Chapter 5: Sandy

The night was cold, and the trees were bare as Sandy flew above the quiet town of Burgess. He sprinkled a fair amount of golden sand over the wooden houses, and finally stopped at Jack's lake. The golden man floated around, feet barely touching the cold ice.

"Sandy?" Jack called.

The said man turned around to see Jack standing barefoot. He greeted the teen silently, a small smile gracing his features. Sandy always stopped at Jack's lake to give him the best dreams he could offer. This was the first time he had seen Jack awake and not sleeping soundly on a tree or inside a snow bank. A question mark formed over Sandy's head regarding the reason he was awake.

"Oh, uh, I had to do something." the teen said, scratching the back of his head.

The question mark stayed over Sandy's head.

"It's nothing, really."

The Guardian of Dreams shrugged and was about to leave when he heard a crash and a groan. He turned around to see that Jack had fallen into a hole near some trees beside the lake. Jack emerged to see yet another golden question mark. He scratched the back of his neck and blushed.

"Oops?" he offered uncertainly.

Sandy's brows furrowed and he moved closer to the hole, which was emitting a soft, icy blue light. Jack tried to cover it.

"It's not ready yet," he explained, shielding it from Sandy's line of view.

He crossed his arms and stared pointedly at Jack. Seeing that Jack was really not going to let him see whatever it was, he threw a ball of golden sand at him, knocking him out promptly. He peered into the hole to see a hollowed out space filled completely with ice furniture, except for a wooden canvas stand. He floated in through the hole, barely touching the swirly slide that led down to what seemed to be a living room. The walls were decorated wonderfully with paintings of exquisite beauty. For once in his Guardian life, Sandy was completely surprised. He wondered if Jack had made these.

"I did make those, in case you were wondering." Jack said, sounding amused. "You know, knocking people out isn't the only way to persuade people."

Jack rubbed his eyes and yawned, leaving his post at the entrance of his Snow Warren.

"Bunny inspired me to make a Snow Warren," he said, walking towards one of the snow couches in the middle of the room. "What do you think?"

Sandy surveyed his surroundings. It seemed Jack wasn't only skilled in painting, but in architecture as well. Sandy nodded, and smiled, looking around and signifying his approval of the magnificent use if space. Jack made his way to a small part of the wall that was slightly deeper than the rest of the wall and was surrounded by a door frame. With a flick of his staff, the block of ice was pulled upwards and another room was revealed. Jack gestured for Sandy to enter, and he complied. He floated near a circular table in front of the counter. Jack made his way to the freezer behind the counter, grabbed a Popsicle, and began to eat it.

"So... Now you know about my artsy thing." Jack said, nodding. "Everyone knows except you, you know," he pointed out. Sandy nodded. "But you're the first to see my Snow Warren! It's my first project on architecture."

Sandy smiled at the boy's attempt to rid of the awkward atmosphere. A golden painting popped up over Sandy's head, followed by an equal sign, and then what looked like Venus, the beauty goddess. Jack blushed when he realized the meaning.

"Thanks Sandy," he said sincerely.

The Golden Guardian smiled. He pointed towards the door and Jack flicked his hand to open the door.

"Bye Sandman," he said, smirking slightly.

The said Guardian waved in reply, and turned, about to leave, when Jack called him back.

"Wait!" he said, and ran towards another ice door that opened to his reply. Soon, Jack returned, a painting in hand. It was a painting of the Guardians, their backs turned, and shadows on the ground. Their arms were slung around each other, frozen in the motion of laughing. Their shadows spelled out 'FAMILY'. Sandy was amazed. Jack handed it to Sandy and smiled.

"For you," he explained.

The older immortal nodded and a golden 'Thank You' floated over his head. He finally left, contented with the outcome of this night. Jack ran a hand through his hair as he stared at the moon, like he did every night, and he noticed it glowed a little brighter. A voice echoed through the night, one he had only ever heard twice,

"Well done, Jack Frost. Welcome to your new family."
