Last time: He had to give Dr. Rosen the case folder in the loony bin. Clay had no idea how to move forward with the case, but he would bet his bottom dollar that the doctor did.
Dr. Rosen looked up in surprise at the announcement that he had a visitor. Nobody had been to visit him in the three months that he'd been in the clinic and he didn't see why they would start now.
Out in the courtyard, Clay sat on a stone bench with a folder in his hands, looking dramatically out of place in a work suit. Dr. Rosen sat down next to him. "What can I do for you, Nathan?"
"We have an alpha that's giving us more trouble than we expected. She's escaped from our custody three times and hurt several people in the process."
"How did she escape?"
"The first time, she set two people on fire in Binghamton and hotwired a car. The second time, she jumped out of a moving vehicle, and the last time, she burned herself in an effort to get away, but when confronted by Rachel, she shoved Rachel and ran."
Dr. Rosen frowned. "Who is she?"
Clay passed him the folder. "Her name is Kira Monroe. She's sixteen."
Dr. Rosen stiffened as he heard the name. A look at the picture of the girl in question and he sighed and put his head in his hands. Clay gave him a cautious look. "Something wrong, Doc?"
"Kira Monroe is my niece. I didn't know she was an alpha, but I should have. Her parents- my sister and brother-in-law- went out for a date night three years ago. Kira begged and pleaded with them not to go. She said she thought something bad might happen to them. They chalked it up to the horror movie they had seen the night before and left anyway. The got into a car accident and didn't make it."
Clay looked confused. "Monroe's ability to set fire with her mind and hands. It has nothing to do with what you're talking about."
Dr. Rosen looked somewhat puzzled before turning back to the folder. "Did you do a brain scan on Kira?"
"Yeah, we always do. Why?"
Finding the scan in the folder, Dr. Rosen studied it and smiled. "I think we just found an alpha with two abilities."
Clay's eyebrows rose. "What?"
"I think Kira has two abilities. Her prefrontal cortex has developed strangely-that explains her first ability-and from what you tell me, she can set fires, so she must have two abilities."
"What exactly does the prefrontal cortex do?"
"It helps us with making choices and with telling the difference between right and wrong. That's how she knew that her parents were going to be in a car accident. That's how she keeps getting away from you."
"But why can we keep catching her?"
"She must not be at all aware of her second ability, probably too shocked with you and the others hunting her. She doesn't know that she can use it. Only that something tells her to do things. I don't see why she's hurting so many people, though. She was such a sweet child." He cast a wary look at Clay. "What exactly happened at Binghamton? What aren't you telling me?"
Clay looked away for a moment and sighed. "The doctors were testing her ability and they used some methods that the higher-ups approved, but I didn't authorize."
"And what were those methods?"
"They used electroshock therapy in an attempt to get her ability to activate."
Dr. Rosen suddenly looked angry. "Well, it's no wonder she keeps trying to escape and hurts people in the process. She's a girl that's scared and you treated her like an animal!"
"I suppose now would be a bad time to mention that to prevent her from escaping, we chained her with her hand to her chest and that she burned herself to get out."
Dr. Rosen glared. "Yes, it would be."
"Are you going to help us find her or not?"
"I'm just a crazy old man. I can't help you or anyone else. If you were to send someone who didn't torture a member of my family, I might me more likely to help, but to you, I say no."
I pulled the first aid kit off the shelf and was rolling gauze around that gash on my leg when the door opened. I waved my hand towards the candle on the table for more light and glared at Liam as he entered to room. I smirked at the shocked look on his face. "Bet you weren't expecting me, huh? Well, this was the only place I could get into without anyone knowing and I needed supplies."
"Why are acting this way? You weren't like this before."
"Before, I wasn't betrayed by someone who said they were going to help me. Before, I didn't jump out of a moving vehicle. Before, I didn't get chained up like a pig on the chopping block. And before, I most definitely didn't have a hand-shaped burn mark on my chest. So, yeah, I'm different now."
Liam gulped audibly. "Are you going to kill me?"
"Naw, killing's not my thing. If you try and sic the cops on me again, I may defend myself, but otherwise, I'll leave you alone."
"But you killed those other people. The people you escaped from."
The gauze I was holding lit from my irritation. "Now look what you did. I didn't kill anyone. The news exaggerated. Even the people who caught up to me admitted that. They were talking about it outside my room." I pulled another pack of gauze and some burn cream from the kit. I looked at Liam. "You want to give a girl some privacy? I do need to take off my shirt to treat the burn."
Liam glared at me. "How do I know that you won't try to pull something while my back is turned?"
I rolled my eyes. "Fine, don't turn." I grimaced as I pulled off my shirt and heard Liam suck in a breath. The burn mark on the left side of my chest was an angry and inflamed red. As I applied the ointment, I winced and after a moment, the jar was taken from my hands and cool finders gently added another layer of cream to the burn. Liam taped gauze over the burn and I gave him a tired look. "Why are you doing this?"
Liam shrugged. "I'm still trying to figure you out. I only turned you in because I thought you had lied to me and killed someone. They said they wouldn't hurt you, so I thought that letting them take you would be the better path. They were supposed to help you."
"They didn't. I need to get going now. I have a few people that I need to talk to before I go-I don't where I'm going to go. I'm just going."
I turned and left his house without looking back. Something told me that he meant well, but I ignored it this time. I couldn't deal with anymore heartache.
A/N: I know I changed Kira a lot in this chapter, but I thought it was about time she grew a backbone given all that has happened. Reviews are welcome.
