"You lost quite a bit of blood," a nurse told Sam as she sat in the uncomfortable hospital bed, fussing with the bandages on her arm. "You'll need to stay here a few nights. You have a nasty concussion as well."
"What about my baby?" Sam asked, still feeling dizzy.
She had arrived at the hospital almost an hour ago, and though she had been doing nothing but ask, no one would give her any news on how her son was. She had only seen him for a few short moments before the paramedics arrived and whisked her off.
Freddie hadn't even been allowed in to see her yet.
"Your son is with your husband right now, he's getting checked out," the nurse told her kindly.
Sam felt her stomach dropped as she realized just how much trauma her son had been through before she had delivered him. She thought back to a case her and Caleb had worked years ago, where they had found a pregnant woman beaten in an alley, about to deliver. They had managed to get the woman to the hospital before the child had been born, but Sam and Caleb later found out that the baby was born with sever brain injuries from the beating.
"How is he?" Sam whispered, not knowing whether she could handle the answer right now.
"I don't know, dear, they haven't told me anything," the nurse said gently, giving her a sympathetic smile. "I was told to focus on making sure you're okay."
"I'm fine," Sam said firmly, though the pain in her head and arm begged to disagree. "I just want to see my son."
"I'll go talk to the doctors," the nurse told her. "Maybe…maybe they can let you see him and your husband now."
"Thank you," Sam sighed, leaning back against her pillows. She stared up at the ceiling, trying to wrap her head around what had happened.
Marshall was dead. He was finally gone for good.
But until she knew the fate of her son, she couldn't allow herself to celebrate.
Suddenly, the door to her room open and Freddie rushed in.
"Sam!" he gasped, running to her bedside. "I-I've been trying to see you since they brought you in here! But they kept telling me I couldn't see you until after the doctors and nurses finished with you and made sure you were stable."
"Freddie, how is he?" Sam asked at once. "Is-Is he okay?"
Freddie took her hand and squeezed it, giving her a small smile. "Yeah," he nodded. "He's okay. Perfect, actually."
"He doesn't have any problems?" Sam asked, hardly daring to believe this shred of good news.
"None," Freddie confirmed. "They said it's a miracle he doesn't have any brain injuries."
"Then why can't I see him?" Sam demanded. "I've been asking since I got here, but-"
She was cut off as another nurse entered the room, though this one was wheeling a small, plastic crib with her.
"Here he is, Mrs. Benson," the nurse beamed as she wheeled the crib over to Sam's bedside. "Your healthy baby boy."
"Oh my God," Sam said softly, looking down at her son, who was happily staring back up at her.
The nurse gently lifted the infant up and placed him tenderly in Sam's arms.
"I'm finally holding him," Sam whispered, feeling her eyes welling. She craned her neck and placed a soft kiss on her son's forehead.
"Hey there," she smiled. "I'm your mommy, and I love you so, so much."
"He has your eyes," Freddie told her, sitting down next to her on the bed and wrapping an arm around his wife and son.
"He has your nose," Sam chuckled as she watched the infant grasp her finger. She looked up at Freddie. "I was so scared, baby…I-I thought he wasn't going to make it. And then I was scared he had somehow gotten hurt, and-and-"
"He's with us now, and that's where he's going to say," Freddie said, stroking his son's head as he kissed Sam's temple.
There was a knock at the door and a second later Caleb poked his head in.
"Hey," he said. "Just wanted to check on you all. How is the little guy?"
"He's going to be fine," Sam replied. "Caleb…thank you. For-For everything."
"I'm just glad I got to make use out of that six-hour course they made me take on delivering a baby like that," Caleb smirked.
"You saved the day," Freddie told him earnestly. "Without you…Sam and our son probably wouldn't be..."
"Hey, don't mention it," Caleb said, patting Freddie's back. He walked over to Sam's bedside and looked down at the infant.
"Wow…he's so tiny."
"Five pounds, one ounce," Freddie nodded.
"Yeah, but he's a fighter," Sam said, kissing her newborn again.
….
"I want to see him!" Kira said as her and Leah burst into their mother's hospital room the next afternoon with Freddie and Carly at their heels.
"Shh, he's sleeping," Sam smiled as the twins gathered around her and the slumbering infant.
"Whoa, he's so cute!" Leah whispered.
"He's precious," Carly cooed.
"Can we hold him?" Kira asked.
"Yeah, go sit down in that chair," Freddie nodded, taking the infant from Sam's arms.
Kira ran over and sat down and Freddie gently lowered the baby into her arms.
"Careful with his head," Sam told her.
"What's his name?" Kira whispered, not taking her eyes off her brother.
"His name is Kyle Caleb Benson," Freddie said.
"Hi, Kyle," Leah said, looking over her twin's shoulder. "We're your sisters."
"How are you?" Carly asked softy, sitting down at the corner of Sam's bed.
Sam smirked. "Not that shabby. The girls weren't too bad, were they?"
"Nah, they were a lot of fun," Carly said. She glanced down at Sam's bandaged arm. "So, um, I guess you were right to want the twins out of New York…"
"Yeah," Sam said quietyly. "So, um…about what happened-"
"Hey," Carly said, cutting her off. "You don't have explain right now. Enjoy the girls and Kyle right now."
Sam nodded. "Thanks Carls."
…
Sam and Kyle were able to leave the hospital a week later. While they were in the hospital, Freddie and the girls managed to pack up the entire apartment and move all their belongings into their new home. And though there were now unpacked boxes all around their new living room, the family felt at home the second they stepped foot into their home.
The day after Sam and Kyle left the hospital, the Benson family took a trip to the same courthouse where Sam had spent far too many hours over the past six months. This time, though, she wasn't feeling nervous and scared.
She was excited.
"Okay, I just you to sign right here, Mrs. Benson," a kind official said as Sam scribbled her name on one of the many documents in front of her. "And initial here…"
"How much longer should this take?" Sam asked as she shifted Kyle in her arms. "He's getting antsy here."
"Just need a few more signatures," the official replied. "Okay, Mr. Benson? If you will just sign these three forms here."
"Got it," Freddie said, picking up his pen.
"Great, now Kira? Leah? I'll need you to sign right at the bottom of these two pages…"
The twins nodded and signed their names as they were told.
"Well then," the official smiled. "That's it. Mr. Benson, you have officially adopted Kira and Leah Puckett. They are considered to be your children in the eyes of the court."
Freddie beamed as the twins hugged him tightly. As Sam watched the sight, she could practically feel the pure joy radiating off of them.
"Well, there it is," Freddie said as the girls pulled away. "It's official."
"Congratulations," Sam grinned. "You've become a dad to three kids in less than two weeks. Pretty impressive."
"Can we go eat now?" Kira asked. "We've been here forever!"
"Yeah, I'm starving," Leah nodded.
"I'm down for food," Sam agreed. "Let's go get sandwiches down the street."
"Wait…hold on," Freddie said, pulling out his phone and taking a quick snapshot.
"What are you doing?" Sam asked.
"This is going to be our first meal as an official family," Freddie smiled. "I have to document it!"
"Well you can wait until we actually get our meals to start being all annoying with your pictures," Sam said, rolling her eyes. "If I don't get something to eat soon, I'm gonna start getting crabby. And considering I only got three hours of sleep last night…"
"Okay, okay," Freddie chuckled, taking Kyle from her. "Let's go get you some food."
"Smart man," Sam smirked, standing on her toes to kiss him. "Love you, baby."
"Love you too," Freddie smiled.
"If you guys are trying to make us lose our appetite, it's working," Kira cringed.
"Seriously, I'm all for romance, but there is a baby in the room!" Leah nodded.
"Alright, move out!" Sam said as she pulled away from Freddie.
And with that, the Benson family headed out, ready to start their lives together at last.
…
AN-So that was the last official chapter of this story. However I have a short epilogue that I will be uploading tomorrow!
