A/N: Just a one-shot about the relationship between Superman and Superboy. Since she never made an appearance nor received a direct reference in Young Justice, for the purpose of the fic Supergirl either doesn't exist or died on Krypton in Earth-16.
Connor Kent didn't know why Superman ignores him.
Connor Kent never seeks to annoy the Superman.
Connor Kent always polite to the man, he says "please" and "thank you" and "excuse me" when he needs to get around him.
Connor Kent only wants to be friends with Superman.
That's difficult when he won't even let Connor Kent try.
Clark Kent doesn't want to close to the Superboy. Clark Kent doesn't want the pain of loosing another.
In the years since Ma and Pa Kent told him of his less than terrestrial origins, he's grown to accept the fact that he would never have a child that was of his own blood. Kryptonian genes just weren't similar enough to anything from Earth. Funny, the genes that saves the last surviving member of his species through faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound are the ones that dooms the entire genome to extinction. Kryptonian genes simply weren't compatible with human.
That wasn't for lack of trying though. After months of trying with Lois and not even a fertilization, much less pregnancy, they consulted the Star Labs scientists. Taking DNA samples from both of them, they worked for months to combine it. Few grew to an embryo, and even fewer developed past six weeks. Only one made it full term, a week, tiny little thing. Clark and Lois had been so excited, doing more and more in preparation for the baby as the due date grew closer. They even had a name picked out: Connor.
He didn't last an hour. The hippocampus in his brain never properly formed, and even with doctors doing everything they could, there was only so much. After that, they gave up on ever having children together, they couldn't put another child threw that.
Superboy tried to free match for a reason. Sure, he believed in the freedom he was telling the Cadmus genomorphs, but what he really wants is a brother. He wanted another Kryptonian to acknowledge him.
Superman wanted a sone. He was afraid of loosing another one.
Superboy was six months old when he and Superman had their first meaningful conversation.
"Let me tell you a story," Clark said to Connor, "About a man who wanted a child until he had one, and almost lost him because he didn't get rid of him."
