Chapter 8

GSH...I'm back sooner than you thought aren't I. Hope you all are liking my improvements and advancements. So enjoy chapter 8.

Disclaimer: I do not own this fandom or any of it's characters. Except Eliza Heather Grissom.

Grissom turned over in his bed expecting to touch the warm body of Sara, but his hand hit the cold sheets instead. He shot up and squinted against the dark, hoping her shadow would be in the room. When only the thick shadows of his furniture formed, he tossed off the blankets and swung his legs over the side of the bed. He padded his way to the doorway and peered out into the the rest of the house. He saw the figures of Eliza and Hank cuddled on the couch, he traveled over to them and silently pulled the blanket over them. Hank lifted his head up and Grissom patted it. The dog immediately went back to sleep and Grissom continued his search for Sara. He noticed his balcony door was open and slipped out. Closing his robe against the cool early morning air, he saw her sitting up on the railing and closed the door. The click must have shook Sara from her thoughts, cause she turned to him. He could tell by the soft light of the sky that she had been crying. She took notice of his reaction and quickly turned away, swiping at her cheeks with her robe sleeve. Despite his urge to rush over, sweep her up in his arms and hold her tightly, he knew she needed some space. He carefully sat down in one of his porch chair, it creaked under his weight and he shifted uncomfortably. He cleared his throat.

"Sara," he began. "I know this is a lot to take in and your having a hard time. But I..."

"Please don't interrogate me Gil!" she interrupted.

They sat there in silence, the thump of the sleepless city and distant sirens sounding in the background.

"It's sad," Sara finally spoke.

"What is my dear?" he asked in a soothing tone.

She stared out over the roof tops towards the desert and then towards the city.

"How time can be washed away and forgotten. Like nothing ever happened." she solemnly hung her head.

"Nobody is forgotten when it is convenient to remember him." he quoted.

"Disraeli," she half smiled.

"Time is not forgotten Sara." he lightly cupped her knee.

"But it is," she explained. "Just in this city countless people die everyday, people are killed, injured, kidnapped.."

She paused a long minute, staring at the small hairline scars on her arm. He knew what this was about now. He lifted himself from his chair and surrounded her in his arms. She silently sobbed.

"Sara that is all over, you're safe, it's all okay..."

"But it's not," she pulled away from him. "This whole city is full of kidnappers, killers and rapists. Not to mention all the pedophiles. I needed out of the city and now you dragged back in. I thought of coming back so many times, Gil, I really did. But that night, our last night together. When you told me you weren't sure if you were ready to leave the gang yet. You needed sometime to think. That was when I needed you to be on my side, to let you know why I had to stay. But you kept telling me to come back with you, that things would be good. But they weren't going to be, they were just going to be worse. I told you if Vegas was more important then you should marry it. But then remembered you were already married to your job. And threw your ring at you and slammed the door."

He winced at the painful memory.

"I thought of coming back," she wiped tears away. "I thought of grabbing the first flight out and running back to you. Then I found out about Eliza, that I was expecting your sweet child. I was going to tell you, but then fear set in. Would you have even taken me back? But not only of that, I knew you couldn't leave CSI. And the thought's of all the killers and pedophiles, haunted my dreams. I couldn't, I just couldn't come back here. Not after me, not after what I'd been through. I couldn't let our baby grow up here, expose her to the harsh truth that was our life. I only kept her from you to protect her, I want you to know that. I didn't want her to end up like me, stuck in the middle of nowhere, struggling to simply breath."

He pulled her tightly into a hug and into the chair. Her soothed her hair and kissed her head. She convulsed in tears into his chest, and wrapped her arms around him.

"Sara," he hushed her lovingly. "I forgive you, I knew your reasons. But I promise you, no one will ever touch one hair on that little girls head. I will kill anyone who touches her. She's not going to end up in the desert. She's going to live, she's going to live just like you did. I wanted to turn around too, I wanted to come back wrap you up in my. I wanted to kiss you until you forgave me. But I was afraid you would never forgive me, you would pick up and move on. It took me six years to come back and see if you still needed me. I just couldn't leave the group, even though I wasn't part of the team anymore."

He took a deep breath, she had stopped sobbing and was leaning her head on his shoulder.

"I'm scared, I know you are too." he continued. "I can't imagine spending six years raising her by yourself. I'm afraid, Sara, I don't know what kind of dad I'm going to be. I just want to be there."

She kissed him gently on the lips. "You will be. Trust me, I know you will."

The two sat there curled up on the chair for a while, watching the sky turn lighter and lighter.

"Sara," he broke the silence. "Are you afraid about later?"

"Extremely," she admitted, sitting on the end of the chair.

"Why?" he asked.

"I'm not exactly in the best position," she began. "I left without saying goodbye to anyone. All anyone knows is what you have told them. But that was six years ago, and now all of a sudden we have a daughter you didn't know about. I feel like I betrayed them. I'm probably already number one on Catherine's list, now even more."

"They know I saw Eliza, they don't know anything else yet." he rubbed her back.

"When did you tell them?" she glanced over her shoulder.

"The first day, I came to your door." he began, messaging her shoulders. "I was expecting to see you, but then a little girl answered. I was confused, my mind was going wild. She looked like you, and I only assumed you had moved on with someone else. Then I saw her eyes, the same ones I see in the mirror. I went back to my hotel and called Catherine. The entire gang was at her place and I told them I thought I saw my daughter."

"Why didn't you tell me?" she asked.

"Everything has been buzzing by, I got so caught up in what has happening here. I'm sorry, I should have told you." he apologized, rest his forehead on her back.

"It's okay, so they know?" she pet his beard.

"Not really," He admitted. "They know I saw her, they don't know she's actually mine. I was pretty positive, but I haven't gotten back to them."

She gave him a half hearted look and got up to stretch.

"Sara, they aren't going to hate you." he glanced to her.

"How do you know?" she replied, pacing. "You haven't spoken to them, do they even know we're coming? Catherine used to give me a hard time when I questioned her on parenting. She always told me when I was a parent I'd understand. But she's your best friend Gil, she'd search the country if anything happened to you. How is she going to react to the fact that, I had a part of you hidden away. She's going to skin me alive."

"Question 8," he stood up.

She gave him a nod of approval.

"Do you wanna go back?" he asked, staring into her eyes.

She stood there a minute slightly dumbfounded. She thought for a moment, was he actually giving her the choice. The silence between them was tense, she stared into his eyes. Then she immediately thought of there daughter, sleeping soundly inside. How she could just tear her away from this, from their life.

"No," she smiled. "Not at all."
