Chapter 10

To Be Still And Know

Miko POV

I sighed, tapping my finger against my history book.

"Pffft, detention, ugh!" I groaned, setting my book down on my desk and I laid my head on top of it.

Suddenly, I heard music outside the window.

I perked up and looked outside right to see Bulkhead pull up, radio blasting!

I looked at the teacher reading the newspaper…my eye caught the assignment on the board…geeze! What kind of demonic teacher assigns a hundred and fifty pages for homework!?

Luckily…the teacher wasn't paying attention…and I slipped out.

Amber POV

"YEAH-AH-AH-AH! REK-EK-EK-EK-EK! FEHK-FEHK-FEHK-FEHK-FEHK-FEHK! OW-OW-OW—YEEEEEEAAAAAAH!" Bulkhead and I both sang, I drummed on the steering wheel happily banging my head to the beat.

"I love this song!" I heard Miko cheer as she slid into the passenger seat.

"Hey half-pint rockstar!" I grinned as Miko started singing.

"Miko…" Bulkhead growled, "I thought you had a history report to do…did detention end early?"

Miko smirked and buckled up.

"Did for me," she replied smugly putting her hands behind her head.

She looked in the mirror and her face went white.

"Uh oh…here comes teacher!" she yelped, "And he doesn't look happy!"

I looked back…

"Oh Miko," I hissed, "You are so going to get it,"

She hunkered down in the seat, kicking Bulk's dash.

"STEP ON IT BULKHEAD!" she shrieked.

Said 'Bot groaned.

"Oh, Miko…"

"Amber! PLEASE!" Miko begged, hiding under her hand.

I got into gear and hit the gas despite Bulkhead's protests.

Once we were out of city limits, I let Bulkhead have the steering wheel and I relaxed back. See, this is why you guys don't let me out to pick up Miko…you should be expecting this by now!

And Bulkhead started the talk.

"Miko, I'm supposed to be your guardian," Bulkhead scolded, "Not your getaway car!"

"What's wrong with that?" I asked, "Sunny and 'Sides broke Dusk and I out of detention every once and a while,"

"Not. Helping!" Bulkhead hissed.

I shrugged.

"You can't just cut detention," Bulkhead continued, "What if your parents found out?"

"They live in Tokyo, remember?" Miko sighed, "And don't even worry about my host parents…I think I scare them,"

"Miko, listen," Bulkhead sighed as we pulled into Base, "If you fail high school you can't go to…uh…una…ada…kes…col…what's that word again?"

"Uh…college?" Miko supplied as the two of us got out and let Bulkhead transform, "Ugh! You sound like my parents!"

"Umm…aren't they Japanese?"

"They may speak a different language…but you say the same things!"

"Because we want the best for you!" Bulkhead protested, "And that means making sure you go to school not jail,"

"Uh oh," I heard Jack snicker, "What'd you do?"

Miko shot him a glare.

"Look Miko," Bulkhead said, "Before I became a warrior, I was a laborer. Construction. I can build stuff, I can break stuff…and that's it!"

Miko's face lit up.

"I love breaking stuff!" she chirped, pounding a fist into her palm, "I want to be just like you, Bulk!"

"Why would you want to be like me when you could be a…medic like Ratchet and Jolt?"

Ratchet didn't even turn from his screen.

"I'm detecting a fresh energon pulse…from the nation called…Greece," he announced, "And ancient city…quite historic I believe,"

"Ancient Greece, huh?" Bulkhead hummed, "Oh…field trip!"

At that moment, I heard another engine race into Base, a blue Chevy Volt.

Ben stepped out, slamming the door.

"Miko Nakadai!" he shouted, glaring at her.

"Uh oh," Miko squeaked hiding behind Bulkhead, "Amber…a little help?"

"Oh wait…what's that?" I stuttered, cupping a hand to my ear, "I think that's the phone…my parents are calling today…"

And I skipped off, out of helping distance, but still in listening distance.

"You skipped on detention again!" Ben snapped, "'Oh don't worry, Ms. Angelo, she won't run under my watch,' what was I thinking!"

He crossed his arms.

"Now I owe Sinister ten bucks!"

"Mr. Sinned?" Jack shuddered, "You made a bet with him?"

"The principal was watching," Ben replied dryly, "Miko, that stunt you pulled could cost me my job,"

"Not if she gets an A on her report," Dusk said, coming in from the main hallway, "Just got off the phone with Ms. Angelo, she says that if Miko gets the A…you'll be fine, actually…an A or a B,"

"Are you kidding me!?" Miko shouted, "I'm barely passing World History!"

"Then you better make sure you do well on that project," Dusk growled.

"C'mon, Miko," Bulkhead said, "Want to see Greece with me?"

The foreign exchange student's face lit up and she nodded, the two of them made their way out into the Groundbridge.

I turned to Ben.

"You won't really lose your job…right?" I asked.

Ben shook his head.

"No…just thought we'd add a little incentive to the project to make sure she works hard," he shrugged.

"That's evil," Jack piped up, "Good…but very evil!"

Ben gave an evil chuckle and Dusk groaned.

"What?" Ben asked.

"Your evil mad scientist laugh needs work," she sighed.

Miko POV

"Here we are!" Bulkhead announced, stopping and letting me out.

"Sw-eet!" I cheered as I hopped out and ran forwards as he transformed, "So…what are we doing in Greco-ville?"

"I'm scouting energon," he replied, "You're doing research for your history report,"

"You punked me Bulk!?" I demanded, "Not cool!"

He ignored me. Imagine that!

His scanner started beeping wildly and he hummed softly.

"Signal's strong," he finally said, "Excavation site…"

"Whoa," I breathed.

He looked at me.

"I know construction," he shrugged, looking back at the scanner, "According to my scanner…humans hit energon veins…and they don't even know it,"

He froze.

"Whoa…that's Cybertronian!" he gasped, pointing at a fresco.

"You know what that round thing is?" I asked, taking out my phone and snapping a pic, "You're smarter than you let on!"

"But even dumber than he looks," a voice snorted from behind us.

Bulkhead and I turned around as a blue mech strode up.

"Breakdown…" Bulkhead started.

"Hehehe, miss me?" the 'Con…Breakdown…snickered.

"Like rust in my undercarriage," Bulkhead snarled.

Nobody insults my guardian and gets away with it!

"You know this lunkhead?" I demanded.

"We have a history," Bulkhead growled.

"And you have a pet," Breakdown scoffed, "Does it play catch?"

He ripped a pillar out of the ground and threw it towards me.

"Catch!" he yelled.

I started to run.

Bulkhead intercepted the pillar.

"Miko! Stay down!" he shouted.

Didn't need to tell me twice!

I ducked down behind a wall right as Bulkhead got tackled by the 'Con.

I heard a bunch of crashes and then I heard Bulkhead yelp and then stone cracked.

"Oops," I heard Breakdown say as I peeked up, "Hope the pretty picture wasn't too important!"

He started to run and transformed, driving out. I ran towards my guardian.

"Told you I'm good at breaking things," Bulkhead said in an attempt of a joke.

I gave a smile as I walked up to him.

"I always have your back, Bulk," I grinned, taking out my phone, "Got us a picture of the picture,"

I showed him.

A warm smiled lit up his faceplate.

"Ratch, we need a bridge,"

Dusk POV

Ratchet opened the Groundbridge, and Bulkhead and Miko came through it.

"That, was awesome!" Miko announced.

"What was?" Jack asked.

"Bulkhead had a throw down match with a 'Con, and we found this round ball thing on a stone wall and then Bulkhead broke but its fine because I took a picture, but the 'Con fled before Bulkhead could finish him off," Miko said in one breath.

"Well I already have a million questions," I said cocking an eyebrow.

"Ratch, Jolt, check this out. Miko show him the picture," Bulkhead said

Sure enough Miko flipped her cell phone out and showed the picture.

"Looks like an Energon Harvester," Jolt said.

" Optimus! we have found something," Ratchet called to Dad.

ANOTHER ONE!?

"Geeze!" Amber said softly, "How many of those things did you guys make?! There was one in Egypt,"

"Which Optimus scrapped," Ben added.

I shuddered convulsively.

I did not like remembering that day. It was a very bad experience for me (shattered wing, dying, that kind of stuff).

"It is indeed an Energon Harvester," Dad said as he took a look at the picture, "A powerful tool created by the ancients to remove raw energon from any source,"

"Greek gods knew Autobots?" Raf asked.

"No. The ancients often used the art of a given era to conceal messages. This fresco was likely a sigh post indicating a Harvesters location hidden somewhere on this planet,"

"Uh, Optimus?" Jack started," "If the Harvester removes energon from anything and you all have energon pumping inside you…"

"In Decepticon hands the Harvester would be a devastating weapon," Dad finished.

"See! You were a genius to total that painting!" Miko said.

"Miko's not wrong, how can the 'Cons find the Harvester without the fresco?" Arcee added.

"With high speed internet?" Raf said, "If you do an image search for Greek god and golden orb this pops up, it's in a museum,"

He then showed an image of a Greek statue holding a rather large golden orb.

"That the real deal?" Arcee asked Dad.

"Contact Agent Fowler," Dad then said.

Ratchet then attempted to contact Agent Fowler. An image of Fowler then popped up on the screen

"You've reached Special Agent William Fowler; I'm currently on an intensive training retreat and unavailable until Tuesday," came the Agent's voice.

A voice mail, great.

"I hate talking to machines," Ratchet growled.

"Oh the irony," Amber snickered.

"Now what?" I asked.

"Without Agent Fowler's direct aid, we will have to confiscate the Harvester on our own," Dad said.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, confiscate? As in steal museum property?" Jack asked shocked.

"That sounds…illegal," Raf said.

"I do not wish to break Human law, but once the Decepticons learn of the Harvester's location, they will not hesitate to obtain it by any means necessary," Dad told us, "We must act covertly,"

"Uh, okay, no offence Optimus, but covertly and giant robots don't really go together, museums are public, and they have guards, and security cameras!" Jack said.

"No problem! We're small enough to sneak in and we're not a government secret!" Miko said flexing about.

"What energy drink did you give her," I hissed to Amber.

Amber gave a slight grin.

"Miko, I'm not sure that's wise…" Bulkhead said.

"But it may be our best option Bulkhead. The longer we debate, the more time we give the Decepticons," Dad said.

"So what's the plan?" I asked.

"We'll Groundbridge just outside the museum, and then we will be on our guard for any Decepticons that may infiltrate the museum," Dad explained.

"Then we Groundbridge inside the museum and grab the Harvester," Jack said.

Jack POV

The Groundbridge came on and Optimus, Arcee, Bumblebee and Bulkhead all transformed and went straight through the Groundbridge. Now we have to play the waiting game.

I heard Dusk come in on a scissor lift.

"Ready to go?" she asked.

Miko, Raf, and I all jumped into the scissor lift with her.

"Jack do you wanna handle the controls?" she asked.

"Sure," I replied.

"Dusk, Jack, Miko, Rafael, I will have a clear view of you," came Optimus' voice over the comm link, "Once you secure the Harvester I will contact Ratchet and Jolt to Bridge you back to base,"

On cue Ratchet opened the Groundbridge and we were ready and waiting.

"Now since you will bypass all points on normal entry you will not need to worry about setting off the alarm, but take care to avoid any security guards," Jolt explained.

"Be careful," Ben said.

"I will be," Dusk answered.

Then we drove through the Groundbridge. Sure enough, we were inside the museum.

I scanned the room for the Harvester. There was a t-rex skeleton (isn't there always?) An Easter Island head…Dusk grinned.

"Dumdum, you give me gumgum?" she whispered.

Miko snickered.

And right in the center…The Greek statue holding the Harvester.

"Opa," Miko whispered.

"What? Never mind," I said.

Optimus then flashed his headlights at us giving us the clear, I nodded in response.

With our target in view, I got the scissor lift to go up towards the security camera. Then Miko got out her cell phone, looked through the camera to get an accurate angle, took a picture and then placed her phone over the camera.

With that done we made our way to the statue, the three of us kids were struggling to get the thing down as Dusk kept watch.

I heard something to my right. I looked and noticed a missile was coming our way!

Optimus quickly transformed and caught it. But it was forcing him backwards towards the museum, he stopped it but without cracking the window first.

Dusk, Miko and Raf looked to see what had happened. Optimus turned to us, and then looked forward again. Then this 'Con had this rod of electricity with a prod on the end, and rammed it into Optimus' neck, he stumbled forwards before hitting the floor.

A sharp prick stabbed into my neck as I watched.

"DAD!" Dusk shrieked.

Dusk POV

I could only watch on in horror as Knockout jumped on Dad's back and repeated the process.

My spark throbbed painfully as Dad took yet another hit and I gave a soft whimper of pain as it reflected in my bond. Jack gripped the railing to keep from falling to the ground. Don't know why…maybe the height's finally gotten to him?

"Its 'Cons," Raf said grimly.

"They've got Optimus," Jack added.

"Where are the others?" I growled, slightly annoyed.

"They might be dealing with other 'Cons; the way we can help is to get this Harvester down," Jack said.

"You're right I was being selfish, step aside I'll get the thing down," I said stepping in front of Jack.

Just then the alarm went off as the Knockout was thrown into the museum.

I then placed my arm under the Harvester and heaved the thing off the hand and into the lift. I then grabbed Raf off the hand.

"Let's roll," I simply said.

Jack shook his head and then lowered the lift.

"Why didn't you do that in the first place?" he asked.

"Because I was keeping watch," I answered.

"Come on time to make our exit guys," Miko announced.

She then hopped out of the lift and ran ahead. I jumped out too; Jack and Raf drove on ahead.

"Everyone's still functioning, good," I thought, as I looked onto the battle outside.

I made my way back to the others. I came across the scissor lift, with no Jack, no Raf and no Harvester!

"What happened?" I said slightly anxious.

"Soundwave came in and grabbed the Harvester," Jack said, sounding frustrated as he walked up to me, Raf in tow.

"Aw frag!" I snarled slamming my fist into a wall, the wall cracked all the way to ceiling.

"Dusk," Jack said softly, putting a calming hand on my shoulder.

Once again, that easy calm washed over me…just like it did when I first met him.

"Where's Miko?" I finally asked.

"Security guard got her," Raf said.

"Well we can't go in and get her…we'd all be in the scrap; at least she's out of harm's way. Now let's get out of here," I grumbled as I went through the garage style door.

We then ran to the front of the museum.

"What we're just gonna leave Miko?" Jack said.

"We'll get Agent Fowler to take care of it. I feel bad for leaving her too, Jack but it'll be fine in the end trust me," I told him.

We then came round the front and we came in sight and saw all the 'Bots except for Arcee.

"'Cons have the Harvester!" Jack informed them.

"And security has Miko!" Raf added.

"What? I'm going in after her," Bulkhead growled, about to charge in there but was stopped by Dad.

"Bulkhead. Miko may be detained, but she is safe from harm," Dad told him, "Ratchet, Jolt, re-open the arrival co-ordinates,"

Jack and I both got in Papá's cab as Raf got into 'Bee's, we drove towards the now opened Groundbridge and Arcee had met up with us.

Miko POV

This. Stinks.

Worse than detention.

"Look, kid," the guard sighed, "If this is some sort of prank…you need to know that the authorities are on their way. It'd go a whole lot easier for you if you just told me what happened to the sphere,"

You wouldn't believe me if I told you Copper.

Alrighty, Miko, let's show off those acting classes…

"I was researching my history report. I just lost track of time!" I explained, "And got locked in here after closing!"

"So what's your history report about?" the guard asked, "I'd love to know,"

Scrap.

Dusk POV

We got back to base and no time was wasted as Dad had assigned Arcee and 'Bee to scout out and find any signs of activity from Screamer and the Harvester.

Dad set up his own co-ordinates as he too was about to join the others in the search.

"Bulkhead. It is best that you remain here," Dad told him.

"So I can break Miko out of the museum?" Bulkhead asked hopefully.

"So you can help Ratchet and Jolt. You may be Miko's guardian, but she requires human assistance. Agent Fowler remains her best option," Dad told him before he himself transformed and exited through the Groundbridge.

Bulkhead's mouth dropped.

Raf, it seems, had tried to contact Fowler again as we heard the same answer message again.

"Still no answer," Raf informed Bulkhead.

"Fowler's lounging around some poolside cabana!" Bulkhead growled then threw his fist down on one of Ratchet's tools.

"BULKHEAD! I NEEDED THAT!" Ratchet yelled.

"We can free Miko, if we just return the Harvester to the museum," Bulkhead said.

"So the Decepticons can steal it all over again?" Jolt pointed out.

You could tell the wheels in Bulk's head were working overtime as he was constantly blinking.

"I'm so dumb!" he then groaned pressing his servos over his helm in frustration.

"So how are we going to help Miko?" Jack asked.

"By returning this replica to the museum," Ratchet explained holding up a half made Harvester look alike, "The construction of which would be going a lot faster if Bulkhead hadn't just mangled my frame welder!"

"We're already trespassers and thieves; why not add forgery to the list," Jack sighed.

"Agh, I wish I had never took Miko to the…the painting of the Harvester is not the only thing we found at the ruins," Bulkhead said, the lights flicking on.

"I'm sorry?" Jolt asked, confused.

"Starscream's not dumb, no matter what kind of tool his has, he's going to take the easy route," Bulkhead explained.

"So he'll go to the energon that has already been dug up," I added.

"Exactly. Ratchet Groundbridge me there. I'll get that Harvester back," Bulkhead said confidently.

"We should contact Optimus first," Jolt advised.

"What, and let Starscream drain the energon dry? There's no time Jolt, we have to act now," Bulkhead retaliated.

"Fine," Jolt sighed before activating the Groundbridge.

Bulkhead ran through it at high speed.

"I will contact Optimus anyway. Bulkhead may require back up," Ratchet said before contacting him through a personal comm. link.

"Send me," I said.

"No," Jolt growled, "Optimus would have my spark if I let you near a thing like that, Dusk. Not after what happened the last time,"

I growled back, crossing my arms, wings flaring in anger.

"You're starting to look like a feathery puffball again," Amber pointed out.

I glared at her and fold my wings firmly against my back.

Bulkhead POV

I got there as soon as Starscream started harvesting. I started forwards as quietly as I could…

And I stepped on a broken piece of pottery.

"Oh scrap," I grumbled as Breakdown and Knockout turned to face me.

"Back for seconds?" Breakdown chuckled as he and Knockout started charging at me.

I watched as they split off, Knockout's energon prod sparking threateningly as he twirled it around like Dusk did with her Prime's staff.

Breakdown charged, hammer raised…and I dropped to the ground as the two collided. Knockout receiving Breakdown's hammer and falling flat.

I snatched Knockout's prod from the crimson mech and jabbed Breakdown with it.

He dropped like a b=pile of bricks.

I chuckled to myself.

Too easy.

I heard the Harvester start up again and something rammed into me. I grunted and staggered forwards as Starscream used the Harvester on me. My processor clouded, oh Primus…this was very bad…I can't think…so tired

I fell to the ground.

"You're a big one," Screamer hummed, "This could take a while,"

I staggered upright and lurched forwards.

You aren't taking me that easy you stiletto-heeled creep.

"W-wait!" Starscream yelped as I reached the Harvester, "What are you doing!?"

"What I do b-best," I growled grabbing the Harvester, "Breaking things!"

I reared back my fist and snapped forwards, ramming into Screamer's faceplate. I took the Harvester from his slack grip and threw it as hard as I could into the sky.

It blew up rather spectacularly. Miko would be proud…

And I fell backwards.

I could barely hear the 'Cons in front of me. Something about 'glutton' and 'punishment'. I also heard a Bridge start up, engines rev, and blasters fire.

I saw Optimus, Arcee and 'Bee standing over me.

"Hey…" I said weakly before conking out.

Miko POV

"…And of course there's the whole principle of Deus ex Machina," I concluded, "Uh the god from the machine?"

The guard looked sleepy…just a few more minutes…then I'd bolt…

"It's that part in Greek story telling where some character shows up out of the blue to make everything alright?" I asked.

"That so, young lady?" the guard asked.

Dang, so close to getting him to sleep.

"Well, I'm sure the police will want to hear all about your history report," he finished smugly.

I bowed my head right as a loud, insistent knocking pounded on the door.

My heart leaped as Agent Fowler walked in and showed his badge.

"Special Agent William Fowler," Fowler introduced himself, "The stolen property has been located and restored to museum premises,"

The guard looked at the screen…

Sure enough, the sphere was there!

Fowler walked up to me and gently grabbed my arm.

"The girl comes with me," he said, pulling out… "You dropped your cell phone,"

I nearly squealed in happiness as I took it from him.

"Found it on the floor…right next to your history report," he finished as we walked through the door and out into the sunlight.

I took a look at our…no my transportation!

I gave a gasp as Bulkhead pulled up and I looked up at Fowler.

"Off you go," he said.

I ran into the passenger's side seat and jumped into my normal position.

"Great timing, Bulk!" I chirped, "I was running out of history factoids…stuff I didn't even know I knew!"

"Looks like you're smarter than you let on," he chuckled as he buckled me in.

"Under pressure," I snorted.

"Me too," he agreed.

Huh?

"Later," he said, noticing my expression.

Oh well. Hmmm…maybe I can tease him a bit…

"Can't wait to work on my history report!" I chuckled as we started off, "I'm going to write all about how the Autobots interacted with ancient civilizations!"

"Uh…I'm not so sure that'll get you into college," he admitted.

I laughed.

"Aw, don't worry, Bulk…I got it all planned out," I grinned.

A few weeks later…

Dusk POV

"Hey guys! Check it out!" Miko shouted as she got out of Bulkhead's alt, "An A on my report!"

"Nice job Miko," I congratulated.

"And that means Mr. Castora gets to keep his job!" she added.

Ben started laughing and Miko stared at him, confused.

"What?" she asked.

"Miko…" Ben gasped, "Angelo wasn't going to fire me if you didn't get an A or B on that report…she just wanted a little incentive to get you to do better because she knows I'm one of your favorite teachers!"

Miko stood stock still, trying to compute what the frag was going on…

"Oh. My. YOU CHEATER!" she finally screeched, "BEN! YOU BETTER RUN BECAUSE WHEN I GET MY HANDS ON YOU!"

She chucked a rock at him. Ben dodged and started running, laughing maniacally the whole way down the hall as Miko chased him.

I sighed and shook my head.

"I have one insane family," I grumbled.

A/N Ben, you are so cruel. *sigh* Anyway, next is Speed Metal, and I don't think that'll take me too long to type up...seeing as I'll probably steal most of it from my other fic but add little quirks to it that are called OCs. So for those of you that have been reading my Pacific Rim piece, I am heading back there now and will stay there for a bit. So no worries! :)
