"Whoa, this house is so much better than the last one," Kira said as the family entered their fourth home. "Look! It has a huge backyard; I can get a basketball hoop."
"And I would have so much room to lay out and work on my tan!" Leah grinned.
"You guys, you haven't even seen the house," Sam said, rolling her eyes. "You can't just go off of the backyard."
"We've never had a yard before," Leah pointed out.
"Well according to the layout of this house I found online, it has four bedrooms, three bathrooms and huge living area that would be perfect for us to spend time watching T.V., playing board games, talking…whatever sounds good," Freddie said.
"Can we go upstairs and look at the bedrooms?" Kira asked. "I want to see what my options are."
"Sure, but don't get too attached to anything," Sam said. "We're not necessarily buying this place."
"I've got to say, this place does look better than the other houses we've seen," Freddie said, inspecting the large fireplace that stood next to several glass windows. "And it's pretty affordable."
"The kitchen's kind of small," Sam shrugged.
"Well we could always expand it," Freddie said. "Since this place is well beneath our budget."
"I thought we weren't deciding on anything final until after the case was finished," Sam frowned.
"I know," Freddie nodded. "But still, I think we should keep our eye on this place."
"Maybe," Sam agreed. "It just feels weird to have all this space."
"How long did you guys live in that apartment again?" Freddie asked.
"We moved in when the girls had just turned two," Sam told him. "I started saving for it when I found out I was pregnant. I knew we couldn't keep living in our old studio apartment."
"You're really gonna miss that place, aren't you?" Freddie said, putting an arm around her.
"Yeah," Sam sighed. "That's where the twins grew up. But there's no way five people can fit in it. I just hope whoever moves in after us treats it well."
"Mom, Freddie, we have to get this house!" Leah grinned as her and Kira ran downstairs. "All the closets are huge!"
"And we could make the attic into a game room or something; it's so cool up there!" Kira added.
"We still have a lot of places to look at," Freddie said.
"Yeah, we might find some place you guys like better," Sam said.
"Are we going to anymore houses today?" Leah asked.
"Nope, this is the last stop," Freddie said. "So go look around some more before we head back into the city."
"I don't think there actually is a better house than this," Sam said once the twins had run off to explore the backyard.
"You really like it?" Freddie asked. "We haven't even been upstairs yet."
"It just seems homey," Sam shrugged. "Once the kitchen situation gets fixed, of course."
"You've had a problem with every kitchen we've seen today," Freddie chuckled, amused.
"It's the most important room in the house," Sam smiled. "It has to be perfect."
"Right," Freddie nodded. "You need to perfect spot to store all your bacon, I should've known."
…..
A couple weeks later, Sam was laying on her and Freddie's bed, still in her pajamas, enjoying her Sunday morning. She was flipping through a magazine, wondering how long she could get away with staying there.
Suddenly, her phone rang and Sam picked it up to see Carly's name flashing across the screen.
"Hey Carls," Sam said, answering.
"Hi," Carly said brightly on the other line. "How are you?"
"My back hurts, my feet hurt, and I have to pee ten times a day," Sam smirked. "But other than that I'm doing good."
"Sorry," Carly said.
"Eh, it's not that bad," Sam told her. "What about you? How's Seattle?"
"Rainy," Carly sighed. "I was out getting breakfast with Spencer this morning and we got caught in a storm. But we ran into the nearest store, which happened to be a baby boutique! I got Baby Boy Benson so many cute things!"
"Aw, thanks," Sam laughed.
"I have a ton of other stuff here for him too," Carly continued. "Which is why I was thinking of maybe flying over to you guys in two weeks from tomorrow."
Sam frowned. Two weeks from tomorrow was the second court date. "Um…actually, Carly, my boss has already told me that for the next few weeks I'm pretty much going to be working around the clock to catch up on all the paperwork at the precinct," Sam said slowly. "And I know Freddie has some big presentation that week too. We-We really wouldn't be able to see you too much."
"Oh," Carly said.
"What about the next week?" Sam asked quickly. "The girls are off from school and me and Freddie will both be free too."
"Yeah, that works!" Carly said. "I'll book my flight."
"Cool," Sam grinned. "Maybe we can take you to see the house we found."
"You bought a house already?"
"No, not exactly," Sam replied. "We all really like it though. And it's pretty cheap. We're just gonna look around some more, but I don't think we'll find anything even close to it. This place is amazing, Carly. It has a pool, a Jacuzzi tub in the master bedroom and the room we would use for the nursery is so cute! Plus there's a wing place five minutes away, do you know how convenient that will be?"
"Yes, because any house you live in must have chicken within a five-mile radius," Carly laughed.
"Exactly," Sam agreed. "So since you're not pregnant and bloated, what are you gonna do tonight?"
"Actually," Carly said slowly. "I have a date."
"Oh, spill," Sam said.
"I've met him a few times at work, he's one of the marketing people at the company," Carly explained. "But I'm not gonna get my hopes up."
"Why not?" Sam asked. "You're Carly Shay! You practically have your whole life with a guy planned out before the first date."
"That was a long time ago," Carly chuckled. "The way my dating history has been, I'm lucky if I get to a third date with a guy. Trust me, at my rate, I'll be living alone for the rest of my life."
"You'll find someone," Sam assured her.
"Thanks," Carly sighed. "But I guess I should go now, I have to send in a few things to work before my date."
"Alright," Sam nodded. "Good luck tonight."
She hung up the phone just as Freddie walked into the bedroom.
"Morning," he said, giving her a long kiss. "I made pancakes and bacon for everyone."
"Man, you really know how to do this husband thing," Sam said. "Oh, by the way, Carly's coming to New York in three weeks. She wanted to come during the court date, but I told her we were both busy. So if she asks, you have a presentation."
"Are you ever going to tell Carly about this?" Freddie asked.
Sam shook her head. "She doesn't need to be involved."
"Okay," Freddie nodded. He looked down at the magazine in her lap. "Why are you reading my Men's Health magazine?"
"Hot guys," Sam smirked.
"Thanks," Freddie said, rolling his eyes.
"Hey, they have nothing on you," Sam told him, craning her neck to give him another kiss. "The twins up yet?"
"Nah, they're both still asleep."
"Hmmm," Sam said slowly. "Then go lock the door."
"Why?" Freddie asked, confused.
"Because we're about to make this Sunday morning even better," Sam grinned.
"How are we-oh!" Freddie said, finally catching on. "But what about your pancakes and bacon? They'll be cold by the time we're done."
"That's what a microwave is for," Sam said, lacing her arms around his neck as she pulled him onto the bed with her.
…
"So how is it?" Kira asked as Freddie read over her history report a few nights later.
"It's good," Freddie said. "Though I do think it would be better if you threw in a few pictures. After dinner why don't I help you find some images of Abraham Lincoln online to add to this?"
"Okay," Kira agreed. She looked over at her mom, who was stirring a pot at the stove. "Mom? What's for dinner?"
"Spaghetti," Sam answered. "And it's almost done. Go get Leah."
"Smells good, baby," Freddie said, getting up from the kitchen table as Kira ran off to get her sister.
"Thanks," Sam said as she licked a bit of sauce from the wooden spoon she was stirring with. "And you're not just saying Kira's report is good, right? She needs an A on this to bring her average up to a B."
"It's very nicely written and it has all the facts right," Freddie told her. "A lot better than her first draft where she said that Abraham Lincoln died at an arcade."
"Okay," Sam nodded. "Well hopefully she'll do well then so that-" suddenly she stopped talking and put her hands on the bump of her abdomen.
"What's wrong?" Freddie asked at once. "Are you okay? Is something wrong with the baby? Do you need me to call-"
"No," Sam said, a smile creeping onto her face. "No, nothing's wrong. Freddie, feel! The baby's kicking! He's really kicking!"
"Oh my God!" Freddie said, placing his hands on her stomach, feeling a gentle kick. "He's kicking!"
"That's what I just told you, nub!" Sam laughed.
"What's going on?" Leah asked as her and Kira returned to the kitchen.
"Quick, come here, feel your brother kick," Sam told them.
The twins both ran over to their mother and put their hands next to Freddie's.
"Whoa!" Kira gasped. "I felt him!"
"Me too!" Leah grinned.
"Was that the first time he's done that?" Freddie asked.
"Yeah," Sam nodded.
"He stopped," Kira frowned. "I don't feel him anymore."
"He tired himself out," Sam said. "He'll start up again soon. Once you two started kicking, you hardly went an hour without doing it."
"Just think," Freddie said. "In four-and-a-half months we'll be able to see him doing that."
"I can't wait," Sam smiled.
