Author's Note: Hey, I was wondering if anyone wanted to make a cover picture for the story? I'm not creative when it comes to that kind of stuff, and I would love to see what you guys want to do! Thank you so much and I hope you enjoy the chapter!
"North is not going to be happy when he sees this," Bunny muttered behind the two Jacks. Brulant stared into Frost's eyes, mesmerized by the sheer blue of them. He could have sworn at that moment that his eyes were made of millions of tiny snowflakes, but that would have just made him sound all emotional, and he really did not need that right now.
"So, uh, what now?" Frost asked, beginning to feel uncomfortable in Brulant's unblinking gaze. Brulant snapped out of it and pushed himself from the ground. He leaned down and helped up his counterpart. They stood, side by side, facing a stunned Bunny.
"What was that you said about North?" Brulant asked, snapping Bunny out of his trance.
"Uh, yeah. Right. Okay. North Pole. And no arguing, kid. That's where we're going, understood?"
"I'm not going to argue at this point. But, can we take your tunnels there?"
"Yeah, sure thing," Bunny smirked and stomped twice on the ground, opening a tunnel and hopping through. The Jacks followed quickly behind.
"So, this is… what I look like? Never really, uh, got a really good view before. Kind of…"
"…Awkward." Brulant supplied as he walked along beside his opposite.
"Shouldn't there be some sort of-"
"-time rift or black hole-"
"-from us being in the same place?"
Bunny stared back at the two, his face contorted in a mix of confusion and genuine amusement. It's not every day that he gets to meet his friend's opposite, and seeing them so alike almost terrified Bunny, but the sheer absurdity of the whole situation made Bunny want to laugh until everything made sense again. Although, Bunny was not about to comment on the absurd, especially after all of his escapades traveling through time and space when he was younger. So, after everything, Bunny felt like he was dealing with this quite well.
"Yeah! I thought so too! Although, I'm not seeing how melting the polar icecaps is going to solve that problem. I always thought that freezing them would help out all the little penguins and stuff. Not that I, you know, find them cute or anything," Jack blushed and put his hand through his hair, and stared forward.
"Yeah, but if you think about it, surly it's gotta be too cold for them up there. I mean, the climate is for them, but penguins live on beaches too. They like it warm. They only reason they stay up there is beca-"
"We're here," Bunny cut in, not caring to hear what Brulant was about to say. Bunny climbed out of his tunnel, and hefted to two boys up and out of the ground behind him. The two seemed to be sporting the same limp, Bunny had also noticed while walking, and it unnerved him. They might be the same person, but the same entity? Bunny shook his head, the whole of the situation causing his head to pulse to a slow rhythm that seemed to match the steady work of elves and yetis around them.
"Workshop looks the same," Frost commented, and Brulant began anxiously tapping his foot, hoping that whatever they needed to do here, they could get it over with quickly. Frost noticed this, feeling the anxiety radiating from him, and gently grabbed his shoulder.
"Hey, it's fine. I'm sure North has figured out what is wrong already. He's good with that… magic and stuff," Frost reassured, but that did not help with Brulant's frayed nerves. Jack yelped, and pulled back his hand from Brulant's shoulder. Brulant stopped his thoughtful internal rampage of how much he hated being there and turned to Jack, a sudden frown on his face.
"Sorry…" Brualant breathed, watching Jack as he nursed his shocked hand, "We probably shouldn't touch. Too much, uh, power in one area or something like that." Frost nodded and took a step back, letting his hands fall to his sides and watching as a few yetis came over to them.
"Ah, did you find North?" Bunny asked, and the yetis gestured for the trio to follow them. Bunny set off right after them, and the Jacks set a pace not too far behind, but also keeping a good few feet from each other as well.
They finally made it to a room a few minutes later. The walls were covered in books and bottles, and the floor had a few stray feathers on it, from what looked like owls. Rather large owls, Frost thought as he stepped into the dim room behind Brulant and Bunny, to find North silently reading in a corner with a bottle of some strange liquid next to him.
"So glad you could make it," North stated, never looking up from his book. He wrote a few things down on the page, then shut the book, causing dust to fly up from the table. His eyes lit up when he finally turned to face the three, and a smile spread across his face.
"Hey North," Frost said nonchalantly, leaning back against the door sill. North stared back at the black sheep among them and his smile faltered for a moment.
"And you are..." North prompted, although already had an inkling of what was going on.
"My name is Jack Frost. I'm from another parallel world… I guess," Frost shrugged. "You can call me Frost. That's what my lovely counterpart has taken the liberty to call me. In return, though, he's Brulant until we get this whole ordeal situated." North was nodding before Frost could finish.
"I think is great idea. No need to confuse two Jacks. So, this is what potion did, hmm? I have been researching on what side effects could occur," North explained as he leafed through a few pages of a book that was lying on top of a pile of other old books. "It had not been tested, so I had no idea what would happen. Is good to know that it is not deadly."
"That's super uplifting and all, but I think we still have a problem," Brulant said, gesturing to Frost. Frost eyed him for a moment, not letting an emotion slip onto his face, but he was not enjoying being referred to as a problem.
"I see. Is problem. Having one Jack was bad enough, now two?" North shook his head.
"North, have you found anything out that could help us?" Bunny cut in, becoming frustrated of North's dancing around the subject.
"Ah, yes," North picked up the small bottle of liquid that was beside the book he had been reading. "It is said in book that it is possible to travel between parallel universes. This is potion that can do just that. Or, I think it is…" North began stroking his beard, eyeing the small bottle and turning it slowly in front of him, watching the dim light bounce from the bottle and through the liquid. After a minute of silence, North stood from his seat, put the potion in his pocket, and clapped his hands together.
"I think is time for snack, yes? We will talk everything over. Jacks, tell me everything you know. Every detail will help." And with that, North walked out of the room, not waiting for the others to follow, but knowing that they would regardless.
"...and then Bunny took us here to the workshop," Frost finished, then sipped at the cool cocoa in his hands. Brulant sat in front of the fire and sighed, enjoying the heat and making the flames dance a little. He did not had power over fire, but he could manipulate heat. It took Jack years to figure out how to cause the flames to finally obey him, if only a little.
"So, any thoughts?" Bunny asked, munching quietly on a cookie and leaning back into the couch. North stared at the fire, and Brulant, and sighed.
"It is good to know all information, and I do believe that what I have is answer. But, is dangerous. Only used once, and it was very risky. I am not willing to take such risk if not necessary." Brulant let go his attention to the flames and stood abruptly, surprising the other three in the room.
"Look, whether or not it's risky is not going to stop us. This is your fault in the first place. I… we need you to fix this. If you believe that potion is the only way out, then fine, but don't go around saying that it's your choice, because it's not. It's ours," Brulant's words were tense, the air in the room rising a few more degrees and causing Frost to stir uncomfortably.
"Sunburn here is right," Frost said, standing up to face North and Bunny, "This is our decision. Let us think it over for a bit." The tension in the room was finally broken and North nodded slowly.
"One hour. Come back in one hour. We will be waiting," North said, then waved the two boys off to think.
"So, what do you think?"
"Probably the same thing you are."
"Well, you first, then."
Brulant gave a slow sigh and sat back against the warm wood of the wall. "I don't know. I mean, I was thinking that maybe you could stay, but then I thought about your world. What would happen to the climate if Jack Frost were to suddenly vanish off of the face of the Earth? Well, his Earth? Can't be good. Probably the same thing that would happen if I had left mine."
"That's why North wants to get this over with as soon as possible. And if Mother Nature finds out…"
"Then we are all in big trouble. Funny thing is? I was sent on the task of finding a new Spirit of Winter. I find one that I like and I can't keep him."
"I'm not a stray dog, you know," Frost huffed and leaned back against the window behind him.
"Yeah, but think of the power we could have?"
"Haven't we already been over this?"
"Not necessarily. We could just pretend that it never occurred to us. Plus, Mother Nature would have it coming."
"I am not going to be used for revenge, of all things."
"No, not revenge, just a bit of payback."
"It's the same thing."
"Not if you ask Bunny."
Frost closed his eyes, suddenly feeling very tried from the whole ordeal.
"How could this have even happened? I mean, I was just out doing my stuff; making it snow, frosting windows, the usual."
"That was my fault. I guess we never went over this part. I thought you just figured it out from being inside of my head."
"I promised not to spy, and I keep my promises."
"Well, you might be better than me. But, I had an accident and one of North's potions fell on me. Sounds too simple for it to have caused something like this."
"Yeah, I agree, but what-" Frost stumbled forward as a rumble emanated through the building.
"What was-" But Frost was confused when he realized Brulant was staring at something behind him, instead of at him. Frost turned and backed away from the window as thin green vines snaked their way up in a slow climb.
"Wh…what?" Frost asked, completely confused and a bit stunned, but Brulant sighed and stood up.
"I don't know why she is here, but she needs to leave. This is none of her business," Brulant mumbled angrily to himself, then turned and walked out of the room, heading for North's office, where he knew he would find North and his sudden guest.
"Who? Who is that? I've never… I mean…" Jack tried to compose himself, but his heart was still hammering in is chest from the surprise of finding anything green growing outside of the workshop. Brulant ignored Jack, his anger beginning to bubble into a physical heat that was radiating off of him in slow waves. Frost grabbed his shoulder and turned him around.
"Who is it?" Frost demanded, and flinched when he saw the slow fire burning in Brulant's auburn eyes.
"Mother Nature."
