Adam entered the kitchen the next morning after he got ready for work. He was met by the sight of Lita making and giving Ethan his breakfast. Neither of them noticed his presence until he spoke up.
"Good morning." Lita simply looked at him and said nothing before she returned her attention back to the stove. Ethan, on the other hand, smiled at him and returned the greeting as he continued to eat his breakfast.
It looked like the redhead already made some coffee so he walked over to pour some for himself. That's when Lita finally decided to speak up, but still didn't look at him.
"I made pancakes," she said gesturing at the plate of pancakes on the kitchen table, while she took a seat on one of the chairs with a mug of coffee, "there's plenty if you want some."
"Okay. Thanks." He took a seat at the table as well with his own mug of coffee.
No one said anything and it was a pretty awkward breakfast with the two opting to just drink coffee while avoiding any sort of eye contact with the other. Neither of them had an appetite since both were distracted by the events of the night before. Lita was just eager to leave and go back home, she didn't want to be in the same house, let alone the same room as Adam. Maybe she was running away like Dawn accused her, but there was no other option because she didn't want to deal with him and wasn't ready for that at the moment.
"How's your foot?" Adam asked after a while.
"Fine," Lita responded. And then it became awkwardly quiet once again for a while before she broke the silence. "Sweetie," she began to say when she turned her attention away from her mug of coffee and to Ethan who seemed to be done with breakfast, "if you're done eating, then go wash your hands and face, and finish getting ready for school."
"Okay," Ethan nodded as he got up from the table and placed the dishes he was using in the sink and left to do as he was told.
"So you're going home today?" Ethan asked as Lita got up from the chair she previously occupied and started to clean the table.
"Yes," Lita replied taking a food container out of the pantry. "Trish is going to pick me up in an hour and we're going to stop by my place to drop off my things and then head to work." She placed a couple of pancakes into the container and set the container in front of him before she continued. "You didn't eat anything so just take this with you and you can eat it when you feel like it."
"Thank you. You know you can still stay if you need to."
"No I can't," Lita shook her head. "Bad idea."
"Why?"
She sighed, finally looking at him who was already looking at her. "Why do you think Adam?"
"Right. Well, maybe we should talk about it."
"There's nothing to talk about."
"Yes there is. You told me-"
"Okay," Lita interrupted him. "Let me be more clear then. There is nothing that I want to talk about. I know what I said to you and I know what you said to me. Again, that's nothing I want to talk about. At least not right now."
"We can't just ignore what was said and done."
She sighed. "I know. I just... we... nothing..." she trailed off because she didn't really know what she wanted to say. She just knew she didn't want to talk about anything but he seemed adamant about it.
That's when Ethan showed up in the kitchen once again with his book bag in his hands. Thank you Ethan. "Are you ready to go to school now?" She asked the new occupant of the kitchen.
"Yes," Ethan nodded.
She walked over to Ethan and knelt down so they were at the same height level. "Sweetie, do you want to come back here with daddy or do you want to go home with me after daycare?"
"Why can't we all just come here?"
Lita was getting annoyed by this question because she already answered this question yesterday, but but tried not to show it. "That's not what I asked you Ethan. And we already went over this. Do you want to come back home with daddy or me?"
"Why can't we all just come here?" He asked once again and that was when she couldn't hide the fact that she was irritated.
"Because I said so, okay?" Ethan backed away from her and looked a little scared of her while Adam was surprised by her tone and answer. He never seen her talk to Ethan like this before. He had seen her discipline him before when he did something he wasn't supposed to, but Ethan didn't really do anything right now. Sure both him and Lita explained to Ethan that they weren't going to stay with Adam for long, but he didn't think she should have gave him a 'because I said so' answer.
"So answer my question otherwise I will make a choice for you," she continued still quite irritated. "Are you coming home to me or are you coming back here?"
"I'm staying with daddy. You're mean," with that said, Ethan left the room.
"What the hell was that about?" Adam asked Lita who stood up and turned around to face him with a scowl present on her face.
"None of your damn business. Ethan is my son. I can talk to him in any way I want."
"No," Adam began to correct her, "he's our son and-"
"And you can handle him in any way you want when he's just with you, but I get to make the rules when he's with me. We went over with this already."
"But right now he's with both of us. He just asked you a question-"
"Which I already explained to him last night and multiple other times," the redhead interrupted the blonde. "So don't you start with me right now." She turned around and tried to walk away but he gabbed her wrist and turned her back around so she was facing him. "If I were you I would get the hell off of me and leave me alone right now or-"
"Or else what?" He interrupted her and continued after she said nothing. "Look, the problems you have with me right now, do not take them out on Ethan."
"Or maybe for once you can be the bad cop and you can tell Ethan that we will never ever be a family and that is all your fault! Maybe for once you can answer his questions and tell him how you are the one who left us in the first place! Maybe for once you can tell this all of this is your fault in the first damn place!" She finally exploded and he knew this was coming soon. He knew she was bound to blow up after everything that was said and happened the day before. He wasn't naive so he knew she wouldn't forgive him so fast if she even did in the first place, but he really wasn't expecting something like this.
"Lita-"
"Just shut up," she interrupted him, "and leave me the hell alone! And you know what else?! Get it through your stupid little brain that we will never happen again! Whatever happened yesterday between us does not matter! It does not change the fact that me and you will never be together again! We will never be a family! And you have no one to blame but yourself!" She pulled her wrist out of Adam's hold and was surprised and glad he didn't make it difficult for her.
But then she turned around and saw Ethan standing in the doorway. Looked like he was back and he looked angry, upset, and confused. After all, he did hear her last couple of statements, specifically the one when she told Adam they would never be a family.
"I hate you!" Ethan shouted and she knew he was talking to her because he was looking right at her. He ran out of the room and she began to follow him, but she was once again stopped by Adam.
"I'll talk to him-"
"So you can make him even more against me than he already is?" Lita shot at him. "No thank you. Just do me a favor and don't talk to me. If it doesn't concern Ethan, I don't want you to talk to me at all. Got it?" She didn't wait for him to answer, and she left.
Adam was too much in shock to do or say anything at the moment. It took him a while but he was finally able to leave the kitchen and he went to find Ethan so he could talk to him and take him to school. He didn't have to look far because he saw the mother-son duo in the middle of the conversation on the couch. He didn't know what they were talking about even though he did have his suspicions. His suspicions were confirmed when he saw the two hug.
"I'm sorry mommy," he heard Ethan say. "I don't hate you. I was angry because you yelled at daddy. I love you."
"I know. I'm sorry too sweetie. I love you."
The two ended the hug soon after and Ethan went off to put his shoes on so Adam could take him to school. Adam was about to follow after him, but Lita stopped him.
"Wait." He did just that as he stopped in place and turned around to face her. "This is the first and last time we have that type discussion when Ethan is in the same place as us. I do not apologize for the way I talked to you because you deserved it," Adam rolled his eyes, but said nothing since she wasn't done, "but it just shouldn't happen in front of Ethan. It affects him a lot as we just saw."
"So maybe one of us should stop acting like a bitch all the time."
"Or maybe one of us should stop pissing the other off all the time."
Adam said nothing, simply turning around so he could go to work after he dropped off Ethan at school. He was confused as to why Lita was angry at him. It seemed like her angriness heightened even more after she found out the truth. He thought for sure she would have calmed down a little after the truth, but that definitely wasn't the case.
Lita went upstairs to the room and began to cry because she just couldn't handle it anymore. She was so sick and tired of all of this. She was so frustrated about every thing. She was angry at herself for how she talked to Ethan when he didn't deserve it at all. She was angry at herself for not being able to forgive and forget what happened years ago when all Adam was doing was trying to protect her. She was angry at herself for not being able to hate Adam like she wanted. She was angry at herself for still being in love with him. She was angry at herself for what happened the day before. She didn't know how she let it get that far. She felt like not only did she send Ethan mixed signals about them staying with Adam for the past month or so, she thought she was sending mixed signals to Adam as well. She did tell him that she was still in love, but she also told him that there would never be a future for the two ever again and then she just had to go and sleep with him. She was angry at herself and let it out on him because all of her problems did concern him.
Adam and Ethan just got back home after the former picked up the latter from daycare. Adam decided to have a little talk with Ethan before either of them did anything.
"Ethan," Adam said when he sat down next to him, "you can't talk to mommy like that again like you did this morning."
Ethan nodded. "I know. I'm sorry."
"I know you are. But you shouldn't talk to anyone like that at all, especially not your mom."
"She kept yelling at you. Why was she so mad? Is she mad at me?"
"No," Adam shook his head. "She's not mad at you." Just me. "She's just upset."
"What is she upset about?"
Me. "I don't know."
"Why doesn't she want to come here? Why can't we all just stay together?"
"Because she's okay now. She doesn't need anymore help. We told you it was only for a little while. Now she feels better and isn't sick and she can go back home."
"But I want all of us to live together."
Adam sighed. "I know."
"Then why can't we?"
"I... It's... I promise I'll explain it to you when you get older."
"When I'm five? I'm almost five, so you'll tell me then?"
Adam chuckled. "No."
"When?"
"I don't know right now, but I promise when you get older and when you'll be able to understand better."
"Why won't I be able to understand right now?"
"It's not easy for me or your mom to explain right now. If we're not able to explain it to you well, then you won't be able to understand."
"Okay."
