May 16, 12:00 P.M. Engarde Mansion Remains

The sirens of police vehicles grew intense as they surrounded the massive heap of debris that remained after the collapse. The smell of burning kerosene and gas oil, as well as the combustion of various volatile chemicals, added to the sense of destruction that was present.

The whole area seemed to be molten and becoming one with the ground itself. Detective Gumshoe stepped out of the Mercedes Benz that the chief had lent him and was amazed by the amount of heat coming from the wreckage. He radioed the department.

"Pals, this is Detective Gumshoe. I'd like to suspend digging of the rubble, because it is still rather hot because of the fuel fires caused when the bullet train hit it. We could proceed, but we would need some protective equipment. Let's wait an hour and see."

Gumshoe got back into the Benz and sat in it doing various activities, including listening the radio, until the hour hand on the clock had moved around once. It was now 1:00 P.M.

He stepped out near the wreckage again, and it was not hot. Assuming that all of the fuel generated fires had burned themselves out, he radioed the department again.

"It is safe to begin excavation of the rubble. Also, check to see if there's anything valuable we could use in our investigation into de Killer II."

May 16, 2:45 P.M. Engarde Mansion Rubble

Phoenix, Maya, and Pearl all walked onto the scene, and saw that the once mighty, 10 story Engarde Mansion was all now in pieces of broken concrete, tile, and stone upon the ground. Two excavators were on each side, scooping the pieces into a single pile on the right side of the mansion.

Gumshoe noticed their arrival, and went over towards them. "Pals, you will not believe how much rubble there was here back 3 hours ago... there was so much of it, that it was literally bulging out of the hole it was all in."

Now, the rubble pile filled the now empty foundation halfway.

Suddenly, when the bucket of the first excavator took another scoop, a person could be seen hunched over in the rubble pit.

Detective Gumshoe saw it; he asked himself, "Who might that be?" and pulled his three companions over.

As the bucket was raised, Gumshoe screamed, "Stop the excavation! There's a man in the rubble pit!"

As the bucket was lifted, a man in his thirties looked at Gumshoe, wondering if he was friend or foe. He was covered in dust and was cut up and bleeding from his face and arms. His voice wavered, "Ieeeee... I can say that you have won?"

At that sentence, Maya whispered, "Nick... I think he's de Killer II."

Phoenix yelled, "How is he even alive after all he went through during the collapse?"

The man sighed, "I... I am he..."

She proudly announced, "de Killer... you've gone around L.A, killing people by driving trains into buildings. You've given a man permission to put massive bombs all over the place. You've tried to kill me, Nick, Pearly, and Gumshoe, not to mention lots of other people. But you've lost. You can run, but you can never hide."

Officer Meekins descended into the pit and roughly twisted handcuffs onto de Killer's arms, and attached heavy-duty shackles to his legs. He then took a stand next to him and read him the Miranda warning, just as he had given it to Randall Klein just 5 days earlier.

"Mr. Shelly de Killer II, you are hereby under arrest for various charges in relations to what is whereby referred to as the 'Mad Bomber Saga'. You have the right to remain silent. If you choose to talk, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney; if you do not have one, an attorney will be appointed to you by the State of California. This does not interfere with your statutory rights. Do you understand?"

"Yes, sir...", he feebly mumbled as he was moved towards the armored car.

But before he was sealed in, Gumshoe added, "By the way... Officer Meekins will be happy to question you once we get to the station."

de Killer II exploded, "NO! I refuse to be questioned by that man! He's crazy, I tell you! Crazy!"

Before anything more could be heard, the back doors were shut and the armored car drove off to the police department. Gumshoe laughed, along with Phoenix, Maya, and Pearl at the whole thing, quite amused that de Killer's son was so animated and insulted.
