Chapter 10
That night, I felt neither here or there about what I'd done. I mean, this attractive young woman just threw herself at me, and I rejected her in as a cold hearted fashion that I could. But then, I felt slightly proud. My brother had a long and well known history with women, and because of that people expect the same as me, so to refuse it, well, it felt good.
"Chris, you okay?" Lori asked, stripping me from my thoughts. It was that moment that I realized I'd been sitting there, staring in to the flames of the camp fire for the last couple of minutes. I looked up, and guess whose gaze I caught? Of course, Amy was staring straight at me. I quickly dodged her stare, and looked to Lori. She was sitting in a horribly decorated fold up chair, from Dale's RV no doubt, and Carl lay on the ground beneath her. "Yeah," I say, forming a smile on my face, "just daydreamin' is all."
At that moment, we all drop to silence. It was a controversy to the moment, it surrounded us peacefully, yet it brought along an eerie awkward feeling. Finally, Andrea broke the peace, "Where are you going?" She dragged all of our attention over to Amy, who was making her way to the RV. She turned, and with a smirk on her face replied, "I have to go pee, god, you try and be discreet around here" We all gave a chuckle at that, and Andrea joined in, although she seemed a little embarrassed.
"Well, as delicious and fun as it's been, I'm gonna go sit on watch" I said, rising out of my seat. "This wouldn't have anything to do with Amy walking off would it?" Shane prompted, that annoying smug smirk shining off his face. Everyone seemed to snigger in agreement, even Andrea. "No, it isn't, why do you ask?" I reply, trying to stay as cool as possible. "Well, you both took a long time out in those woods." And this time it wasn't Shane, it was Andrea. The verbal attack reminded me of what Amy had said yesterday. 'We both have annoying older siblings' but this time they were both attacking me. "Nothing happened! Ask her yourself!" I realised how defensive I was becoming, and decided to let it go. When I turned to look back at the RV, Amy stepped out, and stepped closer to the walker that was about to kill her.
A piercing shriek sent all of us into panic as the walker bit into her arm. "Shit. They're everywhere!" Shouted Morales, the Latino man. As I stood there, my body paralysed with shock, I felt Shane's hand pat me on my back, giving me life once again. He slid his pistol into my hands and our eyes met, he had a confident, stern look on his face, and it told me that he needed me to act.
I took the piece, and grasped it in my right hand, wrapping my finger around the trigger. I heard the blasts of Shane's shotgun ringing in my ear, and saw more walkers approaching Amy. Hurriedly, I moved forward, just behind Andrea, who was in full on panic mode, trying to reach her sister. One of the walkers, the one that had bit Amy, swung an arm towards her, and she fell backwards in fear. I threw myself at the walker in front of her, and crashed it into the RV. It was a battle of strain as the walkers teeth grew alarmingly close to my neck. Another walker approached from the side, forcing me to divide my attention between the two. I pulled my gun arm free, and aimed it at the walker to the side. Bang. It dropped to the ground. I turned back to the walker I was holding against the RV, and smacked it over the head with the pistol. I stumbled backwards, and raised the gun. With one pull of the trigger it was dead.
I heard could here complete chaos somewhere in my jumbled mind, I heard the walkers growling, Shane's shotgun bursting repeatedly, and the piercing screams of our loved ones. Thankfully, a new burst of weapons and shouts came onto the scene. Rick, Glenn, Daryl and T-Dog were back.
They picked off the remaining walkers one at a time, and finally, we were safe, though it did not feel it. I managed to pull myself on to my feet, and as I did, my eyes met Shane's. He looked at me with an expression as if to say "that was too close", and he was right.
