Ch. 1 Repentance

"Dear heavenly father, we ask that you rebuke that defiant spirit." Pastor Robert Hayes preached with his wife, First Lady Denise Hayes, and their youngest child, Tabitha. Or Tabi for short. It was a Saturday morning, and they were currently parked outside of Tabitha's school, Shermer High.

"Yes, and we ask that you lead her back into your gracious light, father. We also ask that you remind her that this degenerate behavior will not be tolerated." The first lady adds.

"Amen." Pastor Hayes wraps up the prayer, glaring daggers through the rearview mirror at his daughter.

Meanwhile, in the backseat, Tabi was sobbing. "Amen. Daddy, I really am sorry." A soft watery voice, Tabi apologized for the billionth time since she got detention.

"If you were really as sorry as you claim to be you wouldn't have done it in the first place." Pastor replies.

"Y-yes, sir." Tabi sniffles, wiping her eyes on her sleeve.

"And if you ever pull something like this again, we will yank you out of that school, understand?" The first lady warned.

"Yes." she nods.

"Yes, what?" First lady asks through gritted teeth.

"Yes, ma'am." Tabi corrects herself.

"Now get in there and I expect those verses done by the time you get back in this car." Pastor commands.

"Finish crying and you better not slam the door on your way out." First lady demands.

"Yes ma'am, yes sir." She finishes before grabbing her backpack and walking into school. She hopes nobody sees her cry. She shouldn't be crying anyway. She made the mistake of skipping gym, so she can deal with the consequences. And it's not as if her parents yelling at her was an everyday occurrence. They just expect better out of her and her siblings.

If Tabi or her siblings acted poorly, then it reflected poorly on her parents. Which in turn reflected poorly on their church. Nothing could reflect poorly on the church.

Tabi makes her way to the library for her first ever detention. She doesn't really go there. She wasn't allowed due to all the secular books in it. She's the first one there. Not wanting to be in anybody's way, she chooses a table in the back and starts pulling out her things for the day. One of those being her punishment. She has to write Psalm 68:6, one hundred times. She's only up to sentence twenty. Hopefully, she's able to finish them by the time she leaves.

Tabi begins to write her sentences for a few minutes before somebody walks in. Tabi looks up seeing a speck of fiery red hair. Instantly, she knew who it was. Claire Standish was one of the most popular girls in school. Everybody knew her. She had even won homecoming queen. At least that's what Tabi heard. She wasn't allowed to go. Tabi had never talked to Claire. She's way too nervous to say hi.

So, she'll just go back to her sentences instead. She did.. Until he walked in. Brian Johnson. He's one of the smartest guys in her grade. If you asked Tabi, he's kinda cute. He sits next to her in trig and he's had her completely captivated ever since he asked to borrow a pencil. Then proceeded to command the classroom as he talked about breaking down vectors.

He makes her so nervous. Too bad she can't do anything about it. She wasn't allowed to date until she was eighteen and her parents had to approve of the guy. Still, that doesn't stop her from talking to him.

"Hi, Brian!" Tabi greets him nervously.

At the sound of his name, Brian looks up and sighs in relief at the sight of a familiar face. "Tabi, hi!" he greets walking over to her.

"Hi, uh how are you?" Tabi asks, trying to keep up the conversation.

"I'm okay! I'm surprised to see you here." He pointed out.

"Yeah. I skipped gym because I didn't want to climb rope." She explained shyly.

"Oh yeah, I don't blame you, the gym is hell." He laughs.

"Yes. Uh, why are you here?" She questions, hoping that she wasn't prying. She didn't want to freak him out.

Brian pauses and looks at her with widened eyes. Had she taken it too far? "Nothing important." He tries to quickly dismiss before taking a seat at the table in front of her.

"Oh, okay." Tabi nods as another person walks in.

It was another guy. He was wearing one of those sporty jackets. She has no idea who he is, but he carries himself like he's an important person. Maybe he was. Tabi watches as the boy takes the empty seat next to Claire. If only Brian could've sat next to her. She'd still be nervous but at least she'd have someone to talk to. Brian turned around just as Tabi was restarting her sentences.

"What are you working on?" Brian asked.

Tabi looks up at him embarrassed. "It's my punishment. My daddy wants me to write Psalm 68:6 one hundred times." Tabi explains.

Brian's face crumples up in confusion, "What is Psalm 68:6?" he asked.

"God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land." Tabi recites from her piece of paper.

"All that because you skipped gym?" He gasped.

"Mhm." Tabi sounds off.

"I am so sorry, Tabi." Brian apologizes.

"It's okay. I did it to myself." Tabi brushes off.

Claire and sporty begin to laugh. Tabi thought maybe they had heard her verses. That's when she sees the real reason for their laughter. Another girl had just walked into the room. She was clothed in all black, kept her head down low, and moved as if she didn't want to be seen. She doesn't seem like the happiest person. It is detention. Who could be happy here? The girl sat at the table next to Tabi's with her back turned to the room.

Upon further look, the girl seemed sad. There was no reason for Claire, Sporty, and even Brian to laugh at her, Tabi sits her pen down and turns to the girl.

"Hi!" Tabi greeted her softly. The girl turned around and glared. "I'm Tabi and you are?" Tabi continues to introduce herself. The girl just groans and turns away again.

"Tabi? Why'd you do that?" Brian whispers to her as she turns back around.

"What? I was just being friendly." Tabi shrugged.

"She doesn't seem like the friendly type." Brian warned.

"How do you know? Have you ever talked to her?" Tabi asks. She's not one to judge. Especially when someone was a complete stranger. For all Brian knew this girl could be perfectly nice.

"No way." Brian replies with a headshake.

A shadow looming Brian interrupts their conversation. They both look up and are scared by what they see. The person over them was John Bender. He was the biggest bully in Shermer High. Like Claire, everybody knew him. Unlike Claire, he wasn't very popular among the student body. From what Tabi's heard he drinks, he smokes, is disrespectful to authority, and rules Shermer's halls with fear.

Tabi's never seen him in the flesh until now. He looked just as intimidating as everyone claims. John glares at Brian forcing him to move to the Tabi on the other side. A decision that does not sit right with her. She wants to interject but she's afraid of how John would react to her. Luckily, Vice Principal Vernon walked in.

Tabi didn't carry an opinion on Vernon. To her, he was an authority figure. Someone to respect and obey. He hadn't even been hard on her when he gave her the Saturday school.

"Well… Well here we are! I want to congratulate you for being on time." Vice Principal Vernon addresses the room.

Claire raised her hand to speak. She believes that she doesn't belong here. Which is odd. This wasn't a plane! There was no first class detention.

"It is now seven-oh-six. You have exactly eight hours and fifty four minutes to think why you're here and. To ponder the error of your ways." Vernon announces. Tabi can say here and now that she has pondered her ways and will never skip class again.

Being here, writing the sentences, and the disappointment on the look of her parents' faces was enough for her.

"You may not talk, you will not move from these seats. Matter of fact, we're gonna to try something a little different today. I want an essay on who you think you are. No less than a thousand words." Vernon explains while he's yanking a chair out from underneath John's legs.

An essay? There was no way that Tabi was going to finish an essay and her sentences at the same time. If she didn't do those sentences her parents are just gonna make her write more. "This a test?" Tabi heard John ask while Vernon passed out blank pieces of loose leaf.

"Good morning, Vice Principal Vernon." Tabi greeted when he passed by her. Vernon nods and slides a piece of paper on her tabletop.

"When I say essay, I mean essay. Not a single word repeated a thousand times. That clear, Mr. Bender?" Vernon finished. "Crystal." John spoke up. "Good. Maybe you'll learn something about yourself. Like if you wish to return." He mused.

Tabi felt the need to speak up and confirm that she would never be in here again. Too bad Brian beat her to the punch.

"That'd be a no for me, sir." Brian assures. Vernon stared at Brian as if he was having none of it.

"Sit down, Johnson." Vernon rudely commanded.

Brian must've done something really bad for Vernon to act like that towards him. "Thank you, sir." Brian nods as he sat back down.

"My office is right down that hall. Any monkey business is ill-advised. Any questions?" Vernon asked.

"Yeah, I have a question." John spoke up. Vernon nods his head in acknowledgement. "Does Barry Manilow know you raid his wardrobe?" John taunts.

Tabi had no clue who that is, but judging by the look on Vernon's face, he must not be a very fashionable person.

"I'll answer that question next Saturday. Remember, you mess with the bull and you get the horns." Vernon threatened with a hand gesture.

He leaves and the room gets quiet. This silence is broken by John saying, "That man is a brownie hound,"

Gosh, the end of the day couldn't come fast enough.
