Chapter 14: I Can See It All
Blaine was at Kurt's side in an instant, holding his boyfriend's hand and watching him worriedly. "Kurt? Kurt! Wake up!" Kurt was still screaming in pain and he had tears running down his face but he wouldn't open his eyes. It was like he was having a nightmare but Blaine could tell he's awake because Kurt was squeezing his hand and pulling on him desperately. "Kurt, sweetie, open your eyes. Honey, what's wrong? I don't know what to do."
Blaine desperately tried to pull his boyfriend out of whatever internal suffering he was going through but nothing was working. Letting out another sob/scream, Kurt started shaking. Blaine grabbed the blanket that Burt handed to him, wrapping it around Kurt's shoulders and pulling his boyfriend into his arms. "Blaine…" Kurt whimpered before crying out again.
"Shh, it's alright. You're safe. Stay with me, sweetheart." Blaine frowned as Kurt started choking on his own sobs, gasping for breath in a coughing fit. He startled as Carole handed him a glass of water, taking it and trying to help Kurt drink it. But Kurt was moving too much, crying and coughing at the same time.
Eventually he stopped coughing, whimpering, "Blaine…"
"I'm here," Blaine assured him. "I'm right here. It's okay. You're safe. Can you open your eyes for me, Kurt?" Kurt nodded subtly before his eyes fluttered open and he stared up at Blaine, eyes red and puffy from crying. "Kurt, what was that?" Blaine asked, cupping Kurt's face and watching him worriedly.
Kurt sat up a little and shifted so he was sitting in Blaine's lap, letting out a shaky sigh. "I'm not sure. I-I think I might've just relived my death."
Blaine's eyes widened and he held Kurt closer. "Are you hurt?"
Kurt shook his head. "Not really. It was all in my head, but it felt real and I was scared that I was being taken back. But I'm still here." He smiled up at his boyfriend and then at the rest of his family.
"So… it worked," Blaine said softly, a smile slowly spreading across his features. In a few seconds, he was grinning. "You… you get to stay! It worked!" he laughed happily, hugging Kurt tightly.
"Sonia was right," Kurt whispered, grinning and turning to bury his face in Blaine's shoulder. He laughed as Blaine started kissing all over the side of his face. "I love you."
"I love you, too," Blaine replied with a grin, finally letting go of Kurt long enough for him to hug the rest of his family. Now he wasn't so scared of Kurt leaving his side because he knew Kurt wasn't going anywhere. He knew that Kurt would be with him for a long time.
And he couldn't be happier.
The rest of the weekend was spent enjoying their newfound peace, finally able to stop worrying about being separated. Burt and Carole were able to go back to work knowing that their son wouldn't be taken away from them again so Kurt and Blaine had the house to themselves most of that Sunday.
"Will you play something for me?" Kurt asked while they were watching a movie, cuddled together on the Lovesac in the living room.
Blaine looked at him and smiled. "Sure. Any requests?"
"I think you know," Kurt said, smiling shyly.
Blaine nodded in understanding and they walked over to the piano. Blaine sat on the bench, Kurt sitting beside him, and started playing I Giorni.
Kurt closed his eyes and just listened to his boyfriend play, smiling lovingly. He had grown familiar with the melody by now, letting it soothe him. Just before the song was coming to its end, Blaine morphed it into something new. Something Kurt hadn't heard before.
"What's that?" he asked softly.
"River Flows in You by Yiruma," Blaine answered without looking up from the keys. "I learned it a long time ago, so I don't know if—"
"It's beautiful," Kurt told him, smiling and kissing Blaine's cheek. Blaine smiled, too.
"You're beautiful," he said quietly. He didn't see Kurt's blush, but he could tell it was there by the way Kurt hid his face in Blaine's shoulder. "I love you," he said with a grin, leaning his head on Kurt's while he played.
"I love you, too."
Two weeks later, Blaine had his audition for Julliard. Kurt watched from the back of the room as Blaine played the piece beautifully, putting his heart into the music as always.
When Blaine finished, he stood up and bowed politely, grinning. The two people from Julliard that had watched him clapped and one even gave him a standing ovation, which only made Blaine's grin impossibly bigger and brighter. Then Blaine was excused from the room. He walked towards the door until he was out of sight of the judges and then ran forward into Kurt's waiting arms. Together they left the room and overheard some of the people who were waiting to audition. Blaine heard someone say that one of the judges was the Julliard headmaster and that was when he remembered seeing a picture of the headmaster on the school's website.
With wide eyes, he looked at Kurt. "Kurt! The headmaster of Julliard gave me a standing ovation!" he exclaimed, grinning brilliantly.
"I'm so proud of you, Blaine," Kurt said, grabbing Blaine's hands and smiling softly at him. "You nailed it in there. I'd be surprised if your acceptance letter isn't already being sent."
Blaine laughed and squeezed Kurt's hand. "I'll have to wait at least a few weeks before I find out."
"Don't worry," Kurt told him, grinning. "You're amazing, Blaine. You're going to get in."
Blaine threw his arms around Kurt, tearing up. "It doesn't matter if I don't. What matters to me is that you believed in me. That's all I've ever wanted."
Despite Kurt's reassurances, Blaine worried himself sick until his letter came. Even then, he spent hours just staring at it before he opened it.
"Blaine, relax," Kurt told him, picking up the letter from its place on the kitchen table. He handed it to Blaine and stood behind his boyfriend with his hands on Blaine's shoulders. "You're amazing. This is just a technicality. Open it."
Finally, Blaine nodded and took a deep breath before opening the envelope. He slipped the paper out just enough so that he could see the first sentence and then he just sat there in silence for a moment, dropping the letter to the ground.
"Blaine?" Kurt frowned, worried by Blaine's reaction. He picked up the letter and as soon as he saw the first sentence he shouted, "Blaine!" He pulled Blaine into a hug and Blaine started laughing happily as Kurt spotted Blaine's face with kisses. "Blaine! You made it! You're in!"
"I got into Julliard!" Blaine whooped triumphantly before kissing Kurt's lips, holding his face between his hands. Kurt sighed and relaxed against him, arms draped over Blaine's shoulders.
Blaine pulled Kurt closer by the waist and Kurt dropped the letter in surprise, kissing back enthusiastically. Just as Kurt was about to suggest they move to the bedroom, they heard a throat being cleared in the kitchen entryway. With a yelp, Kurt pulled out of Blaine's embrace and looked at his father, who was far from amused. "D-Dad, we were just—"
"I know what you were doing," Burt said with a raised eyebrow. "To be honest I'd rather I didn't know. What I'm wondering is why the kitchen table was about to become an item of intimacy."
Kurt blushed even more than he already had been if that was even possible, and Blaine tried to explain for his speechless boyfriend.
"Sir, we were celebrating." Burt didn't seem convinced, so Blaine gulped and bent down to grab his Julliard letter, handing it to his boyfriend's very intimidating dad. "Celebrating," Blaine repeated as Burt read the letter. After a few seconds, Burt grinned at Blaine and slapped a hand onto his shoulder.
"I'm proud of you, kid," he said. Blaine broke out into a grin and launched himself forward to hug Burt, the closest to a father he would ever get. "By the way, you don't need to call me sir."
Blaine laughed and nodded, pulling back. He felt Kurt grab his hand and he laced their fingers together, squeezing Kurt's hand. "Thanks, Burt. I… I just want you to know how grateful I am for everything you've done for me. I know I wasn't very good about showing it at first, but I really do appreciate it."
"I know, kid," Burt smiled. "We're glad to have ya. Just… from now on, keep the sex out of the kitchen."
Both Kurt and Blaine turned as red as a tomato and Burt left the room, laughing to himself. What fun was being a father if you didn't embarrass your kids every now and then?
"He's really not that scary," Kurt told Blaine, still blushing. "I mean, he's protective, but he's really a big softie. And he loves you, so you have nothing to worry about."
"Really? Because I thought he was about three seconds from ripping my head off until I handed him that letter."
Kurt laughed and kissed Blaine lightly, touching his cheek lightly with his fingertips. "Well, whether he likes it or not, we get the house to ourselves tonight since him and Carole both work. What do you say we take advantage of our alone time?"
Blaine grinned. "I say that's a great idea, considering we actually have what we need this time. But I have to agree with your dad about one thing: the table is off limits. I wouldn't be able to look your dad in the eye at Friday Night Dinners."
Kurt laughed again and tugged Blaine forward. "Of course. Now, what do you say we watch a movie and cuddle until we have some alone time?"
"I say you're full of great ideas today," Blaine said instantly, grinning and following Kurt downstairs to his bedroom.
A few hours later, they finally had the house to themselves and they were nervously lying together in Kurt's bed, facing each other. It wasn't their first time being intimate, not at all, but it would be the first time that they went all the way. They'd tried a few times before, but Blaine hadn't been completely ready—he'd wanted to keep going because he'd thought Kurt would be leaving soon, but Kurt could tell he was uncomfortable.
"Can I?" Blaine asked, almost in a whisper, as he reached for the buttons of Kurt's shirt. Kurt nodded and they sat up together, kneeling as Blaine undid each button carefully. He needed something to focus on. But then Kurt's chest was exposed and that was all he could focus on. He gulped and felt Kurt grab his trembling hands.
"Blaine, sweetheart, it's alright. Are you sure you're okay with this? I want you to be comfortable. Please tell me if you aren't."
Blaine nodded. "I'm okay. It's just… it's just that you're really gorgeous. And I can't seem to take my eyes off of you, I'm afraid."
Kurt smiled softly. "It's okay. You can look." He paused, moving Blaine's hands to his hips. Blaine froze for a second before he relaxed, smiling a little. Kurt reached for the hem of Blaine's shirt and Blaine gave a little nod to let him know it was okay. With that, Kurt pulled Blaine's shirt up and over his head, leaning forward to kiss him after he did so. "I love you," he whispered.
"I love you, too," Blaine breathed out, overwhelmed. His eyes never left the blue ones in front of him as Kurt gently pushed him back against the bed.
They woke up a few hours later, sated and sleepy, and just cuddled under the covers for a little while. "You're perfect," Kurt whispered into the silence as he stroked Blaine's loose curls. "You're beautiful and wonderful and perfect."
Blaine just smiled at him. "If that's true, then I'm not sure I believe in the whole 'opposites attract' theory. Because I think you just described yourself without meaning to."
Kurt grinned sleepily at him, and a few minutes later they were both asleep again, perfectly content to stay there in each other's arms forever.
About a month later, graduation came around. Kurt sat in the front row of the auditorium and cheered the loudest when Blaine was handed his diploma. 'I'm so proud of you!' he mouthed when he caught Blaine's eyes on the stage. Blaine grinned brightly at him, focusing on Kurt like he was the only person in the whole room—no, the whole world.
That night, as they lay together and Kurt told Blaine over and over how proud he was, Blaine brought up something that'd been bothering him in the past couple weeks.
"What about your graduation? It wouldn't be fair if you didn't get one. I know you don't want to go to McKinley, but there are online classes, and colleges usually see that as determination to get a good education. It's not fair that I'm getting my dream of New York and you aren't. But you still can."
Kurt was hesitant, but Blaine eventually convinced him to finish out his senior year online. He figured he'd be able to finish the required courses fairly easily because of the advantage Dalton Academy had given him.
However, it wasn't until Kurt was actually registering for the classes that Blaine mentioned a very important detail. "There's only one problem… According to the world, 'Kurt Hummel' is no longer alive."
Kurt just turned to him and smiled, somewhat mischievous. "Perhaps I'll have to become 'Kurt Anderson' for a while. You know, for the sake of being inconspicuous."
Blaine's eyes were wide with surprise when he said, "Unless I've gone crazy, I do believe you just proposed to me."
"I'd say that's accurate," Kurt told him with a shy smile.
And Blaine knew, no matter what problems the world threw at them, they'd be all right as long as they were together. And he had a feeling they'd be together for a very, very long time.
