Alright, it's the moment you've all been waiting for.
It's time for Rick to...
Meet the Beckett's!
Kate was awoken form her sleep by the honk of a horn. It was loud and obnoxious and interrupted the amazing silence around her, but she was glad to see what she had been awoken to and her Dad confirmed it. They had arrived at their family's private cabin. She stretched herself and only then noticed her boyfriend's lolling head on her shoulder. She shook him gently and alerted him that they were here, then quickly jumped out of the car. After grabbing their bags, they all began to make their way up the dirt road and into the cabin. Rick looked around, half in amazement, half in confusion. Kate walked up beside him and intertwined their hands.
"You ok?"
"Yeah, it's just; it's kind of empty up here. Where's the barrage of relatives?" She chuckled.
"Firstly, it won't really be that many. Probably about 2 or 3 people in every family. & families tops. Secondly, they'll all have separate cabins from us. This one is specifically ours."
He smiled at that fact. At least there would be some peace on this trip.
Once inside they made their way to the center of the living area. Rick couldn't believe his eyes. He was truly amazed by all the rustic beauty and authenticity of the place.
"Okay, so," Jim started "Johanna and I will be up on the third floor. You and Katie may have the second. There are a couple rooms there so take your pick. And just know," he stepped infinitely close to Rick's face "my hunting gear and I are only one floor away."
Rick swallowed visibly and everyone around him laughed. After her parents had made their way upstairs, Kate and Rick had trailed slowly behind.
Kate had her room at the end of the hall on the second floor and Rick kept to himself in the next room over.
While packing their things away, they both had the same though:
This would definitely be a weekend to remember.
After changing, Rick met Kate in the common are of the second floor. There were faint noises
from outside that alerted them of the family arrival. Rick threw on his best jeans with a white t-shirt and his "all terrain" boots that Kate had bought him. Meanwhile, she wore a purple tank top, a pair of skinny jeans and her matching "all terrain" boots.
"You ready?"
"Nope, but it's now or never."
"Alright, big baby, how about this. You hold my hand and I won't let go. Every time you get overwhelmed, just give my hand a little squeeze and I'll help you out."
"Okay," he grabs her hand and entwines their fingers "thanks."
"Now problem, now," she pecks his lips "let's do this."
Rick wakes up in the morning with a jolt. He's extremely excited. He's spent 6 days with the entirety of Beckett's and they were all glorious. He thinks back over the week while he gets dressed. He marvels in the fact that everyone loves him.
That first day, he had only had to squeeze Kate's hand once. All of her relatives were so welcoming. Her guy cousins loved his strength. He helped them win quite a lot of football games and there was always a fight about whose team he got to be on. Now and then they'd read him the "don't hurt our Katie" act, but other than that, they were the best of friends.
The girls were a bit of a challenge. They were always extremely jealous of Kate and having Rick around did nothing to defuse the situation. Quite a lot, he and Kate had ended up "accidentally" separated and he found himself in the company of a different girl. This routine stuck for two days until they saw that Rick was unbreakable, that he was a faithful guy (which only made him more desirable). Soon after, they warmed right up to him and found his love for Kate adorable.
The kids were probably the easiest to get. They all fell in complete love with Rick. They'd play pirates in the forest with him, revel in his night time stories, and use his height for the best piggy back rides in the world.
The adults took the most liking to him. The males respected him and often commented on his manners or firm handshake or even his steady throwing arm. The females found him adorable and marveled at his relationship with "their little Katie bug." All around, it was a great week and they were ending it off with a bang. Literally.
Today was the last day and tradition said that all the women and children would have a party while the men and older boys went out and had target practice in the woods. After, the men would come back and set up a firework display that they would all enjoy from the front lawn. Rick had just finished getting dressed in a hunting jacket he borrowed, a pair of jeans, and his boots. He turned around to see Kate eyeing him form the doorway.
"Hey handsome."
"Hey," he kissed her "why are you dressed like that?"
He looked at her. She wore an outfit almost identical to his, except hers looked way better.
"Oh, I forgot to tell you. Whenever a Beckett girl brings a guy to the hunt, it's tradition that they go along, so I'll be going with you today."
"Whew," he wiped away an imaginary sweat bead "good, because I don't think I feel safe around your dad and his 'hunting gear' when you're not around." She chuckled.
"I'm serious! What if he was to shoot off one of my more… important bits." He stated looking down. The smile immediately dropped off her face.
"Yeah, probably not a good idea to stand too close to him."
They had finally reached their spot. The men started unloading the guns and Rick was making small talk with a few of the guys. Everyone received their gun while Rick was talking to Kate.
"Alright, so I think, as our guest, Rick should take the first shot."
Rick turned around at the mention of his name and found the barrel of a Westchester model 70 in his face. He instinctively stuck his hands up and everyone around him chuckled.
"Take it." Kate's cousin Bobby said. Bobby was probably the only guy there who was still a bit iffy about him and constantly tried to show him up.
"Okay." Rick took the gun and pointed it expertly. He then proceeded to knock three cans down in a row. Everyone applauded (except Bobby) and Rick lowered the gun.
"Wow, Rick! That's some mighty fine aiming you just pulled. I think we might have our champion marksman right here!" Kate's Uncle Troy said.
"Thank you, sir," Rick said and he glanced at Kate who threw him a saucy wink.
"Well," Bobby spoke up "if he's such a good marksman, why don't we try some real game."
"Uh…" Rick was an excellent marksman, but he was strictly against hunting and killing innocent animals "I don't really do that."
"Oh come on. Just show him up a bit." Jim said and a few murmurs of agreement could be heard.
"Alright, I uh I guess I could give it a try."
"Right there. Blue jay in the tree." Bobby said and pushed the gun into Rick's hands.
"Whew. Okay." Rick aimed the gun. He could see the blue jay and had a perfect aim. He could also see the mixed expression form Kate. His finger trembled on the trigger. He began to pull back, but he closed his eyes and his grip slipped with all the sweat seeping through his gloves. He was thrown back on the ground by the force and everyone burst into laughter except Kate, who ran to his side.
Bobby howled out the loudest. "What's the matter, new guy? Didn't your Daddy teach you how to hunt?" Suddenly, Rick, Jim, and Kate went stone quiet. The others calmed their laughter and looked at the three in confusion. Rick's face turned tomato red and he bolted away from the group with Kate on his heels.
Jim glared at Bobby. "What what'd I say?"
"He doesn't have a father Bobby and it would do you good to keep out of other people's business!" In with that Jim took off in search of Rick, leaving poor little Jim to the wrath of his family.
After finally packing up and talking Rick down form the tree he'd climbed into, the group headed back to the cabin to begin the fireworks. It was a silent ride and Kate's hand never left Rick's the entire time.
He stayed silent the entire night and he and Kate lay together and watched the fireworks. She kissed him goodnight and went to pack her things. On his way to his room, Rick got a couple of back pats and an 'I'm really sorry' form Bobby. He really couldn't wait to get away from that guy.
