Edward was immersed in meditation when the proverbial turd storm hit the windmill. He was deep into Earth chakra breathing, allowing his mind to run free. He pondered over what he'd read in Armin's textbook. Suddenly the ground shook beneath him. Though he clearly felt it, it still took him long moments to rouse himself out of his trance.
Edward flowed up from the floor to his feet, like water in human form. "It couldn't be..." He said.
He bent his knees and leapt to the top of the balcony in a single smooth motion, quickly racing down a passageway, up some stairs and to the roof. He stood in shock upon the rooftop staring off into the distance. There he had a clear line of sight and could see the billowing smoke from beyond the wall. There was no doubt about what he'd felt, a vast sudden buildup of pressure in his skull. Chakra
He activated his doryoku and trained his gaze at Wall Maria. Edward Elric gasped, a sudden loud involuntary intake of breath that threatened to strangle in his throat. He could not believe his eyes. Beyond the great wall stood a gigantic flayed humanoid gripping the top of the wall with smoky steam billowing from its body. Its hideous visage raised above the wall for all to see.
As Ed watched in horror, the creature cocked its foot back and savagely kicked Wall Maria's front gate. It literally exploded under the massive force. Shards of stone streaked across the sky, smashing into buildings. One of the shards hurtled directly at Ed and his new-found abode.
"Shit! Hell no!" Shunshin.
Edward streaked through the air to intercept the shard of stone careening towards him. "Fūton: Shinkū Taigyoku!" he exhaled. And a huge burst of wind chakra slammed into the fragment, pulverizing it into dust that quickly dispersed on the breeze. Ed landed on a nearby rooftop. Once again he trained his eyes on the frightening entity beyond the destroyed gate. Its bitter business finished, the hulking creature vanished right before Edward's eyes. The cloud of steam distorting his line of sight.
When it cleared, Edward did a double take. Large chunks of what to Ed's eyes looked like human shaped chakra forms, not nearly as big as the first, but still much larger than a human were pouring in through the gaping hole in Wall Maria. He stood horrified as people ran screaming for their lives and the giants scooped them up and devoured the hapless victims by the dozens.
His eyes wide, he exclaimed, "Holy shit... the kids!"
Edward Elric's form blurred across the rooftops.
"Get the hell outta here!" Someone shouted.
Another screamed, "They're coming! The titans are coming!"
Eren tore off back the way they'd come and bent a corner. Mikasa streaked off after him with Armin lagging behind. "Eren!" he called.
Eren didn't slow down. Surprisingly he was beating Mikasa as he rushed along the city streets. "The gate debris! There were houses where they hit. My neighborhood!" His heart hammered in his chest as he scampered along. "Mom!" he shouted. "I'm coming!"
Armin fell further and further behind. Together they hurtled past the buildings. They passed by destroyed buildings from where debris landed. Armin slowed to a stop and looked on in horror as they receded in the distance. They'd passed by victims laying in bloody smears beneath fragments of stone. Eren oblivious and Mikasa observant, but seemingly emotionally immune to the carnage. Armin shouted after them, as they disappeared, "It's over! An endless stream of titans will come! There's no stopping them! They'll destroy everything!" He shouted.
He was trembling, paralyzed in abject terror. He had to do something, but what? What could he do against this calamity? What could he do to help his friends? Or Humanity? He couldn't even help himself.
"Armin!"
Jolted out of his reverie, he jerked toward the call of his name and spied a figure dropping down to street level about a block away. The figure became clear as he ran towards him. "Hannes?!"
Meanwhile, his two friends rounded the corner to their street, Eren murmuring to himself all the way, "please, please, not my house, not my house." Eren's breath came in tortured gasps as he flung himself headlong down the road with Mikasa hot on his heels. He skidded to a stop in the middle of the street.
Mikasa almost crashed into him, but somehow managed to stop in time. "What?" She said.
To their horror, the Yeager house lay in ruins. Eren ran towards the dilapidated rubble, reaching it quickly and tearing the splintered door off the crumpled frame. Mikasa beside him, he started furiously sifting through the rubble, screaming for his mother. He found her barely conscious beneath some broken boards and a pillar of the house foundation. "Help me, Mikasa!"
Frantically they tried over and over to move the pillar pinning her to the ground. They couldn't; it was just too heavy.
The ground starting rumbling. An inhuman growl pierced their eardrums. Their eyes flew open even wider. They glanced toward the distorted front window frame and saw two hulking giants lumbering down nearby streets, towering over the buildings there. "Hurry!" Eren said with urgency, much quieter than he had before. "We have to hurry!"
Mrs. Yeager groaned as the pillar shifted ever so slightly due to the efforts of the children. "They're here, aren't they?"
"Hush, mom. We'll get you out of here! I promise!"
"Eren... you have to go. Take Mikasa and run away from here!"
"NO! Mom, we can save you! Help me, Mikasa. PUSH!" They struggled valiantly to no avail. The pillar wouldn't budge.
"Listen to me! I can't feel my legs; they're crushed. I can't run anyway. You have to get out of here! They're coming!"
Tears were streaming down his face. His body quaked with the effort of his struggle. "Mikasa, do something! Can't you do something? You're strong... stronger than anyone!"
She just shook her head, murmuring incoherently, as the ground started rumbling, subtly at first, then growing stronger with each second. Something was coming. They all stared through the broken wall of the rubble. A huge titan was coming down their home street towards them, grinning ear to ear with a gruesome expression. Its gaze swept over the rubble as it swelled in their sights.
Frantically the children redoubled their efforts to save Eren's mom. She even more frantic wailed to them, "Please! Listen to me! Why won't you listen?! We're all going to die if you don't leave me! You have to leave me!"
They heard a thump and glanced up the opposite end of the street and saw Hannes, a family friend and member of the Scouting Legion, rushing towards them. He passed the rubble barely sparing them a glance as he rushed past. He tore his sword from its scabbard, preparing to do battle with the approaching creature.
"Hanneth!" Mrs. Yeager screamed. "Don't fight that thing! Get my babies out of here! I beg you! Hannes!"
Hannes kept running. "What must you think of me, Carla? I'm not a coward! This is my chance to repay Mr. Yeager. I'll kill that fucking thing and save you all!" Hannes released his gear and a cord shot out and embedded in a building up the street, yanking his body airborne. His gas canisters accelerated him rapidly in a slanted arc towards the beast. Unfortunately, not fast enough.
The creature's hand shot out at inhuman speeds and snatched the zip line out the air, yanking Hannes like an overgrown yo-yo into its waiting palm. With a clap it snatched him out of the air and brought him close to its face, yawning its mouth wide. Hannes screamed as the teeth closed on his torso. Blood spurted everywhere, accompanied with a sickening crunch. It swallowed Hanneth's remains with a loud gulp.
Eren, Mikasa, and Carla stared on in horror. Carla desperately tried to shoo her children away as the creature started towards them again. In mere moments it was standing right outside. It casually reached down and pushed the rubble to the side, inadvertently freeing Mrs. Yeager. All three of them were petrified. Mrs. Yeager crawled towards her children, trying to shield them from the monster as it reached for them.
She managed to push Eren and Mikasa out of the way as it grabbed her and hoisted her towards its gaping maw. She struggled in a frenzy, shouting obscenities, terror and hatred plastered all over her face. The beast cocked its head sideways in a pregnant pause, almost as if it understood her. Then it simply squeezed its hand. Bones fractured and tissues ruptured all over her body and she went limp. The creature plopped her into its mouth like a much appreciated throat lozenge and bit down with a loud chomp.
Something hit the ground in front of Eren and he glanced down involuntarily. His mom's sandals, her pretty feet still in them lay there. Her legs had been severed at the shin bone. Eren and Mikasa screamed. They could not move, looking on in terror, as the beast reached towards them.
Suddenly, the upper half of its head just disappeared. Later when they would replay it they'd realize that something had blurred across their field of view so fast it was almost unseen and took the creature's skull off. But for now it simply looked as if it's head was there one minute and gone the next. Steam shot up from the stump and its body stumbled backwards and fell into a house across the street.
"Not on my watch, motherfucker!" They heard.
They looked to the sound of the voice; the youthful looking man with long white hair stood on a building half a block away. "Edward!" They both shouted. He glanced towards the house then... disappeared. Moments later he was standing beside them shoving rubble out of the way and lifting them to their feet.
The ground started rumbling. Something else was coming. "We have to go now. Those things are drawn to my chakra."
"Wait!" Eren shouted. "We have to get my mom! That thing swallowed her up! You have to save her!"
The rumble grew louder. They heard a monstrous groan as the area grew saturated with steam. Edward spared a glance towards the noise. The head of the titan he'd decapitated was growing back before their very eyes. One of its eyes regenerated and swiveled to meet their gaze. It struggled to rise out of the rubble of the house it landed on.
"Shit." Ed said.
That rumbling had grown much louder as he clapped his hands together and slammed them on the ground. Once again electricity crackled and nearby structures stretched and yawned, bending themselves to his will. Tentacles of mason-work reached out of the cobblestone road and the brick buildings, wrapping themselves around the limbs and torso of the creature, completely immobilizing it, even as it finished repairing the damage to its forehead in a burst of steam.
Half a dozen titans rounded the corner in a dead sprint, thundering the ground as if all the denizens of hell had made a prison break. The enormous strides of their absurdly elongated legs devoured the distance between them, like carnivorous yard sticks.
Without a backwards glance, Ed scooped the children up in his arms and vaulted to a nearby roof. His speed was inhuman. The children couldn't follow his movements. They blinked tears away at the wind rushing against their faces.
"What are you doing?!" Eren shouted, beating Ed about his head an shoulders. "Go back! We've got to save her! You can cut it open and get her out! She can't be... she can't..."
"It's too late." Ed said with a sigh of anguish. He shook his head. Even though he'd seen her die right in front of him, the boy wasn't thinking straight. "She's already gone. I saw it with these eyes. I'm so sorry, Eren. I was too far away."
Mikasa mewled like a small rodent. Eren grew deathly still and silent. The world seemed to recede from his sight down a long tunnel with the stone encrusted titan, its belly engorged on Hannes' and his mother's corpses and likely those of countless others, firmly affixed at the other end. He started to flail about wildly, so much so, that Ed feared he'd either drop him or have to hold on so tight he'd break his ribs. As he landed on a nearby roof, he paused momentarily, his hands moving with that inhuman speed.
Eren's body went limp as Mikasa stared on. "Eren?!" She shouted. "Is he dead? Is he dead?!" She shouted over and over.
Ed grunted, "He's fine. I just hit a pressure point. He'll wake up in about half an hour." Ed captured her eyes with a piercing gaze. "Now get a hold of yourself or I'll put you out too."
He vaulted into the air, once again streaking across the rooftops. Mikasa stared over his right shoulder. The terrain blurred into indistinguishable shapes beneath them as they accelerated, silently ping ponging from ledge to chimney to smoke stack among other elevated protrusions. The titans chasing them faded into obscurity, as Ed's speed outstripped theirs. She'd never seen anyone move that fast, not even the Scouting Legion with active 3D maneuver gear. She hid her face in the side of Ed's neck from the harsh wind and sobbed for Eren... cried for her foster mother... cried for all the ghosts of the past left behind.
Author's notes: I really wanted to show both the difference between Ed current abilities and those of other humans, as well as Ed in the source material. He's now a ninja far beyond those in his own manga. Naruto ninja movements are superhuman. I also hope I was faithful to the source material of Shingeki no Kyojin in capturing the children's dismay during their present situation. I hope I didn't offend anyone by killing off Hannes. He's a more important character in the source material, but as I'm diverging from it due to Edward's presence (Not to mention that I just don't like the character) I thought it best to end him here.
Finally, I should be updating more frequently now. Please continue reading and reviewing; it helps a lot.
