Chapter 13: So Unclear Now
"Are you sure you don't want to go home?"
Blaine smiled at his worried boyfriend, squeezing his hand as they walked towards Blaine's locker. "Kurt, I'm fine. They didn't even get a chance to hit me thanks to you. Don't worry."
Kurt seemed to relax a little but he didn't smile, just looped his arm through Blaine's as they walked. "Okay, but I'll be waiting outside your classes to walk with you just in case."
"I appreciate the gesture, even if it is unnecessary," Blaine said with a light shrug, turning his head to kiss Kurt's cheek as they reached his locker. Luckily, there wasn't anyone at the school yet, so they didn't have to worry about PDA causing them trouble. "Thank you for rescuing me," he said with an affectionate smile. "My brave, handsome boyfriend."
Kurt finally smiled a little, shaking his head. "I'm not brave."
"You're the bravest person I've ever met," Blaine argued, meeting Kurt's eyes.
Kurt didn't say anything else, just shaking his head and looked away. Blaine frowned sadly but didn't press the matter. He figured Kurt would come to him if he wanted to talk.
Over the next several weeks, Kurt and Blaine spent almost every minute together, whether it was just the two of them or with the rest of the Hummel family. They enjoyed the time they had left together, deciding to ignore the fast-approaching deadline; no pun intended.
They knew that each moment brought them closer to the last day, so one day Blaine brought up a topic he thought he would never have the courage to talk about.
"Do you ever picture what our first time would be like?" he asked Kurt one day while they were sitting on Blaine's bed doing homework. His face flooded with red and his voice shook ever-so-slightly. Kurt looked up from his book, looking at Blaine curiously. Blaine blushed even more, stuttering as he said, "I-I mean, I just figured since—I don't know—forget I said anything. It's stupid."
Kurt shook his head and put his book aside, scooting closer to Blaine. "Sweetie, it's not stupid. You can talk to me about anything. Especially… that," he said, blushing a little as well. Blaine smiled nervously. "Look, this is all new to me, too," Kurt explained, kneeling in front of Blaine and grasping his hands. Blaine looked up at him with surprised eyes. Kurt laughed a little. "What?"
Blaine shook his head. "I-I just thought… Well, Kurt—frankly, you're gorgeous. And I can't believe that I'm… your first."
"You're my only," Kurt corrected, smiling softly. "I mean, you will be, if you're comfortable. I don't want to make you uncomfortable. But as I was saying, there's no need to be embarrassed. I'm nervous, too." Blaine frowned a little and Kurt sighed, shaking his head. "Nervous isn't the right word, I guess. I'm just… I'm anxious. I want to be with you, but it's completely new to both of us."
Blaine nodded. "I know what you mean. I feel the same way. I love you, Kurt, and I want you to know me. I want you to know everything. I'm yours, Kurt… in every way possible."
After that, they fell into a comfortable silence and Blaine continued doing homework. A few hours later, Kurt was still flipping through the pages of his book while Blaine was lying on his back, reading a Vogue magazine. Kurt was so enthralled by the novel that he startled a bit when Blaine tapped his arm.
"You scared me," Kurt said with a laugh, looking at Blaine with a smile.
Blaine returned the smile and said, "Sorry." His smile turned into a mix of determination and nerves and Kurt tilted his head curiously.
"Sweetheart?"
"M-Maybe we could… try," Blaine said, clearing his throat with a nervous cough. "Y-Your parents aren't home…"
Kurt's eyes widened when he realized what Blaine meant and he quickly set his book on the nightstand. "Oh. Uh, w-what did you have in mind?"
Blaine set the magazine aside and reached out for Kurt's hand, pulling him close. "Maybe you could just… oh." He gasped when Kurt moved so he was straddling Blaine's legs. "Yeah," Blaine breathed out. "Y-Yeah, do that."
Kurt smiled down at him and leaned down so he could kiss Blaine, sweet and gentle at first. Soon, it was Blaine who deepened the kiss, his hands hovering and not knowing where to go. Not breaking the kiss, Kurt moved Blaine's hands to his hips. He gasped into Blaine's mouth when Blaine's hands moved lower.
"Clothes?" Kurt asked inarticulately.
Without a word, Blaine nodded.
A little while later, Kurt was gently stroking the loose curls of his sleeping boyfriend. Blaine had fallen asleep a few minutes ago, one arm wrapped around Kurt while his head rested on Kurt's shoulder. Kurt smiled down at him, affection practically bleeding from his heart and his loving gaze.
"I love you, Blaine," he murmured, kissing Blaine's forehead.
Blaine groaned a little and hugged Kurt tighter. "Love'oo, Kurt," he mumbled in his sleep. Kurt's heart swelled and he closed his eyes, continuing to card his fingers through Blaine's soft curly hair.
Kurt fell asleep, perfectly content in Blaine's arms, feeling happier than he ever had.
A few hours later, they woke up, first Blaine and then Kurt. Blaine smiled widely up at Kurt, his eyes scrunching up in the way they always did when he was happy. Kurt smiled bashfully and leaned up to kiss Blaine briefly. Blaine, however, held onto the kiss and decided to breathe in the moment a little longer. He sucked on Kurt's lip and cupped Kurt's cheek in his palm gently. When they finally did break apart, cheeks flushed, Blaine's grin returned tenfold. "I love you."
"So you said," Kurt giggled. "At least ten times earlier, if I recall." Blaine blushed and sighed happily.
"I never knew it could be so perfect."
"Really?" Kurt asked, hopeful.
"Nothing could ever be less than perfect with you, I suppose," Blaine mused, pecking Kurt's lips.
"Even though we couldn't find… supplies?" Kurt asked, bashful again.
"Next time," Blaine promised. "Next time, maybe we can… uh, go all the way."
Kurt grinned. "Of course. We'll be more prepared." They both laughed a little awkwardly before Blaine sank down into the bed beside Kurt, sighing contentedly.
"I love you."
"I love you, too, Blaine."
"We should clean up before your parents get home."
"Right," Kurt nodded. "Uh, you go ahead and shower first."
Blaine smiled and kissed Kurt's forehead before going into the bathroom to shower.
Once Blaine was out of the room, Kurt finally allowed himself to let out a giddy laugh, hugging Blaine's pillow to his chest. Who knew it could feel so amazing to be in love?
After they were both showered and dressed in pajamas, they cuddled in bed and just talked for a while. Blaine held Kurt while he rested on Blaine's chest, tracing circles over Blaine's shoulders and collarbone. "Kurt?"
"Hm?" he asked, blissfully sleepy.
"When you… go back," Blaine started, tentative, "do you think you'll be able to still see me? Like you could before?"
Kurt's hand paused and he frowned, thoughtful. "I… I don't really know. I mean, I think so?"
For a while, they were both quiet. Then Blaine remembered something. "Before I met you… I had a dream. Someone told me that… everything was going to be okay. Was that you?"
Kurt smiled. "Yeah… Yeah, it was. I wasn't really supposed to, but I just had to help you somehow after what your—after what that monster did that night." Kurt's smile fell and he shook his head, curling in closer to Blaine. He'd been about to say after what your father did, but he couldn't bring himself to call him that after all he'd done to Blaine. He didn't deserve the title. He never had.
Blaine nodded, stroking Kurt's hair with his fingers, smiling when Kurt relaxed at the touch. "We're done with him," he whispered. "For good."
Kurt smiled and looked up at Blaine, leaning up to kiss his chin. Blaine chuckled softly. "I love you."
Blaine grinned and he could feel his heart picking up joyfully at hearing the familiar words fall from Kurt's lips. "I love you, too. I love you more than anything or anyone else," Blaine murmured sincerely.
Kurt nodded seriously. "I know… And it doesn't matter what anyone else says or thinks, that'll always be enough. It may not be enough to bring me back but it'll always be enough for me."
Without a word, Blaine leaned forward and pressed his lips to Kurt's, gently cupping Kurt's neck in his palm. After a few seconds, Kurt pulled away and pecked Blaine's lips lightly, smiling. After that, they returned to their original positions and fell fast asleep.
In the next few weeks, Blaine was busy sending in college applications and auditioning for various musical schools, mostly in New York. Kurt convinced him to apply for Julliard, helping him bring out his forgotten love of the piano and various other instruments—he'd never had much time to play while living with his parents. He practiced for several hours after school in order to be ready for his Julliard audition coming up in the next month or so and Kurt was always there to support him.
All the while, March 31st drew closer and closer, filling Kurt's heart with dread. He had no idea what to expect, really, because he'd never had a mission like this. He had no idea if Sonia was right about Blaine being able to bring him back, and even if she was, he didn't know if it would be enough. The whole thing just made him sick with uncertainty.
"Kurt! Kurt! C'mon, I have to show you something!" Blaine told him excitedly, pulling him out of his thoughts. School had just let out and Kurt had been waiting by Blaine's last class of the day, ready to take them home. But Blaine had other ideas.
"Blaine, what's going on?" Kurt asked, laughing a little as Blaine tugged him speedily through the crowded hallway.
"You'll see," Blaine told him with a grin. Finally, they stopped inside the choir room and Blaine smiled nervously at him, still holding his hand. "Just stay here and, uh, listen." Dropping his school bag, he took a seat on the piano bench and set his fingers up on the keys, taking a deep breath before he began to play.
There were no lyrics, and Kurt didn't recognize the song, but Kurt felt himself tearing up as Blaine threw himself into the music, playing with his whole heart like he'd been born to do it. Taking a few steps forward, Kurt stood beside the piano and just watched Blaine play, mesmerized by Blaine's fingers slipping gracefully over the ivory keys. After a few minutes, Blaine ended the song, adding his own little touch to it just as he had in parts throughout the song, and he turned to look at Kurt with a nervous smile.
"What did you think? It's called I giorni."
Kurt sat down on the piano bench and pulled Blaine into a hug. "That was amazing, Blaine. I'm so, so proud of you. There's no possible way you won't get in. I never knew you could play like that but that was… it was just perfect, Blaine. I loved it."
Blaine grinned and hugged Kurt tightly. "I love you so much. I wouldn't be doing this if it weren't for you… Thank you, Kurt."
"Of course, honey. I love you," Kurt told him with a soft smile, kissing his cheek.
Kurt drove them home and they found Burt and Carole sitting in the living room, watching TV. "We're home!" Kurt called from the hallway. When the two boys came into the living room, both grinning, Burt and Carole turned their attention towards them.
"Good day?" Burt asked.
Kurt nodded and squeezed Blaine's hand, beaming brightly. "Dad, you should've heard Blaine play."
"Kurt," Blaine murmured bashfully.
Kurt just grinned and excitedly pulled Blaine over to the piano by the window. "Will you play the song, Blaine?" he asked softly, sitting down on the bench beside his boyfriend. "Please?"
"Kurt…" Blaine sighed, shaking his head. "That… wasn't my audition piece. I was playing that for you."
"Oh," Kurt breathed out, blushing. "I-I…"
Blaine smiled softly. "It's okay."
"Will you play your audition song, then?" Kurt asked hopefully. "I want to hear it."
Blaine grinned. "Of course. It's kind of long, so…" he trailed off, turning his attention to the keys and getting ready to play. "I think you'll know it," he added with a grin before beginning to play.
When he finished, Kurt hugged him tightly and kissed his cheek. "You're amazing, Blaine. That was beautiful. Julliard is going to love you. I mean, all you have to do is nail this audition and you're basically in. They've already accepted your application. You just have to prove that you're talented, which you most certainly are."
Blaine laughed happily, hugging Kurt and crying. "I can't believe I'm actually doing this… I never thought I'd get the chance, you know?"
"I'm so proud of you," Kurt said.
After a few minutes, they stood up and Blaine went to help Carole with dinner while Kurt sat on the couch beside his dad.
"That's quite the special boy you've got there," Burt said, sounding a bit choked up.
Kurt looked at him and smiled. "I know… He's—well, he's amazing. Dad, are you crying?"
Burt chuckled a little, patting Kurt's shoulder. "Yeah, I am. I'm just really proud of both of you and how much you've accomplished. Blaine… he's become like a son to me."
Kurt grinned, tearing up in relief. He hadn't realized he'd needed to hear that until his dad said it. But now he knew for sure that, even if Kurt had to leave, Blaine would be okay. He was with a family that cared about him and he'd been making friends in Glee Club. He wasn't going to be alone without Kurt.
The rest of February passed quickly and before Kurt knew it, March had almost entirely zipped by. It was March 25th when Blaine finally broke down and started crying in Kurt's arms. That Sunday night, Kurt had no idea how to console his terrified boyfriend.
"Shh, honey, it's going to be okay," he said, feeling helpless.
"B-But you're leaving!" Blaine sobbed. "W-Why isn't it w-working? I thought I l-loved y-you enough to b-b-bring you b-back!"
"Blaine, we still have six more days," Kurt tried. "It can still work. Give me your hand, okay?" Blaine sobbed harder but let Kurt grab his hand and press it to Kurt's chest. "Do you feel that? My heart is still beating. That's because of you, remember? We're going to be okay, Blaine. I'm still here with you. It's okay, sweetheart," he said soothingly, rubbing Blaine's back. Sucking in hitched breaths and crying softly in between sniffles, Blaine rested his head over Kurt's heart so he could hear for himself that Kurt's heart was still thump-thumping like it should be.
What's going to happen?
They both wanted the answer to that question, but neither boy had a way of answering it until the upcoming Saturday decided their fate.
In the next week, Blaine only managed to force himself to go to school because he knew Julliard wouldn't take him if he suddenly let his grades slip. He had to pretend like his world wasn't about to be pulled out from under him in a few days.
By the time Friday came, Blaine was exhausted and reluctant to let go of Kurt to go to class. That night, Blaine clung to Kurt and refused to go to sleep just in case the universe decided to take Kurt away from him the second that March 31st began.
To his relief, it didn't. Blaine spent all day practically attached to Kurt, never letting go of his hand for more than a couple of seconds.
Although he pretended to be strong about it, Kurt wasn't much better off. With each passing minute, the uncertainty of when or even if he was going to be taken away from his family was complete torture. He just didn't know and he hated that he couldn't do anything about it.
Eventually, 10:00 p.m. came around and the family was sitting in the living room, anxiously waiting for something, anything, to happen. Blaine and Kurt sat on the Lovesac while Carole and Burt sat on the couch, leaving Finn to sit in the big chair. Kurt settled into Blaine's side, tense with anticipating and worry. Blaine held him close, a pit of worry churning in his gut.
Time seemed to pass in slow motion and everyone flinched when Finn's watch beeping signaled that it was 11:45.
"Blaine?" Kurt asked softly.
"Yes, my love?" Blaine replied instantly, turning his head to look at Kurt worriedly. "Are you alright?"
Kurt smiled. "I'm fine. I was just wondering… Would you play that song for me again? J-Just in case I… I…"
"Of course," Blaine said, knowing what Kurt meant in his unfinished sentence. Kurt smiled weakly, grateful that Blaine saved him from saying it out loud.
Blaine sat on the piano bench and Kurt sat beside him, leaning into his side as Blaine began to play, a special lullaby just for Kurt. Kurt wished that he could hear Blaine play this song all the time; it was just so beautiful. And Blaine had said the song was for Kurt, making it that much more meaningful. Silent tears trailed down Kurt's cheeks as he listened to Blaine play.
Just as Blaine was about to finish the song, Kurt suddenly grabbed his arm, looking up at him with pleading eyes. "Keep playing… please." Blaine nodded and kissed Kurt's forehead before continuing the song. Since it mostly repeated the same few patterns over and over, he just kept putting those patterns together in different arrangements, playing for as long as Kurt wanted him to. Just when the song had nearly put Kurt to sleep, Finn gasped loudly.
"Guys! It's almost midnight!"
Kurt startled awake and Blaine stopped playing, pulling Kurt to him. They walked over to the couch and everyone sat around them.
"I love you, Kurt," Blaine whispered, just in case it was the last chance he'd get.
Everyone else did the same and Burt knelt down on the ground to hug his son tightly. "I love you, Kurt," he said, his usually gruff voice thick with tears. "I didn't get to tell you that last time." Kurt cried softly into his father's shoulder while Blaine held one of his hands. "Finn, what time is it?"
Finn looked down at his watch and frowned at what he saw. "Uh, it's twelve oh one. What does that mean?"
Kurt sat up suddenly, eyes wide. He looked over at Blaine, who was thinking the same thing as he was. "Does that mean it worked?" Blaine asked, eyes lighting up with hope.
"What are you talking about?" Burt asked, confused.
"Boys, what's going on?" Carole asked, wiping away her tears.
Kurt just grinned and hugged Blaine tightly. "It worked, Blaine! It worked, I—"
But his words melted away into a pained scream as Kurt keeled over, eyes shut tight.
Once again, nobody in the room had any idea what was going on.
A/N: This'll (hopefully) be the last cliffhanger! Don't worry too much about Kurt; I wouldn't kill him off, I promise. I'm too much of a hopeless romantic to write a sad ending.
The next chapter will be the last chapter, I think, to wrap things up. After that, if enough people still follow this story and are interested in me continuing it, I might write a sequel. It all depends on if you guys want one :)
The songs I used in this chapter are I Giorni by Ludovico Einaudi & Disney Medley by Martin Goldstein ( grooveshark dot com /#!/s/Medley+Somewhere+Out+There/2qlDi9?src=5 )
Love you, my lovelies!
Review please :D
