Chapter 5
Èponine bolted upright from the bed when she heard an urgent knock coming from outside. She ran and opened the door and saw that it's just Clemence, their head maid.
"Good heavens! I thought the house was on fire or something, Clemence! What's the matter?" The sleepy brunette asked the older woman who was now smiling.
"Well, Èponine, you overslept again and if you don't get up now the bus will be waiting far longer than the usual." Èponine sighed.
"Okay. Is Gavroche up already? What about Azelma?" She asked while fixing her bed.
"They're both eating breakfast, and as usual just waiting for you to get up." She replied irritatedly making Èponine laugh at her antics.
"Geez Clemence, I'm just kidding, no need to give me one of your lectures." She entered her bathroom and got ready for the day while Clemence just sighed and shook her head, at the same time trying to supress a smile.
Èponine came down in a plain black shirt that says 'Join the dark side, we have cookies.', a red cardigan, jeans, and red converse fifteen minutes after seven and the bus was about to arrive in five minutes. She greeted both her siblings and grabbed an apple for breakfast.
Èponine planned to do her normal routine but remembered what she had to do today. She ate her apple faster and grabbed her satchel that contains everything that she needs. She heard the familliar honking of the school bus and rushed out making her siblings and their staff stare at her in wonder. She skidded to a halt once she reached their front door.
"Am I ready to do this?" She muttered.
"Of course you are." She heard her brother's sure voice. She turned and kneeled to his level.
"Are you sure I can do this?" Gavroche stared back at her with his determined blue eyes and nodded firmly.
"We're Jondrettes remember? Like mother always says, we are born ready. So whatever you're gonna do today, I'm sure you can. I know you can." He said making Èponine grin widely. She hugged her brother.
"Thank you 'Vroche." She stood up and faced the door once again.
'If I'm really gonna do this, better make the story clear.' She thought more confidently before going out.
Èponine climbed up the bus and was immediately met by the eyes of Enjolras. She immediately walked up to him.
"May I?" Èponine asked gesturing to the seat beside him. Enjolras moved to make space for her and she sat down.
The bus began moving and there is suddenly an awkward silence. Èponine fidgeted in her seat, losing all the confidence she had earlier and Enjolas looked stoic except for the hard look on his eyes.
"So..." Èponine started and laced her fingers together, "I know you've been wanting some answers since the first time you helped me... So what do you want to know?"
"Èponine, I'm not forcing you to telling me your whole life story or anything, and I'm not holding the help I gave you against - "
"Whoa there 'Ras." Èponine suddenly cut off. Enjolras raised an eyebrow at the nickname making Èponine laugh. "I just asked you what you want to know, not to give me a speech. So?" Enjolras sighed.
"I just want to ask why you're father is doing that to you." Èponine looked at Enjolras.
"First of all, I don't want you to pity me for what you're about to hear." Enjolras nodded. "You know about my mother, right?" Enjolras nodded again. "Rosalie Jondrette is a very kind woman..."
The brunette then told everything that happened, just the most important parts of course for they only have twenty minutes before arriving in Combeferre's house. Enjolras listened intently as the always shielded and careful Èponine spilled her life story to him.
"So that's me... Did I answer all of your questions?" She turned to the blonde and found him looking like in deep concentration.
"'Ras?" His head snapped up.
"Oh yes, of course. I'm sorry, I was just thinking about the children you're helping..." Èponine kept staring and urged him to continue his thought.
"I mean... I just thought that it was unexpected." Eponine raised an eyebrow. "No not like that, I'm not saying you're not capable of helping others. It's just that you rarely come to our meetings because of your situation and I thought-"He was abruptly cut off by a cough.
"You're blabbering, 'Ras." The third time of being called in a nickname set Enjolras off.
"Why do you keep calling me 'Ras? You do know I hate nicknames right?"
"Why yes I do. Well you do know that you hate being called by your first name right? Enjolras is such mouth full and I refuse to use Enj and Apollo for the other guys use it. I'm known for my originality, you know." Èponine said grinning.
The two noticed that the bus had stopped and their driver went down to fix something, or that's what they heard. Èponine immediately stood up to proceed to her normal seat but she felt a hand around her wrist. She looked at the blonde leader in question.
"Thank you for trusting me, Èponine. But can I ask you one more favor?"
"Depends on what it is." Èponine said, shrugging.
"I just want you to promise me that you'll call me immediately if you need help."
Èponine kept staring warily at Enjolras.
"Èponine, I know what you're thinking. This is not pity or charity, I know you don't need it. I just want to make sure you're safe, that's the best thing I can offer you after trusting me."
There was a few moments of silence before Èponine replied an "I promise." Enjolras let go of her wrist and she went back to her seat and pulled out her book to read as if nothing happened earlier. Combeferre went up a minute later and occupied Èponine's seat earlier. The rest of the ride was spent how it usually is and so is the rest of their day.
The only difference is, of course, the most careful and guarded of the group learned how to trust.
