"Shall we start?" I asked. I looked around and everyone was nodding. Malfoy sat on the couch and starred at the floor. He was the only one not responding to me.
"We need to talk about patrols," I started. That was a new rule. Usually heads and prefects just watch during the day and at special events but since Voldemort has gotten stronger we need patrols at night.
"There are eight of us and twenty-four prefects. We should have at least seven people patrolling each night. That means that it is going to be two heads and five prefects. The two heads should not be from the same house and the prefects should have one from each house plus one more that is not in the same house as either head."
Everyone nodded. I quickly grabbed a piece of parchment and a quill.
"We should decide what days work best for everyone," Malfoy suddenly said. We all looked up at him in surprise.
"What?" Neville asked him. He shifted closer to me. He also knows I hate Malfoy and Malfoy hates me. He wanted to protect me.
"Let's say that someone has a tough day, the night before they shouldn't have to patrol." He was trying to get out of it on certain days. Malfoy and I have the same schedule. That means we both have the same hard days. That means there is a chance we would have to patrol on the same days. Not going to happen. He probably wants that so he can scare me or something.
"Okay well what nights are easiest for everyone?"
After a half an hour of debating the list was finished.
Monday: Draco, Hannah
Tuesday: Neville, Justin
Wednesday: Hannah, Hermione
Thursday: Neville, Padma
Friday: Hermione, Draco
Saturday: Justin, Michael
Sunday: Pansy, Padma
I had to patrol with Malfoy one day but we patrol different areas so we shouldn't have to run into each other on the patrol, just before and after. We don't have to start patrolling until Monday.
"Is that all we have to talk about?" Hannah asked. She glanced towards her room. She obviously wanted to sleep. I had to shake my head. Professor Dumbledore wanted me to talk about a few things.
"We need to discuss a few more things. First," I said glancing down at the piece of parchment Dumbledore gave me. It only had five things but it could take a while if that small list took half an hour.
"Heads get special privileges, listed in the letter, but we also have rules, also listed in the letter. Second, Dumbledore would like us to plan a dance."
Hannah, Pansy, and Padma instantly perked up while Michael and Justin sank lower in their seats. Neville looked okay with it but Malfoy looked like he might be sick.
"He wants it to be a dance for Halloween. He wants us to plan everything and if we need help we can talk to him but he doesn't want us to need him too much. He wants us to be responsible." Malfoy snorted at that. I glared at him before I slide closer to Padma. I put a piece of parchment on the table and took my quill. Pansy got off the chair and sat next to me on the couch. She actually sat next to me.
"It should be Halloween night. We could have it in the Great Hall, get rid of the tables and set it up like the Yule Ball," Hannah said. "We could get a DJ, a good one of course. The house elves could make some food and some punch."
"Everyone could dress up and oh it will be so much fun," Padma squealed. "And the Hogsmade trip is the weekend before so everyone can get dresses then."
"It should be a costume party. That way no one knows who each other is. It would prompt house unity since no one knows what house everyone is from," Malfoy said. Everyone's heads swiveled toward him. He was talking about the dance. He was talking about house unity. Who is he and what has he done to Draco Malfoy?
"I mean isn't that what you want Granger?" He asked with a raised eyebrow and a smirk. Malfoy's back.
"Okay so costume party in the Great Hall on Halloween night. We still have almost two months to plan so we can plan more later," I said. The girls seemed upset but the guys were relieved. We will talk about it sooner rather than later. I want everything planned in the next few days so that I don't have to worry about it.
"Third, graduation this year will be planned by us. We don't have to plan for a long time but Dumbledore wanted us to know. Fourth, to communicate with each other easily we have these." I pulled out eight shiny bracelets.
"They look like normal brackets but if you tap it with your wand you can send a message to each of us and the prefects. You can use it to tell us if you're going to be late, if you need someone to cover your patrol, or if there is big trouble somewhere. Do not overuse them or they will be confiscated."
I handed the bracelets out. The girls slipped them on and held their hands up. The silver looked good with their robes so they were fine with it. The guys were okay with them. They didn't look super girly so that was good. When I handed Malfoy his, my hand accidentally brushed his. He flinched, big time, and pulled his hand back. He put the bracelet on without looking up.
"Well final thing. Dumbledore would like me to tell you that he hopes this year is great. Good night everyone," I concluded. I took the pieces of parchment and put them in a pile.
Padma and Hannah walked to their rooms while examining the bracelet. Michael and Justin practically ran for their rooms. Neville hugged me good night before he left too. Malfoy and Pansy walked to Pansy's room. They were whispering. Malfoy kissed Pansy on the cheek before retreating to his room. Pansy saw me watching. She didn't say anything, just smiled a little and shut her door. Slytherin these days, so confusing.
I opened my doors and walked up the short flight of stairs. I put the pieces of parchment in a folder and put it on the desk in my room. I changed into my night clothes quickly, just some short shorts with a spaghetti strap tank top. I climbed into bed, under the warm red comforter.
I must have laid there for hours, unable to fall asleep. I finally got out of bed and slipped on a big sweatshirt. I needed to find some book to read. I forgot to get some earlier because Malfoy came.
I walked down the stairs to the door to the common room. I put my ear to the door to see if anyone was out there first. It was silent. Everyone must be in their rooms. I opened the door and silently made my way to the door.
Two lefts, a right, and down two flights of stairs. There is the library. It is always open, but after midnight you are supposed to go to your common room. It's definitely past midnight but I need a book to sleep.
I found one at last. It was a novel about a girl who finds herself in a different universe with a prince and a fairy to guide her. It is actually better than it sounds. I quietly walked back to my desk. Mine and Malfoy's. Why does that sound so weird?
I turned the corner of the bookshelf and stopped. Someone was sitting in the window seat. A certain blonde haired gray eyed boy. What was he doing here? What should I do now? I don't want to sit with him but I want to read my book by the window.
"Granger?" It came out as a whisper. I looked at him. He looked, kind of, handsome with the full moon behind him, lighting his features from the back.
