Chapter 9
You Drive, I'll Ride
Dusk POV
"Prime!" Fowler's voice yelled as Dad, Arcee and I walked in, "PRIME!"
"Special Agent Fowler," Dad greeted, "To what do we owe the…"
"What else?" Fowler interrupted, "'Cons. I chased them off with some hard ordinates, but not before they blew me out of the sky!"
"Again?" Miko snickered from the railing.
I couldn't help but crack a grin.
"They tried to smash and grab for the Dingus," Fowler said.
"The whatsit?" Arcee asked, confused.
"Dynamic Nuclear Generation System aka D.N.G.S," Fowler explained.
He then showed us a video image of the Dingus.
"It's a prototype energy source I'm porting to the coast for testing," he finished.
"That's absurd!" Ratchet scoffed, "Why would Starscream bother with such primitive technology?"
"I'm guessing to make a big fat primitive weapon of mass destruction on! If this baby were to meltdown, it would eradiate this state and the four next door," Fowler said.
"Uhh, did Agent Fowler say what state he was currently in?" Raf asked worriedly.
"I'm a sitting duck here Prime. I need you to spin up your Bridge and send the Dingus to its destination before the 'Cons come back for it," Fowler said.
"I'm afraid sending such a volatile device through a Groundbridge is out of the question. If there were to be an accident during its transmission. The radiation of which you speak, could propagate through the Groundbridge vortex and harm all 50 states…and beyond," Dad explained.
"You got any better ideas?" Fowler asked.
"How about a road trip?" I suggested.
Dad looked at me.
"We'll Groundbridge there pick up the Dingus and transport it by road," I finished.
"And if the 'Cons tail us?" Fowler said.
"Um…phase two?" I said.
Soon, the preparations were made and all 'Bots except Ratchet and Jolt were readying to go through the Groundbridge.
"You're gonna need human back up," I pointed out, trying to sound convincing.
"You are to remain here," Dad simply put.
"And what if the 'Cons dopinpoint your location? You can't protect Fowler whilst fighting Decepticreeps," I said.
Well, it was the best excuse I could come up with…now to drive it home.
"His midsection says it all,"
Icing on the cake.
Amber began to cackle, her laugh ringing.
Dad said nothing, and then proceeded to transform. Then Arcee attached Dad's old trailer from the NEST days (I doubt it still has his Blackbird Armor in it...seeing as the Driller kinda messed it up badly) to him, which we found in storage labeled 'we might need it again one day'. He then made his way through the Groundbridge in vehicle mode.
"Swiftly Dusk," He said.
Is that a yes then?
I then ran off after them.
Did he drive off on purpose just to be a jerk?
I swiftly waved to the others before passing through the Groundbridge. We were in a forest terrain.
"You could say it's untouched…" I said.
"Yeah," Arcee said, smirking, "if it weren't for the giant dent Fowler's plane had left in it,"
We laughed.
Bulkhead and 'Bee loaded the Dingus onto Dad's trailer and then transformed, ready to get a move on. Arcee walked into Dad's trailer and closed the door behind her.
"You are coming with me," Dad said over bond.
I shrugged and started walking.
"Then I call shotgun," I announced.
Fowler slid into the driver's seat.
"Road trip! Road trip!" I sang, as I got into the passenger seat.
"You might be an adult, but you are sooo immature," Arcee said over comm.
"At least I get the window seat!" I called.
She snarled.
"SHUT UP!"
"Dusk what are you doing here?" Agent Fowler enquired.
"I'm your escort," I said.
"I am a government Agent and a military veteran I do notneed a child to escort me," Fowler argued.
Ok, child? Gee, I am beginning to see why Jack doesn't like being called that.
"Agent Fowler, when was the last time you went for a jog? Or went anywhere without the use of your jet? Andyour tie is way too short," I then put a patronizing arm on his shoulder.
He just looked at me.
"You are an American hero, but time has obviously made you tired and weary let me do this in honor of your name," I said, letting my parents' diplomacy drip from my words.
Agent Fowler was basking in the words 'American hero' and 'honor' and he held his head high.
I mentally face palmed.
"He was totally sucked in!" I thought.
"Well…of course I wouldn't want to upset an obvious admirer what sort of role model would I be? Of course you can escort me," He said proudly.
Then he leaned in close and put an arm around my shoulder, "I have so many stories to tell of my proud days,"
I inwardly groaned and Dad gave a low chuckle as Fowler grinned.
"That sounds…awesome," I said awkwardly scratching my head.
"Now who's got the better seat?" Arcee asked, cackling.
I growled.
"Now! Let's get this show on the road," Fowler announced as he clasped his hands together about to grab the wheel.
"Ah, ah, ah," Dad suddenly said, like he was telling off a kid who was about to touch some freshly baked cookies.
Sadly…I know how that is.
Don't tell anyone…but Dad's holoform, Orion…
Is an amazing cook. I swear on my overloading spark it's the truth! He only does it on extremely rare occasions, and he's the one who taught me. He once told me that an old girlfriend (maybe more?) taught him how to prepare a meal so that he could surprise her when she got home.
So he's smart, strong, and a cook…nice triple threat.
And those chocolate chip cookies were to die for!
I think he mixed something else in there too…because I always felt a little hyper when he let me have one.
"No need Agent Fowler, I will handle the driving," Dad finished.
All the adrenaline from Fowler had instantly washed away as he slumped back into the seat and crossed his arms.
"Its gonna be a long trip," he sighed.
"He has a control complex," I said shrugging.
Everyone started up their engines and headlights…for some reason.
"Autobots, roll out!" Dad ordered.
And we all drove off to the nearest road.
A few minutes on the road…
Kill. Me. Please!
I swear if I have to listen to one more of Fowler's glory day stories…I'm going to jump out of Dad's alt and fly back to Base on my own!
The most excitement I got was when Fowler was getting road rage over a senior citizen's slow driving.
He blasted the horn for a long while.
I covered my ears, refraining from yelling.
"Dude, lay off the horn!" I whined.
"Move it Gramps!" Fowler snapped, smacking Dad's steering wheel.
Dad gave a very low, almost imperceptible growl.
And then the car in front finally moved, I personally felt sorry for the driver of the other car, in fact he probably pulled over because he was having a heart attack.
I looked out to window to check.
Fowler continued to blast the horn.
"Agent Fowler, is that really necessary?" Dad asked, slightly annoyed.
"Aww, don't tell me your one of them text book drivers," Fowler complained folding his arms once again.
"You should have him teach you how to drive," I pointed out, "That wasn't fun either,"
"Simply because you would not heed my advice," Dad said, "On a dirt road, if you turn hard enough left, you will find yourself going right,"
"Left is right and right is left," I mumbled, "Makes sense…if you're in opposite land!"
"And yet how many times has that saved your life?"
I didn't answer.
"Dusk," Dad growled.
"Too many to count," I finally huffed.
"Exactly," Dad purred proudly.
'Bee suddenly swerved up in front.
As I sat there looking over the trees and rocky mountain sides I could hear faint sounds of a helicopter, nothing out of the ordinary, but I had this feeling that something was wrong.
"You feel that too?" I asked Dad.
"Something is amiss here…but I don't know what it is,"
"Best be on our guard, eh?"
Fowler then had his hands on the steering wheel, even though he wasn't really driving, either a force of habit or Fowler's still sore about not driving.
"You know, you're saving my bacon here Prime," Fowler then said.
"I am proud to be of service," Dad replied.
"Of course not like I'd need your help if you and the 'Cons had stuck to turn up your own corner of the galaxy," Fowler stated.
"Are you suggesting that no evil existed on your world before we arrived?" Dad asked.
"…Well…it was a…different evil," Fowler replied obviously unarmed, then decided to change the subject, "How about some radio, you seem like a Nashville sound kind of guy,"
I groaned and I felt Dad's gears clench.
Neither of us liked country music all that well. Dad was more into the classical music and I was too…but I still liked my contemporary stuff.
Country…heck. No.
Then that helicopter sound came again and this time it sounded closer, Fowler looked in the rear mirror.
"That's the one! The 'Run who shot me down. Who is he? Wingnut? Dingbat? Skyguy?" Fowler snarled coming up with the most creative names ever!
"Watch your rear views," came the voice of Bulkhead from Fowler's radio.
I looked in the rear mirror and saw a group of green cars with a black stripe going over the hood; they first formed a formation around Bulkhead….and then tried to get closer to Dad's trailer.
"Feeling a little constricted without the use of my fists here, boss," Bulk growled.
Dad let a low rumble run through him that only I could recognize as a warning growl.
"Remain in vehicular mode unless absolutely necessary," he ordered in his normal growling baritone.
"Oh c'mon," 'Bee started, "I can take 'em, let me please?"
"I said no,"
"But Dad…"
"No means no,"
"Sure told him," I snickered.
"A whole team of 'Cons," Fowler said.
Then Ratchet came in over the radio "What? I'm not picking up anything. They must be utilizing a cloaking technology,"
Then one of the green cars overtook Dad and 'Bee from the right, trying to box us in.
They tried cutting 'Bee off.
"Hey! Stop it!"'Bee whirred, "Dad…they're really trying my nerves…"
Then another green car pulled up to us from the left. Then its sunroof opened, and a…human stood up pointing a gun in Fowler's direction!
"Pull over!" The man ordered.
"Well I'll be dipped!" Fowler exclaimed.
"Our assailants are not Decepticons, they are human," Dad said over the comm. link to the others at base.
"HUMAN!?"
"Oh please," I heard Miko say, "Takin' on our 'Bots…they're road kill!"
"Just be careful, Dusk," Ben pleaded "Don't get yourself hurt,"
"Me?" I snorted, "Puh-lease,"
As the man was about to fire upon us, Dad steered into them catching them off balance and causing the man to fire into the road instead causing a small but deadly explosion. Then Dad speeded up.
"Who are these guys?" Fowler said really confused.
"Autbots maintain your cover, and apply minimal force. Disarmament only," Dad instructed.
Then another green car attempted to come in from the right again, weapons ready. But 'Bee reversed into him to stop him from proceeding further. Then what it looked like from where I was that the driver tried to overtake 'Bee, then 'Bee knocked him back again. Causing the car to swerve and then it caught on some rocks causing it to flip over onto its back, it was survivable to say the least…hopefully.
"One down," I said.
We were going fast round many bends; Fowler got motion sickness as he started gagging.
"Could use some air," he gasped.
Then Dad rolled down his window, Fowler stuck his head out.
"Prime! Bail right!" Fowler ordered.
So I looked in Fowler's rear mirror one green car was particularly close to us. Well that was until Dad knocked him over a cliff, fate unknown. Then with no warning, Fowler got out of the cab.
"What are you doing?" I demanded.
He was gone before he could even hear me.
I stretched over to take a look in the rear mirror. Fowler had restrained one of the men; he must've been trying to disconnect the trailer. I think Fowler was trying to interrogate him…well was…he got knocked out of his grip by a tree branch…fail.
I felt another car coming in from the right and I peered out my window.
"Dusk…" Dad warned.
"I got it," I growled.
I thrust out my hand and the tires on the car blew up, making it come to an abrupt halt.
"Good work," Dad purred.
"Really?" I asked, "You know how much I don't like doing stuff like that,"
"You're not a freak, Dusk, your power is unique, do not be ashamed of it,"
Fowler then made his way back to the cab he sat back in and buckled up.
Then a threatening voice came in over Fowler's radio.
"I do hope you take better care of the Dingus then you do your captives," The voice said.
Fowler then looked out the window as we saw the helicopter fly closer in.
"Special Agent William Fowler here, identify yourself!" Fowler demanded over the radio.
"I am Silas," the voice now confirmed as Silas said, "But of greater consequence to you. We are MECH. Fair warning, we will be helping ourselves to your device. Even if it means inflicting casualties,"
"Is that so?" Fowler said mockingly, "Tell me Si. What's the market price for a Dingus these days?"
"What makes you think we intend to sell it Agent Fowler?" Silas said.
Fowler was silent.
"There's a war brewing, between the new world order and the newest. The victor would be the side armed with the most innervated technology," Silas continued.
Fowler and I both looked into the rear mirrors, one of the green cars had made its way behind Dad's trailer, with an armed MECH Agent. He shot at the trailer three times, the next thing that happened was we felt a small explosion; did he blow a hole in the trailer?
Then we saw him stand up on the roof of the car readying to jump.
"Arcee, incoming," I said.
"They're breaking in!" Arcee said.
She gave a low, dark chuckle.
"And I finally get to have some fun!"
Oh boy.
"So Si? You think MECH has all the most radical tech?" Fowler said, gloating.
As the MECH Agent proceeded onto the hood of the car, we saw Arcee in her vehicle mode knock the MECH Agent and car rolling, taking with it another MECH car which blew up!
I stuck my head out of the window.
"He said disarmament only!" I yelled.
"Oh, whatever!" she snapped back.
"Later Si," Were Fowler's last words to Silas.
"Agent Fowler, do not take your 'Silas' lightly. Megatron preached the very same ideology before plunging Cybertron into the Great War that destroyed our world," Dad said warningly to Agent Fowler.
We then proceeded to phase two if we were ever pursued. Our rendezvous point was through a tunnel.
"There's our destination point," Fowler said.
"Autobots! Keep a tight formation," Papá ordered.
Then we all proceeded down the bank on our right to the train tunnel. We kept close to the train, as MECH tried to keep on our tail. Bulkhead then quickly transformed and fired at the tunnel to cause a cave in, stopping our pursuers.
Then 'Bee transformed and jumped onto the train, he then knocked on it. The train's doors slid open to reveal a man of military background. Dad's trailer then opened up like a cardboard box to reveal the Dingus. I gingerly made my way to the edge of the trailer and transformed, helping Arcee give the Dingus to Bulkhead who in turn gave it to 'Bee who then gently placed it into the train.
With phase two completed we didn't need to be as cautious or careful.
"Dusk, back inside," Dad ordered.
I sighed as I transformed back and got back into the seat right as we exited the tunnel.
"Air support? Ours or theirs?" Fowler suddenly said.
I looked out the window myself to see what he was talking about.
"Optimus…" Ratchet warned, "You have company…"
"'Cons," I said.
They then fired upon us with missiles; Dad did a sharp turn, making us be forced up against the back seats.
Then it felt lighter, that sharp turn must have unhitched the trailer, but it provided an alternative for the missiles.
It then looked like we had reached a dead end as we approached a grassy cliff edge. Dad swerved around to face the 'Cons who had now transformed.
"Agent Fowler, I am afraid that if you and we are to survive, it has become absolutely necessary to drop our cover," Dad told Agent Fowler.
By the time he said 'absolutely necessary' I had already bailed out of his cab.
Then Dad transformed, holding a slightly gagging Fowler in his hand.
I finished my own transformation sequence and engaged my blade and blaster.
We were all battle ready and the helicopter which occupied Silas, was now circling around us obviously intrigued.
Dad picked up Fowler and set him on a rocky ledge.
"Remain here," Dad told him.
"Will do," Fowler said.
"After a long road trip, it feels good to get out of the car stretch my legs and kick some tailpipe!" Bulkhead said, as he was the first in line to kick butt.
"I couldn't agree more, Bulk," I growled, twirling my blade.
And we all charged at the opposing side.
Dad took a 'Con down with one blow, while Bulkhead nearly did a body slam to another…seems like Miko and Amber have corrupted him with WWE. Arcee performed a bunch of lightning quick jabs to the 'Con's midsection and slashing his armor to ribbons as she did. 'Bee started performing a few boxing stunts he had been working on for a while.
I turned my gaze to the last 'Con.
"Bring it on, Small Fry," I growled, twirling my blade.
He charged and I danced out of the way.
"That the best you can do?" I taunted.
He tried slashing at me, but I blocked him easily, yawning.
"C'mon, I'm bored," I whined, "Here…let me show you how its done,"
And I delivered a crushing uppercut along with a nice roundhouse kick before finally finishing it off.
"Class dismissed," I chuckled, sheathing my sword.
Ah, I remember when Ironhide had said that.
"Prime!" Fowler yelled into the radio.
"Which one Fowler!?" I yelled back as I threw a Vehicon off my back and rammed the hilt of Sunscorcher into its faceplate.
"Optimus…you…doesn't matter!" Fowler growled, "Point is…Silas got wise to phase two!"
"I understand!" Dad called…right as a Vehicon rammed a tree into Dad's faceplate.
"DAD!" I shrieked as he fell over the cliff.
I turned towards the Vehicon, shaking angrily.
"You…you just made the wrong Halfling mad," I snarled…
And what happened after that?
I couldn't tell you even if I knew.
That's just what happens when I black out.
Jack POV
"Optimus is down!" Miko yelled.
"MECH's gonna grab the Dingus!" I shouted, "We need to think of something quick!"
"You mean…like a phase three?" Raf asked.
"Ok…" I muttered, "C'mon, Jack think! Alright…if MECH wants the Dingus…they have to get on that train,"
"Where are you going with this?" Amber asked.
"What if we get on board first!" Miko added, "You know…run some human on human interference?"
"PIT NO!" Ben yelled, right as Ratchet and Jolt yelled, "ABSOLUTELY NOT!"
"BEEEEEN!" Amber yelled back, "LANGUAGE!"
He glared at her.
"You're just kids!" Ben snapped.
"Yeah…that would be suicide," I admitted.
"Hel-lo! The United States of meltdown!?" Miko snapped, "Lives are at stake?"
"Yes! Yours!" Ratchet hissed.
Wait...so he does care about us!
"You not only want us to Bridge you into a confined space…but one that is moving at 90 miles an hour?!" Jolt yelled, "Are you nuts!?"
"I can't even count the number of ways that could go wrong!" Ratchet growled, "Mass displacement trauma…"
"Twisted limbs…" Jolt added.
"Metal burn..." Ratchet continued.
We all looked at him.
"Well, maybe not the last one…" Ratchet admitted, "Regardless! It is nearly impossible to fix Groundbridge coordinates on something moving at that speed!"
"Would it help…if we had access to the trains coordinates?" Raf asked, putting said coordinates on screen.
"Well…" the medics started, looking at each other.
"Let's give it a shot," Ratchet shrugged.
And he started up the Bridge.
"C'mon Miko, you're with me," I said.
I turned to the others.
"Stay here and help Raf, if just two of us go…then it'll be more room for us to move around,"
And we left without giving Ben and Amber time to protest.
When we got there, the guards were already knocked out.
"We're in," I said into my cell.
"I read you Jack!" Raf called, "The cellphone/comm. link patch works!"
I heard choppers and Miko and I ran towards the door and opened it. I looked up and saw the chopper preparing to land.
"Raf…MECH's landing on top of the train!" I said.
"In about 20 seconds…you're going to come to a fork," he said, "Brace yourself!"
Suddenly, the train tilted and we turned on a different track.
"Yeah! Nice going Raf!" Miko shouted.
I heard a thud and saw sparks shoot through the roof.
"So what'd that buy us? Ten seconds?" I asked.
"Raf is losing his touch," Miko agreed.
The roof fell in and Miko grabbed an axe (what have we learned since the Soundwave incident? Absolutely nothing apparently) and I grabbed the fire extinguisher.
"You want a slice of this?" Miko threatened, brandishing her axe, "Well do ya!?"
"What she said!" I added
They stared at us…and started laughing.
"Look at the little kiddies wanting to play hero," one scoffed.
"Why don't you both go run home to your mommies?" another jeered.
"And let their daddies play soldier," the last chimed in.
Ok. The first two jeers I could handle…
That last one…
That stung.
My dad left before I was born. Mom said that he was a great war hero, but…I never new him. These guys mocking the rank of soldier and of father…
That made me so angry that I couldn't see straight.
Authoress POV
The MECH soldiers continued to jeer at the kids…but they suddenly stopped.
Miko was too caught up in threatening them to notice that there was something off.
Jack shook from head to toe in anger, eyes blazing brilliant royal blue he suddenly knelt down and touched the floor of the train, a blaze of blue sparks flashed from his hands and his eyes never left the MECH minions.
The sparks traveled up the walls of the train from behind Jack and out of the metal walls, surging across the roof and up the legs of the enemies, shocking them violently.
The soldiers yelled in pain as Jack straightened up and his eyes dimmed. The boy closed his eyes and rubbed his head. He had no idea what had happened, just that the soldiers backed off.
"What happened," Miko breathed as the soldiers retreated.
"I dunno," Jack replied honestly.
"They just…left?"
"I guess…"
The two then looked out at the retreating form of the helicopter.
"Whoa," Miko said, grabbing Jack's arm for support, "We're pretty fierce,"
"Guess we are," Jack answered.
Miko POV
Suddenly, there was smoke up ahead.
"Whoa!" Jack yelled.
I held onto his arm tighter as the train shuddered.
"Ratchet! Jolt!" Jack yelled, turning back to the inside of the train, "MECH blew the train tracks! You need to Bridge us out of here! The soldiers too!"
"We've lost access to the train database!" Jolt yelled back, "We can't Bridge you back without your coordinates,"
Fear flooded me…this wasn't good. This wasn't good at all.
I put a hand on Jack's shoulder.
"Maybe we should jump?" I asked.
His eyes flashed.
"At 90 miles an hour?" Jack demanded.
"It's the impact or the meltdown, take your pick," I snapped.
He sighed, looking upwards with light blue eyes.
"What were we thinking volunteering for this?"
"Next time you need to do a better job of talking us out of these situations," I answered.
"Next time," he whispered, closing his eyes as they turned storm blue again.
"We can buy ourselves another few seconds if we're in the back of the train, right?" I asked.
"Miko…" Jack started, "At least…we're in this together,"
I came closer…and snatched Jack's phone from his grip.
"Raf this is important!" I ordered, "Make sure Bulkhead gets my guitar,"
Suddenly, a blur of scarlet and blue shot past us…
OPTIMUS!
"Don't read the will just yet!" Jack cried.
Suddenly the train lurched, Jack and I fell, trying to grab hold of the door. There was a loud screeching sound as the train finally ground to a stop.
Jack and I hopped out and saw Optimus walking tiredly towards us.
We waved sheepishly…right as I heard a chopper.
We all looked up, and a low growl emitted from Optimus' chassis…and there was a second one two, but I couldn't tell where it came from.
"You ok?" I asked Jack as he hadn't taken his eyes off the chopper.
He didn't answer.
"HEY!" I shouted, punching him in the gut…
I pulled back shaking my hand. Jeeze that hurt!
"What!?" Jack demanded.
"Are you ok?"
"Yeah, I guess…well, as ok as one can be when faced with certain death,"
"Yeah…" I agreed, "But that's the fun part,"
"Fun part?!" I heard Dusk demand, "You two could have gotten killed!?"
She walked towards us, covered in what looked like blue paint…but I knew that wasn't what it was. It was energon.
"Don't ask," she shuddered as she noticed my look, "It's better if you never find out,"
I shrugged.
"Ratch, can you get us a ride home?" Dusk asked.
A Groundbridge opened up before us and Dusk looked at me and Jack.
"Go on you two," Dusk ordered.
She didn't have to tell me twice.
A/N Next is Deus Ex Machina...personally, I like this one, basically because of the beginning. Miko's a fun character to write, she reminds me of my little sister and basically...she is the incarnation of most of us Transfans, who wouldn't go through that Groundbridge just to see some action? I know I would, so honestly I don't see why a lot of people see her as annoying. I see my sister instead.
