The following days were calm.
Tony never brought Sam's past as promised and as promised, he kept an eye on her. He was always around her–always. And when he wasn't–which was a miracle–he had Jarvis checking on her every five minutes, literally.
She pretended to be pissed but deep down, she didn't mind. It was nice to know someone cared about her and her well-being.
She wished her sister was like that.
"Jarvis, let Tony know that I'm going to take a bath and I don't want you to check on me while I'm having a bath okay?" Sam said, climbing up the stairs to her room.
"Of course, Sam."
Sam murmured a small thank you before grabbing her backpack and opening the small pocket Tony didn't take time to pray his nose into. She took the very tiny cellphone and put into it the SIM card she had carefull kept in her bra since Tony had gone through her stuff.
"Perfect," she said when she turned it on.
She closed the door of her personal bathroom, ran a bath and dialed Natasha's number. Because Sam had to tell her she was still alive in case she didn't know, in case she cared but she wasn't answering. She never did. Probably on some fucking mission, thought Sam. She sighed and dialed another number and she was pretty sure that person will be happy to hear her.
"Fury speaking," the voice said on the other line.
"Hey, Nicky, what's u–"
But she never got the chance to finish her sentence. "Romanoff... where the fuck have you been? My teams have been trying to track your ass down for days and you just called me and asked me what's up!"
She rolled her eyes. Why did Fury love screaming so much? "I actually didn't finish my sentence. So I actually didn't really ask you what's up," she told him quite seriously while she turned off the tap water.
"ROMANOFF!"
"Jeez, calm down," Sam said, holding the phone away from her ears. When she was sure he was about to yell again, she pressed it back against her ears. "I've been compromised, that's what you guys say, right? I don't know how but they found me and they almost killed me. I almost fucking died!" She looked at her face in the mirror; her bruises were still there, the marks on her necks too. "
"How did you out of there alive?" Fury asked after a moment.
For a second, she hesitated. But eventually, he will find out. He was Nick Fury after all. "Stark saved me."
"Stark... as in Tony Stark?"
"Yes and, " she chewed her lips. "I really don't wanna leave Malibu, I don't wanna leave him. He's nice you know, I like him and I'm pretty sure he does like me too. And leaving would mean leaving him and never seeing him again–"
"Romanoff–"
"He's my friend. I've never had one before him," she admitted and Fury could imagine tears swimming in her eyes. "Please don't make me leave."
"Iron Man has a few ennemies out there," Fury told her. "You could be in danger."
"I'm always in danger," Sam added. And it was true. "l try to keep him out of trouble. He needs someone just like I need someone. I'll be careful, I swear."
Fury paused, then said. "Alright. I'll inform Agent Romanoff about your current situation when she's back from her mission."
"Thank you," Sam said with a huge smile that Fury couldn't see. She waited and finally asked. "Is she okay? Nat's fine, right?"
Fury was aware of the complicated relationship that Sam and Natasha shared but he never made any comments. These girls loved each other to death, however, none of them was capable to show this love. "As far as I'm concerned, Agent Romanoff is perfectly fine. She'll be back in less than a week. Do I need to give her a message?"
She thought about it. She had a lot of things to say but some things were better left unsaid right? "Nope. No message."
"As you wish," Fury replied. "Be careful, Romanoff."
"Always am! Bye Nicky."
"Don't call me that!" and the line went dead and she smiled.
She actually liked Fury.
Five days later, Natasha Romanoff was back. There was no bruise or cut on her face. As though, she had never left the Helicarrier. However, she was pissed because she quickly made her way up to Fury's office and she walked into it without knocking because that was what people did when they were pissed– they didn't knock.
"Agent Romanoff, please come in," Fury said with sarcasm when he put down his pen and to look into her the Russian's green eyes. "Sit down!"
"I rather st–"
"Sit. Down. Now," he emphasised each other and Natasha obeyed. She folded her arms and waited for him to talk. "I suppose you're here because you've heard about her safe hourse being attacked," she stayed quiet but he took it as a yes. "Your sister is fine, Agent Romanoff. I had her on the phone. She sounded okay just like her natural sass was perfectly fonctionnal," Natasha couldn't help but smirk. She loved and hated her sister's sass. "She's really fine, Romanoff."
And she believed him. "Where is she?"
"At Tony Stark's place."
"Excuse me?" she asked confused.
She just could have heard right. Stark. As in Tony Stark.
"Tony Stark happened to be in Oregon when the safe house where Sam lived were attacked. He saved her and now she's living with him," Fury explained. "She doesn't want to leave him. They apparently get along pretty well."
Of course, they do, though Natasha.
"She's not safe with him. A lot of many wants him dead. She's not safe!" Natasha got off her chair. "Stark is trouble. He's insane."
"And he's looking for an assitant. The old one left him. You'll be his new assistant. This way you'll keep an eye on Stark."
"Why?"
"He's dying. He's suffering from palladium poisoning. So far he's fine but it won't last. You need to make sure he stays alive," Fury told her and he meant each word. "And then you'll be able to keep on eyes on your sister. I'm sure she'll be really happy to see you," Natasha gave him a skeptical look. "You need to talk with your sister."
"We always end up yelling at each other," Natasha said to him.
"I've noticed," Fury admitted. "She thinks you don't care about her."
"Of course, I do. Just because I don't call her everyday, it doesn't mean I don't care. I think about her all the time. I try to stay alive for her. She knows that!"
"I'm certain that deep down, she knows that but she just needs you to tell her that. She needs to hear you it from you," Fury said in a serious tone. "You'll leave for California in three days and we'll have a defrief before you leave."
She just nodded and left the room. This new mission was going to be interesting.
I'm sorry for any mistakes!
