Author's Note: Hi everyone! Yes I missed last week and I am so sorry! My only excuse is that I had an exam and didn't type this chapter up until last night! It is also a bit on the short side but this chapter was too heartbreaking and I found myself blocked to the extreme! But hope you enjoy!
Arya walked out into the cool air and felt the sun on her face. Taking a deep breath, she put aside a moment to enjoy this warm, southern winter before going North. They had spent the morning organizing carriages and recruiting more travelers for the caravan. It was nearly noon and Arya couldn't say she would very much miss Kings Landing.
After the incident with Jon and that Queen, two days prior, Arya thought it best to leave as soon as possible. No matter if what Daenerys said was true or false, Jon was Arya's brother and they would always be close to one another. No matter what some Khaleesi said.
Tyrion and Gendry had come to see them off. Sansa decided to bring little Robb along so the boy could meet his uncle. While Arya sensed that her newest brother did not like the idea of Sansa being away,he had given his consent to the journey. Arya had to admit she would miss the imp. Tyrion brought humor and logic to the table in ways she did not know possible.
Seeing the time, Arya left her thoughts where she stood and moved to join the group at the city gates. She gave a loving goodbye to Tyrion and promised to look after Robb and Sansa for him.
When the time came for Arya to say goodbye to Gendry, she wanted to hop on her horse and run. However, she walked up to him and gave a small bow and a whispered farewell. As she turned to leave, Gendry reached for her wrist and his hand closed from tip to tip, "Can I not- Please Arya, change your mind. I-, the realm needs you. Reconsider?" the young king pleaded.
"My statement still stands, your grace." she said, pulling her arm from beneath the grasp. A final glance at Sansa hugging Gendry and kissing Tyrion, and Arya mounted her horse, never to return.
"Reconsider?" Gendry begged. Arya pulled away and Gendry felt as thought the all air had been pulled from his lungs. How could the grieving young girl he once knew be this creature of stone that had planned Gendry's demise? It seemed impossible.
Gendry hated being King. Five Kingdoms that he can do what he pleases with but he can't order a girl to stay with him? The gods were cruel. Gendry wanted Arya's love but not like that.
"Don't lose it. Not here." Jon reminded as the bastards embraced. "And do not let that queen manipulate you either, you hear?" Gendry nodded his head and Snow released him. There was a small tear threatening to make an appearance and Gendry pushed it down.
Sansa's goodbye came next. She bowed as a lady should before throwing her arms around Gendry's neck. "Will you work on her for me?" he asked. Sansa brought her hand to his cheek.
"You brought Arya back to me, and I will return you to her. Even if it takes three winters!" she laughed. Gendry gave Sansa a wink and she climbed into her carriage.
Much to Gendry's surprise, just as the caravan started leaving, Nymeria lept to Gendry's side. He knelt down and pet the direwolf's ears. "I can't make you stay, girl. We will see each other again. Now go." he ordered and the wolf ran back to her owner.
As he watched them leave, the cold started seeping into Gendry's skin and it let out a shiver. Tyrion put a hand on Gendry's elbow, "It is not easy, being apart from the ones we love, but it does make us two times more appreciative when they return to us." he reassured Gendry.
"I suppose, however it does nothing to dull the pain while they're gone. Tyrion, I love her." Gendry exhaled, shocked at his own realization of his feelings. "After she poisoned me, I never thought I'd feel anything for Arya again. The plan was to come home, deal with the Targaryen and watch Arya go back to where belonged. I didn't know it would hurt this much. Then I kissed her!" he gave out a wry laugh, "My second mistake."
Tyrion said nothing for a long while, quietly watching the horizon. Gendry turned to leave and Tyrion finally spoke up. "You truly are a fool boy."
"Excuse me?" Gendry asked, facing his friend and adviser.
"You heard me. There was a time when you thought Arya was dead and you retreated so far into yourself, I wasn't entirely sure you would come back out again. The real you I mean. Not some depressed version of you that drank as heavily as your father before you and made cowardly decisions. I have seen your eyes since that girl came back, and they have depth to them again. Your second mistake, was assuming Arya would be the same girl you knew in your youth. So shutup, and start acting like a fucking king worthy of that Lady's affections." Tyrion finished.
Leaving Gendry to think on his own, Tyrion returned to the tower of the hand. Te imp was right. Gendry needed to stop thinking like a bastard and start thinking like the king he was born to be.
