Jak and Daxter
The Lost Frontier

Chapter 1: Running out of Eco
It had been almost two months since the end of the city grand championship, where Jak had saved his friends from the poison that the late Krew's daughter, Rayn, had tricked them into drinking, by doing one of his favorite things… racing. But now he was asleep in his bed in the desert city of Spargus. His best friend, Daxter, was curled up at the end of the bed, also asleep. Jak had a sheet hanging over the window, so the late morning sunlight was having a hard time getting through; which was perfect and allowed the two to sleep in a bit. The world was calm now, the lurkers were more intelligent and didn't cause problems like they had in the time of Sandover, the last of the Metal-heads were dying out on their own, there was only about a handful of them left and the Dark Markers were no more than a bad memory. So, they had spent the last two months enjoying the peace.
Jak opened his eyes, got out of bed and stretched. He picked up a shirt off the floor- most likely the one he had worn the day before- and left the room leaving his friend to sleep a bit longer. He walked to the room that was just opposite to his and quietly cracked opened the door; there he found Keira still fast asleep in her bed. After the end of the grand championship the two had shared their first real kiss. Sure, they had kissed each other before, but not like they had in the Bloody Hook; usually they just shared friendly kisses on the cheek. It had taken them almost five years but they finally had a real kiss, and after that things started to get serious with them to the point that Jak just asked her to move in with him. She was more than happy to. The two didn't sleep in the same room although every once in a while, they shared the couch, but the two had not yet "slept" together, Keira didn't think it was right yet and Jak wasn't going to force the issue.
Daxter was no help; he kept making jokes about Jak and Keira sleeping together or lack thereof. The one he said the most was that Jak was afraid of Samos. Jak and Keira tended to play along, they both knew he was only joking and he never said his jokes to anyone other than them so they didn't really care and in truth they had fun playing along. Daxter also kept saying that he was going to move back into the Naughty Ottsel and help Tess with it; but he had been saying that since Keira moved into Jak's house and as of yet he hadn't. Not that Jak or Keira minded; the three of them had been together through everything so it wasn't like Jak was forcing him to leave. But Daxter just felt like- being that Jak and Keira were finally stepping up their relationship- he was becoming a third wheel to the couple. Also, there was the fact that he was twenty years old now, so he felt that he shouldn't have to mooch off of his friends, especially as he did own a bar in Haven that easily supported both him and Tess. But even so, he still liked living within Spargus, much like how Jak and Keira felt about the place: aside from the heat they all felt that Spargus was the closest thing to Sandover they were ever going to find and it felt like home.
Keira woke up and looked at Jak, who was just standing in the doorway, she smiled at him. She loved him so much; when he had asked her to move in with him, she wanted to say yes immediately- but there were a few things holding her back. The few times she had been to Spargus she liked it, the small problem was the heat and really after a while she didn't even notice it. The only real problem she had was leaving her father; she was still only eighteen, so she was still only a teenager. It wasn't that she couldn't take care of herself, it was that she didn't want to leave her father. During the racing season, she didn't like that he had treated her like she was still a child and at a point she put her foot down and did what she wanted, but the fact was that there was a part of her that would always be her daddy's little girl. Also after the Dark makers were gone, the two of them had fixed the old hut out in Dead Town and that was where Samos and Keira had lived; it was nice because Samos had used his power over green eco to create a shield around the hut that kept all the creatures out. But the best part about it was that from the inside of the shield the world looked as it had when they had lived there five hundred years ago. She loved it however… it was still just an illusion. Spargus was real, and when Jak had asked her to move out there with him Samos had encouraged her to go; she figured that after the final race he saw that he couldn't hang onto her forever. So Keira had moved into Jak's house and Sig gave her a job in the garage- to Kleiver's dismay; mostly because Sig had not only heard about but had also seen firsthand Keira's skills with mechanics, thanks to the races he had seen that she was better at fixing the cars than anyone else he knew, so she quickly became Kleiver's boss and he hated it. Kleiver also brought Veger along and made him help by having him climb into the hard-to-reach spots. So with that fact, Keira was also Verger's boss as well; something that Jak found amusing when Keira had told him how unhappy Veger was about taking orders from 'a demon's mate.'
But today, Keira wasn't going to work; she was going to spend the day with Jak. Daxter had said that he was going to go to Haven sometime that day to see Tess, so it was just going to be the two of them. She got out of bed and Jak walked away so she could get dressed, once she had changed into her usual outfit, she walked over to him and the two walked out of the house with Daxter still asleep. The two walked along the beach together. They sat down near the base of the gun turret, took off their shoes and socks and just let the waves wash over their feet. Even in the morning the water was warm, it was nice. Keira looked up at Jak and started to play with his goatee, she smiled a little, "Are you ever going to get rid of this?" She asked.
Jak smiled back at her, "Do you want me to?"
She shook her head, "Not really. You wouldn't look right without it."
Jak chuckled, "You really think so?" He asked, wrapping his arm around her shoulder.
Keira nodded, "It would be like if you changed your voice… it just wouldn't be right."
He laughed, "Well, what if I got rid of my goatee and just stopped talking altogether?"
Keira also laughed and looked at him, "You going to grow your hair back out too?" She asked, running her hand through his short green-blond hair.
"I don't know, maybe?"
Keira rested her head on his shoulder, "It just wouldn't be the same." The two just sat there quietly; really it wasn't that early, it was closer to the afternoon than anything else, so the two of them just sat there as the morning rolled away. Just talking about the past and what the future could hold for them, it truly was a nice moment in Jak's life.
However, Haven city wasn't nearly as peaceful. Spargus was a small city on the coast of the wasteland; with it being so small and in such a harsh place the people there use very little eco. Instead, they used the wind to get the little power they required and the only eco powered lights were in their homes, but at night fire was used to light the streets. So really, eco wasn't something that they needed, most of the eco in the city was green eco and that was at the hospital for obvious reasons.
But Haven was another story; the city was much bigger than Spargus and they used eco for everything; to run their zoomers, lights, appliances and their wall. There had always been a bit of an eco-shortage but the city always had emergency storage of the stuff. However, in recent years it had become harder and harder to find, to the point that none of the small areas near the city had any left. The Governess, Ashelin -who was more like a Queen really- had known that the city was running out of eco even when her father was ruling it, but he never did anything about it (partly because he would give eco to the Metal-heads) and now nearly three years after his death she was the one who had to deal with it and things were not going well. The power would go off in random parts of the city without any warning; it was so bad that places like hospitals and schools kept their backup generators on as much as they could, but even those needed eco and couldn't run for more than a few days before needing to be recharged. It got to the point that all the schools in the city had to be closed until more eco could be found. Needless to say, that the school age children of the city were the only ones that could find anything good to say about the lack of eco, especially the ones that couldn't drive.
This was getting out of control; Ashelin didn't know what to do. She didn't know where to find more eco and she didn't know why all of a sudden it had become such a big problem. But if something wasn't done soon then the city would be out of eco, which would mean that there would be no power; even the zoomers would not work and eventually the eco batteries in hand-held devices would die as well. There would be nothing. The only thing that Ashelin could think to do was ask Samos for advice. After all, he was the sage of green eco, if anyone could at least point her in the right direction he could.
Samos came to the new palace –which looked a lot like the old one just not nearly as big- he found her and Torn talking in one of the many rooms. "Glad you could come." Ashelin said.
"Anything I can do to help. But I don't know what I can do; things have not been going well for me."
Torn looked at him confused, "What do you mean?"
"My eco powers are not as strong as they once were I'm afraid. I believe it has something to do with the lack of eco in the world."
"World?!" Torn and Ashelin asked.
"Yes," Samos answered, "it's not just Haven that is losing eco but the entire world, there is almost none left."
Ashelin and Torn looked at each other. "Well then what do you suggest?" Torn asked.
Samos thought for a long moment, "I have heard of a place that is said to lead to a vast amount of eco."
Torn crossed his arms; "Even if this place did have some eco, who's to say that it would still be there?"
"This place is where eco allegedly comes from. If that really has dried up, then the world truly is out of eco and there is nothing we can do."
"Okay then," Torn said, "Where is this place?"
Samos looked at them, "The edge of the world."
Ashelin's eyes widened, "The Brink?"
Torn looked at her, "That doesn't exist."
Ashelin looked at him, "Yes, it does." Torn and Samos both looked at her, "My father told me about it… after I had found out about The Dark Warrior program." She said.
"Your father knew about the Brink?" Torn asked.
"He didn't know much, and that's not important right now. What is important is that we find more eco."
"Right," Torn said, "I'll go and…"
"No," Ashelin said, "I need you here, you're the commander of the guard, remember? If we run out of eco there will be chaos and I'll need you to help keep the city in order."
"Well then who are you going to send?" Torn asked, a little put-out by Ashelin telling him he couldn't go.
She couldn't keep a small smile from stretching across her face, "Who do you think?"
Samos and Torn also smirked. "He's not going to be happy about this." Samos said.
Ashelin chuckled, knowing they were all thinking for the same person, "I know."
Back in Spargus, Jak and Keira had returned home, after spending a few good hours on the beach. Their croca-dog, Mutt, walked up to greet them; Mutt was a very big dog, so he tended to spent more time outside the little house, but sometimes he liked to be inside with his family. Keira started to pet him and Jak walked up to his room. It seemed that Daxter had woken up and had left sometime after Jak and Keira had gone out that morning, he walked back downstairs and found Keira playing tug-a-war with Mutt. The large dog could easily pull her around the house (he loved to pull Jak everywhere), but with Keira he was always gentle and just pulled softly "Daxter left." Jak said.
"Well then," Keira said, now not pulling nearly as hard on the toy, "I guess it's just going to be you and me for a while." Mutt growled at her a little, Keira looked at the dog and smiled, letting go of the toy. Mutt went to go sit in the corner with it, Jak came to sit down next to her, "So what do you want to do?" She asked, looking up at him.
"Um… I don't know." Jak said, "Really, I just want to enjoy the fact that I don't have anything to do." Keira rested her head on his chest and he held her close.
However, the two didn't sit there long before there was a knock at the door; Jak groaned a little and got up to see who it was. He opened the door and found Sig standing on his door step with Ashelin and Samos behind him. Jak looked at them a little shocked that they had just come out of nowhere, but regardless he stood aside and let them in. Keira was glad to see her father, and Sig and Ashelin took a seat. Sig looked at Jak, "We've got a problem." He said as Mutt walked up and sat next to the king.
Jak looked at him; anytime he heard that… something bad happened and he had to fix it. "What's going on?" He asked, knowing that he was going to regret it.
Ashelin looked at him, "The world is running out of eco." Jak and Keira looked at her, not believing what she had said. "Haven is almost completely out."
"And what do you want me to do about it?" Jak asked, crossing his arms.
Ashelin took a deep breath, "I need you to go to the Brink and find more."
Keira looked at her, "The Brink? But that-"
"Doesn't exist? Trust me, it does, and it's supposed to be where all the eco comes from," she looked back at Jak, "I need you to go out there and find a way to get the eco flowing again."
Jak looked at her, "Why can't you send Torn, or one of your other soldiers? Why does it have to be me?"
"Torn wanted to go, but I told him that I'm going to need all of my guards in the city when we run out of eco."
"But why send me?" Jak asked, "I'm done saving the world, why can't someone else do it? Why does it always have to be me?" Keira walked over to him, his tone was getting more and more agitated with each word.
She put a hand on his should, "Jak, there isn't anyone else who can do this, you know that."
Jak looked at her, "Keira, part of the reason I don't want to go is because I don't want to leave you behind."
Keira smiled, "Well you're not going to; because I'm coming with you."
"… What?" Samos asked, "Keira you-"
Keira looked at her father, "Daddy, I know what you're going to say; that I can't go because it's too dangerous, because you don't want to lose your little girl. We've had this conversation already. You can't stop me, I'm going and that's the last I'm saying about this." Samos sadly looked away from his daughter; she was right; they had had a similar conversation during the racing circuit. He couldn't stop her then and he couldn't stop her now. He looked back at her and, giving her a sad smile and nodded.
Jak pulled her in close, "I guess if you're coming then I can save the world one more time." He pulled away from her and kissed her forehead and then he looked at her, "But we have to stop in Haven first." Keira looked at him, "No way is Daxter getting out of this."
Keira smiled but then she thought of something, "How are we going to even get to the Brink?" She asked.
"I've got that taken care of." Ashelin said. "Just start packing, you're leaving tonight."
Jak and Keira looked at her. "Tonight?" Jak asked.
Ashelin looked at them, "The sooner the better, I'll meet you two at the gates." And then she walked out.
Jak looked at Sig who was just petting Mutt, "Do you mind watching him while we're gone?"
Sig looked at him, "Sure." He said, "How long do you think you'll be gone?"
Jak and Keira looked at each other, "I don't know," Jak said, "I don't know how far away the Brink is. I don't even know where it is."
"According to legend," Samos said, "the edge of the world is to the west."
"Yes but… west of where?" Keira asked.
"Everywhere." Samos stated as if it was obvious.
"So all this time," Sig said, "we've been living on an unfinished world and didn't even know it."
"Lazy ottsels." Jak mumbled. "Well, I'm going to pack." He said, walking away from Keira.
Keira was going to follow him upstairs to get a few things for herself when her father stopped her, "Keira," she looked at him. He took a deep breath and looked up at her, "You're right, you're not the little girl you used to be, and I'm not as young as I once was."
"Daddy?"
"I've been the sage for a long time, and I think it's about time I retire from it."
Sig looked him, "Can you do that?"
"Yes," he looked back at Keira, "as long as there is someone to take my place."
Keira looked at her father, "But- but Daddy I can't even channel eco, how am I supposed to be a sage?"
Samos shook his head, "You can channel eco, Keira."
"How do you know?" Keira asked.
Samos smiled, "Because you're my daughter. I can sense your power just as I can with Jak's.
Sig looked at her, "I didn't know you had that kind of potential."
Keira looked at her hand, "Neither did I." She looked back at her father, "This isn't something you thought you should tell me before now?"
"I've been thinking about it ever since you moved out here. While you, Jak and Daxter are out on this mission I want you to try to unlock your power so that you can become a sage."
"You're going to be a sage?" Jak asked, coming up behind her with two bags. Mutt was not happy to see luggage being packed.
Keira looked at him, "I… I guess I am." She smiled, "But I don't know anything about channeling eco."
Jak smiled, "I can help you with that." Keira kissed his cheek. Jak's smile widened, "Come on, Ashelin's waiting for us. We should go." Samos followed them as they headed out. Mutt started to cry as they turned to the door, Jak and Keira looked back at him, "It's okay Mutt, we'll be back." Jak said.
"Good luck cherry." Sig said as Mutt lay on the king's feet. Jak smiled and he led Keira and Samos out of the house.
Ashelin was waiting at the gates when Jak, Keira and Samos came up to her, "You guys ready to go?" She asked.
Jak and Keira looked at each other and smiled, "Yeah," Keira said, "We're ready." The four of them began to walk out of the gate.
They found Kleiver working on one of the cars, "Where are you going?" He asked Keira.
"Away, and I expect this garage to be in good condition when I get back." She said not even looking at him. Kleiver sneered as Keira left.
They got to Haven and headed for the Naughty Ottsel; they walked in and found Daxter and Tess sitting on the bar. The two didn't seem to know that anyone had entered; they were too wrapped up in themselves. Jak cleared his throat as the two ottsels moved closer to each other to kiss. Daxter glared at his friend, "What, did you really need to follow me all the way to Haven?"
"There's a slight problem." Jak said.
"You talkin' about the lack of eco in the city? Tess already told me."
"It's not just the city," Keira said, "it's the whole world."
"What?" Tess asked, "That can't be right, how could the whole world be running out of eco?"
"We don't know, but Jak and I are going to find a way to get more."
Daxter looked at Jak, "Another save-the-world adventure?" He asked, Jak just shrugged, "And your bringing Keira along for the ride?" Jak nodded. Daxter looked at Tess and then back at his friends, "Well, you're hopeless without me so I guess that means I have to go too." The three smiled, "One last adventure for the dynamic duo! So ah… where are we going?"
"The Brink." Jak said.
Daxter and Tess looked at him with shocked looks on their faces. "Um… you want to check a map?" Daxter asked, "Because last time I looked the Brink didn't exist."
"Well Ashelin said it's real." Jak stated.
Daxter looked at Ashelin, "And how do you know that?"
"That's not important right now." Jak rolled his eyes, annoyed, remembering the last time she withheld information she had deemed unimportant. Ashelin didn't notice this and continued, "You three need to get to the hellcat and get going."
Keira looked at her with a disapproving look "We're taking a Hellcat all the way to the Brink? Really?" she asked, knowing that the hellcats that the guards flew around the city would not get them all the way out there. Those could barely make it to the wasteland and back without needing to be refueled.
"It's a different model, don't worry. It's made for long journeys."
Daxter looked at Tess, "You don't mind if I go, do you?" He asked.
Tess shook her head, "Of course I don't mind. It's what you do after all; save the world." She kissed his cheek which made Daxter ears and tail stand straight up and a smile to stretch across his face, "Just don't be gone too long, okay?"
Daxter smiled and held her close, "I'll be back as soon as I can, and you just take care of the place, K?"
"Don't worry about me, Daxter, I'll be fine." The two pulled apart and Daxter jumped onto the floor, "Daxter," he looked back at her, "I love you."
Daxter smiled, "I love you too Tess baby." And then the five walked out, leaving Tess still standing on the counter. After they left, Daxter jumped onto Jak's back and hung onto his shirt, being that Jak didn't have the shoulder pad that Daxter sat on.
The hanger was in the New Haven section of the city right next to Freedom HQ, when they walked in, they found Torn waiting for them standing next to a Hellcat. But this one was different from the ones that flew around the city; for example, it had a windshield and the floor of it had carpet. It also had three seats whereas the other hellcats only had two, and had a place for the gunner to stand. But the big difference was this looked a lot more like a plane than anything else that flew around the city. Torn looked at Jak and Daxter, "It's about time you showed up." He looked at Keira, "You taking your girlfriend with you?" He asked as a joke.
"It was her idea." Jak said.
Torn looked at Keira and then back at Jak, "Wait, you're really taking her with you?"
"Sure, I wouldn't want to go to the end of the world without her."
"Well you got sappy." Torn said, "Now look, we don't have too many of these and they're very expensive to build. So, in other words, bring it back in one piece, Jak."
Jak smiled and rolled his eyes, "And there's another reason to bring Keira."
Daxter climbed into the hellcat, "Can we get this show on the road already?"
Jak looked at Keira, "You ready to go?" He asked, taking her hand.
"Just one moment." She said, looking to Samos. Jak nodded and went to put their bags into the Hellcat while she said good-bye to her father. Keira walked over to him and hugged him, "Good-bye Daddy." She said.
Samos hugged her back, "Good-bye Keira. Be careful out there, okay?"
"I will be. I love you Daddy." She whispered.
"I love you too." He let her go and Jak helped her into the Hellcat. Samos walked over to Jak, "Can I have quick word with you?" He asked. Jak nodded and followed him a little away from the Hellcat, "I probably don't need to ask this but… you will take care of my daughter, right?"
"Of course I will. I promise."
Samos smiled, "I know you will," then he laughed a little, "I can't believe that the three of you are all grown up, it doesn't feel like it was that long ago you three were just exploring our little village and now you're on your way to the end of the world." Samos took a deep breath, "Jak, I know how you feel about my daughter and I know how she feels about you-"
"Samos-" Jak started but Samos held up a hand to stop him from interrupting.
"-and I just want to say that whatever happens… as long as she's happy then I won't ever stand in your way."
Jak smiled, he didn't know what Samos thought would happen, but it was nice to hear him say that, "Thanks Samos." He said.
"HEY!" Daxter yelled, "We going or what?"
Jak looked back at Samos, "Well good-bye." He said, walking to the Hellcat and climbing in. Jak shut the top and turned on the engine. The three of them looked back at Ashelin, Torn and Samos, and smiled.
As Samos looked at the three in the hellcat, he got a brief flash of seeing them as the little kids he had watched grow up in Sandover. The Hellcat climbed higher and higher and only when he was looking at the bottom of it did, he feel tears fall from his eyes.
Keira looked down out her window, her father had just gone out of her view and she started to cry a little. Jak looked at her, "You okay?" He asked.
Keira wiped away her tears, "Yeah, I'm fine." They got out of the building and started to head west, to the Brink. The three couldn't help but to look back just one more time at Haven as they flew away, not knowing when they would come back.
