Chapter 10: The Fool

Felix found the forest that Mary had indicated, and immediately set about seeking mushrooms. "Only the pure white ones, or the white ones with pink spots," she'd instructed. And after a few minutes he began finding them. She'd made thousands of cakes, and had often come here herself for ingredients, but she'd not had time with the suddenness of the party, and so Felix had volunteered. He'd not had a good excuse to say no, and perhaps it would give him a chance to clear out some of the tangled thoughts in his head. At some point he'd get over the fact that Ralph had swiped away this beautiful woman from right under his nose.
Finding some of the mushrooms growing in a fairly dense cluster of trees, he got down on his hands and knees and crawled along picking them, popping them into his basket. And finding a rather perfectly shaped one, one of the pink-spotted variety, he popped it into his mouth instead of the basket. Intense flavors of strawberry ice cream burst onto his tongue and he closed his eyes with delight. No wonder Mary wanted these for a cake. The taste was heavenly.
And coming to the end of the cluster of trees, he clambered back to his feet, only to discover that he was not alone. "GAHHHH!" he squawked in surprise and dropped the basket. Thankfully it didn't spill.
"Hello!" said the little girl standing there. She, like everything else in this game, looked as if she were made of candy or themed in some variety of such. Most noticeably her dark hair was full of seemingly random pieces of it.
"You startled me, Miss. I didn't hear you sneak up on me," he replied and he picked up the basket, glancing about to see if any of the candy mushrooms had bounced out.
"It wouldn't be sneaking if you'd heard me," she retorted. "A-doy!"
"Well no, I suppose not."
"What's your name?" she asked, her wide hazel eyes staring at him.
Felix didn't recognize her, though admittedly he didn't know many of the occupants of Sugar Rush. They tended to keep to themselves. "I'm Fix-It Felix, Jr., Miss, of the game Fix-it Felix, Jr."
"What are you doing here?" she asked, putting her hands onto the edge of the basket and peering into it."
"Oh, just getting a few ingredients for a cake."
"I see." Not letting go of the basket she looked up at him. "Hey, are you a plumber?" she asked.
