Author's Note: And we're back with a new chapter! Not much to say here other than that we are nearly done the temple. This has got to be one of the most boring temples of the game =.= Thanks to dorianmidonal for following the story, following me, favoring the story and for favoring me.
Chapter 9: Help is on the way
After the little nauseating moment there, we—or rather I—resumed my trek. This time, I was actually being smart by blowing up the human eating flower by using the frog bomb. I just realized that I should've done that before…
Anyways…
I then went back to the frog bomb so that I could cross the gap without being eaten alive. Seeing the two large boulders, I threw the bomb and they exploded though I had to hide myself so that I wouldn't be smashed from the large and small pieces. The new room was darker, barely having any light except for the lights that were ahead.
I could faintly hear the panic screech from the monkey that was across from me. Since the room was dark, I couldn't really see what enemies lingered here. Apparently it found me first so that was why I was currently flying through the air and then fell on my back hard, having the wind to knock out of me.
For a minute, everything seemed hard for me to breathe as if the lungs had closed itself but after a while I was able to breathe properly. Sighing with defeat, I plunged myself into the murky warm water—even though it was uncomfortable, it was a much better way to avoid those springy enemies that popped out of the bridge's floor.
When I arrived the torch part, there were more of the springy enemies but this time, I was careful to avoid them. Once I had lit up the torch to my right, a part of the stairs rose out of the ground; the same thing happened when I lit the last torch.
That being said, I climbed up the stairs and walked towards the door only to find that it was locked.
"No!" I grasped the bars of the door, shaking it as if that will have the monkey free.
Suddenly, something slimy and wet dribbled down my shoulder to the end of my arm.
"Why the heck do I always have to be slimed!?" I yelled to no one.
Midna rolled her eyes. "You don't use your eyes, do you? Look up! And besides I think you're going to be slimed much worse later on…"
I looked up and saw the Skulltula, lingering down from the ceiling. It dropped down to the floor in front of me. Acting on instinct, I used my sword to protect myself from the attacking pincers before I performed a horizontal slice. It wasn't really effective though.
I grunted when I found myself being pinned against the wall from the pincers as I struggled with my sword. I blocked it, yes, but the pincers were strong so that was why I had my back against the wall. In short, I was trapped…
Finally, it with a mighty push, the spider recoiled back and I was able to pinpoint its weak point by executing the ending blow. I groaned since I still needed a key to unlock the lock so I went all the way back, searching for the key. I also went to the top to get a good view and it was there that I had found the key or rather the chest. It was located on the top of one of the poles.
So, I jogged down the stairs and rammed myself against the pole. The chest fell down, undamaged and then I went to obtain the key. After the monkey was released, I was out of the room and back to the room to where it had the path that led to the dark room.
I did some more exploring in this little chamber, releasing another monkey to where it was necessary. I soon found myself back at the main chamber. The four monkeys waved their paws, indicating that they should follow me.
You remember where that "monkey fight" was, right? Well, that's exactly where we are. The four monkeys created an accessible path but one look down and I was suddenly scared. I mean, there was an abyss below…one wrong move and I will die.
"Scared?" Midna taunted.
"Ha. You wish…" I commented, gulping.
"Don't look down."
"Why do you care? Wouldn't you like to see me fall?"
She scoffed. "Whatever. If it helps, run."
Moaning, I took a few good steps back then closed my eyes, inhaling and exhaling. The monkeys seemed to be waiting for me…When I was ready, I charged forwards and then jumped off the edge, feeling myself flying for a short moment while inside of my head, I was screaming.
I'm not going to make it…I'm not going to make it!
Something firmly grabbed my hands, giving me a surprised gasp so I opened my eyes and saw that the first monkey grabbed my hands. Breathing out a sigh of relief, she proceeded to throw me to the second monkey. The third monkey was followed until I reached the last monkey who threw me to the other side.
I somersault to save myself from breaking anything.
"See? That wasn't scary. It's okay, Linky. All of us have scary moments." Midna cooed while cackling.
I glared at her. "Zip it."
She cackled…
I entered the new part of the temple but as soon as I did, wooden sturdy bars slid down causing me to turn around. I had to fight something, didn't I? There were a couple of poles scattered through the jungle room as well as a few gaps that were in the walls. Few dead leaves were small piles here and there.
Nonetheless, something caught my eye and it was that same baboon from before. It stood on one of the poles before lifting its weapon, having black power outlining the shape. It then threw the weapon, cutting down the deku babas that fell down to the ground. Their blue tongues was visible as it was slithering sideways, making me to cringe with disgust.
The two deku babas started to jump at me but I quickly did a spin attack which ended them. I then followed the baboon since that was the only idea I had at this moment. I had noticed how the baboon was standing after it threw the weapon which got me to think that maybe I have to ram myself against the pole…
Worth a shot…
I did just that and was proven right when the boomerang had struck the baboon's butt, causing it to fall. Guessing that its behind was the weak point, I attacked it as much as I could before it resumed to hop around the poles.
Since I knew what its strategy was, it was easy for me to defeat it. I did this two more times until the baboon was defeated though I found out that it got possessed by a parasite that lingered on its head. However, the parasite crumpled itself and it blackened.
Giving a moan, the creature shook itself to get back in order and it looked around as if it wondered who had saved him. Though, it suddenly got tense as it slowly turned its head before giving out a surprised screech and automatically hopped back on the poles which got me back into a fighting stance.
Maybe it wasn't done…?
I soon found out that it was done when the monkey had disappeared through the hole that led outside. A soft tinkling noise echoed throughout the place and I wondered where it came from until I looked to my right to see the same weapon only it looked different.
Sensing my presence, I gaped at it when it lifted itself from the ground as a cyclone of wind wrapped itself around it.
"I am the Fairy of Winds who resides in this boomerang. You have freed me from evil, and I now have my true power back. Please…Take it with you. Use it to aid your quest, and may both my power and my blessing go with you." it spoke in its soft gentle voice. The boomerang flew around, happily that it got its true power back.
It resided back into my hand once I caught it. I stared at its pure features. It was white with a bit of gold lining and it looked shiner than it was before.
"After you had a staring contest, can we go?" an impatient voice asked, annoyed. Midna hated when precious time was going to waste.
Why did she had to find me of all people? She didn't know…exactly…she just felt that I could help her…somehow. There was something different about me and it felt right…Midna couldn't really explain it as she didn't know herself.
I got out of the mini boss place with the help of boomerang and started to search the places of where I hadn't explored. My headache was getting a bit stronger throughout the search of the monkeys so of course, I want to get out of here.
The four monkeys that used to be on the rope weren't there and I also found myself, releasing another monkey while I had defeated the moblin.
"By the way, Link. That was one of your ancestors." Midna cackled.
"Oh real witty." I replied, sarcastically.
"Well, I guess there are still some monkeys you haven't freed yet. At this point, you should just save them all and see what you can get for it!"
She went back to my shadow as I had went to explore more of the temple. I also had gathered a boss key and I pretty soon found myself in a room where all the monkeys were gathered. The recent and last monkey in which I had rescued hopped to an empty spot as the rest of the monkeys welcomed the last of its kind.
They then walked on the branch to form a long rope. This was just like before where I had to defeat the mini boss. I safely made it to the other side and it was then that I stared at the big door.
"Ready?" Midna smirked at my hesitation.
I rolled my eyes. "As ever I'll be."
I opened up the locked door and went inside. The two huge doors shut each other but I was too focused of what was ahead of me. There was a medium size pool of murky water while three floating platforms were on the purple water. I squinted my eyes when I saw a small spot bubbling furiously.
The bubble began to expand and almost unexpectedly, something rose from the water giving me a slight heart attack. Two large deku babas emerged out of the poisonous water but I knew they were not that much of a threat. I studied the deku babas, wondering how I can fight them while occasionally avoiding their lunges.
I eyed the two frog bombs, instantly having an idea of what to do. I took out my boomerang and aimed at the frog bomb as well as one of the deku babas. The frog bomb went into its mouth, letting the plant to chew on it. It then exploded which caused the giant plant to sink down.
I did the same thing to the other plant and in the end, it died.
Was that it?
If it was, that was sure easy.
I suddenly narrowed my eyes when the frog bombs hid itself as if it knew something was coming big. Something else had shook the water and soon a large ugly monster rose out of the water, splashing the poisonous water. Some of the splash had landed on my skin.
The one eyed beast roared, instantly making me to cringe when I saw the eye in its mouth. The first part of the body was a bit thin but as it went down, it was a bit wide. The two deku babas were beside the large monster, representing body guards.
There were no frog bombs and I only have a boomerang, what the heck am I supposed to do?
"Any bright ideas?" I hissed.
Midna stared at the beast with open mouth but she pulled herself out of the gaze.
"Um…run around?"
I snorted. "Next."
"I don't know!" she exclaimed, sharply. "I'm not good at fighting strategies!"
"I can tell!"
She sneered.
So guess where I had ended?
Yeah that's right. I ended by running around.
"I feel like a maniac!" I said through my gritted teeth.
Midna pursed her lips. "Aren't you?"
"Touché." I growled.
A familiar noise came and I looked to my left and saw that same baboon who was up on the ledge of the open wall. It turned its body around as if it was making something and then my eyes widened when it showed the frog bombs.
Oh sweet merciful Din!
The baboon rode across the rope back and forth as I was trying to aim at it with my boomerang. At least I knew what to do. I'm gonna have to take out the so called lame body guards.
The two babas sunk down, leaving the vulnerable beast that sprouted out a jet of acid unexpectedly. I narrowly avoided the streak of acid in which it came from its mouth. Yet, a drop of acid splashed at the edge of my sleeve.
One strike came onto the big boss right after I killed the two "body guards" and two more times came on the huge brute.
I jumped into the air to deliver the ending blow where I knew that would finally end the fiend; it did. The creature thrashed its head back and around, trying to erase the pain that was in its eye but it couldn't. It gave a mighty roar, a final roar until it finally rose into the air only to blacken itself, indicating that it was in the decomposing stage.
The eye lazily dropped down, scaring the hell out of me before it fell to the ground as its blood oozed out of it. The evil that used to linger in the air was now gone but something felt off as if the invisible force was pulling something forwards like a magnet right after the floating particles that exploded from the plant. The object flew towards me, causing my curiosity to arise. It was a strange item; it nearly looked like Midna's helmet only maybe a bit longer and it was the color grey.
Black aura was emitting out which possibly had made Midna to be attracted to it since she came out, grinning wide.
"Eee hee hee! Well done!" she congratulated me though I couldn't make it out if it was a sarcastic one. "That's…what I was looking for."
"What is it?"
She smirked. "That's a Fused Shadow. It's what the light spirit called dark power…Do you remember what that spirit said? About how you had to match the power of the king of shadows? Could it really be so easy? Is this all there is to it? Eee hee hee!"
I frowned. I couldn't help but to feel that she's hiding something…again.
"There's a total of three Fused Shadows. I think the other light spirits have the rest…If you want to know exactly what Fused Shadows are…well, maybe I'll tell you if you find the other two. I guess you'd better do your best to find them, huh? Eee hee hee!" she grinned evilly, letting out her annoying impish laugh.
I rolled my eyes at her behavior. "It's not like I have a choice do I?"
She smirked, her evil grin growing wider. "Nope. No need to be so sad."
I sneered.
"So let's not waste any more time here when we could be looking for the other two…" she responded, lazily.
"How do we get out of here?" I asked, looking around.
"Simple." with a point of her index finger, a small zap of her power came and out came the portal. "I'll get you out of here…"
I widen my eyes while staring at it cautiously. "By using that thing? No way!" I insisted.
"Well wise guy what other ways can you use to get out of here? Your monkeys' friends can't and I'm pretty sure there's no exit underwater so you really have no choice…once again."
I groaned, shooting death glares at her who was currently cackling. The minute I stepped into the portal I had automatically regretted it. It felt really weird, feeling your body breaking into particles. Midna spun around, signaling that she was also getting out of this place.
It only took at least a second and I was back in Faron Spring where I heard Farona's voice echoing.
"Heroic Link…Do not think that Hyrule is now saved from the spread of twilight…Leave these woods and go to the west, where you will find the land protected by the spirit Eldin. There you will find those you seek…But know that these lands lie in twilight…They are now a dark realm covered by the clouds of dusk. If you set foot beyond the curtain of twilight, you will revert to your beast form, so be prepared." the spirit warned me. "Hero chosen by the gods, leave these woods and go west, to the land of the spirit Eldin."
I got deflated when the spirit told me. It wasn't over? I was sort of hoping that it would be…
Midna came out and of course, she had to ruin the moment.
"That's better. Searching should be much easier now. Eee hee!"
"Only you would." I added.
"But…Of course, you feel the need to go help the other light spirits, don't you?" she asked, rudely with almost hidden venom in her voice.
I narrowed my eyes. Did she not like the spirits or something? Did they do something to her?
I honestly didn't know and I'm not looking forward to change into the wolf again.
"Well, don't worry. When you turn into a beast again, I'll take good care of you."
I snorted. "I highly doubt it. Considering the fact that you always hit me, bruise me and yell at me." I added.
"You're being Drama Queen now can we go?" she asked, impatiently.
"Oh if we must."
"Yes!"
"Whatever." I stomped off into the familiar tunnel that will lead to Coro once I reached the fork of the road.
On the other hand, my stomach disagreed since it growled reminding me that I hadn't ate in days. Midna wasn't happy so of course I ignore; she's really not that important now. I finally arrived at my house—man, I just realized how hard it is to travel on foot without Epona—and went into the house to eat.
"That's good boy! Now, you need to listen to what I say from now on!" Midna replied.
Yeah that's right…we're back in the curtain of twilight. Hooray.
Not.
"Ahh, look! How lovely! The black clouds of twilight are so fetching today…" for a minute, I could've thought I had actually heard true happiness in her tone.
Maybe I was imagining…? How could she live in this?
"I feel so much more at ease here…" she spoke as if she was actually longing to be back in twilight. "And you look so much better like this than in those dusty old clothes, anyway."
I snarled, indicating that she can't go insulting them.
She ignored it. "Eee hee! So…let's get going!" she patted at my sides.
I rolled my eyes until I took off down the path but a third way down, something caught my attention. A strange yet familiar aura filled my nose when I looked at the fallen object.
Curiously, I honed my senses on to sniff at it and within a second, I jumped with recognition that it was the kids…Malo, Talo, Beth and Colin. Flashes of the kids appeared in my mind.
Where were they? Were they close? Are they alright? Did they turn into spirits too?
It would only make sense if they did turn into spirits, wouldn't it? But where are they?
If their scent—or rather Talo since he's the only one who would hold a weapon—is here then they would close by…right?
"See, isn't being a wolf more convenient?" Midna asked, snapping me out of my thoughts. "You've begun to reawaken as a wolf, I think. Eee hee!"
Having the kids in my mind, I quickly darted as I followed the scent while hoping that I could reach them in time.
But in time for what?
It's already too late, isn't it?
But a sudden loud bang caused me to halt since I had bumped into it which made Midna to snicker. The familiar snarl and growl was heard, instantly having me to spot the three shadow beasts. I quickly defeated them with the help of Midna's energy field—very handy, I knew she was useful for something—but I soon realized that all that work was for nothing since Midna pointed it out the bridge in front of us is inaccessible.
"Whenever you destroy those creatures from the darkness, a portal opens. You hear me? It's called a portal. You'd better remember that! And…it was in those woods we came through…" she told me. "Remember?"
I nodded. How could I not? I just have to pick if it was either North or South…honestly, I don't know. Soo…I chose to go to S. Faron Woods…erm…it was very hard to tell Midna to where to go so she had to ask and I would nod a yes or a no.
I looked around the S. Faron Woods only to discover that no bridge or any sign was there so we warped back to N. Faron Woods and it was there that I saw. It was leaning against the wall of the cliff, looking kind of sturdy which surprised me but it looked like it was going to break down any time soon.
Or maybe I'm just being paranoid…
"Wow! It's perfect, don't you think?" Midna asked.
Sure.
"What do you think? Should we take it?"
I nodded.
"Good little obedient wolf!"
I stiffened, trying not to rip her inner body parts and use it as decorations though it would be useless as she is a shadow. We went back with the help of the dark magic that gave me shudders every time we would use it. The bridge also went with us as Midna made it to be into particles so that we could "carry" it.
The bridge—in which we were on top of—swayed to the side unsteadily and with a loud THUD, it signaled us that the bridge was the perfect it.
"See? Just as I thought…Eee hee! So, isn't the power of twilight amazing?"
Oh totally…-sarcasm—
"Call me if you need the power again. It should help you find what we're looking for, don't you think? Alright! Let's keep going!"
At last, I was able to continue down the scent while attacking a few enemies on the path but then I was stopped again because Midna pointed it out that there were those enemies that looked like they were guarding the gate.
"What are they trying to keep in? Or out…?" Midna wondered.
I spotted a hole and dug through there and killed the two "bodyguards". When I entered the new place, the first thing I had noticed—other than being covered in twilight—was the annoying shadow beasts which I killed them.
They were really easy to defeat them now that I have Midna's energy field.
"To the hero…who was transformed into a blue-eyed beast…in the realm of shadows…in twilight…This way…" it spoke, weakly.
