CHAPTER FOURTEEN
It had been two weeks since Sarah set her mind to getting the truth out of Stahl and the blonde bitch had been nowhere to be found. It was an eery feeling as she waited for the other shoe to drop.
She was bitchy and she knew it. Opie had stayed really late at the club house the night before because they'd had a stupid fight over his leaving towels on the bathroom floor. While it had been a stupid fight, it was the first real blow out since she'd moved to Charming. It had to happen, it was part of a relationship but it had her nervous.
Like any good blow out other things had come up. He'd brought up Kozik and she'd shot back with a remark about Donna but she couldn't remember half of what was said. They'd gone to bed angry, he'd left early and come home late. And today he'd left early as well and it was getting late.
Sarah called his registered phone. It went to voice mail. She'd only call the prepay in an emergency and this wasn't an emergency. This was her probably making too much out of nothing.
Even if he didn't come home, she was going to need to eat so she grabbed her purse and headed out of the house. The grocery store was a five minute ride and she caught sight of a dark sedan behind her. Sarah almost smiled, the bitch was back.
Once in the store she took her time, let Stahl get a good look at her stocking up to fill the pantry and fridge. On impulse she lingered in the small feminine section and tossed a pregnancy test into the cart, that should get the woman all but drooling at the mouth. Even with the confrontation looming Sarah had no real plan, she was just going to have to play it by ear.
Stahl didn't approach her until she was at the check out. The debit card Opie had given her declined just as she walked over like perfect timing. "Money problems?"
"Wrong card," Sarah replied as she swiped her card. Opie didn't like her using her money for the house but what was the alternative? "Something I can do for you Agent?"
"Just wanted to see how you're doing. I've got a good idea now," she glanced down at the bag in the cart with the pregnancy test right on top. "I think that we should talk Sarah, really sit down and talk. If you could come into the police station, I've got an office there."
"Sure, you show me the warrant for my testimony or arrest and I'll meet you at the station lickety split." Sarah took the receipt from the clerk. "Excuse me, I'd hate to run over your foot with my cart because that could be considered assaulting a federal agent."
"Certainly could be. Why don't I walk you out to your car?"
"Only if you carry the bags," Sarah replied.
"Not happening," but she fell in step with Sarah as she walked out the store. "I'm not surprised that you two are having financial problems, it was the same with Donna. And she felt trapped. Trapped, scared and alone even though her husband was at her side. He abandoned her emotionally Sarah. Don't you worry about history repeating itself? And a baby? Do you think that's smart?"
"Financially we're fine, I'm sure that you knew that already though. I'm damn sure that you've looked into both of us extensively. Probably have the phones and house bugged."
"That's just paranoia, no bugs. Just you and me having a conversation. I want to help you."
"I need more information before I'll consider that you're telling the truth. I want an unedited copy of Donna's statement."
"That's asking for a lot, it's a classified document."
"I'm sure you never met a rule that you couldn't bend, June. So, figure this out and I'll consider that you have my best interest at heart."
"I'll get you a copy first thing in the morning," Stahl promised. "And you'll read it and then come into the office."
"Fine," Sarah replied as they reached the car. "Make sure first thing means first thing."
###
The house was dark when Opie stepped inside but there was a light on in the kitchen. He found a plate of food for him in the microwave, the table neatly set for one. He realized that Sarah not being up to fuss at him after he'd come home after midnight without calling her at all meant that she was still pissed with him. He was still pissed at her but it was getting harder to stay that way when he realized that she'd made shepards pie, fresh corn bread and green beans.
His stomach growled at the mere sight of the cold food but he put the plate back in the microwave and headed for the bedroom. The lights were all off but he could make out her shape on the bed, she was curled on her side and facing the wall. If she got any closer to the wall she'd wake with an imprint of it on her skin.
Opie toed off his boots, took off his cut and stripped down to his boxers. "Sarah." She didn't budge even when his weight shifted the bed. His girl was out for the count, there was only one sure fire way he knew to wake her but wasn't sure it wouldn't end with him being kneed in the groin.
He moved as close to her as he could get, his front pressed against her back and his arm around her waist. "Sarah," he spoke directly in her ear. She let out a moan settled her body against his. "Wake up Baby."
"Hmm?" She kept her eyes closed but leaned back against him.
"I'll pick my towels up off of the floor. Well, I will when I remember to." Opie ran his hand up and down her leg.
"I'd appreciate you trying. I don't like fighting with you. I know we have to fight but I don't have to like it and I especially don't like going to sleep without you."
"I'm sorry. I might have some later nights. There's something that I have to tell you," Opie pressed his lips to her shoulder. I think that it might upset you."
"Upset me? What is it Opie?"
"The day we fought, when I was out clearing my head on the road Ellie called me. She called me, wanted to see me. Kenny did too. I went to their grandparents house and had dinner with them, stayed a while after until they were into bed. We talked a lot and they... they want me in their lives. They don't want to come home but they want me to be part of things."
"That's fantastic Opie, why would that upset me?" Sarah turned so that she was facing him.
"They want me to be a part of things but they don't want to... they don't want to know you. I'm sorry Baby but..."
"I get it," Sarah reached out and stroked her hand over the side of his face. "I don't expect them to ever want to know me."
"They'll come around," Opie assured her. He needed them too. If they'd only give Sarah a shot they'd see what she meant to him. "I'll be leaving early in the mornings, going to take them to school and pick them up when I can."
"That sounds great. Let me know if there are times when I shouldn't be here so you can bring them over."
"They don't want to come here. Jax said we can always hang at his place and the kids love Abel."
"I'm glad that you're going to be spending time with the kids Opie, I really am."
"But?"
"No but, just wondering if them not liking me was holding them back from coming home with you."
"It's not. There's too much Donna here, they don't want to come back."
"Okay," Sarah smiled at him. "I left you dinner in the microwave."
"I saw it before I came up here. I should have called."
"Seriously Opie, it's okay. I get it. I'm just really happy that the kids are back in your life. I know you were missing them. You want me to go and warm up your food?"
"Eat with me, I know you probably ate but you can manage some more. I miss sitting down for dinner with you."
"I can handle that," Sarah smiled at him, "I picked up beer when I went to the grocery store where I ran into our friend."
"Stahl? What did she say to you?"
"Same shit," she shrugged and slipped off the bed.
"That's my shirt," Opie pointed out with a grin. "I could tell you to take it off."
"We are not eating dinner naked until there are curtains that are not sheer as shit on the windows and no shades."
"Work on fixing that then," he slid off of the bed, his foot kicking a plastic bag. "And you bitch about me leaving stuff on the floor. What's this?" He asked the question but knew the answer the second he took the cardboard box out of the bag. "Baby, why do you have a pregnancy test?"
"Oh," Sarah stopped at the door, "that."
"Yeah, that." He looked between her and the box. "Sarah?"
"It's nothing, really. Nothing at all. Stahl was following me, figured I'd pick up something to give her a thrill."
"You sure that's all it is? Because the entire time we've been together, you haven't had your monthly thing."
"You can say period Opie, I promise it won't kill you. And I have. I so have. It was..." Sarah trailed off, he could see the gears in her mind turning behind her eyes. "I had to make Kozik go and get me tampons. Well, I didn't have to but it was funny as fuck. Oh God, that had to be... two months ago? Oh God, two months ago."
"Sarah," Opie saw her eyes turn frantic. "Easy. We're just going to take the test and find out."
"This can not be happening. It has to be stress. Stress, that's it. I've had plenty of stress." She let out a brittle laugh.
Opie dropped the test box on the bed and walked over to her. "Just breathe," he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close. "If it's not stress, everything's going to be fine. This isn't a bad thing Sarah."
"I didn't say it was bad. I just... I didn't even think of it as a possibility for me. Me? A mom?"
"You'd be a great mom, don't you ever doubt that. Look, we don't know anything for sure yet. What do you say we find out? Deal with it when we know for sure." He was pretty sure he already knew. It would explain the few extra pounds she'd put on and how her curves seemed to have been magnified. She was also hormonal, moody and seriously horny. Opie was a fool for not figuring it out sooner.
"You want this?"
"You don't?"
"I didn't say that Op, I'm asking if you want this. You really want another kid?"
"Yeah, I really want another kid with you."
"Okay," Sarah nodded her head. "I need to take the test."

Pregnant. Knocked up. Bun in the oven. All the cliché terms for pregnancy she knew raced through her mind as Sarah lay close to Opie. She had her eyes closed, kept her breathing even with effort so that he'd stay asleep.
Back in Tacoma she'd gone off the pill when she realized she wasn't having sex anyway. It had saved her fifty dollars a month in copay. Now she was in Charming, pregnant and up to her neck in shit. They both were and she wasn't seeing a way out of it yet. Was there a way?
The morning would bring Donna's statement, maybe she would know more once she saw it but she didn't think so. All she had to do was figure out how to get the Feds off of their asses and be sure that Opie wasn't going to go down by friendly fire.
It was time to have a talk with Jax, to lay everything she suspected out and watch his reaction. Sure, they weren't close friends but she knew him well enough to read him. If he was in on the whole thing maybe he'd give them a way to walk away now. If he wasn't and really believed in the things that JT said than maybe he'd be able to help. Being pregnant was going to go a long way with Jax. He had a good heart, maybe even a soft one, underneath his toughened exterior or at least he used to.
It was all she could do to hope that he still did and that he wasn't caught up in whatever was going on, if he was she figured that Opie's kids would truly be orphans and she'd get to see Kozik again. The risk was great but there was no other way she could think of to get them out of this. If she didn't, she'd just lose Opie because there was no doubt in her mind that the club wasn't going to just let their hard feelings go.
Next to her Opie shifted, his hand moving to rest on her stomach. Sarah let go of everything clouding her mind, let herself forget so that she could enjoy what was happening right in that moment. Being a mother had never really been in the plan for her, she'd wanted to be in a relationship and none of those had ever progressed to where it felt right and she'd wanted to be settled and successful.
She'd manage to settle in Tacoma, create a nice life for herself with a good paying job that she enjoyed but still there had been something missing. The only time she'd even come close to feeling whole had been while she was writing to Opie. Now she had him in her life, they were together and once they managed their way through all of the weeds they would be able to just live a happy somewhat normal life together.
