything about my tumor, but I did. You didn't tell me anything at all when you should have told me because it did effect me. My tumor had no effect on you whatsoever and I still told you what was going on with me. You didn't tell me about your troubles and you should have because I should have been there for you too." She shook her head. "But you didn't give me the chance."
"I had my reasons." He wasn't about to repeat his reasons again though because he knew she was probably getting sick of hearing it. "I don't... This isn't how I imagined... well, us. It's not h-" Unfortunately for him, he was interrupted by a very angry redhead before he could continue.
"Well guess what?! You did this! You did this to yourself! You did this to me! You did this to us! This is your fault! You..." she trailed off, her voice cracked throughout the speech and she just couldn't talk anymore since she was on the verge of breaking down.
"You're a really good friend. You have been with me ever since I found out about the tumor. You went with me to the doctors. You stayed with me at the hospital for hours. And you didn't have to do any of that but you still did. But the thing is, all I ever see you as is a friend and nothing else. And that's all you'll ever be. A friend. Nothing more. Not ever." She shook her head. "Because I can't... I can't do that."
She couldn't help herself and started to cry freely as she looked down on the ground. She didn't want for him to see her cry even if she knew he knew that's what she was doing given the fact that her shoulders were shaking uncontrollably. He walked over to her so he could comfort her even though he knew he would be pushed away, but that didn't matter to him. She didn't notice him near her until she felt him touch him. She said nothing as she moved a little away from him. That still didn't stop him as he took her in for a hug and even though she was still reluctant, she finally gave in, burying her head in his chest, tears still pouring down her face.
"I'm sorry," he began to say while he held her closely, stroking her hair. "I'm so sorry."
They stayed that way for a little while longer until she was finally able to calm down a little. They pulled back away from one another. She was about to wipe away the tears, but he beat her to it and brushed away her tears. Then she did something that surprised them both: she kissed him.
Lita was utterly confused about what happened only half an hour earlier. Adam told her the whole truth and that was definitely not something she was expecting. Like she told him, it didn't matter to her why he left because it didn't change anything that happened back then and it wasn't going to change anything between the two now. She was still in love with him but she just didn't see the two getting back together.
But the most confusing part of it all was when she kissed him. She didn't know why she did it, but she did and he didn't stop it and it kind of got out of control: they slept together. That was why she called Dawn and asked her if she could drop Ethan off instead of Adam picking up the little boy so she could talk to her about something. She just needed someone to talk to even though she knew she wasn't going to like anything the brunette was going to say.
"Okay, first, you're making me dizzy so can you please sit down or something?" Dawn asked as she looked at the other woman who was currently pacing back and forth. "I don't mean to rush you, but I do kind of have to get back home. So what's up? What did you want to talk about?"
The redhead sighed, taking a seat next to the brunette on the bed in her room. Well Adam's room. Her room in his house. "Adam."
Dawn waited for her to continue, but she didn't. "Okay. What about him?"
"He told me why he left years ago."
"Oh. Okay. That's good, right? What did you say?"
"I told him how much he hurt me and how I can't forget about that no matter what. I know he said he was thinking about me when he made his decision, but it doesn't change anything. I... I told him I'm still in love with him-"
"I knew it."
"-no matter what. Then I told him that I only seeing us being friends and nothing else because I cannot do that again. I just... I feel like I'm only going to be setting myself up for a world of hurt again. And I... I can't do that again."
"Lili, I don't think he's going to hurt you again because he loves you. And I don't mean that he didn't love you back then, but as much as I hated him doing it, I thought his reasons for leaving were actually kind of justifiable. He did the only thing he could and yea, he was fine and safe and you probably would have been to had he told you and you went with him. But the only thing he thought was about you being safe and him not wanting to die so he wasn't really thinking much at that time."
Lita nodded. "I know but I... I don't know." It was quiet for a while before she spoke up again. "But there's more, that's not all the happened." Dawn gestured for him to continue, so she did. "Um... he hugged me because I started crying. And then... I kind of kissed him and he might have kissed me back and um... it might have gone further than that. A lot further."
"You mean you two hooked up?"
Lita nervously started to bit her nails and nodded her head. "Mhm." To say Dawn was surprised would be an understatement. And then she said something to shock her even more. "Twice."
Dawn widened her eyes in shock. "Oh my God. You little whore."
Lita sighed, shaking her head. "Dawn no. Please let's not start that again."
"Okay, but can I just say one thing?" She didn't wait for Lita to say anything before she continued. "How cool would it be if you found out you're pregnant and then we could be pregnant together and have our second kids together and- Ow." She rubbed at the spot on her shoulder where a scowling Lita punched her.
"Shut up. Do not say that. That cannot happen. That wasn't supposed to happen. And it happened twice and it wasn't even supposed to happen once." She was on the verge of freaking out and Dawn knew it.
"Okay, try to calm down. It'll be okay."
"No it won't. I don't know how I let that happen. Now things are going to be even more weird than usual. That's why I'm leaving tomorrow. I can't stay here any longer. I don't want to. I don't need to anymore. I'm okay now, I don't need his help."
"So you're just going to run away from him?"
"No. It's not called running away. It's called making some space because we definitely need some of that."
Dawn rolled her eyes. "No. It's the same thing."
"No it's not."
"Yes it is."
"No it's not."
"Yes it is."
"No."
"Yes."
"No. Just shut up."
Dawn got up from the bed. "You're still in love with him and you still have feelings for him. I know you said you don't want to get hurt again but I really don't think he's going to do that. You can't just run away from him. You have to talk to him."
"No I don't and I'm not going to because there's nothing to talk about."
Dawn sighed. She knew she wasn't going to get through that thick skull of Lita's anytime soon. "You're really stubborn. I have to go. Just think about what I said. Don't hesitate to call or come by if you need anything. Bye." With that said, Dawn left.
It was only a matter of seconds before Ethan entered the room and joined his mother on the bed.
"Hey sweetie." Lita smiled at him. "Are you ready for bed?" He nodded. "Okay. I want to tell you something first."
"Okay. What is it mommy?"
"I'm going home tomorrow, but you can stay with daddy a little while longer if you want."
"Why?" He asked before she could say something else.
"I'm better now and I don't need daddy's help anymore."
"But I want to stay here with you and daddy."
"Sweetie, I told you we were only going to stay here until I got better and now I'm better."
"But why do we have to leave? Why can't we stay with daddy?"
"Because this isn't where we live." She continued before he could take this conversation any further. "It's getting past your bedtime and you have school tomorrow."
"Can I sleep with you today?"
She nodded. "Yes."
Adam looked over at the clock in his room and saw it was only one in the morning. Only three minutes had gone by since the last time he checked the time. Time was going so slow and he couldn't fall asleep. He couldn't stop thinking about what happened earlier between him and Lita. She finally told him she loved him and that was what he wanted to hear, but what she said after that was something he could live without hearing. He didn't want to be just friends with her, he didn't think he could.
And then there was that whole sleeping together thing. Right after the first time, she told him that couldn't happen again and they should just pretend it didn't even happen in the first place. He got angry at her saying it was like she wanted to pretend they never happened at all which she responded with saying that would probably be a good idea but there was a little problem with that. They became engaged in a heated argument which led to them repeating their earlier actions. Only this time, Lita said nothing and ran out of his room and ended up locking herself in the other room. They were able to avoid one another for the rest of the night.
He sighed and looked at the clock once again and only one minute passed by this time. He groaned in frustration. He needed to do something to get his mind off a certain someone so he could finally get some sleep.
He got up from his bed and walked down stairs. He was just going to watch some late night television until he fell asleep. That was boring enough and could hopefully get him tired to make him fall asleep.
He got to the living room and was just about to sit down on the couch and turn the tv on, but he saw a light coming from the kitchen so he went to go turn it off. He immediately bumped into Lita once he entered the kitchen since he wasn't really paying much attention to where he was walking.
That was followed by a loud crashing sound and a string of cuss words from Lita. He looked down on the floor and saw broken glass on the floor. It seemed like she had a glass in her hand and dropped it on the ground when they bumped into one another and she accidentally stepped on in.
"I'm sorry. Okay, you should sit down." He led her over to one of the chairs in the room and sat her down. "You're bleeding," he said while he examined her foot. "The glass is sticking out. Don't worry, I'll get it out for you. Let me go get the first aid kit first." He came back within a couple of minutes and started to work on her foot.
"Ow!" She exclaimed which was followed by another string of cuss words. "It hurts."
"I know," he said while working on her foot, trying to stop the bleeding. "This is going to sting a little-"
"Ow, son of a-"
"Sorry." He finished cleaning the cut and covered it with a band-aid. "All done." He let go of her foot and stood up.
"Thanks." She was avoiding eye contact and he knew it. "I'll clean the mess. I did break the glass so-"
"No," he interrupted her, "just go back to bed. I'll clean up the glass and water. I'm the one who wasn't looking where I was going and bumped into you in the first place."
"Okay," she easily gave in because she didn't want to stay alone in a room with him any longer. She got up so she could go back upstairs. He looked like he was going to help her, but she didn't need nor want it. "Don't touch me. I can go myself."
He said nothing as he watched her walk off before he started to clean up the broken glass. It looked like the whole awkwardness was going to heighten up even more than usual due to their extracurricular activities earlier. Yup, sleep definitely wasn't coming tonight especially not after that. For either of them.
Thanks for reading. Thanks for the reviews. Glad you liked the last chapter. Hope you liked this one as well.
