Callie woke up the next morning to the smell of cinnamon rolls and the feeling of a body curled into her side and an arm around her midsection. She smiled sleepily and opened her eyes to see Arizona looking down at her.
"Good morning sleepy head." Callie looked so cute in her grogginess and it was a sight Arizona wanted to wake up to every morning.
"Mmm morning beautiful. Did you sleep well?" Arizona nodded her head, her curls bouncing around her face. The bright rays coming in through the window illuminated her skin and brought an extra shine to her eyes. She looked like an angel.
"I did. This bed is crazy comfy. I hope you don't mind but I poked around in the kitchen and made us some breakfast. It's waiting for us in there on the table."
"I will never, ever, mind if you wake me up with breakfast and cuddling." She wrapped her arms around Arizona and pulled her tightly into her body. "You are amazing."
Arizona wiggled her way out of the embrace and pulled the blanket to the end of the bed and yelled, "Breakfast time!" Callie grumbled but got out of bed.
"A little less amazing now." Arizona looked at Callie and lifted and eyebrow but said nothing as she took her hand and dragged her into the kitchen. On the table was a spread of cinnamon rolls, yogurt, and fresh fruit with tall glasses of milk and coffee next to two place settings. "Okay, so totally beyond amazing is more like it." Callie took Arizona's hand that was in her's and kissed the back of it. "You didn't have to do all this."
Arizona led her to the table and pulled out Callie's chair for her before they both sat down.
"It was really no big deal. Everything was here; I just baked a little and set it out. This place is kind of ridiculous."
"Well I appreciate it and you." Callie took a bite of a cinnamon roll. "Yum. And this. This is delicious."
"It's the least I could do. You were so sweet with me last night."
Arizona had never been more turned on than she was the night before, but if she was being honest she didn't think she was completely ready yet. She did want to be with Callie in that way, and if Callie didn't stop them she probably would have had sex with her, but she would have nervously fumbled her way through it. Even if it was with Callie she didn't want to remember her first time as an awkward mess.
"Honestly Arizona you don't have to thank me for that. I just don't think we're ready yet. At least I know I'm not. It'll be my first time too. With a woman. With you. It's really important to me and like you've said it only happens once so I'd rather wait and do it right."
Arizona was often grateful that Callie was so open because one of them really needed to be for them to work. Callie picked up on this too so she would sometimes share more than she normally would to put Arizona at ease even if they never acknowledged that it happened.
"Our first date is a bit soon yeah?"
"Just a little bit." Callie brought her index finger and thumb up about a centimeter apart for emphasis.
"So we wait until it feels right and maybe abide by the third date rule?"
"Deal." Callie could happily agree to that. They ate for a minute in silence before Arizona spoke again.
"So, are you free today?"
"No, after I'm done here I'm going to see my other girlfriend." Callie was laughing at her own sarcastic joke for a few moments while she was eating from the bowl of fruit. When she realized Arizona hadn't said anything, or for that matter, made any noise or movement whatsoever, she looked over to see Arizona completely still, just staring at her. "Okay, sorry, dumb joke."
"Girlfriend?"
"What?" Callie wasn't sure what was happening here.
"I didn't know if we were girlfriends. But you just said girlfriend. You implied that I'm your girlfriend. So, I need to know. Am I your girlfriend?"
"Yeah." Callie said it as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
"Okay. Good. So, yeah, we're spending the day together. I'm spending the day with my girlfriend." Arizona was in such a state of shock and so over joyed that she almost became fixated on this idea that Callie was her girlfriend. Today, Calliope Torres became her girlfriend. Her girlfriend. Arizona snapped out of her thoughts at the sound of her girlfriend's voice.
"So what are our plans? We could do something from our list if you want."
"Hmm, no we just did something last night. I don't want to go through everything too quickly. I'd actually like to add a few things. Those were just the things on the top of my head."
Callie went over to her bag and pulled out a couple pieces of paper, two pens, and her phone. She shot off a quick text and sat back down at the table. She unfolded one paper and smoothed it out before she put it down between them so they both could see it. She gave a blank paper and pen to Arizona and put the other of the two in front of her.
"How about we both brainstorm for a bit and then share what we came up with?"
"Sounds good to me, but I'm going to kick your butt. My ideas are going to be so fun you won't know what hit you."
"We'll see about that."
A few minutes later there was a knock at the front door and Arizona tensed immediately as Callie went to answer it. She was sure it must be one of Callie's family members. Maybe her dad. Callie talked about how close they were. How would he react to her being her – she looked down at herself – in Callie's clothes? As she was seriously jumping out a window and running back to school Callie came back in alone, but she was holding a small notebook.
"Who was at the door? And where'd the notebook come from?"
Callie sat back down but sheepishly avoided Arizona's eyes.
"It was one of the people my parents have working in the house. I texted in to the system we have set up earlier to ask someone to bring a notebook back here for me."
"What's it for?" Arizona was pretty shocked that Callie could have someone at her beck and call at any time she wanted. If Arizona didn't just hear what Callie said and hadn't seen her property she wouldn't have guessed that she was this wealthy. Her furniture and belongs at school were all about average. She never talked down to anyone or was condescending or snobby like a lot of really rich girls she's met typically were.
Callie appreciated that Arizona wasn't making a big deal out of it. She was sometimes embarrassed that she was more fortunate than so many other people so she tried to ignore it most of the time, but that was impossible when she brought someone home with her.
"It's our book. It's for us to write all the stuff we want to do together in and then as we do them we can cross them off. This way we won't lose any pages or rip or spill something on them. Now it can be organized and all in one place."
"Ooh and we can decorate it with stickers and pictures and tape stuff in from when we do something!"
"That sounds perfect. You write the first thing."
They went back and forth and came up with more and more ideas. By the end it looked like this:
Beach & bonfire with friends
Night Swimming
Walk along the beach/boardwalk and get ice cream
Fishing Boat
Zoo
Baseball game.
Clubbing (and actually being together for once)
Pizza and watching movies or studying
Chinese food & watching movies/studying
Fall asleep talking to each other
Concert
Bowling
Get drunk together
Disney movie marathon
Go dancing
Dance in the rain
Kiss in the rain
Batting cage
Mini golf
Sea World
Arcade
Cook dinner together
Smoke pot together
Go on a picnic
Carnival/Fair
Stargazing
Karaoke
Go to a museum
Ride bikes
Go out on a boat/jet ski
Watch sunset/sunrise
Watch TED Talks together
Basketball game
Tell parents & friends about relationship
Sex ;)
As they were going they disagreed on a couple, namely the Disney marathon and smoking pot. They eventually agreed to put them both on the list and Callie joked that maybe they should do them at the same time. Arizona winked at Callie as she wrote the last one before rereading the last one Callie wrote right on top of that.
"You want to tell your family about us?" Arizona was definitely not expecting Callie to bring this up so soon. Once those words were out of Callie's mouth there would be no turning back. It really didn't help that her parents are such devout Catholics. On top of that, Callie is the definition of a daddy's girl and if he didn't approve Arizona wasn't sure if Callie would defy him and stand up herself and them as a couple.
"Well maybe not in the immediate future, but of course I want them to know the person I'm dating." She wanted to wait at least a little while to make sure she and Arizona were serious because their relationship would be her reason for telling them. "I want people to know we're together. I'm so proud to have you as my girlfriend Arizona."
Arizona almost melted at Callie's sweetness, but she also realized that so far they've been in a pretty pink bubble. Coming out should be positive and exciting, but Callie has a tendency to let her emotions control her actions and often gets ahead of herself.
"That's sweet honey, but we should take it slowly. You know? Work our way up to parent level." Callie pouted and her shoulder slumped giving her a look of total defeat. Arizona felt bad about thinking how damn cute she looked in this situation, but she couldn't help it.
"Wait, you don't want anyone to know about us? You don't want me to tell my parents?" Callie's tone was hard to decipher. It sounded like she could be upset or just as easily pissed off, or maybe a combination. If Arizona didn't clamp down this problem soon she had a feeling Callie was going to blow.
"No! What? Of course I want people to know about us. I'm sure none if our friends or really anyone who has seen us at school will be all that surprised because they've seen us with each other, but your family? You've only had boyfriends. When you went to school you had a boyfriend. You were just home a week ago and to them you were the same as always, going in there a week later and telling them about your new girlfriend would be unfair. You should try to ease them into this." Callie seemed to contemplate this while Arizona was on the edge of her seat waiting for a reaction.
"What are you, some coming out guru? Do lesbians come from all across the land seeking your advice?"
Arizona was relieved by Callie's disgruntled quip. Part of her was scared that Callie would go on the defense and go all 'you can't tell me what to do I'm a rock star.' A witty reply was something she could happily work with.
"I had a good experience telling my family, great actually. It was terrifying for me at first, I had no idea what to expect. I mean, telling my Marine dad, the Colonel, that his little girl likes girls could have gone a lot of bad ways, but it didn't. Telling my family was so easy because they saw it coming, probably even before I did. I mean it took me longer than it should have to realize that the posters of Cindy Crawford and Jennifer Beals all over my room weren't exactly typical. I'm not trying to control this or tell you what to do; I'm just trying to make it easier on you. If you want to tell them now I'll march right into that house and them exactly who I am and what we are to each other."
Arizona popped up and strode towards the front door. Whether it was just to make a point or was her actual intent she wasn't certain. She didn't have to know because Callie put her hand on the door Arizona had been about to open, effectively stopping her in her place.
"Whoa there. Point taken, I'm not ready. I was never going to tell them right now. I think it would be best if they didn't find out after you've spent the night anyway. If you're up for it though, what if we hang out here for a while, go swimming-" Arizona raised her eyebrows and Callie laughed. "Actual swimming, with swimsuits and no make out sessions. At least one family member will come out if we go outside though. I parked in the street last night so I'm sure they already know I'm here."
Callie's speech was rapid and she seemed kind of flustered and nervous. Arizona thought about saying no. She didn't love the idea of meeting the family yet, but she had just told Callie to ease them into the idea of them and hanging out as "friends" would be a good place to start. Damn her brilliant ideas.
"Sure Calliope. Actual swimming and possible getting to know someone in your family sounds good to me. I'm not going to like hearing them call you 'Calliope,' but I guess since they created you I'll have to suck it up." Callie threw her head back in laughter, one of Arizona's favorite sights.
"You are such a dork with that." Callie's laughing calmed down and she suddenly became very aware of the proximity of her body to Arizona's. The air in the room was suddenly as she brought up her other hand to the door as well capturing Arizona between them. She leaned forward into Arizona's body and kissed her. "I love it though."
They went and put on swimsuits that were already in the pool house and before long they were outside lounging poolside. Callie was grateful for the gold bikini she convinced Arizona to wear and Arizona felt much the same about Callie's deep purple one. Even though Callie didn't typically wear sunscreen Arizona had convinced her to. After Arizona spread some over her body she handed the bottle back to Callie and asked for a little help, turning around and raking her hair out of the way. Callie squeezed some of the lotion onto her hands to warm it before starting to rub them over the expanse of Arizona's back. She couldn't help but lean forward and kiss the back of Arizona's neck before continuing, much longer than necessary. They were both in their own little bubble again, until, pop!
"Calliope!"
The voice calling out her name sounded excited, but it wasn't Arizona.
