Fair warning: This is short. I haven't written a Harry Potter fic for months. But I hope you enjoy it anyway.
James and Lily sat around their kitchen table in Godric's Hollow. James had a glass of firewhiskey in front of him, but Lily had opted for only water.
"-can't believe how irresponsible, can you imagine? It's the middle of a war, how could they possibly care for a baby? The Longbottoms are the best fighters we've got, besides Dumbledore of course.."
Lily sighed as she took a sip of water. The war had put everyone in a bad mood, but James even more so than anyone else.
"What are they going to do, take the baby with them everywhere?" James finished his rant.
"I'm sure they think it's for the best," Lily tried to defend her friends.
"It's not for the best!" James snapped. "Can you imagine bringing a child into this horrible, messed up world? Raising them like that?"
Lily chewed on her bottom lip. "I just.. Never mind."
James's tone softened. "I mean, I love Frank and Alice. You know that, Lily. I just think that it's not the smartest thing in the world."
Lily found her voice. "I agree, but.." A fat tear rolled down her cheek and splashed onto the table.
"Lils, what's wrong?" James reached for Lily's hand across the table, concerned.
"Um.." One tear had turned into a flood of tears, and she buried her face in her arms.
"Lily, whatever it is, we can handle it," James laced his fingers with hers. "All right? No matter what happens, I will always love you."
"I'm, um.." Lily took a deep breath. "James, I'm pregnant."
He was silent for a long time.
"Please don't be mad," she begged.
James still didn't say a word. Lily realized his eyes were brimming with tears.
"James, I'm sorry." And then she was crying again.
"Lily. I meant it when I said that I would love you no matter what."
A faint smile crossed her lips.
"I won't pretend that I'm not terrified, but.. A real baby? Our very own baby?" James's face split open in a smile. "We always did want to start a family."
Lily's tears were tears of joy, and the couple clung to each other, weeping with happiness.
"Our very own baby," Lily repeated.
James leaned down to kiss her, running his hands across her belly. "I guess Frank and Alice had the right idea after all."
