Tokubetsu na Mado: Futatsu no Chiisai Kumo

"Mother, why did Father go away?" he remembered asking to a tall woman whose face he couldn't remember.

"Why of course, he went to Tokyo to get a big job so that we can all live happily in the future!"

He was only a little boy but he could easily perceive the nervousness in her voice.

"That's why I'm going to go meet up with him and tell him he should come back already! Don't worry, I won't be long. You're a big boy, aren't you Kyouya? You can take care of yourself for a few days while we come back?"

He nodded, even if he knew she was lying.

The woman went out and left him inside the darkness of their house.

She never came back. No one did.

Hibari Kyouya was taking nap. Or at least that's what he was trying to do when the doorbell rang and woke him up. He scowled. There was a second ring. He scowled harder. Wasn't there anyone home to open the door? A third ring seemed to prove that theory right.

He got up angrily and stomped towards the door with his tonfas in hand, ready to teach whatever herbivore out there what it meant to wake him up from his nap. He slammed the door open with a loud bang and stepped outside.

There was no one there.

Hibari's first instinct was to dash outside and try to catch the bloody prankster and bite them to death. But his murderous thoughts were cut short by a squeaky wail coming from his feet.

He was startled to see a basket with a bundle of clean clothes. As he was about to poke the bundle with his tonfa, the thing moved, which made the Cloud Guardian nearly jump out of his skin. Kneeling down he took a peek under the cotton clothes and his eyes widened like saucers.

The moving bundles were actually human.

"I'm hoooome" Dino called merrily as he pranced through the door. He saw Kyouya's shoes at the genkan and smiled. His love was usually very busy and it was not often that their off times would match, so the prospect of some relaxing time together made him tingle.

"Hey, Kyouya, are you up? I was thinking of a roma-" he was cut off by a slipper hitting him square in the face as he entered the living room. "Why did you do that? That hurt!" he complained with teary eyes.

"You woke them up, moron." Kyouya replied coldly, sending an angry glare that sent chills down Dino's spine.

The Mafioso boss quirked an eyebrow in confusion. Them? And then he heard loud squeaky wails and he noticed the basket on Hibari's lap containing two crying and squirming human babies.

"Uh… Kyouya? What's the meaning of this?" he asked as he watched the skylark pick up one of the toddlers and pat its back soothingly. As the first infant calmed down, Hibari used his free hand to rock the basket in which the other one was still crying.

Dino took the moment to observe the child in Hibari's arms. It was probably no older than two months, but it already had a very distinguishable tuft of raven black hair on its head. Its eyes were small and it seemed unable to keep them open as of yet; its cheeks were puffy and its nose was thin and pointy. Dino had seen a baby just like this one in an old picture that he'd always treasured dearly.

"N-nee, Kyouya? These kids… they're not… yours by any chance?" he asked fearfully.

The Cloud Guardian looked up at him with deadpanned eyes, as if he didn't understand why the question seemed so important.

"I found them outside the door, so I suppose they are."

When Dino opened his eyes he was lying on the hard wooden floor of the living room. He tried to recall what he was doing there while rubbing his sore body. Then he remembered. Kyouya… babies… Kyouya having babies that were most definitely not Dino's… and then he'd fainted from the shock. Apparently, Kyouya hadn't been the least concerned about it though, since he was lying in the exact same spot where he'd lost consciousness.

He glanced around the room but Kyouya wasn't anywhere in sight, or the babies. As he stood up and started looking for them around the house, the Cavallone boss wrecked his brain trying his hardest to convince himself that Kyouya would never cheat on him and that there must be a very good reason for him to have two babies that looked so much like him.

By the time he reached the bedroom he shared with his lover, he'd regrettably concluded there was no other explanation. He wanted to cry. He heard the babies' voices coming from inside the room and wondered if he really wanted to confront Kyouya now, if he really wanted to hear the truth and get his heart broken. But he finally decided that he did want to know. At least, he wanted to figure out where he had gone wrong about their relationship, and what they were going to do from now on. Taking a deep breath, he opened the door and walked inside the room, his heart beating so fast he thought it would explode.

"K-kyouya?"

The younger man looked up at him with curiosity. His hands were busy changing one of the babies' diapers.

"Did I do something wrong?" Dino finally asked after trying to muster up all his courage.

Hibari stared at him blankly, as if he didn't know what the hell he was talking about. Dino felt a surge of anger rushing up his head.

"There must've been something, right?! Like you always say I'm loud and annoying and stupid so maybe you got tired of that and found some woman to screw, one that wasn't annoying… Y-you know you could've told me. I mean if you went so far as to get a girl pregnant, you could've told me you didn't want to suffer me anymore. I… I would've preferred that!" his voice broke and he realized he was about to cry. He wanted to flee from all the pain, but he'd already decided he'd confront the truth about this.

There was a moment of silence and Dino wondered if Kyouya was thinking of the best way to punish him for being a nuisance. But instead the silence was broken when he felt a pair of fingers touching his head lightly.

"Did you hit your head when you fainted before? You're saying a lot of things I don't understand."

To say he was confused would be an understatement. So maybe Hibari Kyouya was not the most affectionate person out there, but even if he wasn't very vocal about his feelings he still loved the Italian herbivore. He'd even made room in his already busy schedule to match his off days with Dino's (of course, he'd never tell that to the idiot herbivore and just let him think it was a happy coincidence). And now the blond Mafioso was histerical about god-knows-what that included women and being annoyed at something and he really had no idea of what was going on.

Dino scowled at him, his eyes brimming with tears. Hibari felt the impending need to wipe them away, but the anger in his lover's eyes kept him from it.

"Don't fuck with me! You really think you can lie to me with how things are right now? If you were really so tired of me you should've dumped me first, I never intended to keep you against your will or something like that. It's more painful for me like this." The tears streamed down his cheeks, but he covered his face with his hands.

Hibari felt something crack inside him. "So you say… you want to end this?" his heart felt as if it were caught in his throat.

Dino fell on his knees, still crying. "Of course I don't want to… How could I…? I love Kyouya so much… but I don't want… it hurts too much. If Kyouya prefers to go with some woman and have babies I don't…"

The skylark was still very confused as to what was going on and why his fourteen-year relationship with the Cavallone boss was suddenly on the verge of collapsing, but he was starting to pick up some bits and pieces, even if they still didn't make the slightest sense.

"If I wanted to get myself a woman, I wouldn't use my day off to wait for you at home."

Okay, so maybe he hadn't intended for it to sound as needy and corny as it had, but hopefully surrendering a bit of his pride would show Dino that he was serious about it.

The Cavallone boss sniffled and looked up at him, his eyes red and puffy from crying. "Y-you're not fooling me. I'm not as stupid as you seem to believe, I know babies don't come from cabbages. You said it yourself, didn't you? I-I asked if they were yours and you said they w-were."

Hibari kneeled in front of him and wiped the tears from his cheeks gently. "I said I found them at the door so I decided to keep them. Maybe you should see a doctor, you've apparently gone deaf too."

Now Dino was confused.

"I don't think I'm following you Kyouya. What does 'found at the door' mean, exactly?"

The younger man cocked his head and looked at him as if he thought he was an idiot –and he probably did.

"I was taking a nap when the bell rang. I went to see who it was to bite them to death but found those two instead."

"So you… there's no other woman? You don't hate me or want to get rid of me?"

"If I want to get rid of something I do it. I wouldn't discard something that satisfies me."

Dino knew Kyouya wasn't really the romantic type, so that little admission was enough to make his heart flutter.

"B-but those kids! They look a lot like you!" he remembered suddenly, although he was starting to think he might have gotten worked up over nothing.

Hibari just shrugged to confirm that thought. Which made this whole scene really, really embarrassing.

"Uh…uhm… okay… I see. This is very awkward… I just… you know? Picking up random kids isn't really your thing so I thought…"

The Cloud Guardian turned his back to him and walked to the basket where the two babies were now sleeping. From where Dino was kneeling, he couldn't see the toddlers, but he could see Hibari's sad, apprehensive expression. Like he felt sad for these abandoned children. It was then that Dino remembered what Kyouya had told him about his own past and everything finally started to make sense.

He stood up and walked to Kyouya's side, nuzzling the back of his head. "I'm sorry, Kyouya. I shouldn't have doubted you. I'm supposed to be the older one here and yet I made a scene for no reason. Please forgive me."

The skylark didn't reply, but leaned back into Dino's chest, and that was all the confirmation he needed. They stood like that quietly for a while, watching the two babies sleeping.

"Kyouya…?" Dino finally asked, his lips ghosting on top of the younger man's head, who replied with a quiet hum. "So what… is going to happen now? With us and… them? I mean… What do you want us to be now?"

Hibari turned his head to look at him, with a very light flush covering his cheeks.

"A Family."

Dino laughed and leaned in to kiss his love. That's exactly what he'd thought too.

-Owari-

I wrote this a while ago, but decided this was a perfect moment for publishing it given Dino's birthday and Valentine's just passed. I at first thought about publishing independently, but since it happens within the same canon as this collection and Il nostro, I decided to put it here instead. Besides, it falls within the same "family" theme I'm dealing with in most of the chapters.

Writing Hibari is HARD. It's hard to imagine how he'd act if he were in this situation, so maybe that's a little OOC, but I overall like it. Hope you guys like it too :D
